Abstract
This study investigated the effect of rosmarinic acid (RA) on the immediate microtensile bond strength (µTBS) of 1-step self-etch adhesive to artificial caries-affected dentine (CAD), with or without NaOCl treatment. Dentine surfaces of 60 premolars were subjected to pH-cycling for artificial caries induction. Samples were randomly categorized into: NaOClRA group treated with 6% NaOCl and RA, RA group treated with RA solution, NaOCl group treated with 6% NaOCl, and untreated control group. Surface morphology was evaluated using SEM. Following bonding and composite placement, the specimens were sectioned into 1 mm2 beams after 24 h of water storage, then µTBS test was done. Failure modes were assessed under stereomicroscope. There was significant increase in the µTBS of NaOClRA compared to NaOCl group (p=0.001). RA group showed significant increase in µTBS compared to NaOCl and control groups, (p<0.001, p=0.009 respectively). In conclusion, RA improved the µTBS to CAD with or without NaOCl treatment.

Abstract
This study investigates the effects of dentin's drying time, roughness, and curing modes of resin cement on bond strength. Forty human teeth were divided into eight groups based on three experimental factors: dentin's roughness by 240-or 600-grit SiC paper (coarse or fine), dentin wetness with air-drying time (5-s or 10-s), and Single Bond Universal adhesive's curing mode by co-curing with RelyX Ultimate cement or light-curing separately (co-curing or light-curing). The micro-tensile bond strength of fifteen resin-dentin stikcs per groups was measured. Failure mode and adhesive layers were observed using stereoscopic and confocal laser scanning microscopy, respectively. The curing mode of the adhesive layer affected the bond strength of the dentin-resin cement (p<0.05). In particular, the light-curing mode exhibited a significantly higher bond strength than the co-curing one (p<0.05). The bond strength between the resin cement and dentin was improved in the 5-s drying groups than in the 10-s drying groups.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This double-blind, split mouth randomized clinical trial aimed to assess the clinical performance of Clearfil Universal Bond Quick (CBUq) universal adhesive under different application times (no waiting and waiting) compared to Clearfil SE Bond adhesive in non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) over 18 months. METHODS One hundred and eighty-three restorations were distributed randomly into three groups based on the adhesive system and waiting time: CUBq without waiting time (CUBq-NW), CUBq with a 20 s waiting time (CUBq-W), and CSE with a 20 s waiting time. After placement, restorations were evaluated after 18 months using the International Dental Federation (FDI) and United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria. Statistical analyses involved Friedman repeated measures analysis of variance and Wilcoxon tests, with a significance level set at 5 %. RESULTS Over the 18-month period, no restorations were lost across the tested groups. Marginal adaptation evaluation indicated minor discrepancies in 21 restorations (8 CUBq-NW, 6 CUBq-W, and 7 CSE). There were no significant differences observed among the three groups following the 18-month clinical assessment (p > 0.05). Only two restorations showed marginal discoloration after 18 months (1 CUBq-NW and 1 CSE). CONCLUSIONS The application of Clearfil Universal Bond Quick using either the "waiting" or "no-waiting" technique exhibited excellent clinical results in NCCLs during the 18-month follow-up period, demonstrating comparable performance to Clearfil SE Bond in all assessed outcomes. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The findings suggest that the new universal adhesive applied using the no-waiting technique demonstrates promising clinical performance when compared to conventional application methods. Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of simplified adhesive strategies (self-etch vs selective enamel etch and 10- vs 20-second adhesive application time) on the marginal integrity in primary molars. METHODS Forty deep class-II cavities were prepared in 40 extracted primary molars. The molars were divided into 4 groups based on the applied universal adhesive strategy as follows: groups 1 and 2: selective enamel etch with 20- or 10-second application time and groups 3 and 4: self-etch with 20- or 10-second application time. All cavities were restored with a sculptable bulk-fill composite restoration. The restorations underwent a thermomechanical loading (TML, 5-50 °C, 2-minute dwelling time, ×1000; 400,000 loading cycles, 1.7 Hz, 49 N). Marginal analysis before and after TML was conducted with scanning electron microscopy and the marginal integrity of each restoration was calculated as a percentage of continuous margins. A beta regression model was adopted to statistically analyse the data with a consequent pairwise comparison. RESULTS The mean marginal integrity (% ± SD) of the restorations for each tested adhesive strategy after TML was as follows: selective enamel etch/20 seconds = 85.4 ± 3.9, self-etch/20 seconds = 85.3 ± 5.2, self-etch/10 seconds = 80.1 ± 8.2, and selective enamel etch/10 seconds = 80.0 ± 8.5. The difference between both adhesive strategies was not statistically significant at the same application time. The difference between both application times within the same adhesive strategy was statistically significant (P ≤ .01). CONCLUSIONS Universal adhesives applied either in selective enamel etch or in self-etch mode result in comparable marginal integrities when restoring class-II cavities in primary molars. Shortened adhesive application time (10 seconds) could lead to a reduction in the marginal integrity in comparison to the recommended application time of 20 seconds.

