CO2 capture activity of a novel CaO adsorbent stabilized with (ZrO2+Al2O3+CeO2)-based additive under mild and realistic calcium looping conditions

Green preparation of CaO-based CO2 adsorbent by calcium-induced hydrogenation of shell wastes at room/moderate temperature

Capturing CO2 using clamshell/eggshell-derived CaO adsorbent can not only reduce carbon emissions but also alleviate the impact of trash on the environment. However, organic acid was usually used, high-temperature calcination was often performed, and CO2 was inevitably released during preparing CaO adsorbents from shell wastes. In this work, CaO-based CO2 adsorbent was greenly prepared by calcium-induced hydrogenation of clamshell and eggshell wastes in one pot at room/moderate temperature. CO2 adsorption experiments were performed in a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The adsorption performance of the adsorbents obtained from the mechanochemical reaction (BM-C/E-CaO) was superior to that of the adsorbents obtained from the thermochemical reaction (Cal-C/E-CaO). The CO2 adsorption capacity of BM-C-CaO at 650 °C is up to 36.82 wt%, but the adsorption decay rate of the sample after 20 carbonation/calcination cycles is only 30.17%. This study offers an alternative energy-saving method for greenly preparing CaO-based adsorbent from shell wastes.

Self-Regenerative Ni-Doped CaTiO3/CaO for Integrated CO2 Capture and Dry Reforming of Methane

In this work, a new type of multifunctional materials (MFMs) called self-regenerative Ni-doped CaTiO3/CaO is introduced for the integrated CO2 capture and dry reforming of methane (ICCDRM). These materials consist of a catalytically active Ni-doped CaTiO3 and a CO2 sorbent, CaO. The article proposes a concept where the Ni catalyst can be regenerated in situ, which is crucial for ICCDRM. Exsolved Ni nanoparticles are evenly distributed on the surface of CaTiO3 under H2 or CH4, and are re-dispersed back into the CaTiO3 lattice under CO2. The Ni-doped CaTiO3/CaO MFMs show stable CO2 capture capacity and syngas productivity for 30 cycles of ICCDRM. The presence of CaTiO3 between CaO grains prevents CaO/CaCO3 thermal sintering during carbonation and decarbonation. Moreover, the strong interaction of CaTiO3 with exsolved Ni mitigates severe accumulation of coke deposition. This concept can be useful for developing MFMs with improved properties that can advance integrated carbon capture and conversion.

Implications in the production of defossilized methanol: A study on carbon sources

The transition of the current fossil based chemical industry to a carbon-neutral industry can be done by the substitution of fossil carbon for defossilized carbon in the production of base chemicals. Methanol is one of the seven base chemicals, which could be used to produce other base chemicals (light olefins and aromatics). In this research, we evaluated the synthesis of methanol based on defossilized carbon sources (maize, waste biomass, direct air capture of CO2 (DAC), and CO2 from the cement industry) by considering carbon source availability, energy, water, and land demand. This evaluation was based on a carbon balance for each of the carbon sources. Our results show that maize, waste biomass, and CO2 cement could supply 0.7, 2, 15 times the carbon demand for methanol respectively. Regarding the energy demand maize, waste biomass, DAC, and CO2 from cement demand 25, 21, 48, and 45GJtonMeOH separately. The demand for water is 5300, 220, 8, and 8m3tonMeOH. And lastly, land demand was estimated to 1031, 36, 83, and 77m2tonMeOH per carbon source. The high-demanding-resource production of defossilized methanol is dependent on the availability of resources per location. Therefore, we analyzed the production of defossilized methanol in the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, China, and the USA. China is the only country where CO2 from the cement industry could provide all the demand of carbon. But as we envision society becoming carbon neutral, CO2 from the cement industry would diminish in time, as a consequence, it would not be sufficient to supply the demand for carbon. DAC would be the only source able to provide the demand for defossilized carbon.

The influence of nano filter elements on pressure drop and pollutant elimination efficiency in town border stations

Natural gas stands as the most ecologically sustainable fossil fuel, constituting nearly 25% of worldwide primary energy utilization and experiencing rapid expansion. This article offers an extensive comparative analysis of nano filter elements, focusing on pressure drop and pollutant removal efficiency. The primary goal was to assess the superior performance of nano filter elements and their suitability as an alternative for Town Border Station (TBS). The research encompassed a six-month examination period, involving routine pressure assessments, structural examinations, and particle characterization of the filter elements. The results revealed that nano filters showed better performance in adsorbing aluminum than conventional filters, possibly due to their cartridge composition. Nano filters contained phosphorus, sulfur, and copper, while conventional filters lacked these elements. The disparity can be attributed to the finer mesh of the nano filter, capturing smaller pollutants. Although the nano filter had minimal silicon, the conventional filter showed some, posing concerns. Despite having 19 extra pleats, the nano filter maintained gas flow pressure while capturing more particles than the conventional filter.

