Abstract
This study using hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (HDTMA) modified zeolite as a component of bioretention substrate, to investigate the effect of HDTMA modification on the basic physical and hydraulic properties of substrate layer. Two different levels of HDTMA modified zeolite (ZHD10 and ZHD50) were mixed with a mixture consists of peat soil, river sand and compost (fixed volumetric proportion at 5:4:1) with varying volumetric percentage (25%, 50%, and 75%) to form substrate media. The modification only changes the physical properties of zeolite and media with zeolite slightly, while significant changes in surface hydrophobicity and hydraulic properties were observed. A distinct decline of saturated hydraulic conductivity (K s ) values of zeolite can be observed after the modification, K s values drop 36.5% for ZHD10 and 55.1% for ZHD50. In contrast, K s values of substrate media using zeolite increase after the modification at the same volumetric ratio of zeolite. When 50% of zeolite (v/v%) was used in substrate, K s for natural zeolite, ZHD10 and ZHD50 was 0.024, 0.038 and 0.075 cm/s, respectively. Such alterations in K s are associated with the changes of surface hydrophobicity after the modification and ion exchange between modified zeolite and other materials after soaking into water. Changes in water retention characteristics (WRC) curves were in good accord with the variations in K s , and can be interpreted by the changed K s of tested materials. The orientations of HDTMA molecules loaded on zeolite surface were suggested to play crucial roles in altering the hydraulic properties of zeolite added substrate.

Abstract
The NH3-TPD analysis is a costly and tedious method to determine zeolites acidity. Thus, to do so, FTIR spectroscopy was quantitatively used as a fast and cost-effectively method. Back-propagation artificial neural network (BP-ANN) was used for the analysis of multivariate base on the characteristic absorbance of 11 zeolite samples after metal substitution in the ~3612 cm-1 region. The successive projection algorithm (SPA) was conducted for the uninformative variable elimination and feature selection strategies. The effect of pre-processing methods (e.g. MC and MSC) was examined. It is observed after using MSC for minimizing the light scattering effect and signal-to-noise correction, the minimum mean squared error (MSE) value of the testing set data reduced from 5.36 × 10-2 to 2.19 × 10-4 and Rtot increases from 0.91 to 0.99. Also, the results of nonparametric Wilcoxon t-test and Sign test methods also confirmed that there is no clear difference between the zeolite acidity obtained by two conventional method and the proposed method.

Abstract
Herein, we present reliable, robust, stable, and cost-effective solid-contact ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) for perchlorate determination. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were used as solid-contact material and indium (III) 5, 10, 15, 20-(tetraphenyl) porphyrin chloride (InIII-porph) as an ion carrier. The sensor exhibited an improved sensitivity towards ClO4− ions with anionic slope of −56.0 ± 1.1 (R2 = 0.9998) mV/decade over a linear range 1.07 × 10−6 – 1.0 × 10−2 M and detection limit of 1.8 × 10−7 M. The short-term potential stability and the double-layer capacitance were measured by chronopotentiometric and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements, respectively. The sensor is used for ClO4− determination in fireworks and propellant powders. The results fairly agree with data obtained by ion chromatography.

Abstract
An electrochemical sensor based on carbon paste electrode (CPE) modified with iron(II) doped into a synthesized nano-particles of zeolite X (Fe(II)-NX/ZCME) was constructed, which is highly sensitive for detection of cysteine (Cys). The modified electrode showed an excellent electro-activity for oxidation of Cys in phosphate buffer at pH7.4. It has been found that anodic peak potential of Cys oxidation, compared with the unmodified CPE (UCPE), was shifted towards negative values at the surface of the modified electrode under the optimum condition. The peak current increased linearly with the Cys concentration in the wide range of 5.0 × 10(-9)-3.0 × 10(-3) mol L(-1). The very low detection limit was obtained to be 1.5 × 10(-10) mol L(-1). Finally, the modified electrode was used as a selective, simple and precise new electrochemical sensor for the determination of Cys in the real samples, such as pharmaceutical and biological fluids.

Abstract
Three planar miniaturized perchlorate membrane sensors (3×5 mm(2)) are prepared using a flexible Kaptan substrate coated with nitron-perchlorate (NT-ClO4) [sensor 1], methylene blue-perchlorate (MB-ClO4) [sensor II] and indium-porphyrin (In-Por) [sensor III] as electroactive materials in PVC membranes plasticized with 2-NPPE. Sensors I, II and III display near-Nernstian response for 1.0×10(-5)-1.0×10(-2), 3.1×10(-5)-1.0×10(-2) and 3.1×10(-6)-1.0×10(-2) mol L(-1) ClO4(-) with lower detection limits of 6.1×10(-6), 6.9×10(-6) and 1.2×10(-6) mol L(-1), and anionic calibration slopes of 50.9±0.4, 48.4±0.4 and 57.7±0.3 mV decade(-1), respectively. Methods for determining perchlorate using these sensors offer many attractive advantages including simplicity, flexibility, cost effectiveness, wide linear dynamic response range (0.1-1000 ppm), low detection limit (<1.2×10(-6) mol L(-1)≡0.1 ppm), small sample test volume (100 μL), safety, short response time (<20 s), long life span (~8 weeks), and extended wide working pH range (4.5-8.0). The sensors show high selectivity in the presence of some inorganic ions (e.g., PO4(3-), SO4(2-), S2O3(2-), NO2(-), NO3(-), N3(-), CN(-), Cl(-), Br(-), I(-)) and automation feasibility. Indium-porphyrin based membrane sensor (sensor III) is used as a detector in a wall-jet flow injection set-up to enable accurate flow injection analysis (FIA) of perchlorate in some fireworks without interferences from the associated reducing agents (sulfur and charcoal), binders (dextrin, lactose), coloring agents (calcium, strontium, copper, iron, sodium), color brighten (linseed oil) and regulators (aluminum flakes) which are commonly used in the formulations. The sensor is also used for perchlorate assessment in some propellant powders. The results fairly agree with data obtained by ion-chromatography.
