Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Limited evidence is available for the effect of chairside adjustment using rotary cutting instruments on the surface roughness and optical properties of different zirconia types. PURPOSE To evaluate the effect of simulated adjustments on surface roughness and optical properties of different zirconia types. MATERIALS AND METHODS Three Partially Stabilized Zirconia (PSZ) types based on mole percent yttria (Y) concentration from the same manufacturer (Katana; Kuraray) were used: 3Y-PSZ, 4Y-PSZ, and 5Y-PSZ. Thirty disk-shaped specimens (Ø14 × 1.2 mm) from different zirconia types (N = 90) were prepared. Specimens were either left without adjustment (NA), adjusted with Dialite ZR finishing and polishing system (Brasseler) (APol), or adjusted with course diamond instruments only (ADia). The specimens were distributed into 9 groups (n = 10): Group 3Y-PSZ/NA, Group 3Y-PSZ/APol, Group 3Y-PSZ/ADia, Group 4Y-PSZ/NA, Group 4Y-PSZ/APol, Group 4Y-PSZ/ADia, Group 5Y-PSZ/NA, Group 5Y-PSZ/APol, and Group 5Y-PSZ/ADia. The surface roughness of specimen was analyzed using an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) (Bruker's Dimension Icon, Bruker) and Root Means Square (RMS) were recorded (nm). Surface Gloss (SG), Translucency Parameter (TP), and Contrast Ratio (CR) values of all groups were recorded using an integrating sphere spectrophotometer. Statistical analysis was performed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's multiple comparison tests for pairwise comparisons at p < 0.05 and 95% confidence interval. RESULTS APol had no effect on the surface roughness (p = 0.88) while ADia had a significant negative effect (p < 0.05) despite the type of zirconia. Out of the three testes optical properties, only SG was negatively affected by ADia for all types of zirconia (p < 0.05). The two adjustment types did not affect the TP of all the tested zirconia (p = 0.91). The CR was not affected by the tested adjustments for all zirconia types (p = 0.726). CONCLUSION Proper zirconia adjustment following a sequence of burs and polishers can maintain acceptable roughness and optical properties. Adjustment of zirconia with rough diamond can lead to deleterious effects and should be avoided. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Chairside adjustment of zirconia could lead to rougher surface and unpredictable changes of surface gloss. Therefore, zirconia adjustment should be minimized to the greatest extent possible and a proper protocol should be followed if had to be done.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the translucency of machinable and printable ceramic-glass polymer materials with different thicknesses. METHODS Five ceramic-glass polymer materials were tested: one 3D-printable material, Permanent Crown resin (3D), two machinable materials available at low translucency (LT) and high translucency (HT) levels, VITA Enamic (VE) HT/LT, and Cerasmart 270 (CS) HT/LT. A total of 100 specimens were produced across 10 subgroups (n = 10) with thicknesses of 1 mm and 1.5 mm. The colour coordinates of the specimens were measured against black and white backgrounds using a spectrophotometer. Translucency was quantified using the Relative Translucency Parameter (RTP), calculated via the CIEDE2000 formula. A two-way ANOVA followed by post-hoc tests with Bonferroni correction (α = 0.05) was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS The RTP for both thicknesses were ranked as follows: CSHT > VEHT > CSLT > 3D > VELT. The RTP of the 3D was lower than that of the HT machinable materials (CSHT and VEHT) for both thicknesses (p < 0.05). No significant difference was observed between the RTP of 3D and CSLT at 1.5 mm (p = 1.000); however, at 1 mm, the RTP of the 3D was lower than that of the CSLT (p < 0.05). Notably, the 3D showed the least translucency difference with a 0.5 mm increase in thickness. CONCLUSIONS Printable ceramic-glass polymer materials demonstrated lower translucency than HT machinable ceramic-glass polymer materials. Both the thickness and type significantly influenced the translucency of the LT machinable counterparts compared to the printable ceramic-glass polymer material. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Printable ceramic-glass polymer resins may be a suitable option for minimally invasive procedures, especially when attempting to mask undesirable-coloured abutments. When selecting HT machinable ceramic-glass polymers, clinicians should pay greater attention to the abutment colour and thickness of the restorative material.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the influence of denture cleansers on the color, stability, and surface roughness of three-dimensional (3D)-printed denture base resins modified with zirconium dioxide nanoparticles (nano-ZrO2). A total of 440 specimens were fabricated using one heat-polymerized resin, and two 3D-printed resins (NextDent and ASIGA). According to the nano-ZrO2 content, the specimens for each resin were divided into five groups (0%, 0.5%wt, 1%wt, 3%wt, and 5%wt). Each concentration was divided into four subgroups (n = 10) based on the immersion solution (distilled water, sodium hypochlorite, Corega, and Fittydent) and immersion duration (360 and 720 days). The color changes (∆E00) and surface roughness (Ra, µm) of each specimen were measured at different time intervals (base line, 360 days, 720 days) using a spectrophotometer and a non-contact profilometer, respectively. The results were statistically analyzed using ANOVA and a post hoc Tukey's test (α = 0.05). Sodium hypochlorite showed the highest significant color change of all the denture base resins (p < 0.001). The average value of ΔE00 for sodium hypochlorite was significantly higher than the values for the other solutions (Fittydent, Corega, and water) (p < 0.001). Color stability was significantly affected by immersion time for all types of solutions except Corega (p < 0.001). All of the tested immersion solutions (distilled water, sodium hypochlorite, Corega, and Fittydent) showed a significant increase in the surface roughness of all the denture base resins (p < 0.05). Surface roughness was substantially increased by immersion time for all types of solution except Fittydent (p < 0.001). Denture cleansers can result in substantial color change and affect the surface roughness of unmodified and nanoparticle-modified denture base resins. Therefore, the selection of denture cleanser and appropriate types of material is critical for denture longevity.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Clinical information regarding the color stability of lithium disilicate veneers by using different methods of evaluation is scarce. PURPOSE This clinical trial aimed to evaluate whether digital photographs are a reliable method of clinically assessing the color stability of lithium disilicate veneers. Standardized digital photographs (ELAB) were compared with the VITA Easyshade spectrophotometer (ES) at baseline and at a 6-month follow-up. MATERIAL AND METHODS A split-mouth model was used in this randomized clinical trial to assess the performance of ceramic veneers (N=162), which were produced by either the CAD (IPS e.max CAD; n=81) or PRESS technique by heat pressing (IPS e.max PRESS; n=81), including the color dimension assessment. The ELAB evaluation was performed by making digital photographs with polarized light and a white balance (WhiBal) card. These data were transferred to the Adobe Lightroom CC2015 software program in RAW extension. The Digital Color Meter App (Apple) was used to measure L∗, a∗, and b∗ coordinates in this method. The ES color evaluation was performed with a spectrophotometer (Easy Shade) (control group) in the CIELab system. Measurements were performed 1 week after cementation (baseline) and at a 6-month follow-up. Data collected by the ELAB and ES methods were analyzed by a blinded calibrated operator to calculate ΔE by using the Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon test (α=.05). RESULTS For all periods, the comparison among ELAB and ES methods (P=.331), CAD×PRESS by ELAB (P=.658), and CAD×PRESS by ES (P=.833) showed no statistically significant differences. CONCLUSIONS Standardized digital photographs (ELAB) were shown to be a straightforward and available resource for evaluating the color stability of lithium