Effect of Steam on Carbonation of CaO in Ca-Looping

Ca-looping is an effective way to capture CO₂ from coal-fired power plants. However, there are still issues that require further study. One of these issues is the effect of steam on the Ca-looping process. In this paper, a self-madethermogravimetric analyzer that can achieve rapid heating and cooling is used to measure the change of sample weight under constant temperature conditions. The parameters of the Ca-looping are studied in detail, including the addition of water vapor alone in the calcination or carbonation stage and the calcination/carbonation reaction temperatures for both calcination and carbonation stages with water vapor. Steam has a positive overall effect on CO₂ capture in the Ca-looping process. When steam is present in both calcination and carbonation processes, it increases the decomposition rate of CaCO₃ and enhances the subsequent carbonation conversion of CaO. However, when steam was present only in the calcination process, there was lower CaO carbonation conversion in the following carbonation process. In contrast, when steam was present in the carbonation stage, CO₂ capture was improved. Sample characterizations after the reaction showed that although water vapor had a negative effect on the pore structure, adding water vapor increased the diffusion coefficient of CO₂ and the carbonation conversion rate of CaO.

UV-shielding properties of a cost-effective hybrid PMMA-based thin film coatings using TiO2 and ZnO nanoparticles: a comprehensive evaluation

This study aimed to assess the UV-shielding features of the PMMA-based thin film coatings with the addition of TiO₂ and ZnO nanoparticles as nanofillers considering different contents. Furthermore, the effect of TiO₂/ZnO nanohybrids at different ratios and concentrations was examined. The XRD, FTIR, SEM, and EDX analyses characterized the prepared films' functional groups, structure, and morphology. Meanwhile, the coatings' optical properties and UV-protecting capability were investigated by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy. The UV-Vis spectroscopic study revealed that as the concentration of nanoparticles increased in the hybrid-coated PMMA, the absorption in the UVA region increased. Overall, it can be concluded that the optimal coatings for PMMA were 0.1 wt% TiO₂, 0.1 wt% ZnO, and 0.025:0.025 wt% TiO₂: ZnO nanohybrid. Considering the acquired FT-IR of PMMA with different content of nanoparticles before and after exposure to the UV irradiation, for some films, it was confirmed that the polymer-based thin films degraded after 720 h, with either decreasing or increasing intensity of the degraded polymer, peak shifting, and band broadening. Notably, the FTIR results were in good agreement with UV-Vis outcomes. In addition, XRD diffraction peaks demonstrated that the pure PMMA matrix and PMMA coating films did not show any characteristic peaks indicating the presence of nanoparticles. All diffraction patterns were similar with and without any nanoparticles. Therefore, it depicted the amorphous nature of polymer thin film.

The catalytic performance of CuFe2O4@CQD nanocomposite as a high-perform heterogeneous nanocatalyst in nitroaniline group reduction

In this study, we fabricated an economical, non-toxic, and convenient magnetic nanocomposite of CuFe₂O₄ nanoparticles (NPs)/carbon quantum dots (CQDs) of citric acid via the co-precipitation method. Afterward, obtained magnetic nanocomposite was used as a nanocatalyst to reduce the ortho-nitroaniline (o-NA) and para-nitroaniline (p-NA) using a reducer agent of sodium borohydride (NaBH₄). To investigate the functional groups, crystallite, structure, morphology, and nanoparticle size of the prepared nanocomposite, FT-IR, XRD, TEM, BET, and SEM were employed. The catalytic performance of the nanocatalyst was experimentally evaluated based on the ultraviolet-visible absorbance to assess the reduction of o-NA and p-NA. The acquired outcomes illustrated that the prepared heterogeneous catalyst significantly enhanced the reduction of o-NA and p-NA substrates. The analysis of the absorption showed a remarkable decrease for ortho-NA and para-NA at λ_max = 415 nm in 27 s and λ_max = 380 nm in 8 s, respectively. The constant rate (k_app) of ortho-NA and para-NA at the stated λ_max was 8.39 × 10^-2 s^-1 and 5.48 × 10^-1 s^-1. The most highlighted result of this work was that the CuFe₂O₄@CQD nanocomposite fabricated from citric acid performed better than absolute CuFe₂O₄ NPs, since nanocomposite containing CQDs had a more significant impact than copper ferrite NPs.

