Abstract
Monodisperse polystyrene spheres are functional materials with interesting properties, such as high cohesion strength, strong adsorptivity, and surface reactivity. They have shown a high application value in biomedicine, information engineering, chromatographic fillers, supercapacitor electrode materials, and other fields. To fully understand and tailor particle synthesis, the methods for characterization of their complex 3D morphological features need to be further explored. Here we present a chemical imaging study based on three-dimensional confocal Raman microscopy (3D-CRM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), focused ion beam (FIB), diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy for individual porous swollen polystyrene/poly (glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene di-methacrylate) particles. Polystyrene particles were synthesized with different co-existing chemical entities, which could be identified and assigned to distinct regions of the same particle. The porosity was studied by a combination of SEM and FIB. Images of milled particles indicated a comparable porosity on the surface and in the bulk. The combination of standard analytical techniques such as DRIFT and NMR spectroscopies yielded new insights into the inner structure and chemical composition of these particles. This knowledge supports the further development of particle synthesis and the design of new strategies to prepare particles with complex hierarchical architectures.

Abstract
Abstract Introduction To prevent the shrinkage stresses produced during polymerization, composite resins of low polymerization shrinkage were developed. Objective To evaluate the microtensile bond strength in class I cavities restored by acid-etching the cavosurface angle and with composite resins indicated for posterior teeth. Material and method 48 healthy molars were selected and divided into six groups (n = 8), considering that the cavosurface enamel of three groups was etched with 35% phosphoric acid. The teeth were restored with the Clearfil SE Bond adhesive system and Filtek Z350 XT, Empress Direct, and Charisma Diamond composite resins, which were light-cured for 40 seconds. After 24 hours, the teeth were taken to a cutting machine, which produced sections in the buccolingual and mesiodistal directions. This resulted in toothpicks of 0.9×0.9 mm that were taken to the universal testing machine for the microtensile bond strength test. Statistical analysis was performed with ANOVA and Tukey’s test (p < 0.05). Result There was no statistically significant difference between the groups evaluated. Conclusion Acid-etching the cavosurface angle did not affect the performance of restorations, probably due to the adhesive system used.

Abstract
This article aims to review the research done on the silorane-based resin composites (SBRC) regarding polymerization shrinkage and contraction stresses and their ability to improve the shortcomings of the methacrylate-based resin composites (MRBC). Special attention is given to their physical and mechanical properties, bond strength, marginal adaptation, and cusp deflection. The clinical significance of this material is critically appraised with a focus on the ability of SBRC to strengthen the tooth structure as a direct restorative material. A search of English peer-reviewed dental literature (2003-2015) from PubMed and MEDLINE databases was conducted with the terms "low shrinkage" and "silorane composites." The list was screened, and 70 articles that were relevant to the objectives of this work were included.

Abstract
Background. One of the problems with composite resin restorations is gap formation at resin‒tooth interface. The present study evaluated the effect of preheating cycles of silorane- and dimethacrylate-based composite resins on gap formation at the gingival margins of Class V restorations. Methods. In this in vitro study, standard Class V cavities were prepared on the buccal surfaces of 48 bovine incisors. For restorative procedure, the samples were randomly divided into 2 groups based on the type of composite resin (group 1: di-methacrylate composite [Filtek Z250]; group 2: silorane composite [Filtek P90]) and each group was randomly divided into 2 subgroups based on the composite temperature (A: room temperature; B: after 40 preheating cycles up to 55°C). Marginal gaps were measured using a stereomicroscope at ×40 and analyzed with two-way ANOVA. Inter- and intra-group comparisons were analyzed with post-hoc Tukey tests. Significance level was defined at P < 0.05. Results. The maximum and minimum gaps were detected in groups 1-A and 2-B, respectively. The effects of composite resin type, preheating and interactive effect of these variables on gap formation were significant (P<0.001). Post-hoc Tukey tests showed greater gap in dimethacrylate compared to silorane composite resins (P< 0.001). In each group, gap values were greater in composite resins at room temperature compared to composite resins after 40 preheating cycles (P<0.001). Conclusion. Gap formation at the gingival margins of Class V cavities decreased due to preheating of both composite re-sins. Preheating of silorane-based composites can result in the best marginal adaptation.