disilicate veneers, manufactured by CAD or PRESS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Demonstrate the ability of 0.5 mm thickness lithium disilicate laminates associated with resin cement to mask different substrate saturations. METHODS 60 specimens (n = 5) were prepared with CAD/CAM lithium disilicate glass-ceramic IPS e.max CAD, 0.5 mm thick, in three degrees of translucency (HT, MT and LT); cemented by Variolink Esthetic LC Light+ (L) and Neutral (N) on composite resin substrates A1 and A4 shades. Color measurements were performed by a spectrophotometer (CM-3700d -Konica Minolta). The L*, a*, b* parameters of the tri-layer structure (laminate/ resin cement/ substrate) were used to calculate color difference ( ∆ E 00 ) by CIEDE2000 formula and Translucency Parameter (TP 00 ). This study adopted ∆ E 00 = 0.8, as perceptibility threshold (PT), and ∆ E 00 = 1.8, as acceptability threshold (AT). Statistical analyses were performed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey tests (a = 0.05). RESULTS Color difference between resin cement shades showed statistical differences (p < 0.0001) and ∆ E 00 > 1.8 for all groups. Color difference between substrates saturations showed a significant statistical difference (p < 0.0001) and ∆ E 00 values above AT for all groups. TheTP 00 demonstrated significant statistical differences (p < 0.0001). The LTL combination, the opaquest set, showed the smallest ∆ E 00 values between substrate shades differences, however, above AT. CONCLUSION The translucency of the lithium disilicate, the substrate saturation and the resin cement opacity influenced final color of restoration. The ceramic translucency impact on final color was reduced by opaque resin cement. Furthermore, the LT lithium disilicate and the Light+ resin cement reduced the translucency of the restoration, contributing to mask saturated substrate. CLINICAL RELEVANCE This study shows the influence of conservative lithium disilicate laminates with different degrees of translucency associated with resin cement on final color of saturated substrate restorations. A minimally invasive esthetic protocol for masking substrates is demonstrated by associating low translucency ceramic laminates and opaque resin cement.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the optical properties and the relative translucency parameter of Ceramill ZI White (3Y-TZP) and Ceramill Zolid FX White (5Y-PSZ) zirconia ceramic systems and compare them with those of the bovine dentin and enamel/dentin structures. MATERIALS AND METHODS 3Y-TZP and 5Y-PSZ zirconia ceramic systems were evaluated. A 0.5-mm-thick 3Y-TZP (3Y-NC.5), 0.5-mm-thick (5Y-NC.5), and 1.4-mm-thick (5Y-C.14) were used. A 0.5-mm-thick dentin specimens and 1.4-mm-thick enamel/dentin specimens (n = 5) were obtained from anterior bovine maxillary teeth. Scattering, absorption, transmittance, and albedo coefficient were calculated using Kubelka-Munk's model. Data were statistically analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests (p < 0.001), and goodness-of-fit coefficient (GFC). Relative translucency parameter differences were evaluated using translucency thresholds. RESULTS Reflectance, scattering, absorption, and transmittance properties were wavelength dependent. Good matches (GFC ≥ 0.999) in spectral reflectance were observed between 0.5-mm-thick dentin and 1.4-mm-thick enamel/dentin, and 3Y-NC.5 and 5Y-NC.5. Scattering was the main optical extinction process during light interaction with zirconia and dental structures, as indicated by albedo coefficient. Translucency differences were acceptable only for 3Y-NC.5 and the dentin structure, and 5Y-C.14 and the enamel/dentin structure. CONCLUSIONS Optical properties of 3Y-TZP and 5Y-PSZ dental zirconia differed from each other and from bovine dental structures. Nevertheless, 3Y-TZP showed similar relative translucency parameter to bovine dentin. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE To achieve the best esthetic results in restorative dentistry, it is crucial for clinicians to know about the optical properties of 3Y-TZP and 5Y-PSZ and to be able to compare these properties with those of dental structures.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of resin composite layering on discolored substrates to obtain masking ability with monolithic ceramics. MATERIALS AND METHODS Four groups (n = 8) of computer-aided design/computer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) monolithic ceramics, shade A1, with thicknesses of 1.0 and 1.5 mm, were tested: feldspathic (FC), leucite-reinforced (LC), lithium disilicate-reinforced (LD), and translucent zirconia (5YSZ). Five substrates were used: A1 (used as reference), A3.5, C4, and coppery and silvery metals. The substrates were separated as non-layered or layered (with flowable opaque resin composite (FL), white opaque restorative resin composite (WD), and A1-shaded opaque restorative resin composite (A1D)). Resin composite layers of 0.5 and 1.0 mm were tested. The try-in paste, shade A1, was used as a luting agent. Translucency parameter (TP00 ) was assessed for the ceramics. Color differences (∆E00 ) were assessed for the restorative ceramics and resin composite layers over discolored substrates with the CIEDE2000 formula. The results were compared statistically, and descriptively with acceptability (AT, 1.77) and perceptibility (PT, 0.81) thresholds. RESULTS Feldspathic showed the highest TP00 (for both ceramic thicknesses) and LD the lowest (for 1.5 mm of ceramic thickness) (P < 0.001). For substrate A3.5, layering with 1.0 mm of A1D or WD ensured ∆E00 below PT for all ceramics tested (P < 0.001). The use of 0.5 mm of FL or 1.0 mm of A1D associated with ceramics LC, LD, and 5YSZ ensured ∆E00 below AT for substrates C4 and coppery metal (P < 0.001). Silvery background layered with 0.5 mm of FL presented ∆E00 below AT for all ceramics and ∆E00 below PT for lithium disilicate of 1.0 mm of thickness (∆E00 = 0.72). CONCLUSIONS Layering severely discolored substrates with selected opaque resin composites ensures masking ability for restoration with CAD/CAM monolithic ceramics. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Severely discolored substrates are predictably restored with monolithic CAD/CAM ceramics by performing a previous layering of the substrate with opaque resin composite.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of cross-polarization filters on the colors of shade tabs obtained with a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera, macrolens, and a ring flash. MATERIALS AND METHODS Digital images of four shade tables (1M1, 3L2.5, 3R2.5, and 5M3) from the VITA Toothguide 3D-Master shade guide were taken using a DSLR camera, 100 mm macrolens, and ring flash with two different cross-polarizing filters (Polar_eyes and Filtropolar), and without (Nonpolarizer; n = 7). The CIE L*a*b* color coordinates of digital images were calculated and remeasured with a spectroradiometer (SR). The color differences (ΔE00 ) between the SR and digital images were calculated and analyzed with the two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey HSD test (α = 0.05). RESULTS ΔE00 values of all test groups were higher than the clinically acceptable threshold (∆E00 > 1.80). While the ∆E00 values of Filtropolar (6.19 ± 0.44) and Polar_eyes (7.82 ± 0.23) groups were significantly higher than the Nonpolarizer (4.69 ± 0.32) for the 1M1 shade tab, ∆E00 value of Polar_eyes (6.23 ± 0.34) was significantly lower than Nonpolarizer (10.71 ± 0.48) group for 5M3 shade tab (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION The color-matching results of tested digital photography techniques with and without cross-polarization were unacceptable, compared to a spectroradiometer. While digital photography with Polar_eyes cross-polarizing filter has closer results to the reference device for the low-in-value shade table (5M3), for the high-in-value shade table (1M1), improved results were obtained without a cross-polarizing filter. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The cross-polarization filters are increasingly used in dentistry for tooth color communication with digital photography techniques. However, the digital photography techniques with-without cross-polarization filterers should be improved to obtain clinically acceptable color-matching results.