Abstract
Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of urushiol as an additive to surface acid etchant on dentin structure, by assessing the biostability of dentin, and determine the bonding strengths of dentin and enamel to the composite in the complicated oral microecology. Methods: Etchants with different concentrations of urushiol (0.5, 1, or 3 wt%) were formulated and tested for their bonding performance. Demineralized dentin beams that were etched with experimental etchants were incubated in simulated body fluid solutions by evaluating the weight decrement after 1 month. The effects of urushiol on dentin and matrix metalloproteinases were confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Moreover, the antibiotic actions of urushiol on the common cariogenic bacteria Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sanguinis, and Streptococcus gordonii as well as the biofilm were evaluated, and its effect on bacterial morphology was observed by scanning electron microscopy. Finally, enamel and dentin specimens were prepared from human molars to determine the depth of demineralization by the etchants and the relationship with the resin bond strengths to enamel and dentin (μTBS) and the morphology of the bonding interface. Results: Urushiol could interact with dentine and inhibit collagenase activity, resulting in biostable dentine. The application of the etchants containing 0.5, 1, or 3 wt% urushiol significantly improved the durability of the dentin bonding interface with its instinctive antibacterial property (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Urushiol not only improves dentin stability by interacting with collagen and inactivating MMP activity but also plays a role in the antibacterial effects in the complicated oral microecology. The effectiveness of urushiol etchant prolongs the longevity of bonded dental restorations without compromising clinical operation time.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Current study aimed to evaluate the effect of different decontamination procedures on micro-shear bond strength (μSBS) of sound (SoD) and caries-affected dentin (CAD) of two universal adhesives after blood-saliva contamination. METHODS One hundred and eighty bovine anterior teeth were prepared and allocated into the respective groups according to tested dentin substrates [SoD, CAD], universal adhesives [Clearfil Bond Universal Quick (UBQ), All-Bond-Universal (ABU)], adhesive contamination stage [none, contamination before and after adhesives light-curing], and according to decontamination procedures [no decontamination, water rinsing, adhesive rebond, Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (ETDA) and chlorhexidine (CHX) application]. Universal adhesives were applied according to manufacturer instructions in self-etch (SE) bonding mode. Four composite microrods were built for each tooth. Specimens were kept in distilled water for 24 hours at 37°C before testing μSBS. Four-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests were used for data analysis. RESULTS A statistically significant difference between contamination stages of both universal adhesives at different decontamination procedures for SoD and CAD. Highest μSBS was recorded for UBQ control group at SoD, while the least was recorded for light-cured ABU upon water rinsing decontamination procedure of CAD. CONCLUSIONS Proper cavity isolation is mandatory to avoid possible contamination which can dramatically affect μSBS. CHX is a potent cavity decontaminant that can restore different dentin substrates bond strength. EDTA presents a promising substitute. UBQ adhesive showed better bonding performance than ABU to both dentin substrates. Application of regular cavity decontamination approaches is highly advised in daily practice to avoid possible detrimental effect of accidental cavity contamination.

Abstract
This study investigated the enamel and dentin bond durability of a two-step adhesive system, using a universal adhesive-derived primer (G2-Bond Universal [GU]), and compared it with the two conventional, two-step, self-etch adhesive systems (Clearfil SE Bond 2 [CS] and OptiBond XTR [OX]) under thermal cycling (TC) and long-term water storage (WS). The shear bond strengths to bovine enamel and dentin were determined using the etch-and-rinse and self-etch modes. Twelve specimens per test group were prepared and further divided into the following subgroups: 1) subjected to TC, 2) long-term WS, and 3) WS for 24 h (baseline). The enamel and dentin bond durability of GU was superior to those of CS and OX in different etching modes and under different degradation conditions. The latest two-step adhesive system, which utilizes universal adhesives' benefits in its primer, might offer durable clinical bonding performances and can be widely used in a clinical setting.

Effect of Different Application Modalities on the Bonding Performance of Adhesive Systems to Dentin: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis. Cells 2023; 12:cells12010190. Abstract
Diverse types of dental adhesives exhibit different cytotoxic outcomes on cells in vitro. Currently, no standard adhesive application technique has so far been decisive for clinicians for better durability of resin-dentin bonds of adhesive systems. The purpose of this study was to systematically review the literature to evaluate the bonding performance of adhesive systems to dentin by using different application modalities. The systematic research strategy was conducted by two reviewers among multiple databases: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and Scielo. In vitro studies reporting the effects of additional steps for the application of adhesive systems on the bond strength to dentin were selected. Meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager Software version 5.3.5 using the random effects model. The methodological quality of each in vitro study was assessed according to the parameters of a previous systematic review. The electronic research through different databases generated a total of 8318 references. After the examination of titles and abstracts, a total of 106 potentially relevant studies accessed the full-text evaluation phase. After full-text examination, 78 publications were included for the qualitative analysis, and 68 studies were included in the meta-analysis. Regarding the etch-and-rinse adhesive systems, the application modalities that improved the overall bond strength were the application of a hydrophobic resin layer (p = 0.005), an extended application time (p < 0.001), an application assisted by an electric current (p < 0.001), a double-layer application (p = 0.05), the agitation technique (p = 0.02), and the active application of the adhesive (p < 0.001). For self-etch adhesive systems, the techniques that improved the overall bond strength were the application of a hydrophobic resin layer (p < 0.001), an extended application time (p = 0.001), an application assisted by an electric current (p < 0.001), a double-layer application (p < 0.001), the agitation technique (p = 0.01), and the active application of the adhesive (p < 0.001). The in vitro evidence suggests that the application of adhesive systems using alternative techniques or additional strategies may be beneficial for improving their bond strength to dentin. The application modalities that favored the overall bond strength to dentin were an extended application time, a double-layer application, an application assisted by an electric current, the active application of the adhesive, and the application of a hydrophobic resin layer. Worth mentioning is that some techniques are intended to increase the degree of the conversion of the materials, and therefore, improvements in the biocompatibility of the materials can be expected.