The Catalytic Reduction of Nitroanilines Using Synthesized CuFe2 O4 Nanoparticles in an Aqueous Medium

The primary objective of this research is to investigate the reduction of 4-nitroaniline (4-NA) and 2-nitroaniline (2-NA) using synthesized copper ferrite nanoparticles (NPs) via facile one-step hydrothermal method as a heterogeneous nano-catalyst. Nitroanilines were reduced in the presence and without the catalyst with a constant amount (100 mg) of reducing agent of sodium borohydride (NaBH₄ ) at room temperature in water to amino compounds. To characterize the functional groups, size, structure, and morphology of as-prepared magnetic NPs, FTIR, XRD, SEM, and TEM were employed. The UV-Vis spectrum was utilized to explore the catalytic effect of CuFe₂ O₄ . The outcomes revealed that the synthesized CuFe₂ O₄ as a heterogeneous magnetic nano-catalyst catalyzed the reduction of 4-NA and 2-NA significantly faster than other candidate catalysts. The outcomes demonstrated that the catalyst catalyzed 4-nitroaniline to para-phenylenediamine (p-PDA) and 2-nitroaniline to ortho-phenylenediamine (o-PDA) with a constant rate of 7.49×10^-2  s^-1 and 3.19×10^-2  s^-1 , and conversion percentage of 96.5 and 95.6, in 40 s and 90 s, sequentially. Furthermore, the nanoparticles could be recovered by a magnetic separation method and reused for six consecutive cycles without remarkable loss of catalytic ability.

Optimizing the heat transfer characteristics of MWCNTs and TiO2 water-based nanofluids through a novel designed pilot-scale setup

This study aimed to investigate the effect of titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nano additives on the thermal performance of a pilot-scale cross-flow cooling tower. Moreover, it is a continuation of our previous study on the effect of using multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) nanofluid, and the results were compared with the results of TiO₂ and previous work. An experimental design by response surface methodology (RSM) based on central composite design (CCD) with two factors (concentration and flow rate) was used to study the effectiveness of the setup, Merkel number, and the cooling range. The nanofluids were prepared by the two-step method. The stability tests were performed considering different surfactants such as Gum Arabic, Triton X-100, and sodium dodecyl sulfate, and Gum Arabic was determined as the optimal surfactant. The visual method, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and Zeta potential analyses were used to ensure the stability of the nanofluids and determine the size distribution of the nanoparticles in the nanofluids. The findings revealed that the heat transfer characteristics of the working fluid were improved with the addition of nanoparticles. Moreover, by comparing the effect of nanoparticles, it was found that MWCNTs could enhance the thermal features better than TiO₂. The nanofluid containing 0.085 wt% of the MWCNTs improves the Merkel number, effectiveness, and cooling range by 28, 10.2, and 15.8%, respectively, whereas these values for TiO₂ containing nanofluids are 5, 4.1, and 7.4%, respectively. MWCNTs nanofluid with a concentration of 0.069 wt% and a flow rate of 2.092 kg/min was proposed for optimal system setup. Under these conditions, the cooling range, effectiveness, and Merkel number were about 23.5, 55.75%, and 0.64, respectively.

Theoretical and experimental study on the fluidity performance of hard-to-fluidize carbon nanotubes-based CO2 capture sorbents

Carbon nanotubes-based materials have been identified as promising sorbents for efficient CO2 capture in fluidized beds, suffering from insufficient contact with CO2 for the high-level CO2 capture capacity. This study focuses on promoting the fluidizability of hard-to-fluidize pure and synthesized silica-coated amine-functionalized carbon nanotubes. The novel synthesized sorbent presents a superior sorption capacity of about 25 times higher than pure carbon nanotubes during 5 consecutive adsorption/regeneration cycles. The low-cost fluidizable-SiO2 nanoparticles are used as assistant material to improve the fluidity of carbon nanotubes-based sorbents. Results reveal that a minimum amount of 7.5 and 5 wt% SiO2 nanoparticles are required to achieve an agglomerate particulate fluidization behavior for pure and synthesized carbon nanotubes, respectively. Pure carbon nanotubes + 7.5 wt% SiO2 and synthesized carbon nanotubes + 5 wt% SiO2 indicates an agglomerate particulate fluidization characteristic, including the high-level bed expansion ratio, low minimum fluidization velocity (1.5 and 1.6 cms−1), high Richardson—Zaki n index (5.2 and 5.3 > 5), and low Π value (83.2 and 84.8 < 100, respectively). Chemical modification of carbon nanotubes causes not only enhanced CO2 uptake capacity but also decreases the required amount of silica additive to reach a homogeneous fluidization behavior for synthesized carbon nanotubes sorbent.
