Loss of the sticky harpoon – COI sequences indicate paraphyly of Stenus with respect to Dianous (Staphylinidae, Steninae)

Morphology of the abdominal segmental glands and spinning behaviour of Stenus larvae (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae)

We focus on the morphology of the "segmental glands" and their openings in third instar Stenus larvae. The location of the openings was similar in both studied species, with paired rosette-like structures present on the head, all thoracic segments and abdominal segments 1-9. No such openings could be found on the antennae, the maxillary palps, the urogomphi, and the legs as suggested in some older publications. We presume that the glands up to abdominal segment 7 are "adhesive" glands. They are compound glandular units consisting of a secretory syncytium with a common reservoir and a canal cell. The common reservoir is connected through a single efferent duct with the opening of the gland. Glands of abdominal segments 8 and 9 show differences in their length, number of reservoirs, the orientation of the efferent canal, the inner structures of the gland openings towards the exterior and the shape and content of the secretion vesicles indicating that they are silk glands for cocoon building. The spinning behaviour has been observed during the building of the hatching and pupation retreats. The larva first attaches to the substrate with its pygopod, secretes silk droplets from silk gland openings and pulls out a silk filament from the tip of its urogomphi. Whereas L1 and L2 instars produce an open single-layered net, L3 build a closed bi-layered cocoon.

Elevational gradients of species richness, community structure, and niche occupation of tropical rove beetles (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae: Steninae) across mountain slopes in Northern Thailand

We evaluated patterns of species richness, heterogeneity, niche occupation, and community structuring/similarity of staphylinid beetles of the subfamily Steninae across a 2500-m elevational gradient of a tropical mountain area in Northern Thailand. Predaceous Steninae were collected from a variety of habitat types. Increasing Sørensen dissimilarity with increasing elevation was explained by both species turnover (especially across the lower elevational zones) and declining numbers of species (especially across elevations > 1400 m). Unlike the strong decline of the number of species with increasing elevation, species density (i.e., total number of species divided by the number of collection sites at the respective elevational zone) showed a much smoother decline suggesting that the negative gradient in the number of species was superimposed by a land-area effect inherent in mountain shape. In both the litter-inhabiting species and waterfall-associated species, the numbers of species showed a mid-elevational peak. Species frequency was positively correlated to both elevational (“Dianous” and Stenus) and habitat niche width (Stenus only). Stenus showed high interspecific variety of wide to narrow niche widths for both elevation and habitat. Numbers of Palearctic and Oriental species deviated from statistical expectation, suggesting that climate niche conservatism has played a role in their elevational distribution. The distributional patterns of “Dianous” beetles, with their strong hygrobiont preferences associated with rocks in running water and waterfalls, are potentially explained by source–sink dynamics along mountain streams.

A specialized prey-capture apparatus in mid-Cretaceous rove beetles

Cai et al. report specialized prey-capture structures in two species of the stenine rove beetles from mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber. The discovery provides critical information about the origin and early evolution of both the novel predatory structure and of the subfamily Steninae (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae).

Cretaceous origin of the unique prey-capture apparatus in mega-diverse genus: stem lineage of Steninae rove beetles discovered in Burmese amber

Stenus is the largest genus of rove beetles and the second largest among animals. Its evolutionary success was associated with the adhesive labial prey-capture apparatus, a unique apomorphy of that genus. Definite Stenus with prey-capture apparatus are known from the Cenozoic fossils, while the age and early evolution of Steninae was hardly ever hypothesized. Our study of several Cretaceous Burmese amber inclusions revealed a stem lineage of Steninae that possibly possesses the Stenus-like prey-capture apparatus. Phylogenetic analysis of extinct and extant taxa of Steninae and putatively allied subfamilies of Staphylinidae with parsimony and Bayesian approaches resolved the Burmese amber lineage as a member of Steninae. It justified the description of a new extinct stenine genus Festenus with two new species, F. robustus and F. gracilis. The Late Cretaceous age of Festenus suggests an early origin of prey-capture apparatus in Steninae that, perhaps, drove the evolution towards the crown Stenus. Our analysis confirmed the well-established sister relationships between Steninae and Euaesthetinae and resolved Scydmaeninae as their next closest relative, the latter having no stable position in recent phylogenetic studies of rove beetles. Close affiliation of Megalopsidiinae, a subfamily often considered as a sister group to Euaesthetinae + Steninae clade, is rejected.

