Noble metal nanodendrites: growth mechanisms, synthesis strategies and applications

Inorganic nanodendrites (NDs) have become a kind of advanced nanomaterials with broad application prospects because of their unique branched architecture. The structural characteristics of nanodendrites include highly branched morphology, abundant tips/edges and high-index crystal planes, and a high atomic utilization rate, which give them great potential for usage in the fields of electrocatalysis, sensing, and therapeutics. Therefore, the rational design and controlled synthesis of inorganic (especially noble metals) nanodendrites have attracted widespread attention nowadays. The development of synthesis strategies and characterization methodology provides unprecedented opportunities for the preparation of abundant nanodendrites with interesting crystallographic structures, morphologies, and application performances. In this review, we systematically summarize the formation mechanisms of noble metal nanodendrites reported in recent years, with a special focus on surfactant-mediated mechanisms. Some typical examples obtained by innovative synthetic methods are then highlighted and recent advances in the application of noble metal nanodendrites are carefully discussed. Finally, we conclude and present the prospects for the future development of nanodendrites. This review helps to deeply understand the synthesis and application of noble metal nanodendrites and may provide some inspiration to develop novel functional nanomaterials (especially electrocatalysts) with enhanced performance.

Rapid Fabrication of Fe and Pd Thin Films as SERS-Active Substrates via Dynamic Hydrogen Bubble Template Method

Fe and Pd thin film samples have been fabricated in a rapid fashion utilizing the versatile technique of dynamic hydrogen bubble template (DHBT) method via potentiostatic electrodeposition over a copper substrate. The morphology of the samples is dendritic, with the composition being directly proportional to the deposition time. All the samples have been tested as SERS substrates for the detection of Rhodamine 6G (R6G) dye. The samples perform very well, with the best performance shown by the Pd samples. The lowest detectable R6G concentration was found to be 10^-6 M (479 μgL^-1) by one of the Pd samples with the deposition time of 180 s. The highest enhancement of signals noticed in this sample can be attributed to its morphology, which is more nanostructured compared to other samples, which is extremely conducive to the phenomenon of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). Overall, these samples are cheaper, easy to prepare with a rapid fabrication method, and show appreciable SERS performance.

Hierarchically Fractal PtPdCu Sponges and their Directed Mass- and Electron-Transfer Effects

Fractal Pt-based materials with hierarchical structures and high self-similarity have attracted more and more attention due to their bioinspiring maximum optimization of energy utilization and mass transfer. However, their high-efficiency design of the mass- and electron-transfer still remains to be a great challenge. Herein, fractal PtPdCu hollow sponges (denoted as PtPdCu-HS) facilitating both directed mass- and electron-transfer are presented. Such directed transfer effects greatly promote electrocatalytic activity, regarded as 3.9 times the mass activity, 7.3 times the specific activity, higher poison tolerance, and higher stability than commercial Pt/C for the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). A new "directed mass- and electron-transfer" concept, characteristics, and mechanism are proposed at the micro/nanoscale to clarify the structural design and functional enhancement of fractal electrocatalyst. This work displays new possibilities for designing novel nanomaterials with high activity and superior stability toward electrocatalysis or other practical applications.

Ultrasonic-assisted synthesis of Pd-Pt/carbon nanotubes nanocomposites for enhanced electro-oxidation of ethanol and methanol in alkaline medium

Herein, a facile ultrasonic-assisted strategy was proposed to fabricate the Pd-Pt alloy/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Pd-Pt/CNTs) nanocomposites. A good number of Pd-Pt alloy nanoparticles with an average of 3.4 ± 0.5 nm were supported on sidewalls of CNTs with uniform distribution. The composition of the Pd-Pt/CNTs nanocomposites could also be easily controlled, which provided a possible approach for the preparation of other architectures with anticipated properties. The Pd-Pt/CNTs nanocomposites were extensively studied by electron microscopy, induced coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and applied for the ethanol and methanol electro-oxidation reaction in alkaline medium. The electrochemical results indicated that the nanocomposites had better electrocatalytic activities and stabilities, showing promising applications for fuel cells.

Building with bubbles: the formation of high surface area honeycomb-like films via hydrogen bubble templated electrodeposition

While the evolution of hydrogen gas is often a troublesome process accompanying electrodeposition, this feature can be exploited to template the growth of highly porous surfaces. This process, known as the dynamic hydrogen bubble template (DHBT) method, can be utilised to create a wide range of macroporous films with nanostructured pore walls. This feature article presents an overview of the status of the DHBT technique, highlighting preparation techniques and emerging applications.
