Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) monochromatic restorative materials are gaining popularity because of their convenience and efficiency. However, studies that quantitatively analyzed color change associated with thickness and surface roughness are sparse. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to quantitatively evaluate the color of 6 CAD-CAM monochromatic materials of different thickness and surface roughness using the CIELab color system. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 150 12×12-mm square specimens of 6 different CAD-CAM monochromatic materials (VITA Enamic HT [VE], IPS e.max CAD HT [LS], LAVA Ultimate HT [LU], Telio CAD HT [TE], VITA Suprinity HT [VS], and Celtra Duo HT [CD]) in shade A2 and 5 different thicknesses (from 0.5 mm to 2.5 mm, with 0.5-mm increments) were fabricated (n=5). After 3 different surface treatments (polished, roughened by SiC P800-grit, and P300-grit), CIELab color parameters (L*, a* and b*) were measured using a spectrophotometer (VITA Easyshade V), and surface roughness was measured with a profilometer (VK-X200). Color variation was quantified by ΔE00 and 50:50% acceptability and perceptibly thresholds. Data analyses were performed using MANOVA, 2-way ANOVA, post hoc Tukey-Kramer test, and the 1-sample t test (α=.05). RESULTS The L*, a*, and b* of the monochromatic specimens were significantly influenced by material type, thickness, and surface roughness (P<.001). An overall increase in the L* (from 61.90 to 82.2), a* (from -4.22 to 1.16), and b* (from 5.48 to 43.22) of the specimens was observed with increased thickness. The roughened specimens exhibited lower L* and higher a* and b* than the polished ones (P<.001). The use of P300-grit for roughening resulted in greater ΔE00 compared with P800-grit (P<.001). As thickness decreased or surface roughness increased, the ΔE00 increased and exceeded the acceptability and perceptibly thresholds for color difference. CONCLUSIONS Material type, thickness, and surface roughness were major factors affecting the color of CAD-CAM monochromatic materials. Variations in thickness of 0.5 mm or more, as well as roughening treatments, may lead to clinically unacceptable color changes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) materials for prosthetic is gaining popularity in dentistry. However, limited information exists regarding the impact of thickness and roughening treatment on the optical properties of contemporary CAD-CAM restorative materials. This study aimed to quantitatively evaluate the translucency and opalescence of six dental CAD-CAM materials in response to different thicknesses and roughening treatments. METHODS Six dental CAD-CAM materials, lithium disilicate glass-ceramic (IPS e.max CAD, LS), polymer-infiltrated ceramic (VITA Enamic, VE), resin-nano ceramic glass-ceramic (LAVA Ultimate, LU), polymethyl methacrylate (Telio CAD, TE), and two zirconia reinforced lithium silicate (VITA Suprinity, VS, and Celtra Duo, CD), in shade A2 were prepared as 12 × 12mm2 specimens of four thicknesses (0.5mm, 1.0mm, 1.5mm, and 2.0mm) (N = 240, n = 10). After three different treatments (polished, roughened by SiC P800-grit, and SiC P300-grit), the translucency parameter (TP00) and opalescence parameter (OP) were measured with a spectrophotometer (VITA Easyshade V). The surface roughness was analyzed with a shape measurement laser microscope. The data were analyzed using a MANOVA, post hoc Tukey-Kramer test, the t test, and regression analysis (α = .05). RESULTS The TP00 and OP were significantly influenced by material type, thickness and roughening treatment (P < .05). TP00 showed a continues decline with increasing thicknesses, while the variations of OP were material-dependent. TP00 ranged from 37.80 (LS in 0.5mm) to 5.66 (VS in 2.0mm), and OP ranged from 5.66 (LU in 0.5mm) to 9.55 (VS in 0.5mm). The variations in TP00 of all materials between adjacent thicknesses ranged from 2.10 to 15.29, exceeding the acceptable translucency threshold except for LU. Quadratic and logarithmic regression curves exhibited the best fit for TP00 among the materials. Compared to polished specimens, rougher specimens exhibited lower TP00 and higher OP in all materials except for LS (P < 0.05). Roughening with P300-grit decreased TP00 and OP by an average of 2.59 and 0.43 for 0.5mm specimens, and 1.26 and 0.25 for 2.0mm specimens, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Variations in translucency caused by thickness and roughening treatment were perceptible and may be clinically unacceptable. Careful consideration should be given to the selection of CAD-CAM materials based on their distinct optical properties.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Opaque cements can be esthetically unfavorable and alternative translucent materials have been developed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the color interference of a new translucent cement compared with conventional materials, in association with interim restoration with different thickness and shades. METHODS Bis-acryl composite disks were prepared in 2 thicknesses (1.2 mm, 0.6 mm) and 3 shades (A3.5, A2, bleached) to simulate the restorations. Cementation over dentin disks was performed with 1 translucent cement (Provicol QM Aesthetic; VOCO), 2 conventional cements (Provicol; VOCO, Temp-Bond NE; Kerr Dental), and 1 transparent liquid (polyethylene glycol 400). The difference between the color of the specimens cemented with the transparent liquid and that of the specimens cemented with each cement was calculated (ΔEab). The data were analyzed using 3-way analysis of variance and Tukey tests (5%). RESULTS Significant differences were observed for all factors and some interactions (P < .05). For Provicol QM Aesthetic, the shade and thickness did not influence the ΔEab. For Provicol and Temp-Bond NE, the lighter and thinner the specimen, the higher the ΔEab. Only Provicol QM Aesthetic had smaller means than the perceptibility threshold. Temp-Bond NE and Provicol had higher values than the acceptability threshold for some combinations. CONCLUSIONS The highly translucent cement had less color interference than the conventional materials. The thickness and resin shade only affected the results for the opaque cements. The thinner specimens and the lighter shades had higher color interference. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS The use of a more translucent cement can produce a smaller color interference on the esthetic outcome of interim restorations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Define the color of anterior teeth of a selected population and correlate it (by using coverage error [CE] and the frequency of best match) with the final color of all possible enamel-dentine combinations of three different resin composite systems. MATERIALS AND METHODS Color of 636 vital unrestored anterior teeth (central incisors, lateral incisors and canines; n = 212) and disk specimens (12 mm diameter, varying thickness) corresponding to enamel-dentin combinations of all available enamel (0.5 mm and 1.0 mm thickness) and dentin shades (3.0 mm thickness) of Essentia, Enamel Plus HRi and IPS Empress Direct composite systems was measured using a clinical dental spectrophotometer (Spectroshade Micro). CE and frequency of best match for all composite systems were calculated for the measured in-vivo teeth color space. RESULTS Natural in-vivo teeth exhibit higher lightness when compared to enamel-dentin composite combinations, independently of the enamel thickness used. The best (lowest) CE was found for IPS Empress, while the highest values were found for Enamel Plus Hri independently of tooth type and enamel thickness (p < 0.001). The use of 0.5 mm instead of 1.0 mm enamel thickness within enamel-dentin composite combinations resulted in a lower CE for in-vivo tooth color (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The color space defined by all possible enamel-dentin combinations of the studied resin composite systems does not fully match the color range of anterior teeth. All composite systems examined lack combinations with lightness values as high as the population's. IPS Empress Direct composite system represented better the in-vivo teeth color. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The use of 0.5 mm enamel shade thickness is suggested when building layered restorations, as it provided better color coverage than using 1.0 mm thickness.

