Abstract
The present study assessed the effect of active application of self-etch adhesives with diode laser irradiation on the shear dentin bond strength. Sixty bovine incisors, each embedded individually in hard plaster blocks, were divided into two groups based on the adhesive system used: Group 1 Adper Easy One and Group 2 Clearfil SE Protect. Based on the application technique of self-etch adhesives, each main group was further divided into three subgroups: passive application, active application with a micro-brush, and active application with a 976-nm diode laser tip (phototherapy active application). Shear bond strength tests were conducted using a universal testing machine and the data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA. Post hoc multiple comparisons were performed with the Tukey HSD test. Additionally, the statistical analysis of failure mode distribution was carried out using the chi-squared test (p < 0.05). While the adhesive system exhibited significant differences in shear dentin bond strengths, there were no significant differences in application techniques. Regardless of the application technique, Clearfil SE Protect demonstrated significantly higher dentin bond strength than Adper Easy One. In the present study, the utilization of phototherapy through a 976-nm diode laser for the active application of the tested self-etch adhesives demonstrated similar initial dentin bond strengths to conventional application methods.

Abstract
AIM The purpose of this study was to evaluate the 18-month retrospective study of self-etch adhesive (Prime&Bond One Select) and self-etch mode of universal adhesives (Single Bond Universal, Gluma Bond Universal) applied to non-carious cervical lesions according to the World Dental Federation criteria. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty patients without any systemic disease, good oral hygiene, having at least 20 teeth and six non-carious cervical lesions treated using a self-etch mode of adhesives operated between January and March 2017. Accordingly, 335 restorations were evaluated according to the World Dental Federation criteria at 3, 6, 12 and 18 months. Pillai's Trace test was used to determine the interaction of criteria with time and adhesive systems. IBM SPSS Statistics 21.0 program was used in the analysis. Value of P < 0.05 was accepted as a criterion for statistical significance. RESULTS At the end of 18 months, participation was 100%. There was a statistically significant difference P < 0.05 between Prime&Bond One Select and Single Bond Universal, Prime&Bond One Select and Gluma Bond Universal in the 18-month period. In terms of marginal staining, fracture of material and retention, recurrence of caries, erosion and abfraction, tooth integrity criteria at the end of the 18 months, Prime&Bond One Select performed clinically very good, Single Bond Universal and Gluma Bond Universal performed clinically good according to World Dental Federation criteria. Marginal adaptation criteria, Prime&Bond One Select, Single Bond Universal and Gluma Bond Universal performed clinically good. Retention loss rate was found to be the lowest in Prime&Bond One Select and the highest in Gluma Bond Universal. CONCLUSION Accordingly, 18-month evaluation of all adhesives used in the study showed clinically acceptable results in all of the World Dental Federation criteria.

Abstract
One of the major goals of adhesive dentistry is to improve the interaction of the already-existing adhesives with different substrates by using different application techniques. Thus, the objective of the present in vitro study was to assess the bond performance of four adhesive systems, Prime&Bond Universal (PBU), Clearfil SE Bond (CSE), OptiBond Universal (OBU), and OptiBond FL (OBFL), to dentin using various application modes: passive application (PA), active application (AA), Compo-Vibes modified application (CVM), and Compo-Vibes application (CV). Eighty extracted human molars were allocated into four groups based on the application modalities tested. The micro-tensile bond strength as well as fracture mode were tested in accordance with ISO/TS 11.405 after 24 h and 6 months of aging. Adhesive contact angle (CA) and scanning electron microscope analysis were also performed (n = 3). Statistical tests were performed with α = 0.05. After 24 h, a significant difference with a higher bond strength value was found for PBU in the AA modality and for CSE in the CVM modality (p < 0.05). However, no significant difference was shown between the techniques used among the other adhesives (OBFL and OBU). Moreover, at 24 h, only the PA demonstrated significant differences between the tested materials (p < 0.05). After 6 months, CSE, PBU, and OBU demonstrated significant differences between the techniques (p < 0.05), with a higher bond strength for CSE in AA and CVM modalities, for PBU in AA modality, and for OBU in AA and PA modalities. No significant differences were found between the techniques used among the OBFL (p > 0.05). In addition, only the CVM technique demonstrated significant differences between the tested materials after 6 months. CV and CVM showed a decreased value after aging for CSE and PBU, respectively. However, all the modalities decreased for OBU and OBFL after aging. All the adhesives showed marked resin infiltration into dentinal tubules in AA among all the modalities tested. Both universal adhesive systems (OBU and PBU) demonstrated statistically lower CA when compared to the other systems (CSE and OBFL) (p < 0.05) when applied in the PA mode. Concerning the AA mode, only CSE and OBFL were tested. The AA demonstrated lower CA values compared to the same adhesives in PA (p < 0.05). It could be concluded that the bond strength could be influenced by both materials and application techniques. It seems that the AA technique could be recommended as a gold standard for the application of an adhesive system to dentin. Plus, the CV and CVM modalities after 6 months of aging were considered stable for PBU and CSE, respectively. Consequently, the performance of these adhesive systems might vary when applied to other modalities. Future studies are needed to test this hypothesis.