Abstract
SUMMARY
This study aimed to quantify the concentration of hydrogen peroxide into the pulp chamber in the presence or absence of adhesive enamel restorations and to analyze the resin-dentin interface of bleached groups. Bovine incisors (120) were randomly divided into three groups according to enamel treatment (n=40 each): (1) enamel without restoration (control); (2) enamel cavities (3 mm diameter × 1.5 mm depth) restored with a silorane-based (SB) system; or (3) enamel cavities (3 mm diameter × 1.5 mm depth) restored with a dimethacrylate-based (DB) system. Restorations were thermocycled, and all groups were submitted to one application of 35% hydrogen peroxide (HP) agent for 45 minutes and subjected to four light activation methods (n=10 each): without light, light-emitting diode (LED), LED/diode laser, or halogen light. Acetate buffer solution was placed into the pulp chamber before bleaching, and this solution was collected to spectrophotometrically determine the concentration of HP that reached the pulp chamber after bleaching. Rhodamine B was added to the HP agent and applied on additional enamel samples of each group for 24 hours. Samples were sectioned mesiodistally, and the bleaching agent was traced using confocal microscopy. According to two-way analysis of variance and Tukey test (α=0.05), the HP concentration in the pulp chamber of the control group was significantly lower than that of the SB group (p<0.05), regardless of light activation. No differences were observed between DB and SB groups and between control and DB groups, except for the DB halogen light activated group, which exhibited higher HP intrapulpal concentration (p<0.05). Confocal microscopy exhibited HP diffusion through the interface of the SB and DB restored groups as well as enamel prisms in the control group. The SB restorative system increased the HP diffusion into the pulp chamber, but HP was able to diffuse even in the absence of enamel restorations.

Marginal integrity of low-shrinking versus methacrylate-based composite: effect of different one-step self-etch adhesives. Odontology 2016; 105:291-299. Abstract
The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of composite type and adhesive system on the quality of marginal adaptation in standardized Class V cavities before and after thermo-mechanical loading (TML). The cavities were restored using different combinations of three adhesive systems [(Silorane System Adhesive (SSA), Clearfil S3 Bond (S3), G-Bond (G-B)] and two resin composite materials (Filtek Silorane, Clearfil AP-X). Six groups (n = 10): Group A (SSA-Primer + SSA-Bond, Filtek Silorane), Group B (SSA-Primer + SSA-Bond, Clearfil AP-X), Group C (S3 + SSA-Bond, Filtek Silorane), Group D (S3 + SSA-Bond, Clearfil AP-X), Group E (G-B + SSA-Bond, Filtek Silorane) and Group F (G-B + SSA-Bond, Clearfil AP-X) were defined. Marginal adaptation was assessed on replicas in the SEM at 200 × magnification before and after TML (3000 × 5-55 °C, 1.2 106 × 49 N; 1.7 Hz) under simulated dentinal fluid. The highest scores of continuous margins (%CM) were observed in the group F (G-B + SSA-Bond, Clearfil AP-X: before loading 96.4 (±3.2)/after loading 90.8 (±7.0)). A significant effect of adhesive system, composite type and loading interval was observed on the results (p < 0.05). Significantly lower scores of %CM were observed for silorane-based composite (Filtek Silorane) after TML in comparison with methacrylate-based composite (Clearfil AP-X) considering total marginal length (p < 0.05). For both Filtek Silorane and Clearfil AP-X, G-Bond performed significantly better than SSA-Primer and Clearfil S3 Bond (p < 0.05). For all combinations of one-step self-etch adhesives and SSA-Bond resin coating, silorane-based low-shrinking composite exhibited inferior marginal adaptation than did the methacrylate-based composite.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The effect of nanoleakage on the integrity of resin-dentin bond has been in interest for long-term adhesion. AIM This study evaluated the nanoleakage in premolar teeth restored with low shrinkable resin composite. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 40 human premolars were used for nanoleakage evaluation in this study. Each group was divided into four equal groups; Group A: using silorane with its adhesive system. Group B: using silorane with G-bond. Group C: using Filtek supreme composite with G-bond. Group D: using Filtek supreme composite with AdheSE adhesive. Nanoleakage analysed using Scaning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectrometery (EDX). RESULTS The amount of silver present in hybrid layer depend on the adhesive used; this indicated different nanoleakage expressions in different adhesive systems. Filtek Z350 composite with G-bond showed clear silver uptake in both the adhesive and hybrid layer. Low shrinkable resin composite (silorane) with its adhesive system showed less silver penetration and slight silver peak on the elemental energy spectroscopy of energy dispersive X-Ray spectrometry (EDS) as compared to other samples. CONCLUSION Adhesives used between different groups, influence the location and degree of nanoleakage. There is difference in nanoleakage patterns between two-step and one-step adhesives and also among the one-step adhesives themselves.

