Integrative taxonomy of the lizards Cercosaura ocellata species complex (Reptilia: Gymnophthalmidae)

Phylogenetic discordance and integrative species delimitation in the Mammillaria haageana species complex (Cactaceae)

Species complexes consist of very close phylogenetic relatives, where morphological similarities make it difficult to distinguish between them using traditional taxonomic methods. Here, we focused on the long-standing challenge of species delimitation in the Mammillaria haageana complex, a group that presents great morphological diversity that makes its taxonomy a puzzle. Our work integrates genomic, morphological, and ecological data to establish the taxonomic limits in the M. haageana complex, and we also studied the evolutionary relationships with the remainder of the M. ser. Supertextae species. Our genetic analyses, as well as morphological and ecological evidence, led us to propose that the M. haageana complex is made up of six distinct entities (M. acultzingensis, M. conspicua, M. haageana, M. lanigera, M. meissneri, and M. san-angelensis), mainly as a result of ecological speciation. A recent taxonomic proposal considered these taxa as a single species; therefore, we propose their recognition at the species level. Our results also show a high level of incomplete lineage sorting rather than reticulation, which is especially likely in recently diverged species such as those comprising M. ser. Supertextae. The species hypotheses proposed here may be useful in future extinction risk assessments and conservation strategies.

Clarifying the type locality of Liotyphlops wilderi (Garman, 1883) (Serpentes, Anomalepididae), with comments on other reptiles from São Cyriaco, Minas Gerais

The snake species Typhlops wilderi (today Liotyphlops wilderi) was described in 1883 based on specimens from São Cyriaco, in Minas Gerais, Brazil. The name of this type locality has been cited in different ways in the literature, making its geographic location confusing. Solving this question is an important issue for future taxonomy and systematic studies. After searching for information on the collector of the type series of L. wilderi (John Casper Branner) using the Google Scholar database, I found that São Cyriaco was a gold mining company located in the current municipality of Alvorada de Minas. Besides elucidating the type locality of L. wilderi, I searched for reptile specimens collected by Branner, deposited in collections registered at the VertNet Portal and SpeciesLink, and personally examined the extant material from Minas Gerais.

A New Species of Andean Gymnophthalmid Lizard (Squamata: Gymnophthalmidae) from the Peruvian Andes, and Resolution of Some Taxonomic Problems

The family Gymnophthalmidae is one of the most speciose lineages of lizards in the Neotropical region. Despite recent phylogenetic studies, the species diversity of this family is unknown and thus, its phylogenetic relationships remain unclear and its taxonomy unstable. We analyzed four mitochondrial (12S, 16S, Cytb, ND4) and one nuclear (c-mos) DNA sequences of Pholidobolus anomalus, Cercosaura manicata boliviana and Cercosaura sp., using the maximum likelihood method to give insights into the phylogenetic relationships of these taxa within Cercosaurinae. Our results suggest that Pholidolus anomalus is nested within the clade of Cercosaura spp., that material we collected near Oxapampa belongs to a new species of Cercosaura, and that lizards identified as Cercosaura manicata boliviana belong to a separate lineage, possibly a new genus. We assign Pholidobolus anomalus to Cercosaura, redescribe the species, and designate a neotype to replace the lost holotype. In addition, we describe the new species of Cercosaura, and comment about the taxonomic status of “Cercosaura manicata boliviana”incertae sedis.
