Abstract
OBJECTIVE The present study compared three models of induction of osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) of rats. DESIGN The induction method was by injection of complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) + type II bovine collagen (CII). Twenty-four adult male rats were divided into four groups (n = 6): G1: Sham, 50 μL of 0.9% sodium chloride at the base of the tail and in each TMJ; G2: OA, 50 μL CFA+CII in each TMJ; G3: RA+OA, 100 μL of CFA+CII at the base of the tail and 50 μL CFA+CII in each TMJ; G4: RA, 100 μL of CFA+CII at the base of the tail. All injections were repeated 5 days later. Twenty-three days after the first injection, the animals were sacrificed and the TMJs were submitted to histomorphometric analysis and measurement of cytokines. The Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests were used (alpha=0.05). RESULTS The total thickness of the condylar cartilage increased in G2 in relation to the other groups, G3 and G4 reduced in relation to G1; and G2 and G4 reduced in relation to G2 and G3. The levels of IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α increased in the three induction models compared to G1. The level of IL-10 increased in G2 compared to the other groups and reduced in G3 and G4 compared to G1. CONCLUSION CFA+CII induced inflammation and degeneration compatible with RA (advanced chronic stage) when injected in the tail, and compatible with OA (acute stage or early disease) when injected only in the TMJ.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ-OA) is a degenerative joint disease in which quantitative analysis based on magnetic resonance image (MRI) or cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) remains limited. Moreover, the long-term effects of soft food on the adaptive condylar remodeling process in TMJ-OA remain unclear. This study aimed to assess the effects of food hardness on adaptive condylar remodeling in a healthy TMJ, TMJ-OA, and controlled TMJ-OA. METHODS Complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) was used for TMJ-OA induction and Link-N (LN) for TMJ repair. Eighteen mature rats were randomly divided into six groups: (1) control/normal diet (Ctrl-N); (2) control/soft diet (Ctrl-S); (3) TMJ-OA/normal diet (CFA-N); (4) TMJ-OA/soft diet (CFA-S); (5) Link-N-controlled TMJ-OA/normal diet (LN-N); and (6) Link-N-controlled TMJ-OA/soft diet (LN-S). Micro-CT was performed 14, 21, and 28 days after CFA injection to analyze the bone volume, bone volume fraction (BVF), bone mineral density (BMD), and trabecular bone number and thickness (Tb.N, Tb.Th). MRI and histological imaging were performed to support the analysis. RESULTS Under CFA treatment, the BVF and BMD decreased significantly (p < 0.01) and later recovered to normal. However, more significant improvements occurred in normal-diet groups than soft-diet groups. Additionally, bone volume changes were more predictable in the normal-diet groups than in the soft-diet groups. The normal-diet groups presented a significant decrease and increase in the Tb.N and Tb.Th, respectively (p < 0.05), while the Tb.N and Tb.Th in the soft-diet groups remained largely unchanged. Furthermore, a significantly higher frequency of irregularities on the condylar articular surface was found in the soft-diet groups. CONCLUSIONS Compared with a soft diet, a normal diet may be beneficial for preserving condyle articular surface and directing bone remodeling in TMJ-OA rats.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Mirror-image pain is a kind of pain that occurs on the contralateral side, but its pathogenesis remains unclear. To develop an osteoarthritis mouse model for investigating mirror-image pain through observing nocifensive behaviors, histological changes, and nociceptive activity at days 3, 7, 14, 21, and 28 after the chemical induction of unilateral temporomandibular joint (TMJ) osteoarthritis. METHODOLOGY We randomly divided 6-week-old mice into sham and complete Freund adjuvant groups. To induce nocifensive behaviors, we applied 0.04 g of von Frey filament, 10 psi of air puff, and cold acetone on both sides of whisker pads at different days. The histology of TMJ on both sides was observed by hematoxylin/eosin staining and microcomputed tomography scanning. Furthermore, the nociceptive activity was evaluated using the phosphorylated cyclic AMP response element binding protein (pCREB) and a microglia marker at different days in the trigeminal subnucleus caudalis. RESULTS Nocifensive behaviors against mechanical and temperature stimuli on the contralateral side became stronger than the baseline on day 28, in agreement with the elevation of the pCREB and the microglia marker in the trigeminal subnucleus caudalis. Thus, hypernociception on the contralateral side occurred at day 28. CONCLUSIONS Clearly, the TMJ model with unilateral osteoarthritis exhibited mirror-image pain. Therefore, this model is useful in investigating the pathogenesis of pain and in developing treatments.

Abstract
Introduction Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are observed in a number of autoimmune diseases but limited studies have assessed the effect of autoimmune diseases on TMD. Therefore, the present review article was conducted to determine the effect of autoimmune diseases on TMD. Methods International databases, including Web of Sciences, PubMed and Scopus, were searched in order to find related articles. The search key words were; temporomandibular joint (TMJ) autoimmune disorders, TMJ, TMD, medical therapy and non-invasive, local and systemic management. Published articles from June, 2010 to June, 2019 were included in the review. Results A total of 11 related articles including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), lupus erythematosus and systemic sclerosis were found. All articles noted that TMJ has unique features that distinguishes it from other human body joints. Cases of TMJ injury and TMD require specific treatments. Therefore, early diagnosis of TMD is essential. It was also mentioned in the articles that the collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) method is a suitable method for investigating TMD and its relationship with RA. Treatment methods included oral steroids, Disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, methotrexate 75 mg, and combination therapy with methotrexate. Conclusion Based on the results of this study, TMD exists in some autoimmune diseases, including RA, lupus erythematosus and systemic sclerosis. Therefore, there should be an interdisciplinary collaboration between physicians and dentists in order to choose the best conservative treatment and medication therapy for TMD to reduce the progression and pain associated with this type of disorder.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine the histological and biochemical effects of high molecular weight hyaluronic acid on experimentally induced osteoarthritic changes in male rat temporomandibular joint (TMJ). DESIGN In this in-vivo study, 36 male albino rats were divided into 3 groups; control non-injected, disease and treatment group. Osteoarthritis was induced using a single intra-articular injection of Complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) (50 μl). High molecular weight hyaluronic acid (HMWHA) was injected intra-articularly once a week, for a total of 3 injections. TMJ tissue samples were dissected from control, disease and treatment groups for biochemical analysis using ELISA test to detect the levels of matrix metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3) on day 28. Histological examination was done using Hematoxylin &eosin, Mallory's trichrome and Alcian blue stains. Data was analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis test followed by Dunn-Sidek method, with a 5 % significance level. RESULTS Treatment group showed regaining of the normal histological features of the TMJ and decreased levels of MMP-3 when compared to disease group. CONCLUSIONS These findings may suggest that HMWHA plays a role in the management of CFA-induced osteoarthritic cartilage lesions.
