Abstract
Background Gastrointestinal diseases can have oral manifestations. The aim of this study was to investigate the knowledge of gastroenterologists and dentists about gastrointestinal diseases with oral manifestations and to assess the frequency, extent and content of communication between gastroenterologists and oral healthcare professionals. Methods Separate questionnaires were developed and sent to all 523 gastroenterologists and a random selection of 500 dentists in the Netherlands. Both questionnaires contained questions about demographic characteristics of the participants, 10 statements about gastrointestinal diseases with possible oral manifestations and questions about the communication between gastroenterologists and oral healthcare professionals. Additionally, the questionnaire for gastroenterologists contained 9 statements about general dentistry and the questionnaire for dentist had 9 questions about gastrointestinal diseases. Results Gastroenterologists answered 47.6% ± 31.9% of the questions correct about gastrointestinal diseases with possible oral manifestations and 57.5% ± 27.9% of the questions correct about general dentistry. Dentists answered 26.6% ± 20.5% of the questions correct about possible oral manifestations of gastrointestinal diseases and 50.3% ± 18.7% of the questions correct about gastrointestinal diseases. Gastroenterologists and dentists valued interdisciplinary consultation as very useful with scores of 4.07 ± 0.70 and 4.67 ± 0.49 on a 5-point Likert scale, respectively, but the frequency of consultation was considered insufficiently with a mean score of 2.88 ± 1.01 and 2.24 ± 1.05 on a 5-point Likert scale, respectively. Conclusions This study suggests that the knowledge of gastroenterologists and dentists about gastrointestinal diseases with oral manifestations could be improved. Interdisciplinary consultation was considered valuable for the optimal treatment of their patients but was assessed as insufficient.

Abstract
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that result in severe loss of supporting structures and substantial tooth loss. Oxidative stress is tightly involved in the progression of periodontitis. Tripartite Motif 16 (TRIM16) has been identified as a novel regulatory protein in response to oxidative and proteotoxic stresses. The present study aimed to investigate the role of TRIM16 in human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs) under oxidative stress. First, we found that the expression of TRIM16 decreased after exposure to H2O2. Then TRIM16 overexpression alleviated H2O2-induced oxidative stress by enhancing antioxidant capacity and reducing the amount of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS). TRIM16 increased cell viability, inhibited cell apoptosis and the depolarization of the mitochondrial membrane potential in hPDLSCs. Furthermore, TRIM16 attenuated H2O2-induced suppression of osteogenic differentiation. Mechanistically, TRIM16 promoted the activation of protein kinase C (PKC)-interacting cousin of thioredoxin (PICOT), p-Akt and Nrf2, while knockdown of PICOT reversed TRIM16-mediated ROS resistance and decreased the expression of p-Akt and Nrf2. In conclusion, TRIM16 alleviated oxidative damage in hPDLSCs via the activation of PICOT/Akt/Nrf2 pathway, suggesting that TRIM16 could be a promising target to develop effective therapies for periodontitis.

Abstract
Gingival bleeding (GB) is a common sign of gingival inflammation, which indicates the presence of periodontal diseases. This study aimed to describe the perception of French adults about their self-reported GB and answers of healthcare professionals regarding the GB reported by these interviewees. A questionnaire administered by one investigator in each of three public settings of four cities in France from September 2016 to November 2017. Among 794 adults interviewed, 502 (63.2%) reported a GB. Among them, 414 (82.5%) believed that GB is benign, and 309 (61.6%) declared one or more responses. The three main responses were to use mouthwash (29.3%), to change to a soft-bristle toothbrush (20.1%) and to modify the brushing technique (19.3%). Almost half (49.0%) questioned at least one healthcare professional concerning their GB: a dentist (43.0%), a physician (14.1%), and a pharmacist (8.0%). The main response of each healthcare professional was: for dentists: a "prescription of mouthwash", for physicians to say "gingival bleeding is not serious"; and for pharmacists: "to sell a mouthwash". Most of the participants considered their GB as benign and had inappropriate responses, which indicates their lack of knowledge regarding periodontal health. The same conclusions can be drawn for healthcare professionals, as reported by interviewees.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Periodontal disease and caries are the most common causes of tooth loss worldwide. Studies have demonstrated strong association between periodontitis and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Medical doctors, who are the primary healthcare providers, seldom advise women to seek dental care during pregnancy. This study was undertaken to explore the knowledge, attitudes and behaviours of medical doctors towards oral health and to identify the barriers of prenatal periodontal healthcare in their practices and its possible implications on pregnancy outcomes. METHODS Total 377 doctors filled the questionnaire. The data collected through personal contacts, social networking, emails, online forms and networking at conferences were analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences 20 software program and presented in tables, charts and diagrams. RESULTS Out of 263 (69.8%) male and 114 (30.2%) female doctors enrolled in the study, only 52 (13.8%) had received education or training on oral care during pregnancy. Among them 299 (79.3%) agreed that there is possible link between health of teeth-gums and pregnancy. Approximately 105 (27.9%) encountered patients with oral/periodontal problem every week but only 108 (28.6%) "always" advised their patient for regular dental check-ups. Similarly, 358 (95%) agreed that there is need for universal guidelines however, 133 (35.3%) thought there was insufficient time to advise patients on oral health during check-ups. CONCLUSIONS There is need for training on 'oral healthcare during pregnancy' for medical doctors. Developing universal guidelines for oral healthcare in pregnant women for all health professionals would be another important step. An adequate referral system to oral healthcare providers and biannual check-ups is recommended for both general patient as well as pregnant women for preventing adverse situations related to oral and specifically periodontal diseases.
