Color stability of a resin nanoceramic after surface treatments, adhesive cementation, and thermal aging

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Whether color changes in resin nanoceramic (RNC) restorations can occur because of material and adhesive interface degradation is unclear.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the color of RNCs submitted to surface treatments, cementation, and aging.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

RNC specimens (N=120) were produced with a thickness of 0.5 mm. The No Treatment-High/Low Translucency (NT-HT/LT) groups did not receive treatments; the Airborne-particle Abrasion-High/Low Translucency (AA-HT/LT) groups were airborne-particle abraded, and the Airborne-particle Abrasion Silane-High/Low Translucency (AASIL-HT/LT) groups received airborne-particle abrasion and a silane agent. Single specimens (n=60) were measured on a spectrophotometer before and after aging (50 000 cycles). The other half was mounted on composite resin bases and measured. The cleaned specimens were cemented (C) on the bases and measured (T0 and T1). ΔE₀₀, ΔL', ΔC', and ΔH' were obtained by using the CIEDE2000 formula and analyzed by using ANOVA and repeated-measures ANOVA. Multiple comparisons were made by using the Tukey HSD test (α=.05).

RESULTS

For single specimens, the greatest ΔE₀₀ values were observed in the AA-T1-LT resin (5.87). For mounted and cemented conditions, the greatest ΔE₀₀ values were found in the AA-C-T1-LT resin (1.74), and the ΔE₀₀ ranged from 0.75 (NT-OL) to 1.44 (AASIL-C-T1) for the HT resin (P<.001). The mounted and cemented specimens tended toward red and yellow, whereas lighter specimens were observed after cementation.

CONCLUSIONS

Aging affected the color of the RNCs evaluated. The single specimens showed greater color differences than the cemented specimens, reinforcing the importance of the adhesive cement in the optical behavior of thin restorations.

Cement opacity and color as influencing factors on the final shade of metal-free ceramic restorations

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the influence of opacity and color of luting cements on the final shade of metal-free restorations.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Five resin cement colors in combination with four different thicknesses of CAD/CAM ceramic materials were tested, and a composite substrate was used as dentin color reference (n = 3). Specimen color was measured with a spectrophotometer equipped with an integrating sphere before and after cementation (CIELAB). Cement and ceramic color and opacity (TP) were assessed by measuring the tested ceramic thickness as a 1-mm thick disk for each of the cement shades. The differences in color were evaluated (ΔE₀₀ ). Data were statistically analyzed by a Two-Way ANOVA followed by the Tukey Test for post-hoc comparison (P < .05) and multiple comparison Pearson's test (P < .05); the acceptability and perceptibility threshold were evaluated.

RESULTS

Statistically significant influence was found for factors ceramic thickness and cement shade (P < .001). Perceptible and unacceptable color changes were induced on the final restoration by resin cements (ranging from ΔE₀₀  = 0.69 ± 0.54 to ΔE₀₀  = 5.53 ± 0.46), the correlation between factors became strong (r²  > 0.6) in case of mismatch between color and translucency of cement and ceramic. Only the clear shade in combination with the thickest ceramic, resulted in an imperceptible color change (ΔE₀₀  = 0.69 ± 0.54).

CONCLUSIONS

The final shade of ceramic restorations can be influenced by resin cements; the magnitude of influence is related to the cement optical properties.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

In order to influence the final shade of a ceramic restoration, a cement more opaque than the restorative material should be used. Conversely, in the case of a fitting shade of the restoration, a cement more translucent than the restoration should be used to avoid undesired changes.

The influence of different shades and brands of resin-based luting agents on the final color of leucite-reinforced veneering ceramic

Objectives

This study aimed to evaluate the influence of different shades and brands of resin-based luting agents on the final color of a leucite-reinforced veneering ceramic.

Methods

This in-vitro study was done on 36 ceramic discs (IPS Empress I, 11 × 0.5 mm, A2 shade) and 36 cement disks (11 × 0.2 mm) made of Panavia SA Cement Plus (Kuraray Medical Inc.) and Choice2 (Bisco Inc., Schumburg) brands in translucent, universal A2, and opaque shades (n = 6 per each color in each resin cement brand). Color parameters (CIEL^*a^*b^*) of ceramic specimens were calculated without and with each brand/shade of resin-based luting agents by using a spectrophotometer, and put into CIELab formula. The color differences (ΔE) between the two sets of measurements were calculated and analyzed with two-way ANOVA and Tukey’s post hoc test (α = 0.05).