Abstract
Diverse types of dental adhesives exhibit different cytotoxic outcomes on cells in vitro. Currently, no standard adhesive application technique has so far been decisive for clinicians for better durability of resin-dentin bonds of adhesive systems. The purpose of this study was to systematically review the literature to evaluate the bonding performance of adhesive systems to dentin by using different application modalities. The systematic research strategy was conducted by two reviewers among multiple databases: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and Scielo. In vitro studies reporting the effects of additional steps for the application of adhesive systems on the bond strength to dentin were selected. Meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager Software version 5.3.5 using the random effects model. The methodological quality of each in vitro study was assessed according to the parameters of a previous systematic review. The electronic research through different databases generated a total of 8318 references. After the examination of titles and abstracts, a total of 106 potentially relevant studies accessed the full-text evaluation phase. After full-text examination, 78 publications were included for the qualitative analysis, and 68 studies were included in the meta-analysis. Regarding the etch-and-rinse adhesive systems, the application modalities that improved the overall bond strength were the application of a hydrophobic resin layer (p = 0.005), an extended application time (p < 0.001), an application assisted by an electric current (p < 0.001), a double-layer application (p = 0.05), the agitation technique (p = 0.02), and the active application of the adhesive (p < 0.001). For self-etch adhesive systems, the techniques that improved the overall bond strength were the application of a hydrophobic resin layer (p < 0.001), an extended application time (p = 0.001), an application assisted by an electric current (p < 0.001), a double-layer application (p < 0.001), the agitation technique (p = 0.01), and the active application of the adhesive (p < 0.001). The in vitro evidence suggests that the application of adhesive systems using alternative techniques or additional strategies may be beneficial for improving their bond strength to dentin. The application modalities that favored the overall bond strength to dentin were an extended application time, a double-layer application, an application assisted by an electric current, the active application of the adhesive, and the application of a hydrophobic resin layer. Worth mentioning is that some techniques are intended to increase the degree of the conversion of the materials, and therefore, improvements in the biocompatibility of the materials can be expected.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the influence of the sonic device on the clinical performance of one-step self-etch adhesive systems in non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) after 18 months. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty patients participated in this study. Eighty restorations were assigned to two groups (n = 40): Sonic application and Manual application. After the adhesive application (iBond Self-Etch, Kulzer, Hanau, Germany), NCCLs were restored using composite resin (Charisma, Kulzer, Hanau, Germany). The restorations were evaluated at baseline and after 18 months both according to the Word Dental Federation (FDI) and the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria. Friedman repeated measures analysis of variance by rank and Wilcoxon test for significance in each pair were applied (α = 0.05). RESULTS After 18 months, 38 patients were evaluated. Twenty-three restorations were lost (19 for manual vs. 4 for sonic application). The retention rates (95% confidence interval) were 50% (CI 34.8%-65.1%) for manual application and 84.2% (CI 69.6%-92.6%) for sonic application (p < 0.05). Twelve restorations showed marginal staining (nine for manual vs. three for sonic application; FDI, p < 0.05) and nine some marginal discrepancy (seven for manual vs. two for sonic application; FDI, p < 0.05). No restorations showed postoperative sensitivity and caries recurrence at the time. CONCLUSION The sonic application increases the retention rate of iBond Self-Etch after 18 months of clinical evaluation in NCCLs. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The application of a simplified self-etch adhesive (iBond Self-Etch) associated to a sonic device seems to be an alternative to improve the clinical behavior in NCCLs.

Abstract
Objectives This study evaluated the effects of different smear layer preparations on the dentin permeability and microtensile bond strength (µTBS) of 2 self-etching adhesives (Clearfil SE Bond [CSE] and Clearfil Tri-S Bond Universal [CTS]) under dynamic pulpal pressure. Materials and Methods Human third molars were cut into crown segments. The dentin surfaces were prepared using 4 armamentaria: 600-grit SiC paper, coarse diamond burs, superfine diamond burs, and carbide burs. The pulp chamber of each crown segment was connected to a dynamic intra-pulpal pressure simulation apparatus, and the permeability test was done under a pressure of 15 cmH2O. The relative permeability (%P) was evaluated on the smear layer-covered and bonded dentin surfaces. The teeth were bonded to either of the adhesives under pulpal pressure simulation, and cut into sticks after 24 hours water storage for the µTBS test. The resin-dentin interface and nanoleakage observations were performed using a scanning electron microscope. Statistical comparisons were done using analysis of variance and post hoc tests. Results Only the method of surface preparation had a significant effect on permeability (p < 0.05). The smear layers created by the carbide and superfine diamond burs yielded the lowest permeability. CSE demonstrated a higher µTBS, with these values in the superfine diamond and carbide bur groups being the highest. Microscopic evaluation of the resin-dentin interface revealed nanoleakage in the coarse diamond bur and SiC paper groups for both adhesives. Conclusions Superfine diamond and carbide burs can be recommended for dentin preparation with the use of 2-step CSE.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the effect of different pre-treatments on the long-term bond strength of fiberglass posts luted either with dual-curing self-etch adhesives and core build-up composites or with a self-adhesive resin (SAR) cement. MATERIALS AND METHODS In total, 180 human root-filled teeth received post-space preparations and three different dentin pre-treatments (PTs): PT1, ethanol (99%); PT2, ethanol-tertiary-butanol-water-solution (AH Plus Cleaner, Dentsply Sirona; York, USA); and PT3, distilled water (control). Five luting systems were used: FU, Futurabond U (Voco; Cuxhaven, Germany); CL, Clearfil DC Bond (Kuraray Noritake; Okayama, Japan); GR, Gradia Core SE Bond (GC Europe NV; Leuven, Belgium); LU, LuxaBond Universal (DMG; Hamburg, Germany); and RX, RelyX Unicem 2 (3M; Minnesota, USA). Roots were cut into six slices (1 mm thick). From each root canal region, three slices were submitted to immediate and three to post-storage push-out testing. The latter were subjected to thermocycling (5-55°C, 6.000 cycles) and stored for six months in saline solution (0.9%, 37°C). Data were analysed using repeated measures ANOVA and chi-square tests (MV±SD). RESULTS Bond strength was significantly affected by material (p<0.0005), pre-treatment (p=0.016), and storage (p<0.0005; repeated-measures ANOVA). LU (18.8±8.1MPa) revealed significantly higher bond strength than RX (16.08±6.4MPa), GR (15.1±4.6MPa), CL (13.95±5.2MPa), and FU (13.7±6.3MPa). PT1 (16.5±6.9MPa) revealed significantly higher bond strength than PT3 (14.5±5.7MPa). CONCLUSIONS A universal adhesive in self-etch mode combined with a core build-up material revealed higher bond strength than a SAR cement, both interacted positively with Ethanol pre-treatment. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT Ethanol (99%) rinsing can be recommended as part of post and core pre-treatment for the investigated luting systems.