Abstract
This study was aimed to evaluate the effect of thickness (1, 2, 3, and 4 mm) on the translucency of resin-based composites (RBCs) and glass-ceramics, and compare the influence of the thickness of those materials on the translucency parameter (TP) value. The materials were divided into two groups, eight RBCs in Group 1 and five glass-ceramics in Group 2 and TP, ΔL*, Δa*, and Δb* were compared. Statistically significant differences were present in the 2, 3, and 4 mm in the TP, in the 2 and 4 mm in ΔL*, and in all thicknesses in Δa* and Δb* betweent the two groups. The TP of RBCs and glass-ceramics decreased as thickness increased, especially from 1 mm to 2 mm. The TP values of the RBCs were more significantly decreased as the thickness of the material increased from 2 mm to 4 mm than those of the glass-ceramics.

Abstract
The color-matching ability of single-shade composites Omnichroma (OMN) and Omnichroma Flow (OCF) is ensured by structural color, which arises from monodisperse 260 nm spherical fillers. This study evaluated how filler load influences the color adjustment potential of composite restorations to human teeth of various shades. The performance of composites containing the 260 nm spherical fillers -OMN (79 wt%), OCF (71 wt%), and experimental composites R1 (65 wt%), and R2 (60 wt%)- was compared to two conventional A2-shade composites and a transparent composite. Additionally, the translucency parameter, spectral reflectance, and light transmission properties were assessed. Composites with a lower load of the 260 nm spherical fillers exhibited lower light diffusion and lower reflectance in the yellow-to-red range (580-650 nm), which is characteristic for the structural color of OMN and OCF. The best color adjustment was achieved with OCF, presumably due to its high translucency and uniform spectral reflectance.

Abstract
The recently introduced resin composites with a universal shade are claimed to match any tooth color. In this study, it was examined how composite thickness affects the color adjustment of conventional and universal-shade composites to background dentin. Thirty sound human central incisors of various shade were used, and color differences between their intact labial surfaces, exposed dentin surfaces and composite restorations (thickness 1-3 mm) were evaluated. In addition, the translucency, light transmission characteristics, and spectral reflectance of the composites were measured. The results showed that universal-shade composites outperformed conventional composites of A2 shade in the adjustment of hue and chroma (p<0.05) but not in lightness (p>0.05). The color adjustment potential of all composites significantly decreased as their thickness increased (p<0.05). The effect of thickness on Omnichroma and Omnichroma Flow was less marked, presumably because of their higher translucency (p<0.05) and structural coloration which induces light reflectance in the yellow-to-red range.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the masking ability of a combined application of opaquers and resin composite over discolored backgrounds: A3, A3.5, C2, C3, and C4. The groups were divided according to the opaquer brand, the number of opaquer coats (one or two), and the thickness of the resin composite layer (0.5 or 1.0 mm). The color measurements were made by a reflectance spectrophotometer (SP60, EX-Rite). The color difference between the opaquer + resin composite + background and a reference background was calculated using the CIEDE2000 formula. ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test (α=0.05) were used to analyze the ΔE00 mean values. A bivariate analysis was used to determine the association between dependent and independent variables. The masking ability was rated by the ΔE00 visual thresholds of acceptability and perceptibility (Excellent Match: ΔE00 ≤ 0.8; Acceptable Match: 0.8 < ΔE00 ≤1.8; Moderately Unacceptable Mismatch: 1.8 < ΔE00 ≤ 3.6; Clearly Unacceptable Mismatch: 3.6 < ΔE00 ≤ 5.4; Extremely Unacceptable Mismatch: ΔE00 > 5.4). The mean ΔE00 values ranged from 0.5 to 5.52. Masking ability was affected by the opaquer brand, thickness of the resin composite layer, and background shades. Most of the combinations that achieved either excellent or acceptable masking ability were obtained with combinations composed of one or two coats of opaquer and a 1.0-mm-thick resin composite layer for all backgrounds except C4. Acceptable results were also obtained for combinations with 0.5-mm-thick resin composite over C2, A3, and A3.5 backgrounds.