Abstract
Currently, dental adhesives can be divided into two systems; a smear layer-removal approach with etch-and-rinse adhesives or a smear layer-modified approach with self-etching adhesives. After phosphoric acid etching, the smear layer is completely removed. More attention is, however, required when using self-etching adhesives. The smear layer is partially demineralized by the weak acidic monomer and subsequently incorporated into the hybrid layer. Therefore, the characteristics of the smear layer play an important role on the bonding performance of self-etching adhesives. Such characteristics, for instance, smear layer thickness and smear layer density, are influenced by many factors, e.g., instruments used for dentin surface preparation, cutting speed, and the abrasive particle size of the cutting instruments. This review discusses the contributing factors that affect the smear layer characteristics, and the influence of the smear layer on the bonding performance of dental adhesives. Also, the application techniques regarding how to improve the bonding performance of self-etching adhesives - the smear layer removal by using chemical agents, or the modification of the adhesive application procedures - are provided.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of a time delay before the light activation of resin composite on the microtensile bond strength (µTBS) of self-etch adhesives under dynamic simulated pulpal pressure. MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred twenty crown segments were prepared from human third molars. Dentin surfaces were prepared with coarse diamond burs and connected to a dynamic pulpal pressure device. The self-etch adhesives used were Clearfil SE Bond (CSE), G2-Bond Universal (G2B), Clearfil Universal Bond Quick (CBQ), and G-Premio Bond (GPB). Each adhesive was divided into 3 subgroups: immediate light activation of resin composite (T0), delayed light activation for 150 s (T1), and 300 s (T2). The µTBS data were obtained after 24-h water storage. Scanning electron microscopy was used to evaluate the nanoleakage at the resin-dentin surface. The µTBS data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Duncan's multiple comparisons. RESULTS All adhesives demonstrated a significant reduction in µTBS at T2, except for CBQ where the bond strength was not affected by the delayed light activation times. The two-step self-etch adhesives (CSE and G2B) demonstrated higher bond strength than the one-step adhesives at all conditions. Nanoleakage was observed in all adhesives at T2; however, nanoleakage was detected only in CBQ and GPB at T1. CONCLUSIONS Delayed light activation of resin composite adversely affected the dentin bond strength of self-etch adhesives. Two-step self-etch adhesives had better bonding performance than one-step self-etch adhesives. CLINICAL RELEVANCE After adhesive application, resin composite should be adapted and cured as soon as possible.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed at evaluating the microtensile bond strength (μTBS) and the resin-dentine ultramorphology (24 h and 10 months ageing) of contemporary universal adhesives applied in self-etch (SE) or etch-and-rinse (ER) mode. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty-four sound human molars were collected and randomly allocated in 4 main experimental groups (n = 16) according to the adhesive system employed and subsequently divided into two subgroups depending on their application mode SE or ER (n = 8): ZipBond X (ZBX-SE; ZBX-ER), Prime and Bond Active (PBA-SE; PBA-ER), Clearfil Universal Bond Quick (CBQ-SE; CBQ-ER) or Scotchbond Universal (SCH-SE; SCH-ER). The specimens were cut into sticks with a cross-sectional area of approximately 0.9 mm2 and subjected to μTBS testing at 24 h or after 10 months of ageing in artificial saliva (AS). Five representative fractured specimens from each group were analysed using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). Resin-dentine slabs (Ø 0.9mm2) from each experimental group were immersed in Rhodamine B and subsequently analysed using confocal microscopy analysis (CLSM). The μTBS results were analysed using a two-way ANOVA and Newman-Keuls multiple-comparison test (α = 0.05). RESULTS ZBX, PBA and SCH exhibited greater μTBS values than CQB at 24 h in both SE and ER modes (p < 0.05). CQB showed a significant decrease in μTBS values after ageing both when used in SE and ER mode (p < 0.05). ZBX-ER exhibited no significant differences in the μTBS test after ageing (p > 0.05), while a significant drop in μTBS was seen in SCH-ER and APB-ER after 10-month ageing (p < 0.05). Clear signs of degradation were evident in the resin-dentine interface created with CQB regardless of the application mode or the ageing time. In APB-ER and SCH-ER groups, such signs of degradation were evident after ageing in AS. ZBX showed slight dye infiltration both when used in ER and SE mode. CONCLUSIONS The long-term bonding performance of modern universal adhesives is usually influenced by the adhesive strategy employed; self-etching application should be prioritised during dentine bonding. Moreover, the use of shortened bonding protocols may compromise the quality of the resin-dentine interface and the bonding performance of most modern universal adhesives. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The use of etch-and-rinse bonding procedures, as well as "shortened" application protocols should be eluded when using modern universal adhesives in dentine. However, new generation universal adhesives based on innovative chemical formulations may probably allow clinicians to achieve long-term bonding performance with such simplified system also when employed in ER mode.

Abstract
Objectives This study evaluated the effects of different smear layer preparations on the dentin permeability and microtensile bond strength (µTBS) of 2 self-etching adhesives (Clearfil SE Bond [CSE] and Clearfil Tri-S Bond Universal [CTS]) under dynamic pulpal pressure. Materials and Methods Human third molars were cut into crown segments. The dentin surfaces were prepared using 4 armamentaria: 600-grit SiC paper, coarse diamond burs, superfine diamond burs, and carbide burs. The pulp chamber of each crown segment was connected to a dynamic intra-pulpal pressure simulation apparatus, and the permeability test was done under a pressure of 15 cmH2O. The relative permeability (%P) was evaluated on the smear layer-covered and bonded dentin surfaces. The teeth were bonded to either of the adhesives under pulpal pressure simulation, and cut into sticks after 24 hours water storage for the µTBS test. The resin-dentin interface and nanoleakage observations were performed using a scanning electron microscope. Statistical comparisons were done using analysis of variance and post hoc tests. Results Only the method of surface preparation had a significant effect on permeability (p < 0.05). The smear layers created by the carbide and superfine diamond burs yielded the lowest permeability. CSE demonstrated a higher µTBS, with these values in the superfine diamond and carbide bur groups being the highest. Microscopic evaluation of the resin-dentin interface revealed nanoleakage in the coarse diamond bur and SiC paper groups for both adhesives. Conclusions Superfine diamond and carbide burs can be recommended for dentin preparation with the use of 2-step CSE.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the adhesive application method on the durability of the enamel bond and the thickness of the adhesive layer. A new-generation two-step universal adhesive system, G2-Bond Universal, and two conventional two-step adhesive systems were utilized. The shear bond strength to bovine enamel was measured after thermal cycling in both etch-and-rinse and self-etch modes. Fifteen specimens were divided into three groups as follows: Group I, wherein a strong air stream was applied over the bonding agent for 5 s; Group II, wherein a gentle air stream was applied over the bonding agent for 5 s; and Group III, which was prepared as in Group II, followed by the application of a second layer of the bonding agent and a gentle air stream for 5 s. The durability of the enamel bond and thickness of the tested adhesives were influenced by the application method in both etching modes. The application method used in Group II appeared to be most suitable in terms of the bonding of the adhesives to the enamel. The new-generation two-step self-etch adhesive, comprising a universal adhesive-derived primer and a hydrophobic bonding agent, showed superior bond performance to the conventional two-step adhesive systems.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to assess the effect of application time on the microshear bond strength (μSBS) of three universal adhesives in demineralized and sound enamel before and after aging. MATERIALS AND METHODS Bovine teeth (192) were prepared where buccal surfaces were ground and divided into two groups (sound enamel and demineralized enamel). The specimens in each group were divided into 12 subgroups by combining 3 adhesive agents (All-Bond Universal, Scotchbond Universal, and Tokuyama Universal Bond) × 4 adhesion strategy. Each adhesive was applied with either prolonged (PA) or reduced (RA) application time in etch-and-rinse or self-etch mode. Bonded composites were subjected to μSBS testing after 24-h or 2-year water storage. The results were evaluated using four-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test (α = 0.05). RESULTS The μSBS of adhesives to sound enamel in both etching modes was mostly similar to demineralized enamel, regardless of application time and aging time. At 24-h, all adhesives with PA in self-etch mode showed higher μSBS when compared with RA, except Tokuyama Universal Bond, but after 2-year aging, no significant difference was found in μSBS between RA and PA. The μSBS of adhesives with PA in etch-and-rinse mode depended on used adhesive and enamel condition compared to RA, regardless of μSBS testing time. CONCLUSIONS PA of adhesives did not reveal a significant difference in μSBS to enamel, regardless of substrate type and etching mode. CLINICAL RELEVANCE After 2-year aging, the bond strength of universal adhesives presented no significant difference between PA and RA treatments.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To characterize whether the bonding performance and fatigue strength of resin-dentin interfaces created by a universal adhesive would be affected by different H3PO4-application times to more accurately assess long-term durability. METHODS Mid-coronal flat dentin surfaces with standardized smear-layers were produced on sound third molars, etched with 32% H3PO4 for 0, 3 and 15 s, bonded with a mild universal adhesive (3M-ESPE) and restored with a nanofilled composite. Bonded specimens (0.9 × 0.9 mm) were stored in deionized water for 24 h and sectioned into beams for microtensile testing (n = 10). Resin-dentin beams were tested under tension until failure (0.5 mm/min) after 24 h or 6 month storage in artificial saliva at 37 ̊C. Bar-shaped resin-dentin beams (0.9 × 0.9 × 12 mm) were tested under 4-point-flexure initially at quasi-static loads (n = 22) and then under cyclic loads (n > 50). The stress-life fatigue behavior was evaluated using the twin-bonded interface approach by the staircase method at 4 Hz. Fractured interfaces and the tension side of unfractured beams were evaluated under SEM, along with the micro-morphology of the etched dentin surfaces and hybrid layers. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey test and Wilcoxon Rank Sum Test (α = 0.05). RESULTS Quasi-static loads were limited to discriminate the bonding performance of resin-dentin interfaces. Application modes significantly affected etching patterns, fatigue strength, endurance limits and hybrid layer morphology (p < 0.001). SIGNIFICANCE Reductions in fatigue strength of self-etched bonded interfaces raise concerns about the true ability of universal adhesives to properly bond to dentin.