Abstract
Background: There are many concerns regarding the marginal seal of composite restorations, especially when composite restorations are subjected to cyclic loading. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of cyclic loading on the microleakage of silorane based composite compared with low shrinkage methacrylate-based composites in class V cavities. Materials and Methods: In this in vitro study, class V cavities were prepared on the facial and lingual surfaces of 48 human premolars (96 cavities). The teeth were randomly divided into four groups of 12 teeth (24 cavities) each and restored as follows: Group 1 (Siloran System Adhesive + Filtek P90), Group 2 (All Bond SE + Aelite LS Posterior), Group 3 (Futurabond NR + Grandio), and Group 4 (G-Bond + Kalore-GC). All the specimens were thermocycled for 2000 cycles (5-55°C) and then half of the specimens from each group, were Load cycled. All teeth were immersed in 0.5% basic fuchsine dye, sectioned, and observed under a stereomicroscope. Data were analyzed using Wilcoxon test, Kruskal–Wallis, and Mann–Whitney U-tests. P < 0.05 was considered as significant. Results: In both unloaded and loaded groups, no statistically significant differences were observed among four composites at the occlusal margin, but a significant difference in gingival microleakage was found between Aelite and silorane. Occlusal and gingival microleakage was not affected by cyclic loading in none of the four restorative materials. Conclusion: Silorane did not provide better marginal seal than the low shrinkage methacrylate-based composites (except Aelite). In addition, cyclic loading did not affect the marginal microleakage of evaluated composite restorations.

Abstract
Background: The current study evaluated the micro-shear bond strengths of a new low-shrinkage composite resin to dentin. Materials and Methods: In this in-vitro study, 70 extracted premolars were assigned to one of seven groups (n = 10): Group 1: OptiBond Solo Plus (Opt; Kerr); Group 2: SE Bond (SE; Kuraray); Group 3: Silorane System Adhesive (SSA; 3M ESPE); Group 4: OptiBond Solo Plus + LS Bond (Opt LS); Group 5: SE Bond + LS Bond (SE LS); Group 6: OptiBond Solo Plus (Opt Po); and Group 7: SE Bond (SE Po). Occlusal dentin was exposed and restored with Filtek LS (3M ESPE) in groups 1 to 5 and Point 4 (Kerr) in groups 6 and 7. After thermocycling (1000 cycles at 5/55C), micro-shear bond test was carried out to measure the bond strengths. The results were submitted to analysis of variance and post hoc Tukeytests (P < 0.05). Results: Two-way ANOVA showed no significant differences between the two types of composite resin (P = 0.187), between bonding agents (P = 0.06) and between composite resin and bonding agents (P = 0.894). Because P value of bonding agents was near the significance level, one-way ANOVA was used separately between the two composite groups. This analysis showed significant differences between silorane composite resin groups (P = 0.045) and Tukey test showed a significant difference between Groups 4 and 5 (P = 0.03). Conclusion: The application of total-etch and self-etch methacrylate-based adhesives with and without use of a hydrophobic resin coating resulted in acceptable bond strengths.

Abstract
Objectives: This study evaluated cuspal deflection in premolar teeth restored with low shrinkable resin composite. Each group was divided into four equal groups according to the type of resin composite and the adhesive used as follows: group A: Using low shrinkable resin composite (silorane) with its adhesive system; group B: Using low shrinkable composite (silorane) with G-bond; group C: Using Filtek Z350 composite with G-bond; and group D: Using Filtek Z350 composite with AdheSE. For this study, the extracted non-carious maxillary second premolars were selected. Forty teeth that showed no more than 5% variation in their dimensions were used. A significant increase in cuspal deflection of cavities restored with the methacrylate-based (Filtek Z350) compared with the silorane (P90) resin-based composites was obtained. Conclusion: The change in the organic matrix or materials formulation of the resin composite using silorane has a positive effect on controlling the cusp deflection.