Results

Both the resin-based luting agent shade (P < 0.001) and brand (P = 0.023) significantly affected the color differences. ΔE values were significantly different between Panavia-opaque and Choice2-opaque (P < 0.001). No significant difference existed between ΔE of the two brands in A2 (P = 0.178) and translucent shades (P = 0.079). The ΔE values of Panavia-A2 was significantly different from the translucent and opaque shades of the same brand. Moreover, the ΔE of Choice2-translucent shade was significantly lower than that of A2 and opaque shades. The ΔE values were higher than the clinically-acceptable threshold in all groups (ΔE > 3.7) except for Choice2-translucent (ΔE = 3.37).

Conclusions

The final color of leucite-reinforced veneering ceramic can be affected by the same shades of resin-based luting agents from different brands and different shades of resin-based luting agents from the same brand.

Effects of Fibers on Color and Translucency Changes of Bulk-Fill and Anterior Composites after Accelerated Aging

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of glass and polyethylene fibers on the color and translucency change of bulk-fill and anterior composites before and after artificial accelerated aging (AAA). Two types of teflon molds were used to fabricate samples which were 13 mm in diameter and, respectively, 2 mm and 4 mm in height. Polyethylene fiber (PF) and glass fiber (GF) were incorporated in the middle of the composite samples. Color and translucency changes of each composite were evaluated before and after AAA with spectrophotometer. ANOVA and Tukey's HSD post hoc statistical analysis were used at a significance level of 0.05. Before AAA (for anterior composites), there were no significant differences in L^* and b^* parameters among the three groups (p > 0.05); there were no significant differences in L^* parameter between PF and GF groups or in TP between GF and control groups (p > 0.05) (for bulk-fill composites). After AAA, there were no significant differences in L^* parameter between GF and control groups, in a^* parameter between PF and control groups, in b^* parameter among all groups, or in TP parameter between GF and control groups (p > 0.05). Fiber reinforcement led to color and TP change in both anterior and bulk-fill resin composites.

The Effect of Accelerated Aging on the Colour Stability of Composite Resin Luting Cements using Different Bonding Techniques

INTRODUCTION

The main criterion of successful aesthetic restoration is to match the colour of the adjacent teeth. Porcelain laminate veneer is widely practiced indirect restoration in the contemporary aesthetic dentistry. The underlying luting cement colour influences the final outcome of the thin, translucent veneer shade. Hence, colour stability of luting cement is important criteria during their selection.

AIM

The objective of the study was to assess the colour stability of the different dentin bonding techniques in composite resin luting cements.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A total of forty intact, non carious teeth were prepared to receive Porcelain Laminate Veneers (PLV). The lithium disilicate PLV were fabricated, and fitting surface was conditioned with 5% hydrofluoric acid and silane application. According to the bonding technique employed for the cementation of the PLV, the teeth samples were randomly divided into the four groups of ten each. The Group I and Group II samples were conditioned with etch and wash; the polymerization of resin was accomplished with the dual cure for Group I and light cure for Group II. The Group III and Group IV samples were conditioned with self-etch and self-adhesive technique correspondingly. The teeth shade was recorded in similar locations with a spectrophotometer before and after subjecting them to the accelerated ageing process. The ageing process included the thermocycling process in water between 5°C and 55°C for 5000 cycles followed by 100 hours xenon light exposure. The data were analysed with SPSS 19.0 by ANOVA and LSD post-hoc comparison.

RESULTS

The higher mean colour change was observed in Group I sample (etch washdual cure) with a ∆E value of 2.491. The ∆E value for Group II (etch wash-light cure) and Group III (selfetch) was 1.110 and 2.357 respectively. The lowest mean colour change was observed in Group IV (self-adhesive) with ∆E at 0.614. Statistical analysis showed significant differences between Group IV and Group I; Group IV and Group III with p<0.05.

CONCLUSION

The self-adhesive and etch-wash light cure luting cements were found to be less susceptible for colour changes due to accelerated ageing.

Effect of vulcanization temperature and dental stone colour on colour degradation of maxillofacial silicone elastomers

Background

Colour degradation is a major problem in maxillofacial silicone elastomers. Recent studies have focused on colour stability and the mechanical properties of the silicone elastomers. A colour match is also essential for the acceptance of the prosthesis by the patient. The aim of this study is to assess the colour degradation of the silicone elastomer after being moulded in different colours of dental stones at two different vulcanization temperatures.