Abstract
This study evaluated an experimental two-step self-etch adhesive (BZF-29, BZF) by comparing it with a reference two-step self-etch adhesive (Clearfil Megabond 2, MB) and a universal adhesive (G-Premio Bond, GP) for microtensile bond strength (μTBS) and resin-dentin interfacial characteristics. Twenty-four human third molars were used for the μTBS test. Bonded peripheral dentin slices were separated to observe the resin-dentin interface and measure the adhesive layer thickness with SEM. μTBS data of the central beams were obtained after 24 h and 6 months of water storage. Fracture modes were determined using a stereomicroscope and SEM. Nine additional third molars were used to determine the elastic modulus (E) employing an ultra microhardness tester. Water storage did not affect μTBS of the tested adhesives (p > 0.05). μTBS of BZF and MB were similar but significantly higher than GP (p < 0.05). BZF achieved the highest adhesive layer thickness, while GP the lowest. E of BZF and MB were comparable but significantly lower than GP (p < 0.05). Except for GP, the predominant fracture mode was nonadhesive. The superior bonding performance of BZF and MB could be attributed to their better mechanical property and increased adhesive thickness imparting better stress relief at the interface.

Abstract
Currently, the availability of a wide variety of universal adhesives makes it difficult for clinicians to choose the correct system for specific bonding situations to dentin substrate. This study aimed to determine whether there are any alternative techniques or additional strategies available to enhance the bond strength of universal adhesives to dentin through a systematic review and meta-analysis. Two reviewers executed a literature search up to September 2020 in four electronic databases: PubMed, ISI Web of Science, Scopus, and EMBASE. Only in vitro studies that reported the dentin bond strength of universal adhesives using additional strategies were included. An analysis was carried out using Review Manager Software version 5.3.5 (The Nordic Cochrane Centre, The Cochrane Collaboration, Copenhagen, Denmark). The methodological quality of each in vitro study was assessed according to the parameters of a previous systematic. A total of 5671 potentially relevant studies were identified. After title and abstract examination, 74 studies remained in systematic review. From these, a total of 61 studies were included in the meta-analysis. The bond strength of universal adhesives to dentin was improved by the use of one of the following techniques: Previous application of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) inhibitors (p < 0.001), prolonged application time (p = 0.007), scrubbing technique (p < 0.001), selective dentin etching (p < 0.001), non-atmospheric plasma (p = 0.01), ethanol-wet bonding (p < 0.01), prolonged blowing time (p = 0.02), multiple layer application (p = 0.005), prolonged curing time (p = 0.006), and hydrophobic layer coating (p < 0.001). On the other hand, the use of a shortened application time (p = 0.006), and dentin desensitizers (p = 0.01) impaired the bond strength of universal adhesives to dentin. Most of the analyses performed showed a high heterogenicity. The in vitro evidence suggests that the application of universal adhesives using some alternative techniques or additional strategies may be beneficial for improving their bonding performance to dentin. This research received no external funding. Considering that this systematic review was carried out only with in vitro studies, registration was not performed.

Abstract
This study evaluated the effects of remaining dentin thickness (RDT), different smear layers, and aging on the microtensile bond strength (µTBS) of universal adhesives to dentin when applied in self-etch mode. Ninety-six human third molars were randomly allocated to 12 groups (n=8) based on adhesives: ClearfilTM SE Bond 2 (SE, control), ClearfilTM Universal Bond (CU) and ScotchBondTM Universal Adhesive (SB); smear layers: prepared either with 600-grit SiC paper (P) or regular diamond bur (B); and aging: stored in distilled water at 37ºC for 24 hours (24h) or 1 year (1y). µTBS was significantly affected by the type of adhesives, smear layers, and aging (p<0.001). A statistically significant and positive linear relationship was also observed between µTBS and RDT (p<0.05) in all the tested groups, except for SEB1y and CUB24h (p>0.05). RDT, smear layer types, and aging can influence the bonding performances of universal adhesives when applied in self-etch mode.