Abstract
The clinical success of porcelain laminate veneers (PLVs) depends on many clinical and technical factors, from planning to execution, among which adhesive cementation is of significant importance. This procedure carries many risk factors if not optimally executed. The objective of this study was to document the clinical parameters affecting successful cementation procedures with a focus on the adhesive strength, integrity, and esthetics of the PLVs. A literature search was conducted through MEDLINE, complemented by a hand search using predefined keywords. Articles published in English between 1995 and 2023 were selected. According to this review, the success and longevity of PLVs rely in great part on the implementation of a precise cementation technique, starting from field isolation, adequate materials selection for adhesion, proper manipulation of the materials, the seating of the veneers, polymerization, and elimination of the excess cement. Several clinical steps performed before cementation, including treatment planning, preparation, impression, and adequate choice of the restorative material, could affect the quality of cementation. Scientific evidence suggests careful implementation of this process to achieve predictable outcomes with PLVs. The short- and long-term clinical success of adhesively luted PLVs is tributary to a deep understanding of the materials used and the implementation of clinical protocols. It is also contingent upon all the previous steps from case selection, treatment planning, and execution until and after the cementation.

Abstract
Frontal darkened teeth have shown to be one of the most challenging treatments for esthetic dentistry in recent years. This case report, along with a 30-month follow-up, describes the application of a partial ceramic veneer, restricted to the mid-cervical third region, made in the upper left central incisor darkened by trauma. The procedure consisted of maintenance of the entire incisal face, as well as esthetic and morphological rehabilitation of the smile line with veneers and ultra-thin partial ceramic veneers. The planning process was thoroughly elaborated by photographs, study models, a virtual smile designed, diagnostic waxing, and reproduction in the patient's mouth through mock-up. Following, dental home bleaching, esthetic gingival contouring, and minimally invasive tooth preparation were performed. Two types of glass ceramics (lithium disilicate and feldspathic) were used in different regions due to the peculiar characteristics of resistance, finishing, and polishing. According to the present case report, preparing a cervical partial ceramic veneer is an innovative, viable, and safe approach to maintaining the incisal portion of the tooth preserved and setting a detailed tooth morphology/color. The application of partial ceramic veneer provides incisal edge preservation and simplifies the reproduction of the adjacent tooth characteristics, avoiding multiple esthetic appointments.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the influence of printing orientation on color and translucency of 3D printing restorative resins. METHODS Four 3D printing resin systems in the available shades (DFT-Detax Freeprint Temp- A1, A2,A3; FP-Formlabs Permanent Crown- A2,A3,B1,C2; FT- Formlabs Temporary CB- A2,A3,B1,C2; GCT-GC Temporary- Light, Medium) were evaluated. Three samples (10×10×1.2 mm) from each material were printed at two different printing orientations (0° and 90°) and polished to 1.00 ± 0,01 mm of thickness. Spectral reflectance was measured against black background using a calibrated spectroradiometer, CIE D65 standard illuminant and the 45°/0°geometry. Color and translucency differences were evaluated using CIEDE2000 metric (ΔE00) and 50:50% perceptibility (PT00 and TPT00) and acceptability (AT00 and TAT00) thresholds. RESULTS In general, color changes due to printing orientation at (0° and 90°) were mainly produced by ΔL* or ΔC* . ΔE00 were above PT00 for all DFT shades, FP-B1, FP-C2, FT-A2 and FT-B1. Only for DFT-1, ΔE00 was above AT00. ΔRTP00 values were above TPT00 for DFT-A1, DFT-A3, FP-B1 and FT-B1, but lower than TAT00. The direction of the changes in translucency (ΔRTP00) depends on the material and shade. SIGNIFICANCE The selection of building orientation (0° and 90°) for the 3D printed resins influence the visual color and translucency and therefore their esthetic appearance. These aspects should be considered when printing dental restorations using the evaluated materials.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effects of background color, ceramic type and coping thickness on masking ability (ΔE) and translucency parameter (TP) of CAD/CAM lithium disilicate glass-ceramic/monolithic zirconia and, to determine the correlations between coping thickness, TP and ΔE. METHODS A total of 120 ceramic specimens (2 mm, 1 mm and 0.5 mm thickness; n = 10) of four CAD/CAM ceramics: IPS e.max, IPS ZirCAD, Upcera Li CAD and Upcera TT CAD, were studied. Specimens were tested over nine fabricated backgrounds: A1, A2, A3.5, ND2 and ND7 shade resin-based composites, cobalt-chromium alloy (CC), medium precious alloy (MPA), black (B) and white (W). CIELab values (L*, a* and b*), color difference (ΔE) and translucency parameter (TP) were measured and calculated using a digital spectrophotometer (color i7, X-Rite, Pantone®). Data were analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk test, one-way ANOVA, three-way ANOVA, independent t-tests and Tukey post-hoc tests (p < 0.05). RESULTS 2 mm CAD/CAM ceramics showed ideal color matching (ΔE<2.6) over different backgrounds, except for CC, B and W backgrounds. Monolithic zirconia had lower ΔE values than lithium disilicate glass-ceramics. ΔE and TP values significantly reduced with the increased coping thickness (p < 0.05). Regardless of ceramic type and thickness, a strong TP-SD of ΔE correlation was observed. SIGNIFICANCE CAD/CAM ceramic restoration color was significantly affected by background color, ceramic type and coping thickness. TP is a promising predictor for appropriate ceramic selection to receive an acceptable CAD/CAM ceramic restoration aesthetic.

Abstract
The color stability of resin cements plays a key role in the achievement of esthetically-pleasant restorations. Resin luting materials can be mainly divided into two main classes: adhesive (relying on previous application of adhesive systems) or self-adhesive (also known as one-step cements). The different chemical compositions determine their physio-mechanical characteristics which, in turns, influence their color stability. To evaluate the color variations of different dual-cured resin cements after water aging, 80 disc-shaped specimens (15 mm in diameter and 1.2 mm thick) were obtained from the following resin cements (n = 10): (1) Maxcem Elite Universal, MCU (Kerr); (2) RelyX Universal, RXU (3M); (3) Calibra Ceram, CAL (Dentsply); (4) Multilink, MUL (Ivoclar-Vivadent); (5) Panavia V5, PAN (Kuraray); (6) Calibra Universal, CUN (Dentsply); (7) SpeedCEM Plus, SCP (Ivoclar); and (8) Panavia SA, PSA (Kuraray). After light-polymerization, the specimens were measured with a spectrophotometer and CIELab* values were recorded. The specimens were then placed in a digitally controlled thermostatic water bath at 60° for 30 days and afterwards the color measurements were repeated. Color differences were calculated for each specimen before and after water-aging procedures with ΔEab formula and the data were statistically analyzed (p < 0.05). The type of cement statistically influenced the ΔEab (p < 0.05), with MCU showing the lowest color variations (4.3 ± 0.7) whereas RXU and PSA the highest (16.9 ± 1.6 and 16.8 ± 1.2, respectively). No differences were observed between CAL, CUN and SCP (p = 0.05). Color stability is related to the chemical composition of the resinous luting materials, thus material dependent.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the color changes of feldspathic ceramics CEREC Blocs (Dentsply Sirona, Milford, DE, USA) when cemented with different luting agents, while varying the ceramic thickness. Seventy ceramic discs of feldspathic ceramic (A2 shade) were obtained with 0.5 and 0.8 mm thicknesses. Seventy composite discs (A3 shade) 1 mm in thickness were used as substrates. After being polished and conditioned, the ceramic and composite discs were cemented with different resin cements and a flowable composite: Variolink® Esthetic Light, Neutral and Warm (Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein); RelyXTM Veneer B0.5, Translucent and A3 Opaque/yellow shades (3M Oral Care, St. Paul, MN, USA); G-aenial® Universal Flow A2 (GC Europe, Leuven, Belgium). Color difference (ΔE) was determined using a spectrophotometer. A two-way ANOVA and multiple comparisons were performed using the Bonferroni method with a 95% confidence interval. Variolink® Neutral showed the highest ΔE (15.12 ± 0.71) and RelyXTM Veneer A3 the lowest value (1.59 ± 0.33). There are no statistically significant differences between the two ceramic thicknesses for Variolink® Light (p = 0.230) and RelyXTM Veneer B0.5 (p = 0.318) cements. The feldspathic ceramic final color is influenced by the cement used and the ceramic thickness. The use of different cements in a thin ceramic has a clinically significant impact on the final esthetic result.