Methods

Five different colours of dental stones were used to fabricate a total of 120 silicone blocks using a Cosmesil M511 maxillofacial silicone elastomer. Vulcanization was completed at two different temperatures (25 and 100° Celsius). Colour measurements were obtained with a Conica Minolta spectrophotometer. The CIEDE2000 formula was used to calculate the colour differences (∆E00). Two-way ANOVA, one-way ANOVA with Bonferroni corrected post-hoc p values and independent samples t-test were used for the statistical analyses.

Results

High temperature vulcanization causes lightening of the maxillofacial silicone elastomers without regard to the dental stone colour (p = 0.001). Specimens moulded in green stone lightened least at room temperature (p = 0.999). Compared to the control group, at high temperature, all specimens moulded in coloured dental stones darkened significantly (p < 0.001 for white, blue and yellow; p = 0.006 for green; p = 0.045 for reddish-brown). In the high temperature group, the shift to a green chroma was significant in the white, yellow and green dental stones groups (p = 0.001, p = 0.002, p < 0.001, respectively). The mean b* of the high temperature control group was higher than that of the room temperature control group (p < 0.001). The only ∆E00 score lower than the perceptibility threshold for dental materials (∆E00 = 1.30) was between the room temperature control group and the room temperature green dental stone group (∆E00 = 0.96).

Conclusions

Green and blue dental stones cause less colour degradation in silicone elastomers. Reddish-brown dental stones cause the most colour degradation in silicone elastomers. At 100 °C, the colour of the silicone elastomer lightens and yellows even if the elastomer is vulcanized in a stainless steel mould. White, yellow and reddish-brown dental stones make the silicone elastomer appear more yellow even if the elastomer is vulcanized at room temperature.

Influence of the color of composite resin foundation and luting cement on the final color of lithium disilicate ceramic systems

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Lithium disilicate restorations are commonly used, particularly in the anterior region. The color of the underlying composite resin foundation (CRF) and luting cement may negatively affect the color of lithium disilicate ceramic restorations.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of CRF and resin cement materials on the color of lithium disilicate ceramics in 2 different translucencies.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Twenty disks (11×1.5 mm, shade A2) were fabricated from medium-opacity (mo) (n=10) and high-translucency (ht) (n=10) lithium disilicate (Lds) blocks (IPS e.max Press). Five CRF disks (11×3 mm) were fabricated in 5 different shades (A1, A2, A3, B2, C2) and 30 resin cement disks (11×0.2 mm) in the shades of translucent (Tr), universal (Un=A2), and white-opaque (Wo). Ceramic specimens were placed on each CRF, and the resin cement combination and color was measured with a spectrophotometer. CIELAB color coordinates were recorded, and the color coordinates of both ceramics on the shades of the A2 CRF and resin cement were saved as the control. Color differences (ΔE₀₀) between the control and test groups were calculated. Data were analyzed with 3-way analysis ANOVA and compared with the Tukey HSD test (α=.05).

RESULTS

The ΔE₀₀ values were influenced by the shades of the CRF, resin cement materials, and also their interactions (P<.05). The ΔE₀₀ values were not affected by the ceramic type. The ΔE₀₀ values of the Wo cement groups (1.73 to 2.96) were significantly higher than those of the other cement shades (0.88 to 1.29) for each ceramic type and CRF shade (P<.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Lithium disilicate ceramics in 2 different translucencies were similarly influenced by the color of the underlying cement and CRF. When translucent and universal cement shades were used, the core shade did not affect the final color of the ceramics. White opaque cement caused clinically unacceptable color changes in both ceramics on all shades of CRFs except the C2 CRF and when high translucency ceramic was used on the A2 CRF. These changes were clinically acceptable, but perceptible.

Transmitted irradiance through ceramics: effect on the mechanical properties of a luting resin cement

OBJECTIVES

The study aims to characterise the curing behaviour of a light-curing luting composite (Variolink® Aesthetic LC, Ivoclar Vivadent) polymerised at different exposure times (10 s, 20 s) through different ceramics (IPS Empress CAD and IPS e.max CAD, Ivoclar Vivadent) and ceramic thicknesses (no ceramic, 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2 mm).