Abstract
Microtensile bond strength (μTBS) test was introduced in 1994. Since then, it has been utilized profoundly across many bond strength testing laboratories, making it currently one of the most standard and versatile bond strength test. Although it is a static and strength-based method, together with the morphological and spectroscopic investigations, it has been contributing immensely in the advancement of dentin adhesive systems. μTBS test has a greater discriminative capability than the traditional macro-shear bond test. During the early stage of its development, the authors predicted that this testing method would enable evaluation of the adhesive performances of resins to excavated carious or sclerotic dentin and the regional bond strengths of various portions of the cavity. In addition, they also stated the possibility of comparing the long-term stability of resin adhesion at various portions of the cavity walls on teeth extracted at various times after insertion of bonded restorations. In this review, we discussed the historical background, inception and the application of the μTBS test and proposed directions for further improvement of this testing method.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The present study aimed to investigate the changes in the enamel bond strengths of universal adhesives in the early phase of specimen creation and evaluate the effect of double-layer application on enamel bond effectiveness using different etching modes. METHOD Four universal adhesives, namely Clearfil Universal Bond Quick, G-Premio Bond, Scotchbond Universal, and Tokuyama Universal Bond, were used. Clearfil SE Bond two-step self-etch adhesive system was used as a comparison. Fifteen specimens per group were used for determining the shear bond strength (SBS) to bovine enamel in the etch-and-rinse or self-etch mode. The adhesive was applied to specimens in accordance with the manufacturers' instructions (single-layer application), or the adhesive was applied twice (double-layer application). The bonded specimens were stored in distilled water at 37 °C for 5 min or 1, 6, 12, or 24 h before SBS testing. The flexural properties of the resin composite Clearfil AP-X were measured for the same storage periods. RESULTS All universal adhesives exhibited increased SBS values with prolonged storage periods regardless of the application technique or etching mode used. Double-layer application was associated with higher SBS values than single-layer application for most universal adhesives over the same storage period. CONCLUSION Phosphoric acid pre-etching and double-layer application of universal adhesives resulted in increased enamel bond strength in the early phase of specimen bonding. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Care should be taken when using universal adhesives in the self-etch mode for enamel bonding because the enamel adhesion is sensitive to the duration after filling.

Abstract
Clinical Relevance
The degree of conversion of contemporary universal adhesives positively correlates with the bond strength to dentin. The correlation is more marked after thermocycling, suggesting that a high degree of conversion is required for long-term dentin bonding durability.
SUMMARY
Purpose: The objectives of this study were to evaluate the micro-tensile bond strength (μTBS) of five contemporary universal adhesives to dentin after 24 hours and thermocycling (TC), to measure their degrees of conversion (DC) and to test the correlation between μTBS and DC.
Methods and Materials: Four commercially available universal adhesives, Prime&Bond universal (PBU), Ecosite Bond (EB), G-Premio Bond (GPB), and Clearfil Universal Bond Quick (UBQ), and one experimental adhesive, UBQ without an amide monomer (UBQ-A), were used in this study. For the μTBS test, midcoronal dentin of 50 human molars was exposed, ground using 600-grit SiC paper, and the adhesives were applied according to the manufacturers’ instructions. After resin-composite buildup and 24-hour water storage, one-half of the specimens were subjected to 15,000 thermal cycles. The specimens were sectioned into beams and stressed in tension at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min until failure. The DC of adhesives applied to dentin was evaluated using attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy immediately after light-curing. All data were statistically analyzed at a significance level of 0.05.
Results: The highest μTBSs were obtained with UBQ, UBQ-A, and PBU, which were not significantly different from each other both after 24 hours and TC. The μTBS of GPB was lower compared with the aforementioned adhesives, but significantly only after TC, and the lowest μTBSs were obtained with EB. TC did not affect the μTBSs of UBQ, UBQ-A, and PBU significantly, but a significant decrease was observed with GPB and EB. The highest DC was obtained with PBU and UBQ, followed by 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate–rich adhesives UBQ-A and EB, which exhibited significantly lower DCs. The DC of GPB could not be determined because the reference peak at 1608 cm−1 was not detected in its spectra. A significant positive correlation was shown between μTBS and DC after 24 hours (r=0.716) and TC (r=0.856).
Conclusion: μTBS and DC were positively correlated, more markedly after TC, which suggests that DC may be an important factor for bond durability.

Abstract
Background Immediate dentin sealing (IDS) with proanthocyanidin (PA) could be used before cementation with a self-adhesive (SA) cement. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of PA treatment on acid-etched dentin before adhesive application, in IDS and delayed dentin sealing (DDS), on the strengthening property of SA-cemented composite resin inlay in premolars.
Material and Methods Eighty-four maxillary premolars were divided into 7 groups (n=12): 1) (Intact) Sound teeth served as controls; groups 2-7) After cavity preparation and fabrication of composite resin inlay, temporary inlays were made and cemented. After one week, the inlays were removed and composite inlays were luted with a self-adhesive resin cement as follows: 2) (SA) Without dentin- pretreatment; 3) (DDS) Etch-and-rinse adhesive before the cementation; 4) (DDS/PA) PA treatment of acid-etched dentin before the adhesive, followed by the cementation; 5) (Etch/PA) PA treatment of acid-etched dentin before the cementation; 6 and 7) (IDS and IDS/PA) Application of IDS without or with PA treatment, respectively, one week before the cementation. After thermo-mechanical aging, fracture resistance (FR) was tested. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tamhane tests (α=0.05).
Results There was a significant difference between the study groups (P<0.001). The IDS and IDS/PA groups yielded significantly higher FR compared to the SA group (P ≤ 0.003), but the DDS, DDS/PA and Etch/PA groups did not differ from the SA group (P>0.05). The effect of PA on FR in the IDS and DDS techniques was not significant.
Conclusions IDS with or without PA treatment considerably improved the strength of premolars with self-adhesive-cemented inlay, while the value of only IDS with PA treatment reached the level of the sound teeth. Abstract
The removal or modification of smear layers that cover the dentin is critical to allow the penetration of adhesive molecules and to ensure a strong bond between resin and dentin. Aiming to establish a model for clinically-relevant dentin-bond testing, we evaluated the effects of smear layers created by abrasives having similar coarseness (180-grit SiC paper; fine-grit diamond bur) and application modes (single application; double application) on the microtensile bond strengths (µTBS) of two currently available universal adhesives (G-Premio Bond; Scotchbond Universal Adhesive) and a two-step self-etch adhesive (Clearfil Megabond 2). Sixty extracted human third molars were used for the μTBS test. Data were analyzed by three-way ANOVA and Tukey’s test (α = 0.05). Fracture modes were determined using stereomicroscopy. An additional 24 third molars were prepared for observation of the resin–dentin interface by TEM and adhesive-smear layer interaction by SEM. μTBS was significantly affected by the adhesives and their application modes (p < 0.001), implying that the double application of universal adhesives should be recommended to improve their performance. The effect of smear layers was not significant (p > 0.05), indicating that 180-grit SiC papers could be used to prepare dentin as a substitute for fine-grit diamond burs for dentin-bond testing in laboratory settings.