Abstract
CONTEXT The complexities of the oral environment, the dentin substrate, and the different bond and composite resin systems represent a challenge to the maintenance of reasonable bond between the composite resin and the tooth structure. AIMS To evaluate the effect of the adhesive system on bond strength between silorane-based composite resin and dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fourteen human molars extracted were selected and vertically cut into 3 dentin fragments, randomly divided among the experimental groups and restored with Z250 and P90 composite resin using different adhesive protocols (Adper Single Bond 2, Silorano primer, Adper SE Plus, and Scotchbond Multiuse). Two composite resin cylinders were built up on each dentin surface (n = 10) and subjected to a micro-shear bond strength test. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis of variance and Tukey test (P = 0.05). RESULTS According to the results, Kruskal-Wallis test evidenced at least one statistical significant difference (P = 0.001). The Tukey test showed statistically significant differences among the group (P < 0.05). Group PSM8 (P90 + SM) showed statically significant higher results when compared with groups PSP4 (P90 + SP), PSB2 (P90 + SB), and ZSE5 (Z250 + SE). CONCLUSION The results evidenced that the monomer of the adhesive system has an effect on bond strength between the composite resin and dentin.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION To evaluate the influence of storage time on the elastic modulus, micromorphology, nanoleakage, and micromechanical behavior of the dentin-adhesive interfaces of five adhesive systems (Scotchbond Multi-Purpose, Clearfil SE Bond, One Up Bond F, Adper Easy One, and Filtek LS Adhesive) after 24h (T0) and 12 months (T1). METHODS Fifty teeth were restored and distributed according to each adhesive system (n=10). At least four specimens were obtained from each tooth. One specimen was evaluated under SEM to obtain the micromorphology of dentin-adhesive interface (DAI). Two specimens were used to assess nanoleakage, one tested in T0 and the other in T1. The last specimen was used for nanoindentation, in T0 and T1, to obtain the initial and final mechanical properties of DAI structures. Two non-restored teeth were evaluated under SEM to obtain the dentin morphology. Laboratorial data were used to build 15 finite element models to assess the maximum principal stress in each time of analysis. RESULTS Storage resulted in hydrolysis of the dentin-adhesive interfaces for all groups. Silver impregnation increased for all groups after 1 year storage (p<.05), except for Clearfil SE Bond. In general, a decrease in elastic modulus values was observed for all groups from T0 to T1 (p<.05), mainly at the hybrid layer. The FEAs showed higher stress levels at T1 than T0 simulations for all adhesives. CONCLUSION At T1, degradation occurred at the dentin-adhesive interface formed by all adhesives, and the intensity of degradation differed depending on the type of adhesive system used. The interface formed by the self-etching primer containing the 10-MDP functional monomer showed the highest stability among the adhesive systems after 12 months of storage.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of pre-etching on the bond strength of silorane-based composite specific adhesive system to dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty human molars were randomly divided into 5 groups according to the different bonding strategies. For teeth restored with silorane-based composite (Filtek Silorane, 3M ESPE), the specific self-etching adhesive system (Adhesive System P90, 3M ESPE) was used with and without pre-etching (Pre-etching/Silorane and Silorane groups). Teeth restored with methacrylate based-composite (Filtek Z250, 3M ESPE) were hybridized with the two-step self-etching system (Clearfil SE Bond, Kuraray), with and without pre-etching (Pre-etching/Methacrylate and Methacrylate groups), or three-step adhesive system (Adper Scotchbond Multi-Purpose, 3M ESPE) (Three-step/Methacrylate group) (n = 6). The restored teeth were sectioned into stick-shaped test specimens (1.0 × 1.0 mm), and coupled to a universal test machine (0.5 mm/min) to perform microtensile testing. RESULTS Pre-etching/Methacrylate group presented the highest bond strength values, with significant difference from Silorane and Three-step/Methacrylate groups (p < 0.05). However, it was not significantly different from Preetching/Silorane and Methacrylate groups. CONCLUSIONS Pre-etching increased bond strength of silorane-based composite specific adhesive system to dentin.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to assess the effect of 38% carbamide peroxide on the microleakage of class V cavities restored with either a silorane-based composite or two methacrylate-based composites. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 96 class V cavities were prepared on the buccal surface of extracted human teeth with both enamel and dentin margins and were randomly assigned into three groups of Filtek P90 (3M-ESPE) + P90 system adhesive (3M-ESPE)(group A), Filtek Z250 (3M-ESPE) + Adper Prompt L-Pop (3M-ESPE)(group B) and Filtek Z350XT (3M-ESPE) + Adper Prompt L-Pop (group C). Half of the teeth were randomly underwent bleaching (38% carbamide peroxide, Day White, Discus Dental, applying for 15 min, twice a day for 14 day) while the remaining half (control) were not bleached. Dye penetration was measured following immersion in basic fuchsine. Data were statistically analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests at a level of 0.05. RESULTS No significant differences were found between composites in the control groups in enamel (p = 0.171) or dentin (p = 0.094) margins. After bleaching, microleakage of Z250 (in enamel [p = 0.867] or dentin [p = 0.590] margins) and Z350 (in enamel [p = 0.445] or dentin [p = 0.591] margins) did not change significantly, but the microleakage of P90 significantly increased in both enamel (p = 0.042) and dentin (p = 0.002) margins. CONCLUSIONS No significant differences were noted between the bleached and control subgroups of two methacrylate-based composites in enamel or dentin margins. Microleakage of silorane-based composite significantly increased after bleaching.