MATERIAL AND METHODS Four types of dental CAD-CAM monolithic restorative materials in shade A2, lithium disilicate glass-ceramic (IPS e.max CAD), infiltrated ceramic (VITA Enamic), resin-nano ceramic (LAVA Ultimate), and polymethyl methacrylate (Telio CAD), were prepared as 12×12-mm specimens of 10 different thicknesses (from 0.5 to 5.0 mm) (N=200, n=5). After polishing with SiC P1500-grit, CIELab color coordinate parameters of the specimens were measured with a spectrophotometer (VITA Easyshade V). The color accuracy and bias were described by ΔE00, ΔL∗, Δa∗, and Δb∗ in the CIELab color space, and the data were analyzed by using a 2-way ANOVA, post hoc Tukey-Kramer test, and the t test (α=.05). RESULTS The ΔE00, ΔL∗, Δa∗, and Δb∗ were significantly influenced by material type and thickness (P<.001). Specimens at a thickness of 0.5 mm represented the maximum ΔE00. The minimum ΔE00 was observed at a thickness of 2.0 mm for LAVA Ultimate, 1.5 mm for VITA Enamic and Telio CAD, and 4.0 mm for IPS e.max CAD. The ΔE00 of all specimens significantly exceeded the 50:50% acceptability threshold (1.8 unit) (P<.001). LU exhibited higher ΔE00, Δa∗, and Δb∗ than the other 3 materials in all thickness expect for 0.5 mm. For color bias, the ΔE00 was more influenced by Δb∗ and ΔL∗ than Δa∗. CONCLUSIONS The color accuracy and bias were significantly affected by material type and thickness. The color inaccuracy of the tested materials was statistically significant and clinically perceptible. Improved clinical outcomes may be expected from the 1.5-mm- to 2.0-mm-thick restorations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To derive the K-M optical coefficients of experimental composites and compare the inherent CIE L*, a* and b* color parameters, translucency parameters and both perceptibility and acceptability thresholds. METHODS Experimental composites were prepared with 4 base-monomers: Bis-GMA, UDMA, Bis-EMA and Fit852 with TEGDMA used as a co-monomer and 3 filler:resin fractions (50:50wt%, 60:40wt% and 70:30wt%). The optical absorption (K) and scattering (S) coefficients over the visible spectra were derived. Corrected reflectivity spectra were calculated using the corrected Kubelka-Munk reflectance model and were used to calculate CIE color parameters (X, Y, Z) values. Translucency parameter (TP) was calculated using the CIEDE2000 color difference. A three-way repeated measures ANOVA was used to analyze the CIE L*a* and b* color parameters at infinite thickness. A two-way ANOVA was used to analyze the translucency parameter at 2 mm thickness. Pairwise comparisons were assessed using Bonferroni-corrected Student's t-tests. For all statistical testing α = 0.05 was used. Color parameters (ΔE00) were calculated for every experimental composite using the CIEDE2000 color differences. Perceptibility threshold (PT), acceptability threshold (AT) and translucency differences (ΔTP) were used to compare experimental composites in both filler fraction within every resin and every resin within each filler fraction. RESULTS The statistical analysis revealed a 3-way interaction (P < 0.0001) between base monomer, filler and direction factors. For the translucency parameter, when comparing filler fraction within base monomers, there were statistically significant differences between the filler fraction within all base monomers. The analysis of color differences (ΔE00) of base monomers within filler fraction revealed that the comparison between experimental composites where beyond the acceptability threshold. The comparison of the differences in translucency parameter (ΔTP) of base monomers within filler fraction were beyond the perceptibility threshold, except between base monomers UT and FT. SIGNIFICANCE Different base monomer and filler fraction combination influences the optical characteristics of experimental composites such as: light transmission, translucency, and color appearance.

Abstract
Background: Denture base resin has some drawbacks. This study investigated the impact of nanodiamonds (ND) and autoclave polymerization on the surface characteristics, translucency, and Candida albicans adherence in polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) denture base resin after thermocycling. Methods: Heat-polymerized PMMA discs (15 × 2 mm) with a total sample size n = 160 were studied. Specimens were categorized into two main groups (N = 80): conventional water-bath-polymerized PMMA (CP/PMMA) and autoclave-polymerized PMMA (AP/PMMA). Each group was subdivided according to the ND concentration into four groups (n = 20): unmodified PMMA as a control, and 0.1%, 0.25%, and 0.5% ND–PMMA. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to inspect the morphology of the ND and the ND–PMMA mixtures before heat polymerization. The specimens were exposed to thermal cycling (5000 cycles at 5 and 55 °C), then surface roughness was measured with a non-contact optical interferometric profilometer, contact angle with an automated goniometer, and translucency using a spectrophotometer. Colony-forming units (CFU) were used to determine the adherence of Candida albicans cells to the specimens. ANOVA and Tukey post hoc tests for pairwise comparison were utilized for the statistical analysis (α = 0.05). Results: Surface roughness was significantly reduced with ND addition to CP/PMMA (p ˂ 0.001), while the reduction was not statistically significant in AP/PMMA (p = 0.831). The addition of ND significantly reduced the contact angle, translucency, and Candida albicans count of CP/PMMA and AP/PMMA (p ˂ 0.001). The incorporation of ND in conjunction with autoclave polymerization of PMMA showed significant reduction in all tested properties (surface roughness, contact angle and Candida albicans adherence) except translucency (p = 0.726). Conclusions: ND addition to PMMA and autoclave polymerization improved the surface properties with respect to antifungal activities, while the translucency was adversely affected.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the translucency of denture base acrylic resin reinforced with zirconium dioxide (ZrO2NPs), silicon dioxide (SiO2NPs), and diamond (DNPs) nanoparticles. A total of 130 heat-polymerized acrylic discs (15×2.5 mm) were fabricated conventionally and divided into control and experimental groups according to nanoparticle type and concentration (0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2.5 wt%). Unmodified acrylic resin specimens served as control. All specimens were thermocycled (5,000 cycles). Translucency was measured using a spectrophotometer. ANOVA and post-hoc Turkeys' test were used for data analysis at α=0.05. The translucency of modified PMMA was significantly lower than control (p<0.05) except 0.5% ZrO2NPs and SiO2NPs (p>0.05) which exhibited the highest translucency values among modified groups. As the NPs concentration increased, the translucency decreased and the lowest value was seen with 2.5% DNPs (1.18±0.10). The addition of ZrO2NPs, SiO2NPs, and DNPs into denture base resin decreased the translucency.