Abstract
The biomimetic remineralization of collagen fibrils has increased interest in restoring the demineralized dentine generated by dental caries. Carboxyl-terminated polyamidoamine dendrimers (PAMAM-COOH), hyperbranched polymeric macromolecules, can act as non-collagenous proteins to induce biomimetic remineralization on a dentine organic matrix. However, in vivo remineralization is an extremely time-consuming process; before complete remineralization, demineralized dentine collagen fibrils are susceptible to degradation by host-derived matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). Therefore, we examined the effect of fourth-generation PAMAM-COOH (G4-PAMAM-COOH) on the collagenolytic activities of endogenous MMPs, the interaction between G4-PAMAM-COOH and demineralized dentine collagen and the influence of G4-PAMAM-COOH pre-treatment on resin-dentine bonding. G4-PAMAN-COOH not only inhibited exogenous soluble rhMMP9 but also hampered the proteolytic activities of dentine collagen-bound MMPs. Cooperated with the results of G4-PAMAM-COOH absorption and desorption, FTIR spectroscopy provided evidence for the exclusive electrostatic interaction rather than hydrogen or covalent bonding between G4-PAMAM-COOH and dentine collagen. Furthermore, G4-PAMAM-COOH pre-treatment showed no damage to resin-dentine bonding because it did not significantly decrease the elastic modulus of the demineralized dentine, degree of conversion, penetration of the adhesive into the dentinal tubules or ultimate tensile strength. Thus, G4-PAMAM-COOH can effectively inactivate MMPs, retard the enzymolysis of collagen by MMPs and scarcely influence the application of resin-dentine bonding.

Abstract
SUMMARY
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of different adhesive application methods and etching modes on the dentin bond durability of universal adhesives under thermal cycling (TC). All-Bond Universal (Bisco), Adhese Universal (Ivoclar Vivadent), and Scotchbond Universal (3M ESPE) were used as adhesives. In total, 600 bovine teeth with exposed dentin were divided into 12 groups according to the type of adhesive and subjected to the following bonding procedures: 1) etch-and-rinse mode with active application; 2) etch-and-rinse mode with inactive application; 3) self-etch mode with active application; and 4) self-etch mode with inactive application. Bonded specimens were stored in distilled water at 37°C for 24 hours and then subjected to 5000, 10,000, 30,000, or 50,000 TC between 5°C and 55°C before shear bond strength (SBS) testing, creating a division into a total of five different storage conditions. Baseline specimens were stored in distilled water at 37°C for 24 hours. The SBS test was performed at a cross-head speed of 1.0 mm/min. Three-way analysis of variance revealed that all the factors of application mode, adhesive, and thermal cycle period significantly influenced the SBS values (p<0.001), regardless of the etching mode. In the baseline groups, all of the tested adhesives with active application had higher SBS values than those with inactive application, regardless of etching mode. In the TC groups, significantly lower SBS values were observed at 50,000 TC with inactive application compared to those with active application, regardless of the etching mode. From the scanning electron microscopy observation of demineralized and deproteinized resin/dentin interfaces, dense resin tags longer than 50 μm were observed in the etch-and-rinse with active application group. On the other hand, the resin tags in self-etch mode were sparse, thin, and much shorter than those in etch-and-rinse mode. Comparing the penetration status of the resin tags with active and inactive application in self-etch mode, the resin tag penetration with inactive application was much lower than that with active application. Active application is effective in enhancing the dentin bond durability of universal adhesives. When using universal adhesives with different etching modes, practitioners should select the optimal etching mode and appropriate application method in accordance with the cavity conditions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the use of α-hydroxy glycolic acid (GA) as a surface pretreatment for dental restorative applications. The etching pattern of GA pretreatment of dental hard tissues was assessed by surface microhardness and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effectiveness of GA surface etching on the enamel and dentin resin bond strengths was assessed using two etchant application modes (rubbing and no rubbing) and three adhesive systems (Single Bond [SB], One Step Plus [OSP], and Scotchbond Universal [SBU]). METHODS Knoop microhardness measurements were carried out on polished enamel and dentin surfaces before and after treatment with 35% GA, 35% phosphoric acid (PA), or distilled water (control group) for 30 seconds. The microtensile bond strength test was carried out on enamel and dentin. Ultrastructural analysis of the surface and interfacial interaction was qualitatively accomplished using SEM. RESULTS Etching with either PA or GA significantly decreased the enamel microhardness, with GA being significantly less aggressive than PA ( p<0.001), while both acids showed similar decreases in dentin microhardness ( p=0.810). SEM revealed similar etching patterns of GA and PA, while apparently a thinner hybrid layer was observed for GA groups. In dentin, the bond strengths were statistically similar between PA and GA groups, regardless of the etchant application mode ( p>0.05). However, rubbing of GA enhanced the bond strength to enamel. PA and GA significantly increased the SBU bond strength to enamel when compared to SB and OSP ( p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS GA effectively etched enamel and dentin surfaces, resulting in bond strength values similar to those associated with traditional PA. GA is a suitable enamel and dentin surface etchant for adhesive restorative procedures.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of proanthocyanidin (PA) and chlorhexidine (CHX) on the bond strength (BS), failure pattern, and resin-dentin interface morphology of the endodontic sealers EndoREZ and AH Plus after 24 h and 6 months of water storage. A total of 120 prepared bovine roots were divided into six groups: AH Plus, CHX+AH Plus, PA+AH Plus, EndoREZ, CHX+EndoREZ, and PA+EndoREZ. Dentin was treated for 1 or 5 min with 2% CHX or 15% PA, respectively. Roots were filled and stored in water for 24 h or 6 months (n = 10). Root slices were subjected to push-out test and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Data were compared using two-way ANOVA and student's t-test (α = 5%). BS decreased over time for AH Plus and untreated EndoREZ (p < 0.05). At 24 h, AH Plus had higher BS than EndoREZ (p < 0.001), with no differences among treatments for both sealers (p > 0.05). At 6 months, EndoREZ had higher BS values for CHX and PA than control (p < 0.05). AH Plus had higher BS than EndoREZ (p < 0.001), while with CHX or PA, similar BS was observed in both sealers (p > 0.05). Cohesive and mixed failures were observed in all groups. SEM revealed sealer tags in the root dentin. In conclusion, BS decreased with time and AH Plus had higher BS than EndoREZ in untreated dentin; however, CHX or PA enhanced long-term BS of EndoREZ. Overall, dentin treatment affected failure pattern and resin-dentin interface morphology, particularly for EndoREZ.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the clinical effectiveness of two methods of application of a mild one-step self-etch adhesive and composite resin as compared with a resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) control restoration in noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs). METHODS: A total of 294 restorations were placed in 56 patients, 98 in each one of the following groups: 1) G-Bond active application combined with Solare-X composite resin (A-1SEA), 2) G-Bond passive application combined with Solare-X composite resin (P-1SEA), and 3) GC II LC RMGIC. The restorations were evaluated at baseline and after six, 12, and 18 months according to the FDI criteria for fractures/retention, marginal adaptation, marginal staining, postoperative sensitivity, and secondary caries. Cumulative failure rates were calculated for each criterion at each recall period. The effect of adhesive, method of application, and recall period were assessed. The Kruskal-Wallis test for intergroup comparison and Friedman and Wilcoxon signed ranks tests for intragroup comparison were used for each criterion ( α=0.05). RESULTS: The retention rates at 18 months were 93.26% for the A-1SEA group, 86.21% for the P-1SEA group, and 90.91% for the RMGIC group. The active application improved the retention rates compared with the passive application of mild one-step self-etch adhesive; however, no statistically significant difference was observed between the groups. Marginal staining was observed in 13 restorations (1 in A-1SEA, 4 in P-1SEA, and 8 in RMGIC) with no significant difference between the groups. The RMGIC group showed a significant increase in marginal staining at 12 and 18 months from the baseline. There was no significant difference between the groups for marginal adaptation, secondary caries, or postoperative sensitivity. CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of the study, we can conclude that mild one-step self-etch adhesive followed by a resin composite restoration can be an alternative to RMGIC with similar retention and improved esthetics in restoration of NCCLs. Agitation could possibly benefit the clinical performance of mild one-step self-etch adhesives, but this study did not confirm that the observed benefit was statistically significant.