Abstract
SUMMARY
The aim of this study was to assess the influence of light-curing time on the nanohardness (H) and reduced elastic modulus (Er) of components (underlying dentin, hybrid layer, adhesive, and composite) of methacrylate- and silorane-based restorations after 24 hours and six months of storage. Class II slot preparations were carried out in human molars (n=3) and restored with methacrylate (Clearfil SE Bond [Kuraray] + Filtek Z250 [3M ESPE]) or silorane (LS restorative system [3M ESPE]) restorative systems and light-cured using light-emitting diode at 1390 mW/cm2 for the recommended manufacturers' time or double time. Restorations were sectioned, and bonded dentin-resin interfaces were embedded in epoxy resin and polished for evaluation with a Berkovich fluid cell tip (TI 700 Ubi-1 nanoindenter, Hysitron). Data were statistically analyzed by analysis of variance and Tukey's test (alpha=0.05). Overall, the H and Er values were higher for methacrylate-based restorations than for silorane materials (p≤0.05), an increase in curing time did not improve the H and Er of the bonded interface components of either material (p>0.05), and aging significantly decreased the mechanical properties of interface components of both resin-based restorative systems (p≤0.05). In general, nanomechanical properties decreased after six months of storage, the methacrylate restorative system exhibited higher H and Er than silorane, and light-curing time did not influence the properties tested.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate shear bond strength (SBS) values of a methacrylate (FZ 250) and a silorane-based (FS) resin composite to various underlying materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 80 samples were prepared with four different underlying materials; a flowable (FLC) and a bulk-fill flowable composite (BFC), and a conventional (CGIC) and resin modified glass-ionomer cement (RMGIC). These underlying materials were laminated plus to methacrylate or silorane-based resin composites (n = 10). To evaluate the specimens SBS values were evaluated with a universal testing machine (cross-head speed; 1.0 mm/min). Statistical comparisons were carried out using two-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test with a significance level of P < 0.05. RESULTS SBS values for FZ250 were significantly higher than for FS for all of the underlying materials tested (P < 0.05). SBS values of FZ250 to BFC were significantly higher than to all other materials (P < 0.05), whereas SBS values of FS did not vary significantly according to underlying material (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION The use of FS in conjunction with any of the tested materials showed lower SBS than the FZ 250. Also, new low elastic modulus liner BFC presented slightly good interfacial adhesion so, the usage of BFC as an underlying material may be preferable for FZ 250.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effect of saliva contamination on the shear bond strength of a new two-step self-etch adhesive (P90 system adhesive) to dentin and to determine the effect of contaminant removing treatments on the recovery of bond strengths. MATERIALS AND METHODS The buccal surfaces of 40 human premolars were ground to expose dentin. The specimens were randomly divided into four groups. Group 1 is uncontaminated and serves as the control group. Further groups were divided based on the step in the bonding sequence when the contamination had occurred as follows: Group 2 (primer, saliva contamination, rinse and dry), group 3 (after procedure of group 2, reapplication of primer), and group 4 (after procedure like in control group, saliva contamination, rinse and dry). Filtek P90 composite resin cylinders of 3 mm diameter and 3 mm length were fabricated on the surfaces. Shear bond strength testing was done in an Instron Universal Testing Machine and the data were subjected to one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Student's t-test. RESULTS With P90 system adhesive, group 2 and group 4 showed lower shear bond strength than group 1 (control) and group 3 (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Saliva contamination significantly decreased the shear bond strength of the adhesive to dentin.