Abstract
This study evaluated the effect of the structural color phenomenon in resin composites (RCs) on the color adjustment of restorations by investgating their color reproduction performance in human incisors of various shade. Cervical cavities were filled with a single-shade RC with 260 nm spherical fillers (Omnichroma (OMN)), conventional A2-shade RCs (Estelite Σ Quick or Clearfil AP-X), or experimental RCs with 5-50 nm fumed silica fillers (R1) and 100 nm spherical fillers (R2). Color parameters (L*C*h*) were measured using a CIE XYZ camera along the centerline of the restorations, and the color difference (∆E00) between corresponding areas of intact and restored teeth was calculated. Additionally, the reflectance spectra of OMN, R1, and R2 were investigated. OMN exhibited significantly lower ∆E00 than other tested RCs (p<0.05) and its reflection spectrum ranged from blue to red, while a blue peak was observed with R1 and R2, indicating a higher color adjustment potential of OMN.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Determine the degree of conversion (DC) and in vitro pulpal temperature (PT) rise of low-viscosity (LV) and high-viscosity (HV) conventional resin-based composites (RBC), bulk-fill and short-fibre reinforced composites (SFRC). METHODS The occlusal surface of a mandibular molar was removed to obtain dentine thickness of 2 mm above the roof of the pulp chamber. LV and HV conventional (2 mm), bulk-fill RBCs (2-4 mm) and SFRCs (2-4 mm) were applied in a mold (6 mm inner diameter) placed on the occlusal surface. PT changes during the photo-polymerization were recorded with a thermocouple positioned in the pulp chamber. The DC at the top and bottom of the samples was measured with micro-Raman spectroscopy. ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test, multivariate analysis and partial eta-squared statistics were used to analyze the data (p < 0.05). RESULTS The PT changes ranged between 5.5-11.2 °C. All LV and 4 mm RBCs exhibited higher temperature changes. Higher DC were measured at the top (63-76%) of the samples as compared to the bottom (52-72.6%) in the 2 mm HV conventional and bulk-fill RBCs and in each 4 mm LV and HV materials. The SFRCs showed higher temperature changes and DC% as compared to the other investigated RBCs. The temperature and DC were influenced by the composition of the material followed by the thickness. SIGNIFICANCE Exothermic temperature rise and DC are mainly material dependent. Higher DC values are associated with a significant increase in PT. LV RBCs, 4 mm bulk-fills and SFRCs exhibited higher PTs. Bulk-fills and SFRCs applied in 4 mm showed lower DCs at the bottom.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To assess color compatibility between dental structures (human enamel and dentine) and three different types of ceramic systems. METHODS Samples (1 and 2 mm-thick) of extracted tooth (containing dentine and enamel areas) and three ceramic systems with different shades and opacities (HT-High Translucent, T-Translucent) were prepared for this study: Vita Suprinity-VS (HT, T; A1, A2, A3, A3.5, B2, C2, D2) (Vita Zahnfabrik); Vita Enamic-VE (HT, T; 1M1, 1M2, 2M2, 3M2) (Vita Zahnfabrik) and Noritake Super Porcelain EX-3-NKT (A1, A2, A3, A3.5, B2, C2, D2) (Kuraray Noritake Dental). Reflectance measurements of all samples were performed over black backgrounds using a non-contact spectroradiometer (SpectraScan PR-670, Photo Research) under a CIE 45°/0° geometry. CIE L*a*b* color parameters were measured and CIELAB/CIEDE2000 color differences (ΔE00/ΔE*ab) and corresponding Coverage Error (CE) of ceramic system for dentine or enamel samples were calculated. Color data was analyzed using one-way ANOVA and post-hoc multiple comparisons tests. CE values were interpreted by comparisons with available 50:50% acceptability color threshold (AT) for dentistry. RESULTS Statistically significant differences in lightness were found among all ceramic systems and human dentine (p < 0.001), while no significant differences were registered between enamel and VSHT, T and VEHT. 1 mm dentine showed no statistical differences with VST and VSHT for a* coordinate, while 2 mm dentine showed no significant differences (p > 0.05) with VEHT. Thin samples (1 mm) of dentine and enamel showed significant statistical differences (p < 0.05) for b* coordinate with less translucent materials (NKT, VET and VST). For dentine samples, none of the ceramic materials provided a CE lower than AT. VSHT provided the best CE for 1 mm-thick (CE00 = 1.7, CEab = 1.9) and for 2 mm-thick (CE00 = 2.3; CEab = 2.5) enamel samples. CONCLUSIONS Color coordinates of evaluated esthetic ceramic systems were statistically different from those of human dentine in almost all cases. The evaluated ZrO2 lithium silicate glass-ceramic (VS), with its two levels of translucency, provided lower CE values with human enamel samples while conventional feldspathic ceramic (NKT) and hybrid ceramic systems (VE) demonstrated a better color compatibility with dentin samples.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Whether the addition of different antifungal nanoparticles to denture base materials may affect physical or esthetic properties of the resulting nanocomposite is unclear. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine how a new method of adding antifungal nanofiller affects the properties of the processed nanocomposite denture base material. MATERIAL AND METHODS Heat-polymerized acrylic resin specimens were prepared according to each test specification. Zirconium dioxide nanoparticles (ZrO2NPs) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were added in 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5% of acrylic resin powder. The specimens were divided into 2 groups according to the acrylic resin packing method: 1 layer packed conventionally in one step and 2 layers packed in 2 steps, first with unmodified acrylic resin and then by a thin layer of modified acrylic resin before the final closure. The control group was made of unaltered acrylic resin in 1 step. Flexural strength (FS), translucency, and surface roughness (Ra) were measured. A microbial assay was performed by using the direct culture and slide count methods. Three-way ANOVA and Tukey post hoc tests were used to identify statistical differences among groups (α=.05). RESULTS The addition of ZrO2NPs and AgNPs in the 1- or 2-layer specimens reduced Candida albicans adhesion (P<.001). In the 1- and 2-layer specimens, FS significantly increased with ZrO2NPs. AgNPs decreased FS only in the 1-layer specimen (P<.001). Surface roughness was not changed for the 1- and 2-layer specimens with ZrO2NPs or the 1-layer specimen with 0.5% AgNPs (P>.05), while other AgNP groups exhibited increased surface roughness (P<.001). AgNPs significantly lowered translucency in the 1- and 2-layer specimens (P<.001), while ZrO2NPs decreased translucency only in the 1-layer specimen (P<.001). CONCLUSIONS The addition of ZrO2NPs in the double-layer technique decreased Candida adhesion and improved FS without affecting surface roughness, while AgNPs decreased Candida adhesion and FS and increased surface roughness. Both nanofillers decreased the translucency except 0.5% ZrO2NPs, which did not change translucency when applied in 2 layers.

