Design and synthesis of silver nanoparticle anchored poly(ionic liquid)s mesoporous for controlled anticancer drug delivery with antimicrobial effect

Owing to the importance of drug delivery, the synthesis of advanced nanomaterials for targeted drug delivery plays a considerable role in medical treatment. One of the most prominent nanomaterials is PIL, which is used as controlled anticancer drug delivery and significantly improves the half-life and antitumor effect. In this study, a stable and effective drug carrier containing silver nanoparticles was reported for the drug delivery with an antimicrobial effect, and the capability of the drug carrier . PILP was synthesized by radical polymerization, and silver nanoparticles were anchored into PIL voids by in-situ reduction, which developed the adsorption antimicrobial effect and capability of the drug carrier. The synthesized nanocomposite was characterized. The Ag-PILP nanocomposite showed antibacterial activityagainst both E. coli and S. aureus with a MIC of 256 μg/mL, and bactericidal activity against E. coli and S. aureus strains with a MBC of 256 and 512 μg/mL, respectively.

Recent Advances in Stimuli-Responsive Doxorubicin Delivery Systems for Liver Cancer Therapy

Doxorubicin (DOX) is one of the most commonly used drugs in liver cancer. Unfortunately, the traditional chemotherapy with DOX presents many limitations, such as a systematic release of DOX, affecting both tumor tissue and healthy tissue, leading to the apparition of many side effects, multidrug resistance (MDR), and poor water solubility. Furthermore, drug delivery systems' responsiveness has been intensively studied according to the influence of different internal and external stimuli on the efficiency of therapeutic drugs. In this review, we discuss both internal stimuli-responsive drug-delivery systems, such as redox, pH and temperature variation, and external stimuli-responsive drug-delivery systems, such as the application of magnetic, photo-thermal, and electrical stimuli, for the controlled release of Doxorubicin in liver cancer therapy, along with the future perspectives of these smart delivery systems in liver cancer therapy.

In-situ formation of fluorophore cross-linked micellar thick films and usage as drug delivery material for Propranolol HCl

Polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether-block-poly(glycidyl methacrylate)-block-poly[2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] triblock copolymer was synthesized to prepare self-assembled micron sized films via a novel approach named as "phase separated micellar self assembly method". Liquid-air interface self assembly method via slow solvent evaporation was used to obtain micellar films. Cross-linking of polymer films was carried out by diffusion of fluorophore cross-linker into polymer solution from subphase. In-situ micellar formation was triggered via driven forces such as molecular interactions and slow evaporation of solvent. Thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole based cross-linker fluorophores containing alkali subphases were used to prepare highly fluorescent cross-linked micellar films. Micellar morphologies of the films were characterized with SEM while the cross-sections of fluorophore cross-linked films were observed with TEM analysis to examine diffusion of the dye as nano-sized particles into the polymer film. Convenience and usability of the micellar films as drug delivery material were demonstrated with Propranolol HCl release via UV-Vis spectroscopic studies. Optical properties of the films before and after drug release were determined via photoluminescence spectroscopy to be able to sense the completion of the drug release process. Swelling and shrinkage properties of the films were also determined in different pH values. These highly fluorescent polymer films have great potential as drug delivery materials and biomedical sensing applications.

Nanoengineering Branched Star Polymer-Based Formulations: Scope, Strategies, and Advances

Soft nanoparticles continue to offer a promising platform for the encapsulation and controlled delivery of poorly water-soluble drugs and help enhance their bioavailability at targeted sites. Linear amphiphilic block copolymers are the most extensively investigated in formulating delivery vehicles. However, more recently, there has been increasing interest in utilizing branched macromolecules for nanomedicine, as these have been shown to lower critical micelle concentrations, form particles of smaller dimensions, facilitate the inclusion of varied compositions and function-based entities, as well as provide prolonged and sustained release of cargo. In this review, it is aimed to discuss some of the key variables that are studied in tailoring branched architecture-based assemblies, and their influence on drug loading and delivery. By understanding structure-property relationships in these formulations, one can better design branched star polymers with suitable characteristics for efficient therapeutic interventions. The role played by polymer composition, chain architecture, crosslinking, stereocomplexation, compatibility between polymers and drugs, drug/polymer concentrations, and self-assembly methods in their performance as nanocarriers is highlighted.