Abstract
Aim and Objectives: To comparatively evaluate the microleakage and microgap formation along the gingival margin in class II cavities restored with silorane resin composite and methacrylate resin composite with and without flowable resin liner. Materials and Methods: Sixty human mandibular premolars were distributed into three groups, each group containing 20 teeth (n = 20). Mesial (subgroup A) and distal (subgroup B) box cavities were prepared with gingival margin above and below cemento enamel junction (CEJ), respectively, in each tooth and restored as follows — Group I — Silorane resin composite with self-etch primer and bond (Filtek P90, 3M ESPE MN, USA). Group II — Methacrylate resin composite (Filtek P60, 3M ESPE MN, USA) and self-etch adhesive (Adper Easy one, 3M ESPE MN, USA). Group III — Methacrylate resin composite with self-etch adhesive and a flowable resin liner (Filtek Z350 XT, 3M ESPE MN, USA). The teeth were thermocycled and immersed in 50% silver nitrate solution before sectioning. The specimens were observed under scanning electron microscope for dye penetration and microgap formation. The data was subjected to statistical analysis using Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U test using SPSS version 18. Results: Subgroup A in all the three groups showed significantly less microleakage and microgap formation compared to subgroup B with P < 0.05. Intergroup comparison of subgroup A did not show statistically significant difference, whereas subgroup B showed statistically significant difference for microleakage between group I and group II (P = 0.003), group III and group II (P = 0.002). Conclusion: Silorane resin composite and methacrylate resin with liner showed significantly less microleakage in class II cavities along the gingival margin placed below CEJ compared to methacrylate resin without liner. All the study groups showed less microleakage and microgap formation along the gingival margin placed above CEJ.

Abstract
UNLABELLED The aim of this study was to compare the microleakage of class V cavities restored by silorane resin with those restored by the methacrylate resin system. Sixty standardized class V cavities were prepared on premolars. The teeth were restored with Filtek(TM) Silorane and Silorane(TM) System Adhesive, Filtek(TM) Silorane and Adper(TM) Easy One and Filtek(TM) Supreme XT and Adper(TM) Easy One. The area and the depth of dye leakage were measured. Considering dye leakage area, the best results were achieved in group I (mean-M=0.114±0.083 mm(2)), then in group III (M=0.384±0.480 mm(2)) and finally in group II (M=5.389±6.587 mm(2)). Considering the depth of dye leakage, there was a significant difference between group I (mean rank-m.r.=1.23±0.44 mm) and II (1.98±0.83 mm), group II and III (1.23±0.40 mm). In this study silorane composite and its adhesive showed less microleakage than the methacrylate composite, and it showed compatibility only with its assigned adhesive. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Less microleakage of silorane restorations could provide better and long lasting composite fillings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study compared the hydrolytic degradation of composite restorations based on methacrylate and silorane systems regarding bond strength and marginal adaptation. Materials and methods. Sixty bovine incisors were ground flat to obtain a 2-mm thick slice in which conical preparations were made. The specimens were randomly distributed into four groups (n = 15) according to the restorative system (silorane-Filtek LS/P90 adhesive; methacrylate-Filtek P60/Adper Easy Bond) and the degradation protocol (control: immediate evaluation; hydrolytic degradation: 6 months storage in water at 37°C). Marginal adaptation was evaluated using a dye staining technique. Digital images of the stained gaps were obtained to calculate the marginal gap (%), the ratio between the stained margins and the total length of the margin. Push-out bond strength test was conducted (0.5 mm/min). Marginal adaptation data was submitted to Kruskal-Wallis test and the bond strength data to two-way ANOVA/Tukey's test (α = 0.05). Results. The marginal adaptation was neither affected by the restorative system nor by the degradation protocol, although the number of perfect sealed reduced after 6 months. No significance was observed among the groups. No significance was noted between the silorane- and the methacrylate-based restorations for immediate bond strength. After the hydrolytic degradation, the silorane system showed higher bond strength then the methacrylate restorations. Conclusion. The silorane and methacrylate restorative systems produce restorations with similar immediate interfacial quality and 6 months of water storage does not cause significant bonding degradation for both systems. The silorane restorations show an increase in the bond strength after 6 months.