Abstract
We attempted to determine the effect of universal adhesive application time on dentin bond performance in different etching modes based on shear bond strength (SBS) tests and surface free energy (SFE) measurements. The five universal adhesives used were Adhese Universal (AU), Clearfil Universal Bond Quick (CQ), G-Premio Bond (GP), Scotchbond Universal (SU), and Tokuyama Universal Bond (TU). Bovine dentin specimens were divided into four groups of 10 for each adhesive. SBS and SFE were determined after applying the following surface treatments: 1) self-etch (SE) mode with immediate air blowing after adhesive application (IA treatment), 2) SE mode with prolonged application time (PA treatment), 3) etch-and-rinse (ER) mode with IA treatment, and 4) ER mode with PA treatment. Bonded specimens were subjected to SBS testing. The SFE of adhesive-treated dentin surfaces was measured after rinsing with acetone and water. Three-way analysis of variance revealed that dentin SBS values (p<0.001) were significantly influenced by the factors of adhesive type and application duration, but the factor of pre-etching was not significant (p=0.985). The manufacturer's instructions require longer application times for AU and SU, which showed significantly lower SBS values in IA than in PA treatment in both etching modes. However, the difference in the other adhesives was not significant between the IA and PA treatments in either etching mode. The total SFE (γS) was dependent on the adhesive and etching mode. The γS value of the initial group (SiC paper ground group) at baseline was 69.5 (mN·m-1) and that of the pre-etching group at baseline was 30.6 (mN·m-1). For all the adhesives, γS in SE mode showed significantly higher values than in ER mode, regardless of the application time. In SE mode, almost all universal adhesives tested showed lower γS values in PA treatment than in IA treatment. For ER mode, all the adhesives showed significantly higher γS values than those of the pre-etching baseline, regardless of the application time. Most adhesives did not show any significant differences in γS values between IA and PA treatments, regardless of etching mode.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to evaluate the performance of six commercially available universal dental adhesives: Adhese Universal (ADU), All-Bond Universal (ABU), Clearfil Universal Bond Quick (CBQ), G-Premio Bond (GPB), Prelude One (PRO) and Scotchbond Universal (SBU). The properties tested were: (a) degree of C=C conversion (DC%); (b) Vickers micro-hardness (VHN); (c) extent of oxygen inhibition (OI/μm), all related with the adhesive film properties; (d) extent of dentin demineralisation (DM%), insoluble salt formation (AS%); and (e) shear bond strength (SBS, self-etch mode) related to the adhesive-dentin interactions. Statistical analysis (α = 0.05) was performed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (DC%, VHN, OI, DM% AS%) and Weibull analysis (SBS, σ0-β). The DC ranged from 67.2-82.5% (all >GPB), OI from 5.6-18.6 μm (SBU > ADU, GPB, ABU > CBQ > PRO), microhardness from 1.1-6.6 VHN (SBU > ADU > ABU > CBQ > PRO > GPB: not measurable), DM from 69.3% (GPB) to 16-12.5% (CBQ, SBU, ADU) and 13.2-10.6% (ABU, ADU, PRO), in homogeneous groups and AS from 26-15.9% (ABU, CBQ > GPB, PRO, ADU, SBU). For SBS the σ0 (characteristic life) ranged from 29.3-16.6 MPa (CBQ, ADU, ABU, SBU > PRO > GPB), the β (reliability) from 5.1-9.7 (p > 0.05). All failure modes were of mixed type (adhesive and composite cohesive). Although all these adhesives were based on the 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (10-MDP) adhesive monomer, the different co-monomers, solvents and catalysts led to variations in their film properties, reactivity and bonding capacity with dentin.

Abstract
SUMMARY
Objective:
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of reduced application times of universal adhesives on enamel bond fatigue and surface morphology of the treated enamel with constant force atomic force microscopy (AFM).
Methods:
Four universal adhesives—Adhese Universal (AU), Clearfil Universal Bond Quick (CU), G-Premio Bond (GP), and Scotchbond Universal Adhesive (SU)—were evaluated in a laboratory for their ability to adhesively bond resin composite to enamel. Shear bond strengths were initially determined using 15 specimens per test group for each adhesive. Shear fatigue strengths were then determined using 20 specimens per test group for each the adhesives. The fatigue specimens were loaded using a sine wave at a frequency of 20 Hz for 50,000 cycles or until failure occurred. AFM observations, surface Ra roughness measurements, and geometric surface area evaluations of enamel surface treated with the adhesive agents were also conducted.
Results:
A strong relationship was found between the initial shear bond strength and shear fatigue strength for enamel surface Ra roughness but not for geometric surface area. The initial shear bond strength and shear fatigue strength of CU and GP were not influenced by different application times, unlike those of AU and SU. While the surface area of enamel treated with the adhesive agents was not significantly influenced by different application times and type of adhesive, surface Ra roughness of the enamel in the AU and SU groups significantly increased with increasing application time, unlike CU and GP.
Conclusions:
The results of this study suggest that universal adhesives, used with reduced application times, have adequate Ra surface roughness to provide sufficient resistance to enamel bond fatigue at application times from <1 second to 20 seconds, while the geometric surface area of adhesive-treated enamel did not show any significant changes at these different application times.