Abstract
PURPOSE Universal adhesives are new systems that can be used in etch-and-rinse (ER) and self-etch (SE) modes. This in vitro study evaluated the bonding performance of a universal adhesive in ER mode and SE mode with two irrigants for luting fiber posts in the root canal. MATERIALS AND METHODS After separation of the roots from the crowns of 56 maxillary central incisors and endodontic treatment, 10-mm post space was prepared. The roots were divided into seven groups according to irrigant/adhesive protocol used for cementation of posts: 1) sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) irrigant + acid etching + One-Step Plus, 2) NaOCl + Clearfil SE Bond (CSE) and 3) EDTA + CSE as controls; 4) NaOCl + All-Bond Universal (AB) in ER mode, 5) NaOCl + AB in SE mode, 6) EDTA + AB in SE mode, 7) distilled water + AB in SE mode. Posts were luted using Duo-link. The bonded roots were sectioned into microslices. After push-out bond strength (PBS) testing, data in MPa were analyzed with two-way ANOVA and Tukey test (α = 0.05). RESULTS PBS was significantly affected by irrigation/adhesive protocol and root region (P<0.05), with no significant interaction of these factors. PBS of ABU in ER mode with NaOCl and in SE mode with NaOCl or EDTA was comparable to that in the respective controls. The highest and lowest PBSs were recorded for ABU in the SE mode with EDTA (15.38 ± 4) and NaOCl (10.17 ± 3.5), respectively. PBS of AB in ER and SE modes was similar when distilled water was used in the SE mode. CONCLUSION Adhesive performance of AB in the ER mode was comparable to or different from the SE mode, depending on the irrigant used to prepare post space in SE approach. AB could behave as a reliable bonding for post cementation.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of dentin surface treatments on the retention rate of resin composite restorations in non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs). Seven randomized clinical trials were included in this review. Data regarding retention rate, type of surface treatment, and the main characteristics of studies were analyzed. Two reviewers performed a literature search up to December 2016 in eight databases: PubMed (Medline), Lilacs, Ibecs, Web of Science, BBO, Scopus, Scielo and The Cochrane Library. Only clinical trials evaluating dentin surface treatments in resin composite restoration in NCCLs were included. Noncontrolled clinical trials, reviews, editorial letters, case reports, case series and studies published in a language other than English, Portuguese, or Spanish were not included. The included studies evaluated different surface treatments, such as using an adhesive system with a frictional technique, drying the dentin, and removing sclerotic dentin by using a bur and applying EDTA before primer use. The analysis considering the mechanical removal of dentin surface with a bur and the application of an adhesive system in a frictional mode showed these treatments improved retention rates of the resin composite restorations in NCCLs ( p<0.05). There is evidence in the literature suggesting that the mechanical removal of dentin surface with a bur and the application of an adhesive system in a frictional mode could improve the retention rates of resin composite restorations in NCCLs. However, the studies showed high heterogeneity, and additional clinical trials are needed to determine the best dentin treatment option in NCCLs.

Abstract
SUMMARY
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of water storage on bond strength of multimode adhesive systems to artificially induced caries-affected dentin. One hundred twelve sound bovine incisors were randomly assigned to 16 groups (n=7) according to the dentin condition (sound; SND, artificially induced caries-affected dentin; CAD, cariogenic challenge by pH cycling for 14 days); the adhesive system (SU, Scotchbond Universal Adhesive; AB, All-Bond Universal; PB, Prime & Bond Elect; SB, Adper Single Bond 2; and CS, Clearfil SE Bond), and the etching strategy (etch-and-rinse and self-etch). All adhesive systems were applied under manufacturer's instructions to flat dentin surfaces, and a composite block was built up on each dentin surface. After 24 hours of water storage, the specimens were sectioned into stick-shaped specimens (0.8 mm2) and submitted to a microtensile test immediately (24 hours) or after six months of water storage. Bond strength data (MPa) were analyzed using three-way repeated-measures analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey test (α=5%), considering each substrate separately (SND and CAD). The etching strategy did not influence the bond strength of multimode adhesives, irrespective of the dentin condition. Water storage only reduced significantly the bond strength to CAD. The degradation of bond strength due to water storage was more pronounced in CAD, regardless of the etching strategy.