MATERIAL AND METHOD

Curing units' (Bluephase Style, Ivoclar Vivadent) variation in irradiance delivered up to 10-mm exposure distance as well as the incident and transmitted irradiance and radiant exposure up to 6-mm ceramic thickness were assessed on a laboratory-grade spectrometer. A total of 216 (18 groups, n = 12) thin and flat luting composite specimens of 500-μm thickness were prepared and stored after curing in a saturated vapour atmosphere for 24 h at 37 °C. Micro-mechanical properties (Vickers hardness, HV and indentation modulus, Y_HU) were determined by means of an automatic micro-hardness indenter.

RESULTS

Within the study design, the radiant exposure received by the luting composite varied from 2.56 to 24.75 J/cm², showing a high impact on the measured properties. Comparing the effect of the parameters exposure time, ceramic thickness and type, the highest influence on the micro-mechanical parameters was identified for exposure time, while this influence was stronger on HV (p < 0.001, η _P² = 0.452) than on Y_HU (p < 0.001, η _P² = 0.178). The influence of ceramic type was significant but low (η _P² = 0.161 on HV and 0.113 on Y_HU), while the influence of ceramic thickness was the lowest (η _P² = 0.04 and 0.05, respectively).

CONCLUSIONS

Slightly higher irradiance values were transmitted through Empress CAD up to a ceramic thickness of 3 mm (p < 0.001), while being comparable with e.max for thicker slices. Differences in translucency between ceramics were reflected in the micro-mechanical properties of the luting composite.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

The radiant exposure reaching the luting composite is determined by the incident irradiance, exposure time, ceramic type and ceramic thickness. At the analysed incident irradiance, exposure time was the most consistent parameter affecting the micro-mechanical properties of the luting composite, and this effect was strongly reflected in the more translucent ceramic Empress CAD. Within the curing conditions, an exposure time of 20 s is recommended.

Influence of Different Types of Resin Luting Agents on Color Stability of Ceramic Laminate Veneers Subjected to Accelerated Artificial Aging

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of accelerated aging (AAA) on the color stability of resin cements for bonding ceramic laminate veneers of different thicknesses. The occlusal surfaces of 80 healthy human molars were flattened. Ceramic laminate veneers (IPS e-max Ceram) of two thicknesses (0.5 and 1.0 mm) were bonded with three types of luting agents: light-cured, conventional dual and self-adhesive dual cement. Teeth without restorations and cement samples (0.5 mm) were used as control. After initial color evaluations, the samples were subjected to AAA for 580 h. After this, new color readouts were made, and the color stability (ΔE) and luminosity (ΔL) data were analyzed. The greatest color changes (p<0.05) occurred when 0.5 mm veneers were fixed with light-cured cement and the lowest when 1.0 mm veneers were fixed with conventional dual cement. There was no influence of the restoration thickness when the self-adhesive dual cement was used. When veneers were compared with the control groups, it was verified that the cement samples presented the greatest alterations (p<0.05) in comparison with both substrates and restored teeth. Therefore, it was concluded that the thickness of the restoration influences color and luminosity changes for conventional dual and light-cured cements. The changes in self-adhesive cement do not depend on restoration thickness.

Influence of abutment material and luting cements color on the final color of all ceramics

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of different abutment materials and luting cements color on the final color of implant-supported all-ceramic restorations.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Ten A2 shade IPS e.max Press disc shape all-ceramic specimens were prepared (11 × 1.5 mm). Three different shades (translucent, universal and white opaque) of disc shape luting cement specimens were prepared (11 × 0.2 mm). Three different (zirconium, gold-palladium and titanium) implant abutments and one composite resin disc shape background specimen were prepared at 11 mm diameter and appropriate thicknesses. All ceramic specimens colors were measured with each background and luting cement samples on a teflon mold. A digital spectrophotometer used for measurements and data recorded as CIE L*a*b* color co-ordinates. An optical fluid applied on to the samples to provide a good optical connection and measurements on the composite resin background was saved as the control group. ΔE values were calculated from the ΔL, Δa and Δb values between control and test groups and data were analyzed with one-way variance analysis (ANOVA) and mean values were compared by the Tukey HSD test (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

One-way ANOVA of ΔL, Δa, Δb and ΔE values of control and test groups revealed significant differences for backgrounds and seldom for cement color groups (p the 0.05). Only zirconium implant abutment groups and gold palladium abutment with universal shade cement group were found to be clinically acceptable (ΔE ≤ 3.0).

CONCLUSION

Using titanium or gold-palladium abutments for implant supported all ceramics will be esthetically questionable and white opaque cement will be helpful to mask the dark color of titanium abutment.
