Abstract
The aim of our investigation was to examine the possible correlations between optical aberrations, angle kappa, angle alpha, and visual outcomes following cataract surgery. In total, 56 eyes of 28 patients were implanted with the Liberty 677MY trifocal intraocular lens (IOL). Pre- and postoperative higher-order aberrations, coma, astigmatism, angle alpha, and angle kappa were registered, along with uncorrected and corrected visual acuities at multiple distances. Visual acuity and contrast sensitivity defocus curves were plotted, and the areas under the curve were calculated 1 and 3 months postoperatively. Excellent visual outcomes were found at all distances. Patients reported low levels of dysphotopsia, and 96.4% of patients achieved complete spectacle independence. While angle kappa significantly decreased during cataract surgery (p = 0.0007), angle alpha remained unchanged (p = 0.5158). Angle alpha correlated with postoperative HOAs and had a negative impact on near vision (p = 0.0543). Preoperative corneal HOA and coma had a strong adverse effect on future intermediate and near vision. Residual astigmatism significantly affected postoperative intermediate vision (p = 0.0091). Our results suggest that angle kappa is not an optimal predictive factor for future visual outcomes, while angle alpha and the preoperative screening of optical aberrations might help patient selection prior to multifocal IOL implantation.

Abstract
Intraocular lens (IOL) misalignment and angle κ have had significant negative impact on post-operative quality of vision. ZEMAX software has been used to imitate the optical performance of pseudophakic eyes with different IOL surface designs at different orientations of IOL misalignment (decentration of 0.4 mm and tilt of 7°, and with the existence of 0.5 mm angle κ). We found that an aspheric balanced curve optic surface maintained better optical performance via inducing less coma aberration. Coma aberration played an unexpectedly important role in the optical performance. With angle κ, the impact of IOL misalignment on visual quality was associated with the orientation of decentration and tilt, indicating that the coma compensation also took effect in pseudophakic eyes. Due to the high incidence of post-operative IOL misalignment, our results provide evidence of the importance of considering personalized angle κ before cataract surgery for patients.

Abstract
Background To compare visual performance between the iris-fixated phakic intraocular len (pIOL) and implantable collamer len (ICL) to correct high myopia. Methods Twenty-four eyes underwent iris-fixated pIOL implantation and 24 eyes underwent ICL implantation. At the 6-month follow-up, the best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) were compared between the iris-fixated pIOL and ICL groups. The objective scatter index (OSI), modulation transfer function (MTF) cutoff, and ocular aberrations were performed to evaluate postoperative visual quality between the two groups. Results No significant difference was found in UDVA, BCVA, and spherical equivalent between the iris-fixated pIOL and ICL groups (P > 0.05). Six months after surgery, the following values were significantly higher in the ICL group than in the iris-fixated pIOL group: MTF cutoff, strehl ratio and optical quality analysis system values at contrasts of 9 %, 20 %, and 100 % (P < 0.01). The OSI in the iris-fixated pIOL group was higher than in the ICL group 6 months after surgery (P < 0.01). All high-order aberrations were slightly more severe in the iris-fixated pIOL group than in the ICL group 6 months after surgery, although only trefoil (P = 0.023) differed significantly in this regard. Conclusions Both iris-fixated lenses and ICLs can provide good visual acuity. ICLs confer better visual performance in MTF-associated parameters and induce less intraocular light scattering than iris-fixated pIOLs.