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to compare the micro-tensile bond strength of methacrylate resin systems to a silorane-based restorative system on dentin after 24 hours and six months water storage. MATERIAL AND METHODS The restorative systems Adper Single Bond 2/Filtek Z350 (ASB), Clearfil SE Bond/Z350 (CF), Adper SE Plus/Z350 (ASEP) and P90 Adhesive System/Filtek P90 (P90) were applied on flat dentin surfaces of 20 third molars (n=5). The restored teeth were sectioned perpendicularly to the bonding interface to obtain sticks (0.8 mm2) to be tested after 24 hours (24 h) and 6 months (6 m) of water storage, in a universal testing machine at 0.5 mm/min. The data was analyzed via two-way Analysis of Variance/Bonferroni post hoc tests at 5% global significance. RESULTS Overall outcomes did not indicate a statistical difference for the resin systems (p=0.26) nor time (p=0.62). No interaction between material × time was detected (p=0.28). Mean standard-deviation in MPa at 24 h and 6 m were: ASB 31.38 (4.53) and 30.06 (1.95), CF 34.26 (3.47) and 32.75 (4.18), ASEP 29.54 (4.14) and 33.47 (2.47), P90 30.27 (2.03) and 31.34 (2.19). CONCLUSIONS The silorane-based system showed a similar performance to methacrylate-based materials on dentin. All systems were stable in terms of bond strength up to 6 month of water storage.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES DC of three commercial two-step etch-and-rinse adhesives across the dentine-adhesive interface was investigated using micro-Raman spectroscopy. The hypothesis tested was that no difference in DC would exist among the adhesives tested. METHODS Adper Scotchbond 1XT (3M ESPE), Prime&Bond NT (Dentsply DeTrey), and Ambar (FGM) were applied on human dentine disks (n=9). Composite increments of 2mm were then applied on the adhesive surface. Raman spectra were collected along the dentine-adhesive interface. The relative intensities of the peaks associated with the mineral (PO(4)(3-) at 960cm(-1)) and the adhesive (CC at 1640cm(-1); phenyl CC at 1610cm(-1)) were used to identify the adhesive within the hybrid layer and calculate its DC. RESULTS Adper Scotchbond 1XT and Ambar showed similar DC (79±7% and 77±7%, respectively), while a lower DC was found for Prime&Bond NT (70±7%; p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS The hypothesis tested was rejected because differences were found among the adhesives tested. The difference in DC among the three adhesive systems can be attributed to different monomer compositions and solvents. Further studies are needed to correlate DC with other mechanical properties of these adhesives. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Insufficient polymerization of an adhesive can result in a weak hybrid layer, and the presence of unreacted monomers may result in degradation of the polymeric network, decreasing the strength and longevity of the bond. In the present study, Adper Scotchbond 1XT and Ambar performed significantly better than Prime&Bond NT.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the fracture resistance of teeth restored with resin composite. Forty-eight maxillary premolar teeth were chosen and randomly divided to six groups: G1 (control): sound teeth; G2: MOD preparation, unrestored; G3: MOD + Adper Single Bond 2/P60; G4: MOD + Adper Easy One/P60; G5: MOD + P90 restorative system; G6: MOD + Adper Easy One/P90 Bond/P90. Specimens were subjected to compressive axial loading (0.5 mm/min). Flexural strength and the modulus of elasticity were also tested (n = 7). The only statistical equivalence with sound teeth was noted for G3 (p < 0.05). Flexural strength and the modulus of elasticity varied among the composites tested (n = 10). The reestablishment of the resistance to fracture in premolars subjected to Class II MOD preparations is restorative-system-dependent. The silorane restorative system is not able to recover the resistance to fracture.