Abstract
Purpose:
While aiming at the use of Cold Atmospheric Plasmas (CAPs) in restorative dentistry, the present study intended to assess if plasma irradiation increases the Tensile Bond Strength (TBS) in non-demineralized and demineralized dentin.
Materials and Methods:
Forty-eight human dentin samples were assigned to three different treatment modalities: I: Plasma jet irradiation (CAP I); II: Dielectric barrier discharge plasma treatment (CAP II); and III: No plasma (control). In each group, half of the specimens had previously been demineralized. A fourth generation of adhesive and dental composite was applied to all of the samples. The testing of the TBS was performed after artificial aging.
Results:
In the non-demineralized dentin, the mean TBS values were significantly higher after using CAP II (16.95 MPa) than in the control samples (4.2 MPa; p = 0.001). Significantly higher TBS values were also obtained after irradiating the demineralized dentin with CAP I and CAP II (11.68 and 4.6 MPa) when compared to the control samples (0 MPa; p = 0.003 and 0.038). The differences between both of the plasma sources were only slightly significant (p = 0.05).
Conclusion:
CAPs can potentially enhance the adhesive/dentin interfacial bonding strength, whereby the underlying effects seem to depend on the type of plasma source and the degree of dentinal (de-) mineralization. In the non-demineralized dentin, after a complete caries excavation, dielectric barrier discharge devices might be favorable over the plasma jets, in order to improve the adhesive/dentin interfacial bonding. In contrast, the plasma jets could be more effective in the demineralized dentin after an incomplete caries excavation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effects of air-blowing time and storage time on microtensile bond strength (μTBS) of universal adhesives to dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ninety flat dentin surfaces from extracted human third molars were bonded with three universal adhesives (Clearfil Universal Bond-CU; G-Premio Bond-GP; Scotchbond Universal Adhesives-SB). Bonded dentin surfaces were air-dried for 5 s, 15 s, or 30 s followed by resin composite built-up. Resin-dentin beams were tested with μTBS test after different storage time in distilled water (24 h and 1 year). Data were analyzed by three-way ANOVA and Duncan test at (α = 0.05). Failure mode and resin-dentin interfaces were observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Specific features of fractured beams after μTBS were further observed using SEM at high magnification. RESULTS Extension of air-blowing time from 5 s to 30 s increased the 24 h μTBS of CU only. Bond strength of all adhesives significantly decreased after 1-year storage except for CU at 5 s and 30 s of air-blowing time. One-year μTBS were significantly higher when air-blowing times were extended to 15 s for SB and 30 s for CU. Air-blowing time had no influence on GP. CONCLUSION The effect of air-blowing time and storage time on resin-dentin bond was material-dependent. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Extended air-blowing time increased the bond strength and bond durability of CU. Extension of air-blowing time to 15 s and 30 s improve the long-term bond strength of SB and CU, respectively.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study evaluated the effect of shortened application time on long-term bond strength with universal adhesives. METHODS AND MATERIALS Three universal adhesives were used: Clearfil Universal Bond (CU, Kuraray Noritake Dental Inc, Tokyo, Japan), Scotchbond Universal Adhesive (SB, 3M ESPE, St Paul, MN, USA) or G-Premio Bond (GP, GC Corp, Tokyo, Japan). Sixty molars were cut to expose midcoronal dentin and prepared with a regular diamond bur. Each adhesive was applied either according to the manufacturer's instruction or with shortened time. Specimens were stored in distilled water at 37°C for 24 hours and then cut into resin-dentin sticks. Microtensile bond strength (μTBS) was tested after either 24 hours or 1 year of water storage. Data were analyzed by the three-way ANOVA and Duncan tests ( α=0.05). Fracture modes were analyzed under a scanning electron microscope (SEM). One dentin stick per group was selected after fracture mode analysis and further observed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Six additional dentin discs were prepared and conditioned with each adhesive under the different application time to observe the adhesive-smear layer interaction by SEM. RESULTS Shortened application time affected the μTBS ( p<0.001) while storage time did not affect bond strength ( p=0.187). A significant effect of shortened application time on μTBS was observed in the CU at 1 year and in the GP at both storage times. CONCLUSIONS One-year storage time had no effect on the μTBS of universal adhesives to bur-cut dentin. The performance of universal adhesives can be compromised when applied using a shortened application time.

Abstract
The ability to bond restorations to dentine successfully is central to minimally invasive restorative dentistry. While dentine-bonding agents have gone through a variety of ‘generations’, it is the purpose of this paper to describe the latest dentine-bonding agents, the Universal Bonding Agents. These materials may be considered ‘Universal’ insofar as they may be considered to be capable of being used for direct and indirect dentistry, as well as being suitable for use in whichever etching modality the clinician considers appropriate, namely self-etch, etch and rinse or selective enamel etch. Laboratory investigations and initial clinical studies hold the promise that Universal Bonding Agents are a forward step in the quest for the ultimate bond to tooth substance.
Clinical relevance: New Universal Bonding Agents appear to present a promising advance in bonding to dentine.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of different smear layers on enamel and dentin bond durability of various types of self-etch adhesives. METHODS Two universal adhesives, Scotchbond Universal (SU) and Prime & Bond elect (PE); a conventional single-step self-etch adhesive, G-ænial Bond (GB); and two two-step self-etch adhesives, Optibond XTR (OX) and Clearfil SE Bond (SE) were used in this study. Shear bond strengths (SBS) and shear fatigue strengths (SFS) to human enamel and dentin were determined with different smear layer conditions. The prepared specimens were divided into three groups. The bonding surfaces were prepared by grinding with either (1) #180, (2) #600, or (3) #4000-SiC papers before making the bonded assemblies. For each group, 15 specimens were prepared for the SBS and 30 specimens for the SFS. RESULTS The two-step self-etch adhesives showed significantly higher SFS values than the single-step self-etch adhesives, regardless of the smear layer condition or substrate. Although most of the tested adhesives showed no significant differences in enamel SFS values among the smear layer groups, SU, GB, and SE showed significantly lower SFS values in the #180 in dentin groups than the #600 and #4000 groups. CONCLUSION The influence of different smear layer conditions on bond durability was adhesive dependent. Furthermore, the smear layers generated on different substrates also influenced the bond quality of the self-etch adhesives. SIGNIFICANCE Smear layer conditions of enamel and dentin influence the bond durability of universal adhesives and conventional single and two-step self-etch adhesives.

