Realization process of microalgal biorefinery: The optional approach toward carbon net-zero emission

Increasing carbon dioxide (CO2) emission has already become a dire threat to the human race and Earth's ecology. Microalgae are recommended to be engineered as CO2 fixers in biorefinery, which play crucial roles in responding climate change and accelerating the transition to a sustainable future. This review sorted through each segment of microalgal biorefinery to explore the potential for its practical implementation and commercialization, offering valuable insights into research trends and identifies challenges that needed to be addressed in the development process. Firstly, the known mechanisms of microalgal photosynthetic CO2 fixation and the approaches for strain improvement were summarized. The significance of process regulation for strengthening fixation efficiency and augmenting competitiveness was emphasized, with a specific focus on CO2 and light optimization strategies. Thereafter, the massive potential of microalgal refineries for various bioresource production was discussed in detail, and the integration with contaminant reclamation was mentioned for economic and ecological benefits. Subsequently, economic and environmental impacts of microalgal biorefinery were evaluated via life cycle assessment (LCA) and techno-economic analysis (TEA) to lit up commercial feasibility. Finally, the current obstacles and future perspectives were discussed objectively to offer an impartial reference for future researchers and investors.

Unlocking the potential of microalgae bio-factories for carbon dioxide mitigation: A comprehensive exploration of recent advances, key challenges, and energy-economic insights

Microalgae are promising alternatives to mitigate atmospheric CO₂ owing to their fast growth rates, resilience in the face of adversity and ability to produce a wide range of products, including food, feed supplements, chemicals, and biofuels. However, to fully harness the potential of microalgae-based carbon capture technology, further advancements are required to overcome the associated challenges and limitations, particularly with regards to enhancing CO₂ solubility in the culture medium. This review provides an in-depth analysis of the biological carbon concentrating mechanism and highlights the current approaches, including species selection, optimization of hydrodynamics, and abiotic components, aimed at improving the efficacy of CO₂ solubility and biofixation. Moreover, cutting-edge strategies such as gene mutation, bubble dynamics and nanotechnology are systematically outlined to elevate the CO₂ biofixation capacity of microalgal cells. The review also evaluates the energy and economic feasibility of using microalgae for CO₂ bio-mitigation, including challenges and prospects for future development.

Enhanced astaxanthin production of Haematococcus pluvialis strains induced salt and high light resistance with gamma irradiation

This study was conducted to increase the productivity of biomass that contains high astaxanthin content by developing a mutant Haematococcus pluvialis strain with strong environmental tolerance. H. pluvialis has a low cell-growth rate and is vulnerable to stressors such as salinity or light intensity, which may hinder large-scale commercial cultivation. A mutant M5 strain selected through 5000-Gy gamma irradiation showed improved biomass and astaxanthin production under high-salinity and high-light intensity conditions. With enhanced SOD activity and overexpressed astaxanthin biosynthesis genes (lyc, crtR-b, bkt2), M5 demonstrated an increase in biomass and astaxanthin productivity by 86.70 % and 66.15 %, respectively compared to those of untreated cells. Also, the omega-3 content of M5 increased by 149.44 % under 40 mM CaCl₂ compared to the untreated cells. Finally, even when subjected to high-intensity light irradiation for the whole life cycle, the biomass and astaxanthin concentration increased by 84.99 % and 241 %, respectively, compared to the wild-type cells.

Using carbon dioxide-added microalgal-bacterial granular sludge for carbon-neutral municipal wastewater treatment under outdoor conditions: Performance, granule characteristics and environmental sustainability

Microalgal-bacterial granular sludge (MBGS) process has a gorgeous prospect for municipal wastewater treatment, but the research on the treatment of complex organic wastewater by MBGS process with CO₂ addition under outdoor conditions is not enough. Therefore, this paper evaluated the feasibility of CO₂-added MBGS process for complex organic wastewater disposal under natural day-night cycles. The results showed that the addition of CO₂ overall improved the removal efficiency of pollutants. Typically, the removal efficiency of total phosphorus increased averagely from 88.5 % to 95.0 % in 12-h day cycle and from 26.2 % to 45.3 % in 12-h night cycle. The addition of CO₂ increased the size of MBGS from 1.0 mm to 16.5 mm within 30 days due to extracellular polymeric substances secretion and the dominant filamentous microalgae on granules. The decrease of catalase activity and malondialdehyde content indicated that CO₂ reduced oxidative damage and maintained the normal growth of MBGS. Further estimates of the collected gas showed that CO₂-added MBGS process could reduce global CO₂ emissions by one hundred million tons per year. This study is expected to contribute to the goal of carbon neutrality in the area of wastewater treatment by MBGS process.

Arthrospira platensis as a Feasible Feedstock for Bioethanol Production

In recent decades and to deal with the scarcity of fossil fuels, many studies have been developed in order to set up a sustainable biofuel production sector. This new sector must be efficient (high productivity), economically profitable (low production costs and therefore acceptable fuel prices), and ethical (low carbon balance, no competition with food resources). The production of bioethanol is based on the fermentation of reserve sugars, accumulated in the form of starch in microalgae and glycogen in cyanobacteria. The advantage of this bioenergy production route lies in the fact that the post-crop fermentation process is at the industrial stage since it has already been tested for many years for the production of bioethanol from agricultural resources. One of the most cultivated cyanobacteria is Arthrospira (“Spirulina”) and its production is also already at industrial scale. Depending on the cultivation conditions, this cyanobacteria is able to accumulate up to 65% DW (dry weight) of glycogen, making it a feasible feedstock for bioethanol production. The aim of this review is to provide a clear overview of these operating conditions for glycogen accumulation.

Phycoremediation of phenol-polluted petro-industrial effluents and its techno-economic values as a win-win process for a green environment, sustainable energy and bioproducts

The discharge of the toxic phenol-polluted petro-industrial effluents (PPPIE) has severe environmental negative impacts, thus it is mandatory to be treated before its discharge. The objective of this review was to discuss the sustainable application of microalgae in phenols degradation, with a special emphasis on the enzymes involved in this bioprocess and the factors affecting the success of PPPIE phycoremediation. Moreover, it confers the microalgae bioenergetic strategies to degrade different forms of phenols in PPPIE. It also points out the advantages of the latest application of bacteria, fungi and microalgae as microbial consortia in phenols biodegradation. Briefly, phycoremediation of PPPIE consumes carbon dioxide emitted from petro-industries for; valorization of the polluted water to be reused and production of algal biomass which can act as a source of energy for such integrated bioprocess. Besides, the harvested algal biomass can feasibly produce; third-generation biofuels, biorefineries, bioplastics, fish and animal feed, food supplements, natural dyes, antioxidants and many other valuable products. Consequently, this review precisely confirms that the phycoremediation of PPPIE is a win-win process for a green environment and a sustainable future. Thus, to achieve the three pillars of sustainability; social, environmental and economic; it is recommendable to integrate PPPIE treatment with algal cultivation. This integrated process would overcome the problem of greenhouse gas emissions, global warming and climate change, solve the problem of water-scarce, and protect the environment from the harmful negative impacts of PPPIE.