Abstract
This study investigated the effect of rubbing force magnitude on dentin bond strengths of multi-mode adhesives applied in self-etch mode. Seventy-two extracted human molar teeth were used. Two different universal adhesives Single Bond Universal (SB) and Clearfil Universal (CL) were applied onto dentin surfaces in three different modes: without rubbing (NR), rubbing with 40 gf (gram-force) (40) or 80 gf (80) load. Teeth were restored with a resin composite. Half of the specimens were subject to thermal aging (10,000 cycles). Microtensile bond strength was measured and data were statistically analyzed with two-way analysis of variance and Tukey's test (α=0.05). Baseline bond strength values for CL adhesive were improved by rubbing (40 and 80 gf) as compared to no rubbing (p<0.05). Rubbing did not significantly improve bond strength values for SB, regardless of aging (p>0.05). Rubbing improves bonding performance of some universal adhesives to dentin when applied in self-etch mode.

Objectives: This study investigated whether increasing the concentration of acidic monomers in one-step adhesives would allow reducing their application time without interfering with the bonding ability to primary enamel and dentin. Material and methods: Experimental one-step self-etch adhesives were formulated with 5 wt% (AD5), 20 wt% (AD20), or 35 wt% (AD35) acidic monomer. The adhesives were applied using rubbing motion for 5, 10, or 20 s. Bond strengths to primary enamel and dentin were tested under shear stress. A commercial etch-and-rinse adhesive (Single Bond 2; 3M ESPE) served as reference. Scanning electron microscopy was used to observe the morphology of bonded interfaces. Data were analysed at p<0.05. Results: In enamel, AD35 had higher bond strength when rubbed for at least 10 s, while application for 5 s generated lower bond strength. In dentin, increased acidic monomer improved bonding only for 20 s rubbing time. The etch-and-rinse adhesive yielded higher bond strength to enamel and similar bonding to dentin as compared with the self-etch adhesives. The adhesive layer was thicker and more irregular for the etch-and-rinse material, with no appreciable differences among the self-etch systems. Conclusion: Overall, increasing the acidic monomer concentration only led to an increase in bond strength to enamel when the rubbing time was at least 10 s. In dentin, despite the increase in bond strength with longer rubbing times, the results favoured the experimental adhesives compared to the conventional adhesive. Reduced rubbing time of self-etch adhesives should be avoided in the clinical setup.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to assess the resin-dentin interfacial morphology created by two universal adhesives using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). MATERIALS AND METHODS The occlusal surfaces of ten (n = 5) molars were reduced to expose a flat surface of dentin. Two universal adhesives, Scotchbond Universal Adhesive and Tetric N-Bond Universal, were independently applied to air-dried dentin. Light-cured resin-based composite restorative materials were used to incrementally build a composite "buildup." The specimen was sectioned mesiodistally to expose the resin-dentin interface. The inner surfaces of the specimens were polished. Samples were immersed in hydrochloric acid and then rinsed using distilled water. This was followed by immersion of the samples in 1% sodium hypochlorite solution. Then, samples were thoroughly rinsing with distilled water. Dehydration of samples was performed using ascending concentration of ethyl alcohol. Prepared samples were observed SEM at magnifications ×1500 and x4000. RESULTS Both universal adhesives could penetrate dentin-forming well-defined resin tags, lateral branches as well as a uniform hybrid layer. CONCLUSIONS Two tested universal adhesives applied in self-etch mode can infiltrate into dentin-producing high-quality interfacial morphology. Similar interfacial morphology may be due to the similarity in composition and application mode.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To test the influence of a hydrophobic resin coating (HC) on the immediate (24h) and 6-month (6m) microtensile dentin bond strengths (μTBS) and nanoleakage (NL) of three universal adhesives applied in self-etch (SE) or in etch-and-rinse (ER) mode. METHODS Sixty caries-free extracted third molars were assigned to 12 experimental groups resulting from the combination of the factors "adhesive system" (Scotchbond Universal Adhesive [SBU], 3M ESPE; All-Bond Universal [ABU], Bisco Inc.; and G-Bond Plus [GBP], GC Corporation); "adhesive strategy" (SE or ER); "hydrophobic resin coating" [HC] (with or without Heliobond, Ivoclar Vivadent); and "storage time" (24h or 6m). Specimens were prepared for μTBS testing - (24h) half of the beams were immediately tested under tension; and (6m) the other half was stored in distilled water (37°C) for 6m prior to testing. For each tooth, two beams were randomly selected for NL evaluation for both evaluation times. Data were analyzed for each adhesive system using three-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test (α=0.05). RESULTS μTBS: (24h): In SE mode, HC resulted in statistically greater mean μTBS for all adhesives. (6m): When HC was not used the mean μTBS for SBU/ER, ABU/ER, GBP/ER and SBU/SE decreased significantly. NL: (24h): SBU/ER, ABU/ER and GBP/SE resulted in a significant reduction in NL when HC was applied. (6m): No significant reduction was observed for SBU/ER or for SBU/SE regardless of the use of HC. SIGNIFICANCE The application of a hydrophobic resin coating improved the 24h and the 6m performances of all three adhesives systems in SE mode.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the immediate and 6-month resin-dentin bond strength (μTBS) and nanoleakage (NL) of universal adhesives that contain or do not contain methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP) and are used in the etch-and-rinse and self-etch strategies. METHODS AND MATERIALS Forty caries-free extracted third molars were divided into eight groups for μTBS (n=5). The groups were bonded with the Clearfil SE Bond (CSE) and Adper Single Bond 2 (SB) as controls; Peak Universal, self-etch (PkSe) and etch-and rinse (PkEr); Scotchbond Universal Adhesive, self-etch (ScSe) and etch-and-rinse (ScEr); and All Bond Universal, self-etch (AlSe) and etch-and-rinse (AlEr). After composite restorations, specimens were longitudinally sectioned to obtain resin-dentin bonded sticks (0.8 mm(2)). The μTBS of the specimens was tested immediately (IM) or after 6 months of water storage (6M) at 0.5 mm/min. Some sticks at each storage period were immersed in silver nitrate and photo developed, and the NL was evaluated with scanning electron microscopy. Data were analyzed with two-way repeated-measures analysis of variance and Tukey test (α=0.05). RESULTS At the IM period, PkSe and PkEr showed μTBS similar to the control adhesives (p>0.05) but increased NL pattern and lower μTBS after 6M (p<0.05). ScSe and ScEr showed intermediary μTBS values at the IM period but remained stable after 6 months (p>0.05). AlSe showed the lowest μTBS (p<0.05), but μTBS and NL remained stable after 6M (p>0.05). AlEr showed higher IM μTBS but showed higher degradation after 6M (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Universal adhesives that contain MDP showed higher and more stable μTBS with reduced NL at the interfaces after 6 months of water storage.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of storage temperature and flask agitation on the water sorption (WS) and solubility (SL) of simplified adhesive systems. Seventy-two disc-shaped specimens were prepared according to the adhesive system (water/ethanol-based: Adper Single Bond 2; and water-based: One Coat Bond SL) and experimental conditions tested (mechanical agitation and storage temperature). Statistical analysis (3-way ANOVA, alpha=5%) found significantly greater WS and SL means for the water/ethanol-based system when compared to the water-based. Irrespective of factors studied, significant differences in WS and SL were noted between cold and room temperatures, with greater values been obtained at 1°C, and lower ones at 20°C. Agitation provided increased WS for both materials at all temperatures, but did not affect their SL. The mechanical agitation of the flask may negatively affect the dynamics of diffusion of simplified adhesive systems, even at extremely cold or warm temperatures.