Abstract
Despite the advent of metal-free solutions, porcelain-fused-to-metal restorations (PFM) are still widely used. Particularly for the latest ceramic systems, scarce information is present in the scientific literature about the ideal opaque layer thickness and the alloy color impact to achieve the desired final color of PFM restorations. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of opaque thickness variation layered on different metal alloys on the final color of PFM restorations. Opaque porcelain of one metal−ceramic system (VITA VM13) was layered in four different thicknesses (0.10 mm, 0.15 mm, 0.20 mm, and 0.25 mm) on three differently colored dental alloys: a gold−platinum alloy (yellowish), a gold−palladium alloy (light grayish), and a nickel−chromium alloy (dark grayish). The veneering porcelain layered over the opaque was kept constant (Base Dentine 0.45 mm, Transpa Dentine 0.50 mm, and Enamel 0.20 mm). Sixty specimens were fabricated, five samples for each combination of alloy/opaque thickness. The color difference (ΔE) between specimen and reference was measured using a clinical spectrophotometer. The two-way ANOVA revealed that the thickness of both the opaque (p < 0.001) and the metal alloy (p < 0.001) significantly influenced the ΔE values. Gray-colored alloys covered by a 0.10 mm thick opaque layer enabled the closest color match, whereas this occurred for yellow-color alloys covered by a 0.15 mm thick opaque layer. In contrast, the samples covered by a 0.25 mm thick opaque layer obtained the worst ΔE.

Abstract
This study evaluated the background and effect of surrounding colors on the color blending of a single-shade composite used in a thin layer. Disc-shaped specimens (1.0 mm thickness) were built with the Vittra APS Unique composite surrounded (dual specimens) or not surrounded (simple specimens) by a control composite (shade A1, A2, or A3). Simple specimens were also built with only control composites. The specimen color was measured against white and black backgrounds with a spectrophotometer (CIELAB system). The whiteness index for dentistry (WID) was calculated for simple specimens. Differences (ΔE00) in color and translucency parameters (ΔTP00) between the simple/dual specimens and the controls were calculated. The translucency adjustment potential (TAP) and color adjustment potential (CAP) were estimated based on the ratios between data from simple and dual specimens. The Vittra APS Unique composite showed higher WID values than the controls. No differences between ΔTP00_SIMPLE and ΔTP00_DUAL were observed for any of the shades. The composite shade did not affect TAP values. The lowest values of ΔE00_SIMPLE and ΔE00_DUAL were observed for shade A1 regardless of the background color. For the white background, ΔE00_SIMPLE values did not differ from those of ΔE00_DUAL for all shades. Only A1 showed ΔE00_DUAL values lower than ΔE00_SIMPLE when the black background was used. The highest modulus of CAP (negative values for the white background) was observed when shade A1 surrounded the Vittra APS Unique composite. The color blending ability of the single-shade resin composite used in a thin layer was affected by both the surrounding shade and background color.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The color of the titanium abutment can affect the shade of the definitive restoration. Methods such as anodic oxidation, which changes the gray color of implant abutment to yellow, have been advocated to mask the unesthetic gray color of the abutment. However, whether a yellow anodized titanium abutment can prevent discoloration of translucent ceramic restorations is uncertain. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of the yellow anodization of titanium on the shade of lithium disilicate ceramic with different thicknesses by using CIEDE 2000 formulas. MATERIAL AND METHODS Sixty grade V titanium backgrounds were fabricated and divided into 2 test groups (n=30): group A was anodized to a yellow color, and group U was unanodized. Each group was subdivided into 3 subgroups (n=10) according to the thickness of the lithium disilicate ceramic cemented over it: subgroup 1 with 1-mm-thick lithium disilicate, subgroup 1.5 with 1.5-mm-thick lithium disilicate, and subgroup 2 with 2-mm-thick lithium disilicate. Each titanium background was cemented to its corresponding lithium disilicate block by using translucent resin cement. For the control group, 5-mm-thick lithium disilicate specimens were fabricated. Color measurements of the specimens were made with a spectrophotometer, and differences were calculated by using CIEDE 2000 formulas (ΔE00). Comparisons between the 2 study groups were done by using independent samples t test. Two-way ANOVA was used to assess the effect of anodization and thickness on ΔE00 with calculation of adjusted means and 95% confidence intervals (α=.05). RESULTS Statistically significant differences were found among the mean values between yellow anodized and unanodized groups in all ceramic thicknesses (P<.001 for 1 mm, P<.001 for 1.5 mm, and P<.046 for 2 mm). Yellow anodization of titanium and increasing the ceramic thickness from 1 to 2 mm decreased the ΔE00 values. CONCLUSIONS The restoration shade appeared to be improved by titanium anodization to a yellow color and by increasing the thickness of the machinable high-translucent lithium disilicate.

Abstract
This study aimed to comprehensively evaluate the effect of dual-cured resin luting agents with different initiator systems on the color stability of glass ceramic restorations by simulating various clinical glass ceramic restorations. Three commonly used shades from each of the two dual-cured resin luting agents with an amine-initiation system or without it were studied. The individual specimens had different translucency and thickness and were artificially aged using a xenon light aging machine. The color was measured before and after aging using a digital spectrophotometer with the difference calculated and analyzed statistically. As results, the amine-free dual-cured resin luting agents were more color stable than those using amine-initiation systems for both uncovered and bonding groups. The translucency and thickness of the ceramic, and shade and type of the resin luting agent significantly affected the color stability of glass ceramic restorations.

