Carbonyl Chemistry for Advanced Electrochemical Energy Storage Systems

On the basis of the sustainable concept, organic compounds and carbon materials both mainly composed of light C element have been regarded as powerful candidates for advanced electrochemical energy storage (EES) systems, due to theie merits of low cost, eco-friendliness, renewability, and structural versatility. It is investigated that the carbonyl functionality as the most common constituent part serves a crucial role, which manifests respective different mechanisms in the various aspects of EES systems. Notably, a systematical review about the concept and progress for carbonyl chemistry is beneficial for ensuring in-depth comprehending of carbonyl functionality. Hence, a comprehensive review about carbonyl chemistry has been summarized based on state-of-the-art developments. Moreover, the working principles and fundamental properties of the carbonyl unit have been discussed, which has been generalized in three aspects, including redox activity, the interaction effect, and compensation characteristic. Meanwhile, the pivotal characterization technologies have also been illustrated for purposefully studying the related structure, redox mechanism, and electrochemical performance to profitably understand the carbonyl chemistry. Finally, the current challenges and promising directions are concluded, aiming to afford significant guidance for the optimal utilization of carbonyl moiety and propel practicality in EES systems.

Diffusion Control of Organic Cathode Materials in Lithium Metal Battery

Organic cathode materials for lithium batteries are becoming increasingly popular because they have high theoretical redox voltage, high gravimetric capacity, low cost, easy processing and sustainability. However, their development is limited by their solubility in the electrolyte, which leads to rapid deterioration of the battery upon cycling. We developed a Janus membrane, which consists of two layers - a commercial polypropylene separator (Celgard) and a 300-600 nm layer of exfoliated graphite that was applied by a simple and environmentally friendly process. The submicron graphite layer is only permeable to Li⁺ and it drastically improves the battery performance, as measured by capacity retention and high coulombic efficiency, even at 2C rates. Post-mortem analysis of the battery indicates that the new membrane protects the anode against corrosion, and cathode dissolution is reduced. This graphite-based membrane is expected to greatly expedite the deployment of batteries with organic cathodes.

Rheological phase reaction synthesis and electrochemical performance of rufigallol anode for lithium ion batteries

1,2,3,5,6,7-hexahydroxy-anthraquinone (rufigallol) and its metal–organic complex (rufigallol-Li/Ni, R-LN) were both synthesized. The electrochemical performance investigation of rufigallol and R-LN as anodes for lithium ion batteries indicates that pure rufigallol delivers high initial capacity but poor cycling stability, by contrast, the R-LN complex exhibits high initial capacity and excellent cycling stability.

Rufigallol was synthesized by rheological phase method with high yield and investigated as anode for lithium ion batteries.