Abstract
In this paper, we introduce a novel concept of liquid-actuated aspheric lens (LAL) with a built-in aspheric polydimethylsiloxane lens (APL) to enable the design of compact optical systems with varifocal microscopic imaging. The varifocal lens module consists of a sandwiched structures such as 3d printed syringe pump functionally serves as liquid controller. Other key components include two acrylic cylinders, a rigid separator, a APL/membrane composite (APLMC) embedded PDMS membrane. In functional operation, the fluidic controller was driven to control the pressure difference and ALPMC deformation. The focal length can be changed through the pressure difference. This is achieved by the adjustment of volume change of injected liquid such that a widely tunable focal length. The proposed LAL can transform to 3 modes: microscopic mode (APLMC only), convex-concave mode and biconcave mode. It is noticeable that LAL in the operation of microscopic mode is tunable in focus via the actuation of APLMC (focal length is from 4.3 to 2.3 mm and magnification 50X) and can rival the images quality of commercial microscopes. A new lab-on-phone device is economically feasible and functionally versatile to offer a great potential in the point of care applications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS To evaluate the objective and subjective optical quality of all optic zone diffractive multifocal intraocular lens (IOL). METHODS Fifty patients (50 eyes) having phacoemulsification and IOL implantation surgery were enrolled. 25 patients were implanted with all optic zone diffractive multifocal IOL and 25 patients with monofocal IOL. Objective optical quality parameters under 4 mm pupil using Optical Quality Analysis System (OQAS), subjective visual acuity (VA) at 85 cd/m2 luminance and questionnaire concerning halo and visual function were assessed. RESULTS The multifocal group gained similar objective optical outcomes, such as OQAS values at contrast 100%, 20%, 9%, modulation transfer function cut-off and Strehl ratio, as the monofocal group. Objective scatter index (OSI) was significantly better in the monofocal group. Distance corrected near VA, uncorrected near VA, distance corrected intermediate VA and uncorrected intermediate VA were significantly better in the multifocal group. The difference in uncorrected distance VA and best corrected distance VA between the monofocal and multifocal groups was not significant. Mild halos and glare were reported in both groups and a significant difference between the two groups was not observed; however, moderate glare and halos were reported only in the multifocal group (2/25). There was no significant difference between the two groups when visual function was compared. CONCLUSIONS All optic zone diffractive multifocal IOLs provided almost the same objective optical quality as monofocal IOLs did under 4 mm pupil besides good all distance visual performance, but with greater OSI, indicating that implantation provides good optical quality in daytime but with more intraocular scatter light. Abstract
AIMS We investigated changes in visual function after wearing decorative tinted soft contact lenses with different pigment-free optical zone diameters. METHODS A prospective study was performed in 30 eyes of 30 healthy volunteers. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), ocular higher-order aberrations (HOAs), modulation transfer function (MTF), Strehl ratio and contrast sensitivity were evaluated after wearing clear lens and tinted lenses with different pigment-free optical zone diameters (4, 5 and 6 mm). RESULTS BCVA decreased from 0.00 logMAR after wearing a clear lens to 0.04±0.04 logMAR after wearing 4 mm optical zone lens (p<0.001). As the optical zone diameter decreased, ocular aberrations were induced. Total HOAs, coma aberration and secondary astigmatism showed significant difference between clear lens and 5 or 4 mm optical zone lenses (p<0.050). Spherical aberration and trefoil showed significant difference between clear lens and 4 mm optical zone lens (p<0.050). The results for Strehl ratio revealed poorer optical quality for both 5 and 4 mm optical zone lens (both p=0.002). The entire ocular MTF was significantly different, corresponding to the decreased optical zone diameter. The HOAs showed a correlation with the blocked pupil covered by the tinted part (r=0.435, p<0.001). In photopic and mesopic conditions, the contrast sensitivity decreased significantly with the reduced pigment-free optical zone diameters. CONCLUSION Decorative tinted contact lenses significantly increased ocular aberrations and decreased optical quality and contrast sensitivity, as the pigment-free optical zone diameter decreased. Therefore, consumers of tinted lenses should be informed about the possible disturbance in visual function. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER NCT02537275.

Abstract
Substantial aberrations are ubiquitous in many conventional adaptive lenses due to the existence of deformable interface and thus inevitably compromise the optical performance. In this paper, we introduce a novel concept of dual-function fluidic lenses (DFFL) with a built-in aspheric polydimethylsiloxane lens (APL) to enable the design of a compact optical system with tunable imaging and aberration suppression properties. This is achieved by varying both hydrostatic pressures (i.e. adjusting the injected liquid volume change) such that a widely tunable focal length and the simultaneously integrated APL for aberrations correction. DFFL can transform to 4 modes: microscopic mode (APL only), APL/concave mode, APL/plano mode, and APL/convex mode. Focal tunability of DFFL from 12/8 mm to about 90/65 mm (DI water/ethanol) is demonstrated without any mechanical moving components. Aberration characterization is carried out systematically and the low cost, high performance microscopic mode can be easily achieved by actuating the contact between APL and PDMS membrane. In addition, DFFL turning to microscopic mode (focal length 7.32 mm and magnification 50X) can rival the images quality of commercial microscopes.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the quality of vision in respect to high order aberrations and straylight perception after implantation of an aspheric, aberration correcting, monofocal intraocular lens (IOL). METHODS Twenty-one patients (34 eyes) aged 50 to 83y underwent cataract surgery with implantation of an aspheric, aberration correcting IOL (Tecnis ZCB00, Abbott Medical Optics). Three months after surgery they were examined for uncorrected (UDVA) and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), contrast sensitivity (CS) under photopic and mesopic conditions with and without glare source, ocular high order aberrations (HOA, Zywave II) and retinal straylight (C-Quant). RESULTS Postoperatively, patients achieved a postoperative CDVA of 0.0 logMAR or better in 97.1% of eyes. Mean values of high order abberations were +0.02±0.27 (primary coma components) and -0.04±0.16 (spherical aberration term). Straylight values of the C-Quant were 1.35±0.44 log which is within normal range of age matched phakic patients. The CS measurements under mesopic and photopic conditions in combination with and without glare did not show any statistical significance in the patient group observed (P≥0.28). CONCLUSION The implantation of an aspherical aberration correcting monofocal IOL after cataract surgery resulted in very low residual higher order aberration (HOA) and normal straylight.

