The Effect of a Training Video With Audio Description on the Breast Self-Examinations of Women With Visual Impairments

Introduction: Breast cancer is a significant health problem affecting the health of women globally. Breast self-examination is a procedure applied for the early detection of breast cancer. Given the barriers that women with visual impairments face to access health care and health education, there is a need to develop materials for breast self-examination training as a skills-based practice for this group. This study evaluated the effect of a training video with an audio description on the breast self-examination of women who were visually impaired. Methods: The universe of this quasi-experimental study comprised women who were visually impaired ( N = 70) who were registered members of the Manisa Altinokta Blind Association in Turkey. The women who participated in the study volunteered and met the selection criteria ( n = 60). They were divided into two groups by lot. The audio description group listened to a breast self-examination training video with an audio description ( n = 30). The control group listened to the training video accompanied by typical sound, without audio description ( n = 30). Before and after a training video, all women performed breast self-examination on a female mannequin torso. The skills of women in breast self-examination were evaluated using a checklist by a midwife who was non-researcher. Results: The skills differed significantly between the two groups after the video training ( p < 0.05). The audio description group correctly performed most of the skills required for breast self-examination. None of the women in the groups were able to apply steps for such self-examination before the training. Discussion: A breast self-examination training video with audio description can improve the self-examination skills of women with visual impairments. Implications for Practitioners: Women with visual impairments benefit from watching a breast self-examination training video with an audio description before performing self-examinations. Training videos with audio descriptions should, therefore, be prepared for the health education of individuals who are visually impaired.

Breast self-examination training video with the sign language for deaf women: An interventional study

OBJECTIVE

Breast self-examination is an important component for the early detection of breast cancer. The lack of knowledge of deaf women regarding breast examination and screenings may delay diagnosis of breast cancer. The objective of the study is to examine the effect of a video prepared with the sign language giving breast self-examination (BSE) skills to deaf women.

METHODS

This study used a quantitative, quasi-experimental, comparison group research design. Participants were recruited from the Izmir Association for the Protection and Development of the Deaf, Izmir, Turkey. The research was conducted between March 2018 and March 2019. BSE training video was prepared by the researchers. One group (n = 30) watched a BSE training video with sign language. The other group (n = 30) watched a BSE training video without sign language. After the training video, the BSE Skill Assessment of all women were assessed on a female torso mannequin model using BSE Skill Assessment Form.

RESULTS

The BSE skills of the women who watched the training video with sign language were significantly different from those who watched the training video without sign language (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

The training video with the sign language prepared by the researchers can significantly improve the BSE skills of deaf women.

Effects of smartphone application education combined with hands-on practice in breast self-examination on junior nursing students in South Korea

BACKGROUND

Breast self-examination is a convenient and effective way to detect breast abnormalities. Based on Dale's Cone of Experience theory, we hypothesized that the combination of a smartphone application with hands-on practice would have a greater impact than using a smartphone application alone. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of different educational methods on (a) knowledge, (b) attitudes, (c) skills, and (d) students' satisfaction with the learning methods.

METHODS

We conducted a pre- and post-test quasi-experimental design and developed a smartphone application using a video clip. One experimental group received smartphone-based education, another group received smartphone-based education combined with hands-on practice, and the control group received a one-time classroom lecture. We administered a pre-test, provided intervention, and conducted a post-test.

RESULTS

Among the three groups, the knowledge and attitude of the experimental groups were significantly higher than that of the control group. In addition, the group using the combination of the smartphone application and hands-on practice showed the highest score changes in skills and satisfaction with the learning methods.

CONCLUSIONS

Smartphone application use combined with hands-on practice could be an effective education method for breast self-examination.

The Effect of Health Education Given to Syrian Refugee Women in Their Own Language on Awareness of Breast and Cervical Cancer, in Turkey: a Randomized Controlled Trial

In general, refugees have an increased cancer burden because of living in difficult conditions and having low income. Refugee women may have difficulty in accessing healthcare services because of the fear of uncertainty, security concerns, language barriers, cultural differences, and economic problems. For this reason, it is thought that health education given to Syrian refugee women by overcoming the language problem (given in their own language-Arabic) increases the awareness of breast and cervical cancer. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of health education given to refugee women in their own language on the awareness of breast and cervical cancer. This is a randomized controlled trial with one control and one intervention group. The research sample consisted of 60 Syrian women (30 experiments, 30 controls), at least 18 years old, married, and literate women who were refugees in Hatay/Turkey. The research data were collected via the questionnaire form developed by the researchers. At the beginning of the study, there was no statistically significant difference in terms of age, education, economic status, gravida, and parity among the women in the experimental and control groups (p > 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference between the pre-test mean scores of the experimental and control groups (p > 0.05). However, there was a statistically significant difference between the post-test mean scores of the experimental and control groups (p < 0.005). In this study, it was determined that health education given to refugee women in their own language had a significant effect on breast and cervical cancer awareness. The attitudes and motivations are shaped, not only by personal information but also by the cultural changes within the community.

Can urban Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) be change agent for breast cancer awareness in urban area: Experience from Ahmedabad India

Background and Aims

Globally, breast cancer is one of the major public health problem. In Indian women, breast cancer is now the most common cancer, having recently overtaken cervical cancer in this respect. Breast Cancer though on the rise among Indian women, they still do not perceive themselves at risk. Poor awareness about the disease, its risk factors and the absence of population-based screening contribute to delayed diagnosis. The aim of this study is to assess knowledge and practice of breast cancer in general and breast self-examination (BSE) amongst urban accredited social health activist in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

Methods

The study was conducted in three phases: pre-intervention phase, intervention phase, and post-intervention phase during 2018. A total of 104 ASHA participants were included and awareness about breast cancer and practices of breast self-examination was assessed through interviewing two different groups at two points of time: Control and Intervention group at the base line and end line. Interventional breast health education was administrated through lectures, charts and silicon breast model for the basic knowledge of the breast cancer. The data had been analyzed by using software Epi info.

Results

There was a significant improvement in knowledge regarding breast cancer and breast self-examination among the intervention group from pre- to post-test. An overall increase in the awareness of breast cancer 33%, Method of doing BSE of 54% and 42% of BSE practice was observed in the study group after intervention.

Conclusion

A significant changes were observed in the knowledge. However, the behavior change requires reinforced training in regular interval.