Abstract
SUMMARY
Purpose
The aim of this in vitro study was 1) to analyze the influence of a double-layer application technique of four one-step self-etch adhesive systems on dentin and 2) to determine its effect on the stability of the adhesive interfaces stored under different conditions.
Materials and Methods
Four different one-step self-etch adhesives were selected for the study (iBondSE, Clearfil S3 Bond, XenoV+, and Scotchbond Universal). Adhesives were applied according to manufacturers' instructions or with a double-layer application technique (without light curing of the first layer). After bonding, resin-dentin specimens were sectioned for microtensile bond strength testing in accordance with the nontrimming technique and divided into 3 subgroups of storage: a) 24 hours (immediate bond strength, T0), b) six months (T6) in artificial saliva at 37°C, or c) five hours in 10 % NaOCl at room temperature. After storage, specimens were stressed to failure. Fracture mode was assessed under a light microscope.
Results
At T0, iBond SE showed a significant increase in microtensile bond strength when the double-application technique was applied. All adhesive systems showed reduced bond strengths after six months of storage in artificial saliva and after storage in 10% NaOCl for five hours; however at T6, iBond SE, Clearfil S3 Bond, and XenoV+ showed significantly higher microtensile bond strength results for the double-application technique compared with the single-application technique. Scotchbond Universal showed no difference between single- or double-application, irrespective of the storage conditions.
Conclusion
The results of this study show that improvements in bond strength of one-step self-etch adhesives by using the double-application technique are adhesive dependent.

Abstract
SUMMARY
Objectives
To evaluate the clinical performance of two one-step self-etch adhesives in noncarious cervical lesions (NCCL) under active or passive application mode.
Methods
Thirty-one patients with four NCCL were enrolled in this study. One hundred and twenty-four restorations were placed according to one of the following conditions: 1) Adper Prompt L-Pop (AP), active application (APA); 2) AP, passive application (APP); 3) Xeno III (XE), active application (XEA), or 4) XE, passive application (XEP). The restorations were evaluated by the FDI World Dental Federation criteria at baseline and after six, 12, and 24 months of clinical service. The effects of adhesive, mode of application, and recall period were assessed via mixed generalized linear model (α=0.05).
Results
The adhesive AP and the passive application mode showed significantly higher marginal staining than did XE and active application, respectively (p<0.05). With regard to the retention rates, the active application mode yielded higher retention rates at the 24-month recall compared to the passive application, regardless of the material. The individual retention rates (95% confidence interval) of both adhesives in the active application mode were the same, 96.8% (83.8-99.4%), while in the passive application rates were 87.1% (71.2-94.9%) and 80.7% (63.7-90.8%) for XE and AP, respectively.
Conclusions
The active application improved the retention rates of both adhesives after 24 months and minimized the marginal staining at enamel margins.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the influence of light-curing unit tip distance on the microtensile bond strength (μTBS) and nanoleakage of self-etching adhesives to enamel and dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS Flat buccal surfaces were prepared on 198 bovine incisors. The teeth were randomly assigned into nine groups for μTBS (n = 8) and nanoleakage (n = 3) testing according to the adhesive system (Clearfil Protect Bond, Clearfil Tri-S Bond or One Up Bond F Plus) and distance from the light-curing tip (0, 3 or 6 mm). The bonded samples were tested in tension (0.5 mm/min) and nanoleakage was analyzed using SEM. RESULTS Clearfil Protect Bond exhibited the highest tensile strength on both enamel and dentin. Leakage was higher in samples exposed at a distance of 6 mm on enamel and 0 mm on dentin. One Up Bond F Plus experienced the greatest amount of nanoleakage on both substrates. CONCLUSIONS Light-curing unit distance did not influence the μTBS of the adhesives, but nanoleakage increased on enamel samples when photoactivation occurred at a distance of 6 mm.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of replacing a component of the self-etch adhesive Adper Scotchbond SE (liquid A + liquid B) by 2% chlorhexidine (CHX) on bond strength to dentin after 1 day, 3 months or 6 months of water storage. Eight human teeth were sectioned to expose a flat dentin surface and were then randomly assigned to 2 groups. In the control group, the dentin surfaces were treated with the adhesive according to the manufacturer's instructions. In the experimental group, liquid A was replaced by 2% CHX. Next, a 6-mm-high resin composite block was incrementally built on the bonded surfaces. The restored teeth were then sectioned to produce stick-shaped specimens (cross-sectional area - 0.8 mm2). The microtensile bond strength (µTBS) was recorded, and the failure modes were assessed. Data were analyzed by two-way repeated measures ANOVA (α=0.05). Four additional teeth were processed in order to conduct a micromorphological analysis of the resin-dentin interface. The µTBS values did not significantly decrease after water storage in either the control or the experimental group, whose values did not differ significantly irrespective of storage time. The morphological aspect of the bonding interface appears not to have been affected by CHX. A higher incidence of cohesive failures within the adhesive and mixed failures (cohesive within adhesive and resin composite) was observed for both groups. It may be concluded that dentin pre-treatment with 2% CHX did not influence significantly the bonding performance of the evaluated adhesive.