Abstract
Background The ceramics industry produces porcelain pastes using a controlled ratio of water and porcelain powder. Two methods are used to produce a dental porcelain paste: one-step mixing or incremental mixing. Objective To evaluate the optical properties of a feldspathic dental ceramic using two different ceramic paste preparation methods using a Bayesian approach. Materials and Methods Two groups of feldspathic porcelain discs, an incremental mixing group (n = 40) and a one-step mixing group (n = 40), were assessed. Groups were evaluated using spectrophotometry, and the translucency parameter (TP) of each sample was calculated. Surfaces were characterized by AFM and SEM. Statistical analysis was performed using a Bayesian approach. Results Translucency parameter values of the incremental mixing group ranged from 1.65 to 3.41, while values for the one-step mixing group ranged from 3.62 to 5.74, this difference being statistically significant. The lowest roughness was obtained on the surface of discs in the one-step mixing group. Conclusions Feldspathic porcelain with lower translucency and higher roughness was obtained using the incremental mixture method.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate color changes in milled feldspathic porcelain laminate veneers following hydrofluoric acid etching (HFA), sandblasting (SB), or Er:YAG laser irradiation (LI). METHODS AND MATERIALS Disc-shaped specimens (thickness=1 mm, diameter=8 mm) were milled from feldspathic porcelain blocks (n=40). Glazed specimens were randomly assigned to four subgroups (n=10 each) according to surface treatment: negative control, HFA, SB, and LI. A layer of translucent, light-cured resin cement (thickness=0.1 mm) was then applied following silanization. The color was characterized by the L*, a*, and b* uniform color space (CIE) using a reflection spectrophotometer. CIEDE2000 (ΔE00) was calculated to determine the color difference between each surface treatment and negative control groups. Data were statistically analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), Kruskal-Wallis, and Dunn-Bonferroni post hoc tests. RESULTS There were no significant differences in CIEL* and CIEb* coordinates between negative control and all surface treatment groups (p≥0.108). The SB group demonstrated significantly lower mean CIEa* (higher greenish hue) compared to other groups (p≤0.003). HFA exhibited significantly higher CIEa* (closer to red) when compared to LI (p=0.039). LI induced the smallest overall color change compared to negative control (ΔE00=1.43 [1.07]). However, the differences in ΔE00 values were not statistically significant (p=0.648). CONCLUSIONS The tested surface treatments did not affect the lightness or the yellowness of the 1-mm-thick milled feldspathic porcelain veneers. However, sandblasting resulted in a significant increase in the greenish hue. The Er:YAG laser resulted in the closest ΔE00 (1.43) to the 50:50% perceptibility threshold (ΔE00=1.2).

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcome of feldspathic ceramic laminate veneers over a 7-year period using minimally invasive techniques, such as vertical preparation (without prosthetic finish line), or no preparation (no-prep). A total of 170 feldspathic ceramic veneers were cemented in the anterior region, including 70 maxillary and 100 mandibular veneers, after special conditioning of the teeth and restorations. The veneers were evaluated using the FDI World Dental Federation criteria evaluation kit after recalling all the patients between February and June 2021. In total, 14 feldspathic veneers failed and were replaced with lithium disilicate because of core fracture, and 10 cases of chipping occurred on the ceramic surface and were polished. The overall survival rate was 91.77% for up to 7 years of function, with a failure rate of 8.23%. In this retrospective survival analysis, the failures, including the fracture of veneers and dental hard tissue, occurred both in prep and no-prep teeth. No failures were observed in veneers with a maximum thickness of 0.5 mm compared to those with a maximum thickness of 1 mm, 1.5 mm, 2 mm, and 2.5 mm.

Abstract
An outstanding treatment challenge related to aesthetic monolithic materials is to mask discolored substrates in aesthetic areas. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the substrate masking ability of different resin composite materials and the influence of their association with luting agents and substrates. Five types of 2M2 HT (high translucency) resin composite materials were selected: Vita Enamic [E] and four types of nanoparticle-filled composites Lava Ultimate [L], Cerasmart [C], Shofu HC [S], and Hyramic [H]. Resin composite Vita VM LC with different shades was used for the substrates: 2M2, 3M2, and CP2. Variolink Esthetic Try-inpastes neutral, light+, and warm+ colors were chosen to simulate the luting agent color. Optical parameters (TP (translucency), CR (contrast ratio), and OP (opalesce)) and color differences ΔE (chromatic difference) were calculated. Statistical analyses were performed to evaluate the comparisons between the groups and establish correlations. TP average values for all materials were in the range of 21.49–24.53. OP average values were in the rage of 6.31–7.85. OP is moderate positive correlated to TP and CR is negative and strong correlated to TP. Related to materials, average color changes decrease as following: E > H > C > L > S. Referring to the tryin material, warm colors induce marked color changes of the restoration. The differences of the color changes determined by all studied substrates are significant. For the final aesthetic aspect of the restoration, it is essential to consider the underlying dental structure, luting agent, and restoration material as a whole unit. The masking ability of the investigated resin matrix ceramic materials materials shows differences, the best behavior demonstrated Shofu HC and Lava Ultimate. Marked color changes are related to high chroma substrates. For substrates with a darker color, the association with warm try-in pastes lead to marked color changes, but with neutral and light try-in pastes at most perceivable.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of stain brand and color on color stability of stains on a CAD-CAM ceramic after aging. Specimens (15 × 8 × 1.5 mm) were fabricated from A2-shade ceramic blocks (Mark II; Vita Zahnfabrik) (N = 120). Specimens were divided into two groups (n = 10) to be stained with six different stains (yellow, orange, blue, gray, violet, and brown) from two manufacturers (GC initial spectrum (GC) and IPS e.max Ceram (IPS)). Aging was performed for 5 h at 134 °C. Color coordinates before and after aging were measured to calculate color differences (ΔE00). Kubelka-Munk absorption (K) and scattering coefficients (S) of stains were compared with those of A2 shade tab. Two-way ANOVA was used to analyze the ΔE00 values and Tamhane T2 was used to analyze the K and S coefficients (alpha = 0.05). A significant interaction was found between stain color and brand (p < 0.001). Color changes with IPS stains were higher than those with GC stains except for brown. The highest color difference was with orange stain of IPS (p < 0.001). Absorption and scattering coefficients of different stains on CAD-CAM ceramic were different from those of A2 shade tab except for brown stain (p < 0.001). Tested stains on CAD-CAM ceramic had varying color changes after aging. Color of gray, violet and brown of both stains was stable. Yellow, orange, and blue GC stains were more color stable compared with IPS. Absorption and scattering coefficients of stains in different colors varied.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study is to evaluate the color changes of lithium disilicate ceramics when cemented with different brands of cement by varying the thickness of the ceramic. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty ceramic discs, shade A2, were fabricated with 0.5 and 0.8 mm thickness. Forty composite resin discs, shade A3, were also produced. The ceramic samples were cemented to the composite resin discs, with two colors of resin cement, Neutral and Warm. A spectrophotometer evaluation was made. Translucency and color change analysis was performed by calculating the ΔE. A two-way analysis of variance test and multiple comparisons were performed using the Bonferroni method with a 95% confidence interval. RESULTS There are statistically significant differences between the two ceramic thicknesses with different brands of cement (p < .001). In addition, using the translucency analysis it was found that there are statistically significant differences between the two ceramic thicknesses in both types of cement (p < .001). CONCLUSIONS The use of different cementation materials on lithium disilicate ceramics appears to have little visible influence at the clinical level. Different ceramic thicknesses have a clinically visible influence on the final restoration color.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evaluate the influence of thickness and opacity on the ability of composite resin and ceramic veneer restorations to mask discolored teeth. METHODS Ninety veneers were made of lithium disilicate ceramic, shades BL1 and 0 (IPS e.max Press, Ivoclar Vivadent), and 60 were made of composite resin, shade BL-L (IPS Empress Direct, Ivoclar Vivadent). The veneers measured 4 mm in width x 4 mm in length and had a thickness of 0.7, 1.0, or 1.2 mm. One hundred and fifty human premolars were selected to obtain 150 dental fragments with the following dimensions: 4 mm x 4 mm x 3 mm (width x length x thickness). The fragments were discolored, submitted to color measurement and randomly assigned to 15 groups (n=10) according to the type and opacity of the restorative material (IPS e.max Press: high translucency [HT], low translucency [LT], and medium opacity [MO]; IPS Empress Direct: dentin and enamel) and thickness of the veneers (0.7, 1.0, and 1.2 mm). After cementation of the ceramic or composite resin veneers using a translucent resin cement (RelyX veneer, 3M), a final color measurement was taken from each specimen and the total color variation (ΔE) was calculated by subtracting the initial and the final color measurement. The final lightness (L*) of the restored dental fragments was also calculated. RESULTS The highest ΔE values were observed for the LT and MO ceramic groups, followed by dentin composite resin. Regarding the different thicknesses of ceramic veneers, every 1.2-mm-thick group had higher values of ΔE, considering their respective opacities (p<0.05). The highest lightness values were found for the LT and MO ceramic veneers (thickness of 1.2 mm). Dentin-shade composite resins showed similar lightness values in all groups. CONCLUSION The best thickness/opacity combinations for masking discolored dental substrates were LT and MO ceramic veneers with 1.2-mm thickness. Dentin-shade composite resin veneers with a thickness of 0.7-1.0 mm showed good ability to mask discolored dental substrates.

