Potential oscillations induced by localized corrosion of the passivity on iron in halide-containing sulfuric acid media as a probe for a comparative study of the halide effect

The Effect of Immersion Corrosion Time on Electrochemical Corrosion Behavior and the Corrosion Mechanism of EH47 Ship Steel in Seawater

In this paper, electrochemical corrosion tests and full immersion corrosion experiments were conducted in seawater at room temperature to investigate the electrochemical corrosion behavior and the corrosion mechanism of high-strength EH47. The polarization curve, EIS (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy), SEM (scanning electron microscope), and EDS analyses were employed to analyze the results of the electrochemical corrosion process. The electrochemical corrosion experiments showed that the open circuit potential of EH47 decreases and then increases with an increase in total immersion time, with the minimum value obtained at 28 days. With an increase in immersion time, the corrosion current density (Icorr) of EH47 steel first decreases and then increases, with the minimum at about 28 days. This 28-day sample also showed the maximum capacitance arc radius, the maximum impedance and the minimum corrosion rate. In the seawater immersion test in the laboratory, the corrosion mechanism of EH47 steel in the initial stage of corrosion is mainly pitting corrosion, accompanied by a small amount of crevice corrosion with increased corrosion time. The corrosion products of EH47 steel after immersion in seawater for 30 days are mainly composed of FeOOH, Fe3O4 and Fe2O3.

In Situ PM-IRRAS at the Air/Electrolyte/Solid Interface Reveals Oxidation of Iron to Distinct Minerals

Iron interfaces undergo redox and catalytic processes in various environments, on the surface of soils, dust, minerals, and materials that comprise industrial infrastructure. Measuring reactions at interfaces in complex environments is challenging, where adsorption of gases and interaction of aqueous species occur at the surface. This is due to the presence of several ionic species in solutions that catalyze surface oxidation and undergo ion exchange between the solution and the surface and from the influx of oxygen and other gases. Corrosion is an electrochemical redox reaction that is affected by the presence of oxygen and water, but accelerated by dissolved ions. Polarized modulated-infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy was used to measure in situ surface oxidation at the air/electrolyte/iron interface in semineutral NaCl(aq) and acidic HCl(aq) solutions using the meniscus method under ambient conditions. The iron interface was exposed to air, primarily oxygen, allowing for surface oxidation, where metallic iron was found to transform to siderite in NaCl(aq) and lepidocrocite in HCl(aq). Mechanisms are suggested for the transformation of iron to these corrosion products, which significantly impact our understanding of redox processes in the water cycle, material degradation, and energy applications.

Using recurrence plots for the analysis of the nonlinear dynamical response of iron passivation-corrosion processes

Recurrence plots (RPs) and recurrence quantification analysis (RQA) are used in this work to study different nonlinear dynamical regimes emerging in an electrochemical system, namely, the electrodissolution-passivation of iron in chloride-containing sulfuric acid solutions. Current oscillations at different applied potentials and chloride concentrations exhibit bifurcations from periodic to complex (bursting) periodic and aperiodic or chaotic behaviors, associated with different dissolution states of iron. The clarification of these transitions is essential to understand the type of corrosion (uniform or localized) taking place as well as the underlying mechanisms governing the stability of the metal. The RQA reveals that the predictability of the chloride-perturbed Fe|0.75M H₂SO₄ system strongly depends on the chloride concentration and the applied potential. At relatively low chloride concentrations, RQA measures, based on vertical and diagonal structures in RPs, display a decrease upon the breakdown of the passivity on iron and the initiation of localized corrosion (pitting). Phases of pitting corrosion (propagation/growth and unstable pitting) that followed pit initiation are discerned by keen changes of complexity measures upon varying the applied potential. At higher chloride concentrations, the evolution of RQA measures with the potential signifies a transition from the passive-active state dissolution to the polishing state dissolution of iron inside pits. The increase of the applied potential at late stages of pitting corrosion increases the nonlinear correlations and thus the complexity of the system decreases, which corroborates the RQA.
