Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effects of rapid maxillary expansion (RME) on Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC) with maxillary atresia. MATERIALS AND METHODS The sample consisted of 27 paediatric patients evaluated through a Brazilian version of the SDSC, answered by their guardians at the following experimental time points: T0 (before installing the Hyrax expander), T1 (on the day of expander stabilization), T2 (3 months after expander stabilization), T3 (immediately after expander removal, following 6 months of retention), and T4 (3 months post-retention). Multilevel Poisson analysis adjusted for repeated measures was performed to compare outcomes across the assessment time points. RESULTS The mean age of patients was 9.1 years (SD = 1.46). The total SDSC scores decreased and were statistically significant from T2 onwards (P < .01), with a decrease of 24% at T4 compared with T1 (IRR 0.76; 95% CI 0.69-0.84). The mean scores at T4 were already lower than the cutoff point for risk of sleep disorders. Regarding the specific domains, there was a significant reduction in sleep breathing disorders, sleep-wake transition disorders, and disorders of excessive somnolence as of T2 (P < .01), T3 (P < .05) and T4 (P < .05), respectively. CONCLUSION RME in children with maxillary atresia had a positive effect on the reduction of total SDSC scores after 3 months of expander stabilization, sustained over 6 and 9 months and significant reduction in sleep breathing disorders domain, sleep-wake transition disorders domain, and disorders of excessive somnolence domain over time points.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aetiology of Sleep bruxism includes specific personality traits, related to perfectionism. AIM To investigate the relationship between probable sleep bruxism (PSB) and personality traits in children and their parents, determining whether children with PSB and their parents are more perfectionists. DESIGN This case-control study included 104 children aged 8-9 years, 52 cases and 52 controls. A clinical examination was performed on the children who completed the Big Five Personality Questionnaire (BFQ-NA) and the Child Perfectionism Inventory. Parents completed a bruxism diagnostic questionnaire according to the AASM criteria, BFQ and Frost multidimensional perfectionism scale questionnaires. t-Tests for independent samples and multivariate logistic regression models were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS A significant relationship between PSB and a self-demanding personality (OR = 1.11, p = .01), restless sleep (OR = 4.41, p = .004), and a family history of clenching and grinding teeth (OR = 3.07, p = .0006) was found in a binary logistic regression model. When adjusted, only restless sleep showed a significant relationship with PSB (p = .03, OR 3.32, 95% CI 1.13-9.81). CONCLUSION Children whose parents reported as clenching or grinding their teeth while asleep in the previous 6 months, and who were found to have abnormal dental wear, had significantly more nightmares, sleep disruption, daytime sleepiness, family history of bruxism, and tended to be more perfectionist.

Abstract
The prevalence of bruxism in the preschool population varies according to different investigations. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of sleep bruxism and its relationship with social and orofacial factors in children aged 3 to 5 years. Three hundred forty-three preschool children were divided into two groups, one with nocturnal bruxism, as reported by parents, and another without this disorder. Questionnaires were distributed to the parents to determine the children's family social status and parafunctional habits at the time of the study. The clinical inspection confirmed the presence of certain parafunctional habits and the children's occlusal characteristics. The data obtained were analysed using descriptive statistics such as frequency chi-square tests to identify the influence of qualitative variables. Of the total sample, 28.9% of preschoolers presented sleep bruxism. The highest prevalence was observed in boys (61.6%) at the age of 5 years (41.4%). Characteristics associated with this pathology were lip incompetence, open bite, crossbite, and overbite, with p < 0.05. Sleep bruxism in preschool children has a higher prevalence in boys and is more frequently expressed from 5 years of age. Open bite, overbite, and crossbite should be considered factors associated with parafunction.