The adhesives Scotchbond Universal, All-Bond Universal, Adhese Universal, and G-Premio Bond were used. Prepared bovine enamel specimens were divided into four groups, based on type of adhesive, and subjected to the following surface treatments: (i) total-etch mode with active application; (ii) total-etch mode with inactive application; (iii) self-etch mode with active application; and (iv) self-etch mode with inactive application. Bonded specimens were subjected to SBS testing. The SFE of the enamel surfaces with adhesive was measured after rinsing with acetone and water. The SBS values in total-etch mode were significantly higher than those in self-etch mode. In total-etch mode, significantly lower SBS values were observed with active application compared with inactive application; in contrast, in self-etch mode there were no significant differences in SBS between active and inactive applications. A reduction in total SFE was observed for active application compared with inactive application. The interaction between etching mode and application method was statistically significant, and the application method significantly affected enamel bond strength in total-etch mode.

Abstract
Limitations associated with wet-bonding led to the recent development of a selective demineralization strategy in which dentin was etched with a reduced concentration of phosphoric acid to create exclusive extrafibrillar demineralization of the collagen matrix. However, the use of acidic conditioners removes calcium via diffusion of very small hydronium ions into the intrafibrillar collagen water compartments. This defeats the purpose of limiting the conditioner to the extrafibrillar space to create a collagen matrix containing only intrafibrillar minerals to prevent collapse of the collagen matrix. The present work examined the use of polymeric chelators (the sodium salt of polyacrylic acid) of different molecular weights to selectively demineralize extrafibrillar dentin. These polymeric chelators exhibit different affinities for calcium ions (isothermal titration calorimetry), penetrated intrafibrillar dentin collagen to different extents based on their molecular sizes (modified size-exclusion chromatography), and preserve the dynamic mechanical properties of mineralized dentin more favorably compared with completely demineralized phosphoric acid-etched dentin (nanoscopical dynamic mechanical analysis). Scanning and transmission electron microscopy provided evidence for retention of intrafibrillar minerals in dentin surfaces conditioned with polymeric chelators. Microtensile bond strengths to wet-bonded and dry-bonded dentin conditioned with these polymeric chelators showed that the use of sodium salts of polyacrylic acid for chelating dentin prior to bonding did not result in significant decline in resin-dentin bond strength. Taken together, the findings led to the conclusion that a chelate-and-rinse conditioning technique based on extrafibrillar collagen demineralization bridges the gap between wet and dry dentin bonding. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The chelate-and-rinse dental adhesive bonding concept differentiates from previous research in that it is based on the size-exclusion characteristics of fibrillar collagen; molecules larger than 40kDa are prevented from accessing the intrafibrillar water compartments of the collagen fibrils. Using this chelate-and-rinse extrafibrillar calcium chelation concept, collagen fibrils with retained intrafibrillar minerals will not collapse upon air-drying. This enables adhesive infiltration into the mineral-depleted extrafibrillar spaces without relying on wet-bonding. By bridging the gap between wet and dry dentine bonding, the chelate-and-rinse concept introduces additional insight to the field by preventing exposure of endogenous proteases via preservation of the intrafibrillar minerals within a collagen matrix. If successfully validated, this should help prevent degradation of resin-dentine bonds by collagenolytic enzymes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE A recently-launched universal adhesive, G-Premio Bond, provides clinicians with the alternative to use the self-etch technique for bonding to dentine without waiting for the adhesive to interact with the bonding substrate (no-waiting self-etch; Japanese brochure), or after leaving the adhesive undisturbed for 10s (10-s self-etch; international brochure). The present study was performed to examine in vitro performance of this new universal adhesive bonded to human coronal dentine using the two alternative self-etch modes. METHODS One hundred and ten specimens were bonded using two self-etch application modes and examined with or without thermomechanical cycling (10,000 thermal cycles and 240,000 mechanical cycles) to simulate one year of intraoral functioning. The bonded specimens were sectioned for microtensile bond testing, ultrastructural and nanoleakage examination using transmission electron microscopy. Changes in the composition of mineralised dentine after adhesive application were examined using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. RESULTS Both reduced application time and thermomechanical cycling resulted in significantly lower bond strengths, thinner hybrid layers, and significantly more extensive nanoleakage after thermomechanical cycling. Using the conventional 10-s application time improved bonding performance when compared with the no-waiting self-etch technique. Nevertheless, nanoleakage was generally extensive under all testing parameters employed for examining the adhesive. CONCLUSION Although sufficient bond strength to dentine may be achieved using the present universal adhesive in the no-waiting self-etch mode that does not require clinicians to wait prior to polymerisation of the adhesive, this self-etch concept requires further technological refinement before it can be recommended as a clinical technique. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Although the surge for cutting application time to increase user friendliness remains the most frequently sought conduit for advancement of dentine bonding technology, the use of the present universal adhesive in the no-waiting self-etch mode may not represent the best use of the adhesive.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of duration of phosphoric acid pre-etching on the bond durability of universal adhesives and the surface free-energy characteristics of enamel. Three universal adhesives and extracted human molars were used. Two no-pre-etching groups were prepared: ground enamel; and enamel after ultrasonic cleaning with distilled water for 30 s to remove the smear layer. Four pre-etching groups were prepared: enamel pre-etched with phosphoric acid for 3, 5, 10, and 15 s. Shear bond strength (SBS) values of universal adhesive after no thermal cycling and after 30,000 or 60,000 thermal cycles, and surface free-energy values of enamel surfaces, calculated from contact angle measurements, were determined. The specimens that had been pre-etched showed significantly higher SBS and surface free-energy values than the specimens that had not been pre-etched, regardless of the aging condition and adhesive type. The SBS and surface free-energy values did not increase for pre-etching times of longer than 3 s. There were no significant differences in SBS values and surface free-energy characteristics between the specimens with and without a smear layer. The results of this study suggest that phosphoric acid pre-etching of enamel improves the bond durability of universal adhesives and the surface free-energy characteristics of enamel, but these bonding properties do not increase for phosphoric acid pre-etching times of longer than 3 s.