Abstract
Aim: To compare the difference in microleakage values using conventional and new low-shrink Silorane composites using the dye penetration method. Background: With improvement in adhesive technology, problems associated with composites have been largely overcome. However, microleakage due to polymerization shrinkage still remains a challenge. New Silorane-based composites are alleged to have less than 1% polymerization shrinkage, which would potentially decrease the microleakage, and hence, resolve this longstanding issue. Materials and Methods: The teeth were randomly divided into three groups (A,B, and C). Group A was restored with conventional composite (Valux™ Plus), with a total-etch protocol, Group B was restored with conventional composite, with a self-etch protocol, and group C were restored with a silorane-based composite (Filtek TMP90). Thermocycling at 200 cycles between 5 and 55°C ± 2°C with a dwell time of 60 seconds was conducted. The teeth were stained with methylene blue dye and then sectioned and viewed under a dissection microscope, afer which the microleakage was evaluated. Results: The interexaminer reliability was evaluated using the kappa score, which was acceptable (61 – 78%). The total-etch group performed statistically and significantly better (P < 0.001) at the occlusal margin and was marginally and statistically significant (P = 0.05) at the gingival margin compared to the self-etch conventional and Silorane groups. Conclusions: The Silorane composite did not perform better than the conventional composites, however, it may have its uses and requires further research.

Abstract
UNLABELLED This study evaluated the microtensile bond strength (μ-TBS) of low-shrinkage composites with their corresponding adhesive systems, Filtek Silorane/Silorane adhesive (SIL, 3M ESPE AG, Seefeld, Germany) and Aelite LS/One-Step Plus (AL, BISCO Inc, Schaumburg, IL, USA) in cavities with different C-factors. Filtek Z250/Adper Single Bond Plus (Z, 3M ESPE, St Paul, MN, USA) was used as a control. METHOD Standardized Class I cavities were prepared in extracted human molars after removing occlusal enamel. Cavities were assigned into six different C-factors by applying nail polish to four walls, three walls, two walls adjacent to each other, two walls opposite to each other, one wall, or no walls. Resin composites with their corresponding adhesive systems were applied according to manufacturer instructions. Specimens were sectioned to obtain four rectangular beams from the center of the restorations and μ-TBS was measured. Data were analyzed by Weibull survival analysis. Shrinkage stresses of the resin composites were determined after 30 minutes from the start of light-curing using a tensometer testing machine. Flexure elastic modulus was determined using standard procedures, in accordance with ISO 4049. Data for shrinkage stress and elastic modulus were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance followed by a Tukey multiple-comparisons test (p<0.05). RESULTS μ-TBS of both SIL and AL were not affected by different C-factors; however, the bond strength of Z decreased significantly when the C-factor increased. Shrinkage stress results were 0.94 ± 0.1, 1.79 ± 0.18, and 2.14 ± 0.23 MPa for SIL, AL, and Z, respectively. The flexural modulus of both the SIL and the AL was significantly lower than that of Z. CONCLUSIONS Increasing C-factor did not negatively affect the bond strength of low-shrinkage composites.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To quantify monomer elution from different adhesive systems using reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and correlate this elution with the ratio of carbon-carbon double bonds from monomer to polymer (RDB) obtained using micro-Raman spectroscopy. METHODS Thirty dentine discs were cut from 30 human, intact, third molars and randomly allocated to five groups according to the adhesive applied: total-etch, Excite (Ivoclar Vivadent), two-bottle self-etch, Clearfil SE (Kuraray), one-bottle self-etch, Clearfil 3S (Kuraray), ormocer-based, Admira (Voco) and Filtek Silorane adhesive system (FS) (3M ESPE). Monomer elution was studied 1h, 6h, 24h, 96h and 7 days after immersion in 75% ethanol/water. The RDB was calculated immediately after light-curing and thereafter at 24h and 7 days. The data were statistically analysed using one-way ANOVA and Pearson's correlation coefficient (p<0.05). RESULTS More than 90% of the whole elution occurred during the first 1h, except for BisGMA in FS, with the highest absolute amount from Clearfil SE and the highest wt% from Admira. Initial RDB was in the ascending order FS<Admira<Excite<Clearfil SE<Clearfil 3S. In all groups, the RDB was significantly higher after 24h and 7 days than immediately after light-curing (p<0.05). Negative correlation was found only for the elution of HEMA and the RDB of Clearfil 3S. CONCLUSIONS Different adhesive systems showed different monomer elution kinetics. In all systems, the RDB increased after monomer elution. Overall, no direct correlation exists between the RDB of adhesives and the elution of unreacted monomers.