Abstract
Objectives The present paper aims to systematically review the literature published from 2015 to 2023 on bruxism in children with the aim to compilate the best available evidence. Materials and Methods A systematic search in the National Library of Medicine's PubMed, Medline (EBSCO), SCOPUS, and Google Scholar databases was performed to identify all studies on humans assessing genetic, biopsychosocial, and sleep factors assessed with any different approach for sleep bruxism (SB) in children and its interventions. The selected articles were assessed independently by the two authors according to a structured reading of the article's format (PICO). The quality of the articles was evaluated using Quality Assessments Tool for Experimental Bruxism Studies (Qu-ATEBS) and the JBI critical appraisal tools. Results A total of 16 articles were included for discussion in the review and grouped into questionnaire/parental-report (n = 7), SB assessment through parental report of SB and clinical examination (n = 4), and instrumental assessment (n = 5) studies. The total quality scores evaluated with STROBE and Qu-ATEBS were high for all included papers. However, in general, there was no control of bias strategies and there was no control group in the intervention studies. Conclusions Investigations based on self-report, clinical, and instrumental bruxism assessment showed a positive association with genetics, quality of life aspects (school and emotional functions and overuse of screen-time), mother anxiety and family conformation, diet, alteration in sleep behaviors and architecture, and sleep breathing disorders. Additionally, the literature presents options to increase airway patency and, thus, reduce the occurrence of SB. Tooth wear was not found to be a major sign of SB in children. However, methods of SB assessment are heterogeneous and hamper a reliable comparison of the results.

Abstract
Background. Bruxism is a topic of much controversy and is continually debated in the field of dentistry due to the multifaceted clinical relationship that results in painful conditions and consequences to patients. The aim of this review was to determine the effectiveness of a smartphones app in monitoring awake bruxism. Methods. PROSPERO (registration number: CRD42021271190). The eligibility criteria were as followed: observational studies, case-control studies, studies that reported odds ratios, and studies on awake bruxism. The following keywords were searched: [smartphones apps] AND [apps] AND [awake bruxism], OR [sleep bruxism], OR [sleep hygiene], OR [parasomnias], AND [habits]. Results. All the included studies found that the use of the smartphone app allows controlled awake bruxism monitoring. The results also show that the slepp bruxism and awake bruxism are interactive, having negative synergism and substantially increasing the risks of temporomandibular joint pain and temporomandibular disorders. Discussion. In the awake bruxims it was possible to identify 70% symptoms through the different frequencies of behavior provided by the App, within the present technological tools have become daily in young and adult population. The app is effective and easy to use by patients, effectively limiting biases the time of evaluation.

Abstract
The definition of sleep bruxism (SB) has changed over the years, and although it is no longer defined as a disorder, it is considered a risk factor that can result in prejudicial systemic and stomatognathic issues. The prevalence of SB in children is variable among studies, and its decrease during adolescence is a controversial matter among authors. We aimed to determine SB prevalence and assess its trend with age in a sample of pediatric patients who frequented the Lisbon Pediatric Dentistry Service. We conducted a retrospective observational study based on information provided by patients’ parents/caregivers and without examination or polysomnography examination. Data were collected between August 2019 and December 2020 by five dentists. A total of 1900 patients were included, 50.6% and 49.4% of which were male and female, respectively. Of the total sample, 334 (17.6%, 95% confidence interval of 15.9–19.4%) had bruxism, corresponding to 18.9% and 16.2% of male and female patients, respectively (p = 0.121). SB was reported in 20.7% of patients 0–6 years old, in 19.4% of those 7–11 years old, and in 14.6% of those 12–17 years old. In conclusion, SB showed a slightly higher prevalence among male pediatric patients, but further studies are needed to rule out confounding factors.