Abstract
The aim was to evaluate the optical changes of bleached human dentin and the efficacy of Er,Cr:YSGG laser on micro-shear bond strength (μSBS) of two adhesive systems for immediate and delayed applications. Seventy-two human dentin specimens (1 mm) were obtained. Colour measurements of 30 specimens (control and bleaching groups) were made at baseline, after bleaching and a 7-day delay. Differences at colour (ΔE00), translucency (ΔTP00) and whiteness (ΔWID) were calculated by recorded data. Forty-two specimens were used to compare μSBS of a self-etch (Clearfil SE Bond [SE]) and an etch-and-rinse (Prime&Bond NT [PBNT]) adhesive to bleached dentin. Additional to a negative group, six groups were contemplated for each adhesive, considering the time of composite application (immediate, delayed) and whether additional surface treatment by laser (1 W, 2 W) or not. Colour and μSBS data were statistically analysed. For optical analysis, only ΔE00 and ΔWID calculated for the difference between baseline and bleaching were found significantly different for control and bleaching groups. Whiteness of bleached specimens was remarkably decreased after a 7-day delay. Despite immediate applications of SE showing lower μSBS than negative control, delayed applications showed no significant differences except that of the 2 W laser etching. For PBNT, laser etching increased μSBS for both of the immediate and delayed applications, and no significant difference was observed from negative control. Related with the preferred adhesive system, Er,Cr:YSGG laser etching can be an alternative for optimal bond strength of immediate restorations, but the clinicians should always keep in mind that perceived colour and whiteness will change by the passing time which can affect the shade match.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate and correlate light transmittance (T), initial degree of conversion (IDC), and degree of conversion after 24 hr (DC24) for 22 composite resins (CR) for enamel and dentin use. The transmittance (n = 10) was measured with a spectrometer at a wavelength of 468.14 nm. The degree of conversion (DC; n = 5) was measured with Fourier Transform Near-Infrared Spectroscopy before polymerization, immediately after photoactivation, and 24 hr after photoactivation. Both sets of values are provided as percentages. ANOVA and Games-Howell (α = 5%) tests showed that Filtek Supreme Ultra gave the highest T values of all enamel CRs, while Esthet-X HD presented the lowest. Meanwhile, Venus diamond gave the highest values of all dentin CRs, while Esthet-X HD gave the lowest. For IDC and DC24, ANOVA showed differences between individual CRs and the two CR types (p < .0001). Despite the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that there was no correlation between T and either IDC or DC24 (p > .05); however, IDC and DC24 were strongly correlated (p < .05) by Pearson's correlation. That being said, as a higher DC reflects better mechanical properties, certain conclusions can be drawn about overall performance. The best IDC values were observed for the Opallis enamel resin and the Opallis and Premise dentin resins. Meanwhile, the best DC24 values were observed for the Opallis, Charisma, and Premise enamel resins and the Opallis and Premise dentin resins. Degree of conversion and light transmittance showed differences between composite resin types (enamel and dentin) and brands. It is important to know at the moment of composite choice taking into account mechanical and optical properties.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The identification of aesthetic dental materials during clinical dental examination can be challenging especially as patients and dental manufacturers place great emphasis on filling materials being as close as possible in appearance to the natural tooth. This makes dental identification in a forensic setting even more complicated. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to develop a simple method using photographic analyses to determine differences in fluorescence and reflectance between brands and shades. METHOD Three discs of 95 shades of resin composites (n = 285) were produced. Photographs were taken using a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera attached to a dark box illuminated by an ultraviolet (UV) flashlight (wavelength 385 ± 10 nm) in a standardised manner. Images were analysed using an image software. The lightness (L) component according to the CIELAB was recorded. Kruskal-Wallis test was used to compare the mean lightness of the different samples followed by Dunn's test for multiple comparisons. The level of significance was set at P < 0.05. RESULTS L values ranged from 238.81 to 49.74. Fluorescence and reflectance were categorized according to crescent L values into 5 categories and organized into a Fluorescence and Reflectance Scale. Overall, dentin shades showed similar L values when compared to the same enamel shade from the same manufacturer. Comparison of L values for shades A1E and A3.5E demonstrated that darker shades had lower L values. CONCLUSIONS UV light allowed the recording of the Lightness component of CIELAB of a composite with little variation between images. The Fluorescence and Reflectance Scale allows the examiner to identify a specific brand or restrict the possibilities down to two brands. This information could help in cases of identification especially when ante-mortem data is limited.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the effect of light-illuminating direction (from composite or enamel side) on color adjustment at the coronal and cervical enamel borders in composite restorations. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty cylindrical holes (3.0-mm diameters) were prepared in bovine enamel disks (1.0-mm thickness). After application of a one-step self-etch adhesive, one of four resin composites (Estelite Asteria, EA; Estelite Pro, EP; Kalore, KA; Clearfil Majesty ES-2 Premium, MJ) was restored in the holes. After 24-h storage, the colors (L*, C*, or h* values) at the restored enamel disks over a black background were measured in a black box using a CIE XYZ camera, spotted with D65 standard illuminant either from coronal or cervical side at 45°/0° geometry. The color shifting rate was calculated at the coronal and cervical enamel borders of the composite restorations, and analyzed by three-way ANOVA with Dunnett's T3 and t test for post hoc analysis (p < 0.05). RESULTS The light-illuminating directions significantly affected the L* shifting rate at the cervical enamel border in EP and MJ (p < 0.05), and the C* shifting rate at the coronal enamel border in EA, EP, and MJ (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The color appearance at the border of the composite restoration was influenced by the light-illuminating direction in conjunction with the enamel rod orientation in the coronal or cervical enamel border. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The line-of-vision angle would affect the perception of color adaptation at the enamel borders in the composite restorations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To measure and compare in vivo and in vitro pulp temperature (PT) increase (ΔTEMP) over baseline, physiologic temperature using the same intact upper premolars exposed to the same Polywave® LED curing light. METHODOLOGY After local Ethics Committee approval (#255,945), local anesthesia, rubber dam isolation, small occlusal preparations/minute pulp exposure (n=15) were performed in teeth requiring extraction for orthodontic reasons. A sterile probe of a temperature measurement system (Temperature Data Acquisition, Physitemp) was placed within the pulp chamber and the buccal surface was sequentially exposed to a LED LCU (Bluephase 20i, Ivoclar Vivadent) using the following exposure modes: 10-s low or high, 5-s Turbo, and 60-s high. Afterwards, the teeth were extracted and K-type thermocouples were placed within the pulp chamber through the original access. The teeth were attached to an assembly simulating the in vivo environment, being similarly exposed while real-time temperature (°C) was recorded. ΔTEMP values and time for temperature to reach maximum (ΔTIME) were subjected to two-way ANOVA and Bonferroni's post-hoc tests (pre-set alpha 0.05). RESULTS Higher ΔTEMP was observed in vitro than in vivo. No significant difference in ΔTIME was observed between test conditions. A significant, positive relationship was observed between radiant exposure and ΔTEMP for both conditions (in vivo: r2=0.917; p<0.001; in vitro: r2=0.919; p<0.001). CONCLUSION Although the in vitro model overestimated in vivo PT increase, in vitro PT rise was close to in vivo values for clinically relevant exposure modes.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of finishing and polishing systems and toothbrush abrasion on transmittance (T) and surface roughness (Ra) of three composite resins (Filtek Z350 XT, Tetric N-Ceram, and IPS Empress Direct). Eighteen resin disks (10 mm diameter × 2 mm thick) finished by polyester strips had initial surface smoothness recorded, representing phase 1 (P1). Specimens were divided into three groups (n=6) according to the finishing/polishing instrument used (OneGloss, TopGloss, and Sof-Lex) to compose phase 2 samples (P2). Then specimens were subjected to 514 cycles of toothbrush simulation using a toothpaste slurry, with a constant load applied to soft bristles, and were then washed (phase 3=P3). After each phase, the specimens were examined by an optical profiler and spectrophotometer to measure Ra and T. Data were analyzed by analysis of variance, Tukey and Pearson tests. T values were statistically influenced by composite resin ( p=0.000) and phase of measurement ( p=0.000) factors, while the finishing/polishing system used ( p=0.741) did not affect T. On the other hand, Ra values were statistically affected by the factor finishing/polishing system ( p=0.000), but not by composite resin ( p=0.100) and phase of measurement ( p=0.451). Tetric N-Ceram and Empress Direct presented higher values of roughness when polished by OneGloss, while TopGloss and Sof-Lex showed a lower roughness. It can be concluded that composite resins transmitted more light after dental abrasion. Transmittance of composite resins was not modified by the distinct roughness created by finishing/polishing instruments.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to derive and compare the inherent color (hue angle, chroma), translucency (TPSCI), surface gloss (ΔE*SCE-SCI), and surface roughness (Ra) amongst selected shades and brands of three hybrid CAD/CAM blocks [GC Cerasmart (CS); Lava Ultimate (LU); Vita Enamic (VE)]. MATERIALS AND METHODS The specimens (N = 225) were prepared into square-shaped (12 × 12 mm2) with different thicknesses and shades. The measurements of color, translucency, and surface gloss were performed by a reflection spectrophotometer. The surface roughness and surface topography were assessed by white light interferometry. RESULTS Results revealed that hue and chroma values were influenced by the material type, material shade, and material thickness (P < .001). The order of hue angle amongst the materials was LU > CS > VE, whereas the order of chroma was VE > CS > LU. TPSCI results demonstrated a significant difference in terms of material types and material thicknesses (P ≤ .001). TPSCI values of the tested materials were ordered as LU > CS > VE. ΔE*SCE-SCI and Ra results were significantly varied amongst the materials (P < .001) and amongst the shades (P < .05). The order of ΔE*SCE-SCI amongst the materials were as follows LU > VE ≥ CS, whereas the order of Ra was CS ≥ VE > LU. CONCLUSION Nano-ceramic and polymer-infiltrated-feldspathic ceramic-network CAD/CAM materials exhibited different optical, inherent color and surface parameters.

Abstract
Background Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is widely used for the fabrication of removable prostheses. Recently, zirconium oxide nanoparticles (nano-ZrO2) have been added to improve some properties of PMMA, but their effect on the optical properties and tensile strength are neglected. Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of nano-ZrO2 addition on the translucency and tensile strength of the PMMA denture base material. Materials and methods Eighty specimens (40 dumbbell-shaped and 40 discs) were prepared out of heat-polymerized acrylic resin and divided into four groups per test (n=10). The control group for each test included unreinforced acrylic, while the test groups were reinforced with 2.5, 5, and 7.5 wt% nano-ZrO2. Acrylic resin was mixed according to manufacturer’s instructions, packed, and processed by conventional method. After polymerization, all specimens were finished, polished, and stored in distilled water at 37°C for 48±2 hours. Tensile strength (MPa) was evaluated using the universal testing machine while the specimens’ translucency was examined using a spectrophotometer. Statistical analysis was carried out by SPSS using the paired sample t-test (p≤0.05). A scanning electron microscope was used to analyze the morphological changes and topography of the fractured surfaces. Results This study showed that the mean tensile strength of the PMMA in the test groups of 2.5%NZ, 5%NZ, and 7.5%NZ was significantly higher than the control group. The tensile strength increased significantly after nano-ZrO2 addition, and the maximum increase seen was in the 7.5%NZ group. The translucency values of the experimental groups were significantly lower than those of the control group. Within the reinforced groups, the 2.5%NZ group had significantly higher translucency values when compared to the 5%NZ and 7.5%NZ groups. Conclusion The addition of nano-ZrO2 increased the tensile strength of the denture base acrylic. The increase was directly proportional to the nano-ZrO2 concentration. The translucency of the PMMA was reduced as the nano-ZrO2 increased. Clinical significance Based on the results of the current study, the tensile strength was improved with different percentages of nano-ZrO2 additions. However, translucency was adversely affected. Therefore, it is important to determine the appropriate amount of reinforcing nano-ZrO2 that will create a balance between achieved properties – mechanical and optical.