Abstract
Background/purpose Among the ceramic materials used for all-ceramic crowns, zirconia has high biocompatibility and favorable mechanical properties, but its main drawbacks include low translucency and stress-induced phase transformation. To stabilize high-strength tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (TZP), 3–5 mol% yttria is usually added to prepare yttria-stabilized TZP (Y-TZP). In this study, the optical properties of three commercial Y-TZP ceramics were compared with those of the clinically available glass-ceramic material of lithium disilicate, and the relationship between translucency and crystal properties was analyzed in vitro. Materials and methods Twelve 5-mm-thick standardized disks were prepared from three Y-TZP ceramics and one lithium disilicate block. Absolute translucency was measured using a spectrophotometer with an integrating sphere. X-ray diffraction was used to quantify the main structural parameters (i.e., preferred plane, quantitative phase, and grain size) of Y-TZP crystals. Results The product-dominated phase of Y-TZP exhibited a tetragonal lattice pattern, and the preferred planes had minor variations. The diffraction patterns of the three Y-TZP ceramics demonstrated minor effects on translucency, without significant differences (p > 0.05). The grain size of 54–70 nm was negatively related to translucency in Y-TZP. Lithium disilicate specimens had significantly higher translucency than the three Y-TZP specimens (p < 0.001). Conclusion Grain size reduction played an essential role in developing highly translucent Y-TZP ceramics. The three Y-TZP ceramics were essentially opaque but exhibited poorer translucency than lithium disilicate in terms of esthetics.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of thickness, cement shade, and coffee thermocycling (CTC) on the optical properties of zirconia reinforced lithium silicate (ZLS) paired with different shades of a resin cement. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty ZLS specimens were prepared in two different thicknesses (0.8 and 1.5 mm) and three different resin cement shades (Tr, A2, and A3) were applied (n = 5). Color determinations were done before and after 5000 CTC by using a noncontact spectroradiometer. Color change due to CTC and relative translucency parameter (RTP) before and after CTC were calculated by using CIEDE2000. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Bonferroni-corrected t-tests(α = 0.05). RESULTS Material thickness and resin cement shade (P < 0.001) affected baseline color. Material thickness affected color difference (P = 0.025). Thickness, resin cement shade, and CTC (P ≤ 0.0001) affected RTP. The difference between the color changes of the 0.8- and 1.5-mm specimens combined with A2 shade cement after CTC was significant (P = 0.01). RTPs of all pairs decreased after CTC (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Cement shade and material thickness affected the baseline color. The thickness of ZLS affected the color change after CTC only with A2 resin cement and the color change was less when the ZLS was thicker. CTC reduced the translucency of all pairs. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Clinicians and patients should be aware of a potential color change after long-term coffee consumption when zirconia reinforced lithium silicate is used particularly for laminate veneers with A2 shade of the tested resin cement.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the tooth portion evaluated and the colors of the abutment tooth and resin luting agent on the final color of monolithic zirconia crowns. METHODS Monolithic zirconia crowns were fabricated for left maxillary central incisors using two shades (A2 and A3) of highly translucent monolithic zirconia disks. A model of the abutment tooth was fabricated using resin core materials (white: W; dentin: D). The color of the crowns was measured with try-in pastes (clear: C; brown: B) as a resin-luting agent substitute. The measurement was performed after placing the crown on the model with the attached abutment tooth with try-in paste. The color of three labial portions (cervical, body, and incisal) was evaluated using a dental spectrophotometer. The color difference (ΔE) between the CIELab values of the zirconia disks and the final me asurement of zirconia crowns was calculated. RESULTS The ΔE between the crown of the A2 shade and the zirconia disk of the A2 shade had the highest ΔE value in the body portion with W-B (ΔE=3.92). Similarly, the A3 shade had the highest ΔE value in the cervical portion, with W-B (ΔE=4.27). The results of three-way ANOVA showed that the ΔE values were influenced by the tooth portion evaluated and the color of the abutment tooth. CONCLUSIONS The final color of the monolithic zirconia crowns was significantly in fluenced by the tooth portion evaluated and the color of the abutment tooth.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM With the different translucency levels and types of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) ceramic materials, choosing the most appropriate CAD-CAM ceramic materials to better reproduce the color appearance of natural teeth can be challenging. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to analyze the color differences between natural teeth and milled veneers fabricated with the different types of CAD-CAM ceramic materials. MATERIAL AND METHODS Ten extracted maxillary central incisor teeth with the A2 shade in the body region were prepared for ceramic veneers. The veneer restorations were designed by using the duplicating method and fabricated from 9 milling blocks (IPS e.max CAD HT/LT, Lava Ultimate CAD HT/LT, VITA SUPRINITY HT/T, IPS Empress CAD HT/LT/Multi) in a dental milling unit (n=10). The bonding surface of the abutment tooth was coated with a thin layer of a separating agent, and the veneer specimen with resin cement was then bonded to the corresponding abutment tooth. A clinical spectrophotometer was used to measure the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage Lab values of natural teeth, abutment teeth, and milled veneers in the cervical, body, and incisal regions. Color differences between the natural tooth and A2 shade tab (ΔE1) and between the milled veneer and natural tooth (ΔE2) were calculated. The ΔE2 values were compared with the perceptibility threshold (ΔE=2.6) and acceptability threshold (ΔE=5.5). The paired-samples t test, 1-way analysis of covariance, and 2-way ANOVA were used to analyze data (α=.05). RESULTS The results of 1-way analysis of covariance showed that ceramic materials significantly affected the a∗ and b∗ values of the milled veneers (P<.001) but did not affect the L∗ values of the milled veneers (P>.05). The results of 2-way ANOVA indicated that the ΔE2 values were not significantly affected by different CAD-CAM ceramic materials (F=1.560, P=.138), while statistically significant differences were found in the veneer regions (F=6.588, P=.002). The ΔE2 values ranged from 2.41 to 5.36, less than the clinically acceptable color threshold of 5.5. CONCLUSIONS The color parameters of milled veneers were affected by the different types of CAD-CAM ceramic materials. The color of the veneer restoration was able to match that of the natural tooth.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aims to evaluate the effects of cement shade, restorative material type, and thickness on the final color of resin-matrix ceramics. METHODS Ninety A2 shade resin-matrix ceramic specimens were prepared from Vita Enamic, GC Cerasmart, and Lava Ultimate at 0.5 and 1.0 mm thicknesses. Sixty resin cement disks were fabricated from different shades (A1, A3O, B05, and TR) of RelyX Ultimate at 0.1 mm thickness. CIE color coordinates were measured using a spectrophotometer, and color differences (∆ E 00 ) were calculated. Data were statistically analyzed (P =0.05). RESULTS The ΔE 00 values were influenced by the cement shade, restorative material type, thickness, and their interactions ( P < 0.05). A3O cement caused clinically unacceptable values for all groups at 0.5 mm thickness and GC at 1.0 mm thickness. A1 and TR cement shades demonstrated visually perceptible but clinically acceptable values, except for VE-A1 and LU-A1 at 0.5 mm thickness. The ∆E 00 values of the B05 cement shade were lower than the visually perceptible threshold for both thicknesses except for GC at 0.5 mm thickness. CONCLUSIONS The shade of the resin cement and the type and thickness of the resin-matrix ceramic material significantly affected the resulting final color. To provide a shade matching with natural dentition and to obtain esthetic restorations, especially for the anterior teeth, the resin cement shade and resin-matrix ceramic material should be carefully selected.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of surface treatments on optical, colorimetric, and surface characteristics of lithium disilicate glass-ceramic. MATERIALS AND METHODS Specimens (n = 5, IPS e.max CAD) were randomly allocated to the following treatments: mirror-polished: SiC papers; as-cut: mimicking CAD-CAM milling; ground: 90-120 μm-grit diamond bur; ground polished: ground, finished (46-30 μm-grit diamond bur), polished (diamond cups, brush and diamond paste); ground glazed: ground, glazed; ground polished glazed: association of methods. CIELAB color coordinates were obtained by a spectrophotometer. CIEDE2000 color differences (ΔE00 ) and the translucency parameter (TP00 ) were calculated. Light transmittance was assessed with a colorimeter. Surface characteristics (topography and roughness) were analyzed. Statistical differences for each condition and outcome were detected using one-way ANOVA with Tukey's post-hoc test (α = 0.05). RESULTS TP00 data show statistical reduction after grinding (p < 0.05), which was only restored with polishing (solely or with glazing). ΔE00 shows that grinding results in perceptible variations in color (above 0.81), which were restored after all post-processing protocols (exception to only glaze application in contact with a black background). Light transmittance data corroborated such performance. Polishing and glazing reduced roughness and improved surface topography. CONCLUSION Grinding statistically increased roughness, reduced translucency, light transmittance through the ceramic, and resulted on color differences. On contrary, polishing (followed or not by glazing) reduced roughness and enhanced ceramic translucency and light transmittance. Glaze also reduced roughness, but it still presented reduced translucency. The positioning (facing up or down) of the ceramic treated surface influenced the considered outcomes. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Grinding with diamond burs results in a deleterious impact to the optical, colorimetric and surface characteristics of lithium disilicate ceramic. Thus, polishing (followed or not by glazing) is recommended for optical and topographical enhancements when lithium disilicate monolithic restorations require occlusal adjustments.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To conduct a systematic review on the masking ability of discolored substrates, analyzing the capacity and quality of the response produced by the different methodologies and techniques applied to overcome this clinical challenge. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. The electronic search was conducted in MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases, without date restriction. In vitro studies, written in English, applying different methodologies to evaluate masking ability were included. The variables of interest were: type, color and thickness of the restorative and/or cement material; use of pigments in the restorative material and/or cement; color of the substrate; and background color used for the evaluations. RESULTS Database search retrieved 307 eligible papers with a final inclusion of 47 published papers. Approximately 98% of the studies used ΔE, 36% used TP, and only 6% used CR to evaluate the masking ability of restorative materials. CONCLUSIONS The most appropriate methodology to evaluate the masking ability is using color difference equations (ΔE) associated with the perceptibility and acceptability thresholds. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE As different methodologies have been used to evaluate the masking ability of esthetic restorative materials on colored substrates, there is an urgent need to reach a consensus and propose a method, which is suggested by the present systematic review.