Abstract
AIM To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis on the prevalence of tooth grinding and/or clenching (TGC) in children and adolescents with a neurodevelopmental disorder or other developmental condition. METHODS A search was performed in seven databases, two sources of grey literature and reference lists of included studies. Risk of bias was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for Studies Reporting Prevalence Data. We used random-effects models with Freeman-Tukey double arcsine transformation for the meta-analyses. RESULTS After selection, 77 of the 2240 studies met inclusion criteria and were categorised by disability and type of TGC (reported, clinically observed and definitive). The pooled prevalence of reported TGC in individuals with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder was 57.6% (95% CI [confidence interval]: 49.5-65.6), 50.4% (95% CI: 35.5-65.4) in individuals with autism spectrum disorder, 67% (95% CI: 59.2-74.8) in cerebral palsy and 68.2% (95% CI: 59.8-76.6) in Down syndrome. Pooled prevalence of clinically observed TGC was 57.5% (95% CI: 31.6-83.4) in autism spectrum disorder and 71.9% (95% CI: 52.4-91.4) in cerebral palsy. Individuals with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder presented 39.8% (95% CI: 24-55.6) of definitive TGC. CONCLUSION Prevalence of reported, clinically observed, and definitive TGC varies according to disabilities, although due to high heterogeneity the result should be interpreted with caution. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES To present a world panorama of the published papers on bruxism in children and adolescents, emphasising the characteristics of studies related to the sleep features of these patients. METHODS Literature searches were conducted in six databases without language or date restrictions. Data on the titles, types of study, main subjects, countries of origin, keywords, years of publication, authors and their network collaborations, journals and sleep studies were extracted and analysed using VantagePoint™ software. RESULTS A total of 725 studies met the eligibility criteria. Most included only children (75.31%), with observational design (66.34%), and risk or aetiology (53.93%) as the main subject. Brazil (18.06%) and Brazilian authors (54.84%) had the largest number of studies, with a low amount of network collaboration. The Journal of Oral Rehabilitation published most of the studies (6.2%); publications in this field have grown considerably from 2000 to 2020. Of the studies, 123 (16.96%) included sleep studies; night sweating, restless sleep, sleep talking, mouth breathing, snoring, obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome, sleep-disordered breathing, nightmares, poor sleep quality and duration, and daytime naps were significantly associated with bruxism in most. CONCLUSION Studies on bruxism in children and adolescents have increased in the past 20 years, with most being observational, and risk or aetiology as the main subject. Brazil and the Journal of Oral Rehabilitation have published most in the field. Sleep studies have shown some features associated with bruxism, such as night sweating, restless sleep, somniloquy, snoring, breathing problems, nightmares, daytime naps, and poor sleep quality and duration.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES The present study aimed to clarify the physiological relationships between rhythmic masticatory muscle activity (RMMA) and cyclic changes in cortical, autonomic, and arousal-motor activities during sleep in sleep bruxism (SB) children. METHODS Polysomnographic recordings were performed on fifteen SB children (9 boys, 6 girls, 10.3 ± 2.5 years) and eighteen control children (5 boys, 13 girls, 10.7 ± 3.1 years) free from sleep and developmental disorders. Sleep and RMMA were scored by the standard rules. Sleep cycle was divided into NREM and REM sleep segments and the frequency of RMMA, transient arousal and movement, and cortical and cardiac activities were then quantitatively analyzed in relation to sleep cycles. RESULTS Neither sleep architecture nor sleep stage distribution of RMMA significantly differed between two groups. In sleep cycles, SB children showed more frequent RMMA in all segments than controls, while cyclic changes in cortical and autonomic activities did not significantly differ between two groups. In SB children, RMMA was the most frequent in the last NREM segment before REM sleep and was associated with increases in cortical beta activity and arousal; more than 70% of RMMA time-dependently occurred with cortical and motor arousals. CONCLUSIONS This is the first study to suggest that the potentiation of RMMA occurrence was associated with transient arousal under cyclic sleep processes in primary SB children.

