CO2 conversion using catalyst-free and catalyst-assisted plasma-processes: Recent progress and understanding

Effect of Gas Composition on Temperature and CO2 Conversion in a Gliding Arc Plasmatron reactor: Insights for Post-Plasma Catalysis from Experiments and Computation

Plasma-based CO2 conversion has attracted increasing interest. However, to understand the impact of plasma operation on post-plasma processes, we studied the effect of adding N2, N2/CH4 and N2/CH4/H2O to a CO2 gliding arc plasmatron (GAP) to obtain valuable insights into their impact on exhaust stream composition and temperature, which will serve as feed gas and heat for post-plasma catalysis (PPC). Adding N2 improves the CO2 conversion from 4 % to 13 %, and CH4 addition further promotes it to 44 %, and even to 61 % at lower gas flow rate (6 L/min), allowing a higher yield of CO and hydrogen for PPC. The addition of H2O, however, reduces the CO2 conversion from 55 % to 22 %, but it also lowers the energy cost, from 5.8 to 3 kJ/L. Regarding the temperature at 4.9 cm post-plasma, N2 addition increases the temperature, while the CO2/CH4 ratio has no significant effect on temperature. We also calculated the temperature distribution with computational fluid dynamics simulations. The obtained temperature profiles (both experimental and calculated) show a decreasing trend with distance to the exhaust and provide insights in where to position a PPC bed.

Unraveling Temperature-Dependent Plasma-Catalyzed CO2 Hydrogenation

Hydrogenation of carbon dioxide to value-added chemicals and fuels has recently gained increasing attention as a promising route for utilizing carbon dioxide to achieve a sustainable society. In this study, we investigated the hydrogenation of CO2 over M/SiO2 and M/Al2O3 (M = Co, Ni) catalysts in a dielectric barrier discharge system at different temperatures. We compared three different reaction modes: plasma alone, thermal catalysis, and plasma catalysis. The coupling of catalysts with plasma demonstrated synergy at different reaction temperatures, surpassing the thermal catalysis and plasma alone modes. The highest CO2 conversions under plasma-catalytic conditions at reaction temperatures of 350 and 500 °C were achieved with a Co/SiO2 catalyst (66%) and a Ni/Al2O3 catalyst (68%), respectively. Extensive characterizations were used to analyze the physiochemical characteristics of the catalysts. The results show that plasma power was more efficient than heating power at the same temperature for the CO2 hydrogenation. This demonstrates that the performance of CO2 hydrogenation can be significantly improved in the presence of plasma at lower temperatures.

Non-thermal plasma activated CO2 hydrogenation over K- and La- promoted layered-double hydroxide supported Ni catalysts

The catalytic conversion of CO2 to CH4 and CO over nickel particles supported on layered-double hydroxide (MgAl) with different metal promoters was investigated under non-thermal plasma (NTP) conditions. It has been shown that lanthanum-promoted Ni catalysts significantly enhanced the CO2 conversion in comparison to the 10Ni/MgAl catalyst (33.4% vs. 89.3%). In comparison, for the potassium-promoted catalysts, CO2 conversion is similar to that of 10Ni/MgAl but the CO selectivity increased significantly (35.7% vs. 62.0%). The introduction of La and K to Ni catalysts increased the Ni dispersion and improved the reducibility of Ni species, thus affecting CO2 conversion and product selectivity. In situ DRIFTS showed similar reaction pathways for La- and K- promoted catalysts with Ni catalysts. However, the La and K promoters significantly improved the formation of formate species on the Ni surface, facilitating CO2 conversion to useful products.