Abstract
Contemporary dentistry literally cannot be performed without use of resin-based restorative materials. With the success of bonding resin materials to tooth structures, an even wider scope of clinical applications has arisen for these lines of products. Understanding of the basic events occurring in any dental polymerization mechanism, regardless of the mode of activating the process, will allow clinicians to both better appreciate the tremendous improvements that have been made over the years, and will also provide valuable information on differences among strategies manufacturers use to optimize product performance, as well as factors under the control of the clinician, whereby they can influence the long-term outcome of their restorative procedures.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate color stability of 3 restorative materials, discoloration ability of different solutions, efficacy of 2 office bleaching agents, and surface roughness and topography. Sixty specimens for Clearfil Majesty Esthetic (CME), Lava Ultimate (LU), and Vita Enamic (VE) were prepared. They were immersed into 3 staining solutions for 2 weeks and then they were bleached. According to the measured L⁎, a⁎, and b⁎ parameters described by CIELAB system, color changes (ΔE00), translucency parameters (TP), whiteness index values (W⁎), and changes in closeness to pure white (ΔW⁎) were calculated. Then 3 specimens from each group were scanned with an atomic force microscope for surface analysis. After staining, CME groups and control groups of LU and VE showed clinically acceptable color changes (ΔE00 < 1,8). After bleaching, while a reverse effect on color was observed, VE showed the furthest color values to pure white. There was no statistically significant difference between whiteness index values of LU and CME. LU was the most translucent material during the study and TP values of materials showed minimal differences. Most of the VE groups and a control group of LU showed surface roughness (Ra) values higher than critical value for biofilm accumulation (0,2 μm).

Abstract
SUMMARY
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of three resin composite systems to mask a severely discolored background by the application of a layering technique through CIELAB and CIEDE2000 analysis. Ninety 1.5-mm-thick disc specimens were produced from three different resin composite restoration systems: IPS Empress Direct (Ivoclar Vivadent), Charisma Diamond (Heraeus Kulzer), and Filtek Z350 XT (3M-ESPE). The specimens were divided into groups according to the restoration system and the resin composite shade combination used for the layering technique (enamel, body, and dentin shades). Color measurements were performed by a reflectance spectrophotometer (SP60, EX-Rite) against a C4 shade background and an inherent color background, which simulates a severely discolored background and a tooth surface with no discoloration, respectively. The total color difference between both color measurements was calculated by CIELAB (ΔE*ab) and CIEDE2000 (ΔE00) formulas. The mean ΔEab* and ΔE00 values were analyzed by analysis of variance (general linear models) and Tukey's post hoc tests (α=0.05). Three groups presented clinically acceptable color difference values (ΔE*≦3.46 and ΔE00≦2.25): 1.5 mm dentin, 1.0 mm dentin/0.5 mm body, and 1.0 mm dentin/0.5 mm enamel; ie, all the groups from the Z350 XT restoration system. The resin composite layering technique is an effective way to mask severely discolored backgrounds. The Filtek Z350 XT system was the only restoration system capable of masking the C4 background.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate, using Kubelka-Munk reflectance theory, the scattering (S), absorption (K), transmittance (T) and light reflectivity (RI) of incisors, canines and molars human dentine. METHODS Eighty-one human teeth (incisors, canines and molars) were used in this study. All teeth crowns were sectioned using a water-cooled diamond saw at low speed. The obtained dentine samples were polished to a final thickness of 2mm. The relative spectral radiance was measured against black and white backgrounds, using a spectroradiometer in a viewing cabinet with D65 illuminant. Kubelka-Munk equations were used to calculate the scattering and absorption coefficients, transmittance and light reflectivity. Kruskal-Wallis rank sum test was performed to compare the mean values of Kubelka-Munk coefficients of human incisors, canines and molars dentine samples followed by Kruskal-Wallis multiple comparison tests for pairwise comparisons. RESULTS The spectral behavior of S, T and RI exhibited similar trends for all three types of dentine samples. However, highly significant differences (p<0.001) were found between their magnitudes in the three types of dentine samples (p<0.001). Only the magnitudes of the K coefficients were found to be similar (p=0.235) between incisors, canines and molars. Canine's dentine samples showed highest S and RI values, while human molars dentine samples exhibited highest K and T values. CONCLUSIONS Within the limitations of this study, the optical properties of human dentine are strongly influenced by the type of tooth. The results of the present study can be used as reference in the development of aesthetic dental restorative materials. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS The significant differences identified in the optical behavior of the dentine from the three types of teeth have to be taken into consideration by the dentist and the dental technician when pursuing biomimetics with any restorative material in esthetic dentistry.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aims to evaluate the accuracy of a powder-free three-dimensional (3D) measuring system (CEREC Omnicam, Sirona), when scanning the surface of a material at different angles. Additionally, the influence of water was investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS Nine different materials were combined with human tooth surface (enamel) to create n = 27 specimens. These materials were: Controls (InCoris TZI and Cerec Guide Bloc), ceramics (Vitablocs® Mark II and IPS Empress CAD), metals (gold and amalgam) and composites (Tetric Ceram, Filtek Supreme A2B and A2E). The highly polished samples were scanned at different angles with and without water. The 216 scans were then analyzed and descriptive statistics were obtained. RESULTS The height difference between the tooth and material surfaces, as measured with the 3D scans, ranged from 0.83 μm (±2.58 μm) to -14.79 μm (±3.45 μm), while the scan noise on the materials was between 3.23 μm (±0.79 μm) and 14.24 μm (±6.79 μm) without considering the control groups. Depending on the thickness of the water film, measurement errors in the order of 300-1,600 μm could be observed. CONCLUSIONS The inaccuracies between the tooth and material surfaces, as well as the scan noise for the materials, were within the range of error for measurements used for conventional impressions and are therefore negligible. The presence of water, however, greatly affects the scan. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The tested powder-free 3D measuring system can safely be used to scan different material surfaces without the prior application of a powder, although drying of the surface prior to scanning is highly advisable.