Abstract
Objective/background Consumption of added sugar and excessive screen-time is increasing worldwide and is associated with sleeping and behavior disorders, which are related with possible Sleep Bruxism (SB) in children. Therefore, the objective of this investigation was to examine the relationship between screen-time and sugar-consumption and possible SB in children. Patients/methods A cross-sectional study, including parents of 460 4- to 8-year-old children, was performed. Frequency of possible SB was assessed with the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire; sugar consumption with the Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children Food-Frequency Questionnaire. Comprehensive measures of screen-time (including cell phones, computers, electronic devices, electronic games, and TV) were taken. The time was recorded in hour/day. All data were analyzed with STATA© data analysis and statistical software version 13.0 (Copyright 1996–2016; Stata-Corp LP, College Station, TX, USA). Spearman correlation test and ordinal-multiple-variable regression analyses were used. Results Data of 440 subjects Mean age 6.2 years (S.D. 1.8) were analyzed. Prevalence of possible SB was 35% and screen-time was available for 92.9% of the children. Mean screen-time was 2.1 h/day. Parents reported 73% of the children (n = 319) to consume added sugar once a day every day and 20% more than once every day. Correlations of possible SB were statistically significant with screen-time (Rho = 0.8; p = 0.002) and sugar-consumption (Rho = 0.7; p = 0.03). Associations were found between possible SB and increase-to-increase screen-time and sugar-consumption (OR > 2). Conclusion The results of this study demonstrated that as screen-time and sugar consumption increased, the frequency of bruxism in children increased. Sleep bruxism is regulated centrally and deals with the reward system, particularly the neurotransmission of dopamine. Sugar and the excessive use of screens alter neurotransmission of dopamine. Excessive sugar consumption and increased screen time are common behaviors in children. Parenting habits affects the consumption of sugar, the use of screens and the occurrence of sleep bruxism.

Abstract
Purpose A possible relationship between sleep bruxism (SB) and several sleep disorders has been suggested in children, which could influence sleep quality and quality of life. This study aims to assess such correlations in a large sample of school children. Methods Parents of 741 consecutive children aged between 8 and 12 years filled the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC). It evaluated 45 items grouped in 8 components: duration of night-time sleep, sleep latency, bedtime problems, sleep quality, night awakenings, nocturnal symptoms, morning symptoms, and daytime sleepiness. An item evaluating parental-reported tooth grinding was also included. Correlation analysis was performed between parental-reported tooth grinding and all the other items. Results A significant correlation between parental-reported tooth grinding and several sleep disorders concerning bedtime problems, night awakenings, nocturnal symptoms, and morning symptoms has been found. In general, correlation strength of significant pairs was low, ranging from 0.092 (sleep apnea) to 0.234 (movement while falling asleep). Conclusions Parental-reported tooth grinding in children is correlated, even if weakly, with some sleep disorders concerning the sphere of bedtime problems, night awakenings, nocturnal symptoms, breathing symptoms, and morning symptoms. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings, with particular regard to the consistency of correlation outcomes between the parental reports and the sleep laboratory measures.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to verify the oral habits, symptoms, and characteristics of some children aged 8 to 10 years that could be associated with possible sleep bruxism. A cross-sectional study was performed. Questionnaires were sent to parents to obtain information on sex, age, school shift, sleep quality, parents' perception of children's behavior, and children's oral habits (nail biting, object biting, and lip biting), and symptoms such as headache or earache. In addition, parents reported the frequency of sleep bruxism (no day to 7 days a week). Descriptive analysis and multinomial logistic regression were performed and the level of significance was set at 5%. A total of 1,554 parents of children aged 8 to 10 years participated in this study. Possible sleep bruxism was reported as mild for 65.7%, moderate for 25.3%, and severe for 9% of the children. In the adjusted multinomial logistic regression, boys were 79% more likely to have sleep bruxism (OR: 1.79; 95%CI 1.23-2.60) and were 2.06 more times at risk of being in the habit of lip biting (OR: 2.06; 95%CI 1.26-3.37). Children with possible severe sleep bruxism were 61% more likely to develop object biting (OR: 1.61; 95%CI 1.09-2.39), 52% more likely to have headaches (OR: 1.52; 95%CI 1.01-2.28), and 3.29 more times at risk of poor sleep quality (OR: 3.29; 95%CI 2.25-4.82). Based on the report, boys with lip and object biting habits, headaches, and poor sleep quality presented a higher chance of possible severe sleep bruxism.
