Abstract
Using a co-precipitation technique, the anionic form of sulisobenzone (benzophenone-4) sunscreen ingredient was incorporated into the interlayer space of CaFe-hydrocalumite for the first time. Using detailed post-synthetic millings of the photoprotective nanocomposite obtained, we aimed to study the mechanochemical effects on complex, hybridized layered double hydroxides (LDHs). Various physicochemical properties of the ground and the intact LDHs were compared by powder X-ray diffractometry, N2 adsorption-desorption, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance, infrared and Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and thermogravimetric measurements. The data showed significant structural and morphological deformations, surface and textural changes and multifarious thermal behavior. The most interesting development was the change in the optical properties of organic LDHs; the milling significantly improved the UV light blocking ability, especially around 320 nm. Spectroscopic results verified that this could be explained by a modification in interaction between the LDH layers and the sulisobenzone anions, through modulated π-π conjugation and light absorption of benzene rings. In addition to the vibrating mill often used in the laboratory, the photoprotection reinforcement can also be induced by the drum mill grinding system commonly applied in industry.

NANOMATERIALS (BASEL, SWITZERLAND) 2022; 12:nano12203680. [PMID: 36296870 PMCID: PMC9609385 DOI: 10.3390/nano12203680] [Citation(s) in RCA: 3] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 09/26/2022] [Revised: 10/13/2022] [Accepted: 10/17/2022] [Indexed: 05/13/2023]
Abstract
A parent Mg-Al-LDH was upgraded in its adsorption properties due to the incorporation of tri-metal species oxy(hydroxide) nanoparticles obtaining Mn2+/Zn2+/Fe3+/Mg-Al-LDH composite for the phosphate recovery from simulated urban treated wastewater. The physicochemical properties of the synthesized Mn2+/Zn2+/Fe3+/Mg-Al-LDH make promising for real application without being environmentally harmful. The performance of Mn2+/Zn2+/Fe3+/Mg-Al-LDH composite was evaluated through batch adsorption assays. The support of iron, manganese, and zinc (oxy)hydroxide nanoparticles onto the parent Mg-Al-LDH structure was performed by precipitation, isomorphic substitution, and complexation reactions. The main improvement of the Mn2+/Zn2+/Fe3+/Mg-Al-LDH composite was the highest phosphate adsorption capacity (82.3 mg∙g-1) in comparison to the parent Mg-Al-LDH (65.3 mg∙g-1), in a broad range of concentrations and the effective phosphate adsorption at neutral pH (7.5) near to the real wastewater effluents conditions in comparison to the conventional limitations of other adsorbents. The effectiveness of Mn2+/Zn2+/Fe3+/Mg-Al-LDH composite was higher than the conventional metal LDHs materials synthesized in a single co-precipitation step. The phosphate adsorption onto Mn2+/Zn2+/Fe3+/Mg-Al-LDH composite was described to be governed by both physical and chemical interactions. The support of Mn2+/Zn2+/Fe3+ oxy(hydroxide) nanoparticles over the parent Mg-Al-LDH was a determinant for the improvement of the phosphate adsorption that was governed by complexation, hydrogen bonding, precipitation, and anion exchange. The intra-particular diffusion also described well the phosphate adsorption onto the Mn2+/Zn2+/Fe3+/Mg-Al-LDH composite. Three specific stages of adsorption were determined during the phosphate immobilization with an initial fast rate, followed by the diffusion through the internal pores and the final equilibrium stage, reaching 80% of removal and the equilibrium within 1 h. The Mn2+/Zn2+/Fe3+/Mg-Al-LDH was strongly selective towards phosphate adsorption in presence of competing ions reducing the adsorption capacity at 20%. The Mn2+/Zn2+/Fe3+/Mg-Al-LDH has limited reusability, only 51% of the adsorbed phosphate could be recovered in the second cycle of the adsorption-desorption process. Around 14% of phosphate was loosely-bond to Mn2+/Zn2+/Fe3+/Mg-Al-LDH which brings the opportunity to be a new source of phosphorus. The use of eluted concentrates and the final disposal of the exhausted adsorbent for soil amendment applications can be an integral nutrient system (P, Mn, Zn, Fe) for agriculture purposes.