Genetic variability of two ecomorphological forms of Stenus Latreille, 1797 in Iran, with notes on the infrageneric classification of the genus (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae, Steninae)

In this study, the genetic diversity of Iranian populations of two widespread Stenus species representing two ecomorphological forms, the "open living species" Stenus erythrocnemus Eppelsheim, 1884 and the "stratobiont" Stenus callidus Baudi di Selve, 1848, is presented using data from a fragment of the mitochondrial COI gene. We evaluate the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I haplotypes and the intraspecific genetic distance of these two species. Our results reveal a very low diversity of COI sequences in Stenus erythrocnemus in contrast to Stenus callidus. Moreover, the COI based phylogeny of a selection of Iranian Stenus support the monophyly of some species groups of Stenus proposed by Puthz (2008) and contradicts the traditional infrageneric classification.

Species diversity vs. morphological disparity in the light of evolutionary developmental biology

BACKGROUND

Two indicators of a clade's success are its diversity (number of included species) and its disparity (extent of morphospace occupied by its members). Many large genera show high diversity with low disparity, while others such as Euphorbia and Drosophila are highly diverse but also exhibit high disparity. The largest genera are often characterized by key innovations that often, but not necessarily, coincide with their diagnostic apomorphies. In terms of their contribution to speciation, apomorphies are either permissive (e.g. flightlessness) or generative (e.g. nectariferous spurs).

SCOPE

Except for Drosophila, virtually no genus among those with the highest diversity or disparity includes species currently studied as model species in developmental genetics or evolutionary developmental biology (evo-devo). An evo-devo approach is, however, potentially important to understand how diversity and disparity could rapidly increase in the largest genera currently accepted by taxonomists. The most promising directions for future research and a set of key questions to be addressed are presented in this review.

CONCLUSIONS

From an evo-devo perspective, the evolution of clades with high diversity and/or disparity can be addressed from three main perspectives: (1) evolvability, in terms of release from previous constraints and of the presence of genetic or developmental conditions favouring multiple parallel occurrences of a given evolutionary transition and its reversal; (2) phenotypic plasticity as a facilitator of speciation; and (3) modularity, heterochrony and a coupling between the complexity of the life cycle and the evolution of diversity and disparity in a clade. This simple preliminary analysis suggests a set of topics that deserve priority for scrutiny, including the possible role of saltational evolution in the origination of high diversity and/or disparity, the predictability of morphological evolution following release from a former constraint, and the extent and the possible causes of a positive correlation between diversity and disparity and the complexity of the life cycle.

The pygidial defense gland system of the Steninae (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae): morphology, ultrastructure and evolution

The pygidial defense glands of the Steninae consist of two big (r1) and two smaller (r2) secretion filled sac-like reservoirs with associated secretory tissues and basal eversible membrane structures. The secretion is made up of deterrent and antimicrobial alkaloids stored in r1 as well as terpenes in r2. The gland cells filling r1 form a band shaped secretory tissue (g1) in an invagination of the reservoir membrane. The content of r2 is secreted by a tissue (g2) surrounding the efferent duct of r1 opposite to r2. In both gland tissues the secretion is produced in type IIIt gland cells and accumulates in an extracellular cavity surrounded by numerous microvilli of the gland cell membrane. After exocytosis the secretion enters an epicuticular duct and is transported to the corresponding reservoir via a conducting canal enclosed in at least one canal cell. While the structure of g1 is very similar in all species of the Steninae, g2 is often reduced. This reduction of the system r2/g2 is accompanied by a decreasing amount of terpenes in the total secretion and could be of interest for phylogenetic studies in the subfamily of the Steninae.