Abstract
Background: The properties of the composite materials and the clinical expertise while layering them carry many esthetic implications in restorative dentistry. Aims: The aim of the present study is to assess the influence of scattering properties of G-aenial A2 shade on color perception when used in esthetic restorations. Materials and Methods: Two composite resins were evaluated in this study: Gradia Direct (shade A3) and G-aenial (shade A2). A colorimetric evaluation according to the CIE L*a*b* system, relative to standard illuminant A against a white background, was performed to assess the referred chameleonic properties of G-aenial when used in simulated clinical situations. Statistical Analysis Used: The differences in color change between the test group G-aenial and the test Group Gradia Direct were considered clinically not perceptible (ΔE* <3.3). Differently, the differences in color change were considered clinically perceptible (ΔE* >3.3) between the control group G-aenial and the control group Gradia Direct and between the test group G-aenial and the control specimens obtained with G-aenial. The CIE Lab parameters which brought to ΔE were investigated using t-test (P < 0.05). Results and Conclusions: Color harmonization in simulated clinical conditions depends on different factors related to dentine and to composite resins. In this study dentine variables were dropped in order to analyze the influence of thickness and of the composition of the composite resin.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of tooth age on colour adjustment potential of resin composite restorations in human teeth. METHODS Twenty extracted human premolars with an A2 shade, extracted for orthodontic reasons from younger patients (20-28yrs) (younger teeth) and periodontal reasons from older patients (45-69yrs) (older teeth), were used in this study. Cylindrical shaped cavities (3.0mm depth; 2.0mm diameter) were prepared in the centre of the crowns on the buccal surface. One of four resin composites of A2 shade (Kalore, KA; Solare, SO; Clearfil Majesty, MJ; Beautifil II, BF) was placed in the cavity, and the colour was measured at four areas (0.4mm×0.4mm) on the restored teeth (area 1; tooth area 1.0mm away from the border of resin composite restoration: area 2; tooth border area 0.3mm away from margin of resin composite restoration: area 3; resin composite border area 0.3mm away from margin of resin composite restoration: area 4; resin composite area at the centre of resin composite restoration) using a spectrophotometer (Crystaleye). The colour of each area was determined according to the CIELAB colour scale. Colour differences (ΔE*) between the areas of 1 and 2, 2 and 3, 3 and 4 and 1 and 4 were calculated, and also the ratio of ΔE*area2-3 to ΔE*area1-4 (ΔE*area2-3/1-4), ΔE*area3-4 to ΔE*area1-4 (ΔE*area3-4/1-4) and ΔE*area1-2 to ΔE*area1-4 (ΔE*area1-2/1-4) as a parameter of the colour shift in resin composite restoration, were determined. Moreover, the light transmission characteristics of the resin materials and dentine discs from the younger and older teeth were measured using a goniophotometer. The data were statistically analyzed using two-way ANOVA, and Dunnett's T3 and t-test for the post hoc test. RESULTS ΔE*area2-3 (colour difference between resin composite and tooth at the border) and ΔE*area1-4 (colour difference between resin composite and tooth) of the older teeth groups were significantly larger than those of younger teeth groups (p<0.05). The ΔE*area2-3/1-4 (mis-match rate in colour shifting at the border) of the older teeth groups was larger than that of the younger teeth groups (p<0.05). ΔE*area3-4/1-4 (colour shifting rate of resin composite side) was significantly larger in older teeth than younger teeth (p<0.05), while ΔE*area1-2/1-4 (colour shifting rate of tooth side), was significantly smaller in older teeth than younger teeth (p<0.05). In each tooth group, there were no significant differences in ΔE*area2-3, ΔE*area1-4, ΔE*area2-3/1-4, ΔE*area3-4/1-4 and ΔE*area1-2/1-4 between the materials (p>0.05). Analysis of the light transmission properties indicated that older dentine transmitted more light, while younger dentine exhibited greater light diffusion and transmitted less light. CONCLUSIONS The colour shifting effects at the border of the resin composite restorations were influenced by the age of the tooth. This behaviour might be influenced by the light transmission characteristics of dentine in restored teeth. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The potential for colour adjustment of resin composite restorations may be less in older teeth than younger teeth.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM There are several ways to measure the translucency of materials, as various basic colorimetric concepts have been used to describe the translucency of natural and esthetic dental materials. There are currently no guidelines regarding which method to use to describe the translucency of these materials. PURPOSES OF STUDY Two initial purposes of this study are to review the initial developments of the major translucency measurement methods first in the color science literature and then in the dentistry literature, and to review in the dentistry literature the recent uses of the various translucency measurement methods in light of the objectives of the presented research. MATERIAL AND METHODS A major color science textbook was reviewed to obtain the background information and selected references regarding the original methods of opacity measurement and the original references regarding the development and use of a translucency parameter were also reviewed. Then the recent dentistry literature was reviewed to describe the uses of the various methods of opacity or translucency determinations for various dental materials. RESULTS The three major methods of translucency measurement were found to be contrast ratio, transmittance, and translucency parameter, with the contrast ratio and transmittance methods each having the possibility of being either luminous or spectral. Translucency measurements were mainly used to describe dental resin composites and dental ceramic materials, but prosthetic elastomers, fiber posts, orthodontic brackets, natural tooth dentine and enamel, and combinations of materials were also studied using at least one of these methods. CONCLUSIONS The more-developed use of models that relate the thickness of the translucent materials to the translucency measurement of interest is encouraged. Also, care must be taken when comparing previously generated translucency measurements with any newly generated data because technical details of the thickness and the backings used in previous research must be matched or adjustments must be made to make any newly generated data comparable with published values. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The method of specifying the translucency of esthetic dental materials may be based on clinical appearance requirements of the patient, on technical demands of optimizing the setting of underlying material, or on both. The method or methods used to describe translucency may provide clinically relevant information in order for the clinician to select the optimum material to satisfy these requirements.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of simulated toothbrushing over ten weeks on the roughness and optical stability (colour, translucency and gloss) of microfilled - Mf (Durafil VS), microhybrid - Mh (Empress Direct) and nanofilled - Nf (Z 350) resin-based composites (RBC). METHODS The roughness, colour, translucency and gloss of each RBC were measured before and after storage in distilled water (DW) and propionic acid (PA) for ten weeks. The specimens were removed from the media each week, submitted to toothbrushing simulation and the properties measured. The obtained data were analyzed using a multifactor analysis of variance (MANOVA) and Tukey's HSD test (α=0.05). RESULTS The roughness significantly increased after ten weeks for the three RBCs (p<0.05), with the final values of roughness presenting no statistical differences among them (p>0.05). Only Mf and Nf immersed in DW and Mh immersed in PA presented a change in colour after ten weeks (p<0.05), although the change in colour was lower after immersion in PA for the three RBCs (p<0.05). None of the RBCs presented significant changes in translucency after ten weeks (p>0.05). Only Mh immersed in DW presented gloss stability after ten weeks (p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS Toothbrushing increased the roughness and diminished the gloss of the three RBCs. The translucency was not influenced by the toothbrushing. The immersion in propionic acid produced lower alterations in colour than did immersion in distilled water. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE In general, the three RBCs presented similar optical behaviours after toothbrushing over ten weeks. Thus, it is possible that anterior restorations produced with these materials will not present perceptible differences over time.