Abstract
Chitosan intercalated Ni-Fe layered double hydroxide (Ni-Fe LDH/Ch), prepared by co-precipitation was examined for adsorptive elimination of arsenic (III). Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis, X-ray diffraction, Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and Dynamic Light Scattering validated the successful synthesis of the composite with enhanced adsorption sites. Maximal As(III) removal was obtained at adsorbent dose 1 gL-1, pH 7, ultrasonication time 30 min, temperature 298 K, and initial arsenic concentration 50 mgL-1. The experimentally obtained values fit the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order dynamics well (R2 > 0.98), while thermodynamic evaluation confirmed exothermic and spontaneous reaction (ΔG = -8.13 kJ mol-1). Further, adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system and artificial neural network successfully predicted As(III) removal percentage with a high correlation coefficient (R2 > 0.94) and low statistical errors (MSE< 0.002, AARE< 0.063). The prepared material successfully brought down arsenic level by 62% in a natural water sample and showed good reusability up to 5 consecutive treatment cycles. The results recommended that Ni-Fe LDH/Ch has ample potential for arsenic remediation, and further investigations can be carried out for large-scale applications.

Abstract
Layered Double Hydroxides (LDH) have received great attention in the development of drug carrier systems. LDHs have become intelligent excipients of high technological potential for the pharmaceutical industry due to their ability to intercalate biomaterials in the interlayer region, adsorb substances on its vast surface area, have flexible structure, swelling properties, high chemical and thermal stability, modulate drug release, have high biocompatibility and be easily synthesized. This article, using typical examples, mainly addresses the systems formed between LDHs and antimicrobial, antineoplastic and anti-inflammatory agents, which constitute the main pharmacological classes of wide interest due to the problems encountered with low solubility, control in administration, stability in body fluids and toxicity, among others. Additionally, the article also reports on the recent development of ternary or quaternary (multicomponent systems) compounds based on LDH, bringing the advantages of targeted therapy, improving the aqueous stability of nanohybrids and the performance of these inorganic carriers.

Chitosan-Ni/Fe layered double hydroxide composites as an efficient solid phase extraction sorbent for HPLC-PDA monitoring of parabens in personal care products. CHEMOSPHERE 2021; 264:128429. Abstract
There is a dire need for development of efficient and sensitive methods to efficiently screen parabens. In this research, we focused on quantification of four parabens (i.e., methylparaben (MP), ethylparaben (EP), propylparaben (PP), and butyl paraben (BP)) using chitosan intercalated nickel/iron layered double hydroxide (CS-Ni/Fe-LDH) composites as solid phase extraction sorbent prior to HPLC-PDA analysis. CS-Ni/Fe LDH composites with a heterogeneous, porous texture, and coral reef-like structure exhibit appealing extraction efficiency for the target parabens due to the enhanced possibility for the formation of hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions. The performance of the composites was assessed and optimized for solid phase extraction of parabens from standard samples and real samples (rose water, cream, toothpaste, hair serum, and sunscreen). The LDH-SPE-HPLC method exhibited a wide linear range (e.g., 100-50,000 ng L-1), good linearity (R2 ≥ 0.999), and good precision (relative standard deviation (RSD) < 3%). This method successfully enriched selected parabens with remarkable recovery above 85.95% and a good RSD (0.01-2.90%). The quantitation of MP, EP, PP, and BP was made at detection range (and limits of detection (LOD)) of 5-15 (9.8), 11-21 (16.2), 6-18 (12.4), and 10-20 (15.6) ng L-1, respectively. The prepared composites also displayed excellent performance with enhanced reusability/durability (n = 30 cycles) and reproducibility (n = 5).

Abstract
Current study is focused to enhance the solubility of poorly soluble drug olanzapine (OLZ) by nanogels drug delivery system, as improved solubility is one of the most important applications of nanosystems. Poor solubility is a major issue, and 40% of marketed and about 75% of new active pharmaceutical ingredients are poorly water soluble which significantly affect the bioavailability and therapeutic effects of these drugs. In this study, nanogels, a promising system for solubility enhancement, were developed by free-radical polymerization technique. Different formulations were synthesized in which poloxamer-407 was cross-linked with 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS) with the help of cross-linker methylene bisacrylamide (MBA). The chemically cross-linked nanogels were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermos gravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), zeta size, swelling, sol-gel analysis, drug loading, solubility, and in vitro drug release studies. In order to determine the biocompatibility and cytotoxicity of nanogels to biological system, toxicity study on rabbits was also carried out. It was confirmed that the developed nanogels was thermally stable, safe, effective, and compatible to biological system, and the solubility of olanzapine (OLZ) was enhanced up to 38 folds as compared with reference product.