Abstract
AIM The goal of this study was to evaluate nanoleakage within the hybrid layer yielded by etch-and-rinse and self-etch adhesive systems, with different solvents and compositions. MATERIALS AND METHODS Four adhesives were applied onto 20 human dentin disks: group A: Adper Scotchbond 1XT(™) (3M ESPE), group B: One Coat Bond(®) (Coltène Whaledent), group C: AdheSE(®) (Ivoclar Vivadent) and group D: Xeno-V(®) (Dentsply). The samples were immersed in aqueous ammoniacal silver nitrate for 24 hour, prepared and observed under field-emission scanning electron microscopy with backscattered electrons. Microphotographs were scanned and data were processed. The mean value and standard deviation were calculated. Kruskal- Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests were used (p < 0.05). RESULTS All the adhesives showed nanoleakage within the hybrid layer: Adper Scotchbond 1XT(™) (218.5 µm ± 52.6 µm), One Coat Bond(®) (139.6 µm ± 79.0 µm), AdheSE(®) (92.7 µm ± 64.8 µm) and Xeno-V(®) (251.0 µm ± 85.2 µm). AdheSE(®) yielded less nanoleakage than Adper Scotchbond-1XT(™) (p = 0.003) and than Xeno-V(®) (p = 0.007). No other statistically significant differences were detected. CONCLUSION Two-step self-etch adhesive system (AdheSE(®)) might contribute for lower nanoleakage deposition and thus better performance in dentin adhesion. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The two-step self-etch adhesive system showed the lowest nanoleakage deposition compared with the other adhesive systems evaluated, which seems to indicate a better behavior when a restoration is performed in dentin and possibly can lead to a durable adhesion along time.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aims to evaluate the effect of different application modes on the immediate and 6-month resin-dentin bond strength (μTBS) and nanoleakage in the hybrid and adhesive layers. MATERIALS AND METHODS Three 1-step self-etch adhesives (One Coat 7.0 (OC), Clearfil S(3) Bond (CS), and FuturaBond NR (FB)) were applied on a flat superficial dentin surface of 30 human molars under manual mode or sonic vibration at a frequency of 170 Hz (SV). Composite build-ups were constructed incrementally; specimens were sectioned to obtain resin-dentin sticks with cross-sectional area of 0.8 mm(2) and tested in tension (0.5 mm/min) immediately (IM) or after 6 months (6M) of water storage. Two bonded sticks, from each tooth at each storage time, were immersed in a silver nitrate solution, photo-developed, and analyzed under scanning electron microscopy. The amount of nanoleakage was measured using the ImageTool 3.0 software. Data, from each adhesive, were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). RESULTS OC and CS showed higher μTBS and lower nanoleakage in the IM period when applied with SV groups. For FB, no significant difference was observed between the two modes of application. All materials showed lower nanoleakage in the SV groups. Higher nanoleakage was observed after 6M for OC and FB. CONCLUSIONS The sonic application mode at an oscillating frequency of 170 Hz can improve the resin-dentin μTBS, reduce the nanoleakage, and retard the degradation of the resin-dentin μTBS of Clearfil S(3) Bond and One Coat 7.0 adhesives. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Sonic application mode at an oscillating frequency of 170 Hz can be helpful and easy to use in dental practice to guaranty long-lasting restorations.