Specimens of 0.6, 0.9, 1.2, 1.5 and 2.0-mm thickness (n = 3/group, 615 total) were prepared. Translucency (TP) and Relative Translucency (RTP) Parameters were calculated from spectroradiometric color readings. Effects of shade and thickness for a given system were statistically analyzed using MANOVA and Tukey post-hoc multiple comparisons tests. Translucency variations were assessed comparatively with literature-based perceptibility and acceptability thresholds. RESULTS TP/RTP values of all ceramic materials decreased with increasing thickness. The most translucent specimens were 0.6-mm thick ECAD HT-A3.5 (TP = 31.99) and ECAD HT-C2 (RTP = 23.75), while the least translucent was 2-mm thick Enamic T-3 M2 (TP = 7.27; RTP = 4.79). Thickness and material type significantly influenced translucency (p < 0.001). Noritake and ECAD LT showed similar translucency values, as well as Suprinity HT and ECAD LT. CONCLUSIONS For ceramic restorations thicker than 0.9-mm, any thickness increase of 0.3-0.5 mm produces a perceptible but clinically acceptable translucency variation. Increases in thickness larger than 0.6-mm will result in an unacceptable translucency shift. Dental practitioners need to recognize key factors that influence translucency of ceramic restorations in order to choose the optimal material, shade, translucency, and thickness suitable for different clinical scenarios. While shade plays a minor role in translucency variation, ceramic type and restoration thickness significantly affect overall translucency.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of mouth rinses on the color and translucency of three computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) restorative materials in laminate veneer and crown thicknesses. METHODS Specimens from two different 5Y-TZP zirconia (InCoris TZI (IT), and Zirkonzahn (ZH)) and lithium disilicate (IPS e.max CAD [IC]) in two different thicknesses (0.7 mm for laminate veneer, and 1.5 mm for crown) were sectioned. All specimens were colored with an A2-shade liquid, and the baseline color values were recorded according to the CIELab system with a spectrophotometer. Each group was divided into two subgroups (n = 15) according to the immersion solution: two different mouth rinses, KL (Klorhex), and LI (Listerine, cool mint) for 180 hours. The color coordinates (L*, a*, b*) of the specimens were measured before and after immersion in a mouth rinse, and TP and ΔE00 color differences were calculated by using the CIEDE2000 color difference formula. A 3-way ANOVA, Bonferroni test, and 1-sample t tests were used to analyze the data (α = 0.05). RESULTS The 3-way ANOVA revealed a significant interaction of material, thickness, and mouth rinse for translucency parameter and color difference (ΔE00 ) data (p < 0.001). TP decreased for both zirconia materials in laminate veneer thickness when immersed in LI mouth rinse (p < 0.05). No difference was found among the TP mean values of three materials in crown thickness after immersed in mouth rinses (p > 0.826). Both zirconia materials immersed in LI showed greater discoloration than after immersed in KL (p < 0.05). A significant difference was found in color change values among three materials for the laminate veneer thickness after immersed in LI (p < 0.001). However, all color difference values were within the clinical acceptability threshold, except for when ZH in laminate veneer thickness was immersed in LI. CONCLUSIONS The color change of ZH zirconia with LI mouth rinse in laminate veneer thickness was high. For both zirconia ceramics, translucency decreased and the color was less stable in laminate veneer thickness after immersed in LI compared to the crown thickness. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The results of this in vitro study suggest that long-term use of alcohol-containing mouth rinse may alter the optical properties of tested CAD-CAM materials in tested laminate veneer thickness. For color stability with the long term use of tested mouth rinses, lithium disilicate may be preferred for both types of restorations.