Abstract
PURPOSE We investigated the correlations between optical quality parameters obtained from the double-pass system and ocular aberrations obtained from the ray-tracing aberrometer in multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) implanted eyes. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty eyes from 20 patients were enrolled in this study. Modulation transfer function cutoff frequency, The Strehl ratio, objective scatter index, and objective pseudo-accommodation obtained from the double-pass system were compared with root mean square (RMS) total aberration, RMS higher-order aberration, and spherical aberration obtained from the ray-tracing aberrometer. Additionally, parameters of the double-pass system and ray-tracing aberrometer were compared with manifested refraction values and subjective visual acuity, respectively. RESULTS There was no statistically significant correlation between optical quality parameters obtained from the double-pass system and ocular aberrations, except between the Strehl ratio and RMS total aberration (r=-0.566, p=0.018). No significant correlations were found between the parameters of both devices, and manifested refraction values or subjective visual acuity. CONCLUSION Optical quality parameters, especially the Strehl ratio, in multifocal IOL implanted eyes were affected by RMS total aberration. Further studies based on accurate measurements of ocular aberrations and additional optical quality parameters are needed to delineate relationships between optical quality parameters and ocular aberrations in multifocal IOL implanted eyes.

Abstract
PURPOSE To analyze the influence of simple myopic against-the-rule (ATR) and with-the-rule (WTR) astigmatism on uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) in eyes after monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. METHODS Patients with a postoperative spherical refractive error within ±0.5 diopter (D) and a negative cylindrical refractive error ≥0.5 D were enrolled and divided into two groups: ATR or WTR astigmatism. Age, pupil size, spherical equivalent refractive error, spherical refractive error, cylindrical refractive power, UDVA, corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) and ocular wavefront aberrations were compared between groups. Correlations between UDVA and other parameters were also examined within groups. RESULTS Twenty-five eyes (25 patients) with ATR astigmatism and 18 eyes (18 patients) with WTR astigmatism were evaluated. The logMAR UDVA was 0.30 ± 0.22 (mean ± SD) in the ATR group and 0.11 ± 0.15 in the WTR group, showing a significant difference between groups (P < 0.01). There were no significant differences in other parameters between groups. The UDVA was significantly correlated with spherical equivalent refractive error (r = -0.51, P < 0.01) and cylindrical refractive power (r = -0.48, P = 0.01) in the ATR group, but not in the WTR group. No other parameters were significantly correlated with UDVA in either group. CONCLUSION After monofocal IOL implantation, UDVA in eyes with simple myopic ATR astigmatism was worse than in eyes with simple myopic WTR astigmatism. Additionally, UDVA was significantly influenced by cylindrical refractive power in eyes with ATR astigmatism, but not in eyes with WTR astigmatism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To compare optical quality, ocular scattering, and higher-order aberrations (HOAs) after laser in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK) versus laser epithelial keratomileusis (LASEK). METHODS A total of 47 eyes from 47 participants who had undergone LASIK (group I) or LASEK (group II) procedure at least 6 months prior were enrolled. Ocular aberrations and modulation transfer function (MTF) values measured using iTrace, a ray-tracing type aberrometer, were compared to MTF (modulation transfer function) cut-off values, Strehl ratio, and objective indices of scattering obtained using the Objective Quality Analysis System II (OQAS II). RESULTS There was no significant correlation between the postoperative optical quality parameters and the HOAs between both groups. In group I, the MTF cut-off value was significantly correlated with cylinder refraction (p = 0.037), and the objective scattering index (OSI) was positively correlated with spherical equivalent (p = 0.023). In group II, there was a statistically significant correlation between the OSI and achieved refractive correction (p = 0.001). Regression analysis showed that the OSI was the most significant predictor of MTF cut-off values after refractive surgery. Additionally, MTF values measured by OQAS were significantly lower than those measured by iTrace without correlation. CONCLUSION Optical quality after refractive surgery may be influenced by not only ocular aberrations but also by scattering. Even though the accuracies of the machines used in this study to measure optical quality have yet to be proven, this study showed limited correlation among the values measured using the two different machines after refractive surgery. Therefore, for more generalized evaluation of visual function after refractive surgery, more advanced optical devices still need to be developed.