Abstract
SUMMARY
The incorporation of hydrophilic and acidic resin monomers substantially improved the initial bonding of contemporary etch-and-rinse (ER) and self-etch (SE) adhesives to intrinsically wet dental substrates, providing quite favorable immediate results, regardless of the bonding approach used. However, in the long term, the bonding effectiveness of most simplified ER and SE adhesives drop dramatically. This review examines the fundamental processes that are responsible for the aging mechanisms involved in the degradation of the resin-bonded interfaces and some possible clinical approaches that have been effective in minimizing or even preventing the degradation of the adhesive interfaces produced with simplified adhesives. The incorporation of some of the feasible approaches - described in this review - may improve the quality of the adhesive restorations performed in clinical practice, while manufacturers develop bonding materials that are less susceptible to the aging mechanisms present in the oral environment.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of extended light-curing procedures on the microtensile bond strength (μTBS) of one-step self-etch adhesives (1-SEAs) submitted to simulated pulpal pressure. Coronal deep-dentin specimens were bonded using Clearfil S3 Bond (S3), Adper Easy Bond (EB), or G-Bond Plus (GB) following the manufacturers' recommendations and light-cured for 10 seconds or 40 seconds. The dentin-bonded specimens were stored in distilled water for 24 hours without pulpal pressure (control) or submitted to 20 cm H2O simulated pulpal pressure for 24 hours. The specimens were cut into matchsticks and subjected to μTBS testing. The data were statistically analyzed using the three-way analysis of variance and Tukey's tests (p<0.05). Debonded sticks were investigated through scanning electron microscopy. EB obtained higher bond strengths than GB and S3. However, prolonged light activation (40 seconds) provided higher μTBS for all adhesives when submitted to pulpal pressure. Conversely, pulpal pressure caused a drop in μTBS in EB and S3 when light-cured for 10 seconds. A mixed failure mode was mainly attained for the control groups, whereas the specimens submitted to pulpal pressure failed in the adhesive mode. The μTBS of GB was not affected by pulpal pressure when light-cured for 10 seconds. Adhesive was the most prevalent failure mode, except when light-cured for 40 seconds, which showed predominantly cohesive failure. Extended curing times improved the resistance of 1-SEAs to simulated pulpal pressure.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the influence of application mode on the interfacial morphology and chemistry between dentine and self-etch adhesives with different aggressiveness. METHODS The occlusal one-third of the crown was removed from un-erupted human third molars, followed by abrading with 600 grit SiC under water. Rectangular dentine slabs were prepared by sectioning the tooth specimens perpendicular to the abraded surfaces. The obtained dentine slabs were treated with one of the two one-step self-etch adhesives: Adper Easy Bond (AEB, pH∼2.5) and Adper Prompt L-Pop (APLP, pH∼0.8) with (15s, active application) or without (15s, inactive application) agitation. The dentine slabs were fractured and the exposed adhesive/dentine (A/D) interfaces were examined with micro-Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). RESULTS The interfacial morphology, degree of dentine demineralization (DD) and degree of conversion (DC) of the strong self-etch adhesive APLP showed more significant dependence on the application mode than the mild AEB. APLP exhibited inferior bonding at the A/D interface if applied without agitation, evidenced by debonding from the dentine substrate. The DDs and DCs of the APLP with agitation were higher than those of without agitation in the interface, in contrast to the comparable DD and DC values of two AEB specimen groups with different application modes. Raman spectral analysis revealed the important role of chemical interaction between acid monomers of self-etch adhesives and dentine in the above observations. CONCLUSION The chemical interaction with dentine is especially important for improving the DC of the strong self-etching adhesive at the A/D interface. Agitation could benefit polymerization efficacy of the strong self-etch adhesive through enhancing the chemical interaction with tooth substrate.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to compare the hydrolytic effects induced by simulated pulpal pressure, direct or indirect water exposure within the resin-dentine interfaces created with three "simplified" resin bonding systems (RBSs). METHODS A two-step/self-etching (CSE: Clearfil SE Bond), one-step/self-etching (S3: Clearfil S3) and etch-and-rinse/self-priming (SB: Single-bond 2) adhesives were applied onto dentine and submitted to three different prolonged (6 or 12 months) ageing strategies: (i) Simulated Pulpal Pressure (SPP); (ii) Indirect Water Exposure (IWE: intact bonded-teeth); (iii) Direct Water Exposure (DWE: resin-dentine sticks). Control and aged specimens were submitted to microtensile bond strength (μTBS) and nanoleakage evaluation. Water sorption (WS) survey was also performed on resin disks. Results were analysed with two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (p < 0.05). RESULTS The μTBS of CS3 and SB dropped significantly (p < 0.05) after 6 months of SPP and DWE. CSE showed a significant μTBS reduction only after 12 months of DWE (p = 0.038). IWE promoted no statistical change in μTBS (p > 0.05) and no evident change in nanoleakage. Conversely, SPP induced a clear formation of "water-trees" in CS3 and SB. WS outcomes were CS3 > SB = CSE. CONCLUSION The hydrolytic degradation of resin-dentine interfaces depend upon the type of the in vitro ageing strategy employed in the experimental design. Direct water exposure remains the quickest method to age the resin-dentine bonds. However, the use of SPP may better simulate the in vivo scenario. However, the application of a separate hydrophobic solvent-free adhesive layer may reduce the hydrolytic degradation and increase the longevity of resin-dentine interfaces created with simplified adhesives.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effect of the application method on the immediate and 3-year resin-dentine bond strength (μTBS) and nanoleakage (NL) for 3 one-step self-etch adhesives (Adper Prompt L-Pop; Clearfil S(3) Bond and Xeno III). METHODS The occlusal enamel of 42 human molars were removed to expose a flat dentine surface. The adhesives were applied under inactive or active application. After light-curing (600mW/cm(2) for 10s), composite buildups were constructed incrementally and sectioned to obtain bonded sticks (0.8mm(2)) to be tested in tension immediately or after 3 years of water storage of water storage. For NL, 2 bonded sticks from each tooth at each time were coated with nail varnish, placed in silver nitrate and polished down with SiC paper. The μTBS data was submitted to a two-way repetead mesures ANOVA and Tukey's test for each adhesive (α=0.05). RESULTS The active application showed higher immediate and 3-year μTBS than the inactive application (p<0.05). An increase in the silver nitrate deposition was seen for all conditions after 3 years; however this was more pronounced for all materials under inactive application (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS The active application improves the immediate bonding performance of the adhesive systems. Reductions of the bond strength were observed for all materials after 3 years, however reduced degradation rate was observed when the materials are applied actively in dentine.

Abstract
Continuous etching of aggressive all-in-one adhesives occurs in wet dentin tubules after polymerization of the adhesives. This study challenged the hypothesis that unpolymerized acidic monomers from an aggressive all-in-one self-etching adhesive continue to etch beyond dentin hybrid layers. Dentin surfaces bonded with Adper Prompt L-Pop were sectioned into 0.3-mm-thick slabs. Some of the slabs were stored in water (pH 6.8) or glycine buffer (pH 11.1) for six weeks and then examined by CLSM, SEM, and TEM. The rest were immersed in a biomimetic remineralizing medium for up to 4 months. Morphologic analysis indicated no difference in demineralization thickness between the two 6-week storage groups. However, increased permeability and loss of integrity occurred along the base of the hybrid layers in the glycine buffer group, but not in the water storage group. These findings were also confirmed by the results of biomimetic remineralization along the bases of those hybrid layers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The goal of this paper is to undertake a literature search collecting all dentin bond strength data obtained for six adhesives with four tests (shear, microshear, tensile and microtensile) and to critically analyze the results with respect to average bond strength, coefficient of variation, mode of failure and product ranking. METHOD A PubMed search was carried out for the years between 1998 and 2009 identifying publications on bond strength measurements of resin composite to dentin using four tests: shear, tensile, microshear and microtensile. The six adhesive resins were selected covering three step systems (OptiBond FL, Scotch Bond Multi-Purpose Plus), two-step (Prime & Bond NT, Single Bond, Clearfil SE Bond) and one step (Adper Prompt L Pop). RESULTS Pooling results from 147 references showed an ongoing high scatter in the bond strength data regardless which adhesive and which bond test was used. Coefficients of variation remained high (20-50%) even with the microbond test. The reported modes of failure for all tests still included high number of cohesive failures. The ranking seemed to be dependant on the test used. SIGNIFICANCE The scatter in dentin bond strength data remains regardless which test is used confirming Finite Element Analysis predicting non-uniform stress distributions due to a number of geometrical, loading, material properties and specimens preparation variables. This reopens the question whether, an interfacial fracture mechanics approach to analyze the dentin-adhesive bond is not more appropriate for obtaining better agreement among dentin bond related papers.