Abstract
Statement of the problem Long-term success of ceramic veneers depends on the color stability of resin cement used for their cementation. Color change of cement may be seen through the ceramic and compromise esthetics. Purpose This study aimed to compare the color change of two resin cements and their visibility through the ceramic veneers after accelerated artificial aging. Materials and methods In this in vitro study, color change (ΔE) was measured in the following groups (n = 10) before and after accelerated artificial aging: group 1, IPS e.max press high translucent ceramic discs; groups 2, Variolink NLC resin cement discs; group 3, Choice 2 resin cement discs; groups 4, Variolink NLC discs bonded to e.max ceramic discs; group 5, Choice 2 disc bonded to e.max ceramic discs. Color change was measured using a spectrophotometer according to International Commission on Illumination Lab (CIELab). Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey’s post-hoc test. Results Group 2 showed the highest (ΔE = 10.4 ± 0.9) and group 1 the lowest (ΔE = 0.9 ± 0.4) color change. The color change of Variolink was significantly greater than Choice 2 either alone (p < .001) or through the ceramic discs (p < .004). The color change of both cements was lower through the ceramic veneer and this reduction was statistically significant (p < .001). Conclusion Noticeable color change may be expected in areas of cement exposure for both cements studied. Also, in case of using Variolink cement, the color change may be seen through the ceramic veneers.

Abstract
Translucent zirconia, manufactured by increasing the yttria content, offers improved translucency, but may have a negative effect on esthetic outcomes under clinical conditions such as discolored abutment because of the reflection of the underlying color. The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the translucency parameter and masking ability of 3 mol % yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP (Katana HT)), 4Y-ZP (Katana STML), and 5Y-ZP (Katana UTML) with those of lithium disilicate (Rosetta SM). Zirconia and lithium disilicate specimens of 10 mm diameters and 0.8 and 1.5 mm thicknesses were fabricated. Their CIE L*a*b* values (L*, brightness; a*, red-green value; b*, yellow-blue value) were measured at the center of the specimens against black and white backgrounds using a spectrophotometer, and translucency parameter (TP) values were determined. The microstructure of the specimens was observed using scanning electron microscopy. Four cylindrical backgrounds of different shades were prepared. The zirconia and lithium disilicate specimens were placed on the backgrounds without any intervening medium. CIE L*a*b* values were obtained, and the color difference value (ΔE) was calculated. Thresholds for acceptability and perceptibility were assumed as ΔE = 5.5 and ΔE = 2.6, respectively, to evaluate masking ability. Data were compared using one-way analysis of variance and post-hoc was performed using Scheffe's test (α = 0.05). In zirconia specimens, the TP value increased as the yttria content increased from 3 mol %, through 4 mol % to 5 mol %, and all zirconia specimens showed lower TP values than lithium disilicate specimens did. All zirconia specimens showed optimal masking ability against a normal dentin shade (ND3) and acceptable masking ability against titanium at a minimum thickness of 1.5 mm. However, no zirconia specimen could mask severely discolored dentin (ND9), regardless of thickness. The decrease in zirconia thickness from 1.5 to 0.8 mm significantly increased translucency. Monolithic Y-TZP ceramics could mask a normal dentin background but could not mask severely discolored dentin at either 0.8 or 1.5 mm thicknesses.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the influence of the substrate and the cement on the final color of ceramic crowns. METHODS Prosthetic crowns (framework + porcelain) were fabricated using two all-ceramic systems (YZ, 3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia; IZ, alumina-based zirconia-reinforced glass-infiltrated ceramic) and a metal-ceramic system (MC; n = 8). Metal (M) and resin (R) were used as substrate abutments. For R substrate, crowns were evaluated as seated (R) and after cementation (R-C). CIELAB color coordinates were obtained using a dental spectrophotometer with D65 light illumination. CIELAB, CIEDE2000 (1:1:1) and CIEDE2000 (2:1:1) color difference metrics were used. Data were analyzed using 95% confidence intervals and compared to perceptibility (PT) and acceptability (AT) thresholds. RESULTS The ∆ E ab * , ∆E00 (1 : 1 : 1), and ∆E00 (2 : 1 : 1) values of the restorative systems evaluated using different substrates (M.R) were similar to the AT values of each metric. When non-cemented and cemented crowns were evaluated (R.R-C), MC had color difference values at PT and below AT; while YZ and IZ showed similar values to AT, for ∆ E ab * and ∆E00 (1 : 1 : 1) metrics. CONCLUSION The substrate and cement affected the final color of zirconia-based all-ceramic crowns, but the color differences corresponded to an acceptable match. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE As both substrate and cement influence the final color of multi-layered ceramic prosthesis, dentists and dental technicians should understand the optical properties of dental ceramics to reproduce the natural appearance of dental structures and maximize the chance for excellent color matches.

Abstract
Background:
Proper selection of cement plays an effective role in the success of ceramic laminate veneers. The cement can affect the final color by changing the optical properties of the ceramic.
Objective:
Due to the ease of clinical use of the seventh generation of cement (Self-Adhesive Cement), this study aimed to evaluate the effect of this type of cement on the final color of Ceramic Veneers (CV).
Methods:
In this study, 21 IPS e.max ceramic disks (8mm× 0.7 mm) were used. They were divided into 3 groups of 7, depending on the type of cement. (Choice 2, RelyX U200, Speed Cem). In the first stage, ceramic disks were set on the facial surface of bovine’s teeth by bonding agents and the color properties were analyzed by spectrophotometer. In the next stage, specimens were cemented on the prepared surfaces according to the manufacturer’s instructions and their color was evaluated subsequently.
Results:
Results were analyzed by repeated measures two-way ANOVA and TAMHANE post hoc methods (P < 0.05). Results showed that cement influences the color of the ceramic laminate. ∆E values were reported to be higher than the critical point after cementation (∆E > 2.69).
Conclusion:
There was no significant difference between the effects of three cement types on the final color of the ceramic veneers.

Abstract
Objectives This study aimed to evaluate the influence of different shades and brands of resin-based luting agents on the final color of a leucite-reinforced veneering ceramic. Methods This in-vitro study was done on 36 ceramic discs (IPS Empress I, 11 × 0.5 mm, A2 shade) and 36 cement disks (11 × 0.2 mm) made of Panavia SA Cement Plus (Kuraray Medical Inc.) and Choice2 (Bisco Inc., Schumburg) brands in translucent, universal A2, and opaque shades (n = 6 per each color in each resin cement brand). Color parameters (CIEL*a*b*) of ceramic specimens were calculated without and with each brand/shade of resin-based luting agents by using a spectrophotometer, and put into CIELab formula. The color differences (ΔE) between the two sets of measurements were calculated and analyzed with two-way ANOVA and Tukey’s post hoc test (α = 0.05). Results Both the resin-based luting agent shade (P < 0.001) and brand (P = 0.023) significantly affected the color differences. ΔE values were significantly different between Panavia-opaque and Choice2-opaque (P < 0.001). No significant difference existed between ΔE of the two brands in A2 (P = 0.178) and translucent shades (P = 0.079). The ΔE values of Panavia-A2 was significantly different from the translucent and opaque shades of the same brand. Moreover, the ΔE of Choice2-translucent shade was significantly lower than that of A2 and opaque shades. The ΔE values were higher than the clinically-acceptable threshold in all groups (ΔE > 3.7) except for Choice2-translucent (ΔE = 3.37). Conclusions The final color of leucite-reinforced veneering ceramic can be affected by the same shades of resin-based luting agents from different brands and different shades of resin-based luting agents from the same brand.
