Cyclotriphosphazene: A Versatile Building Block for Diverse Functional Materials

Cyclotriphosphazene (CP) is a cyclic inorganic compound with the chemical formula N3P3. This unique molecule consists of a six-membered ring composed of alternating nitrogen and phosphorus atoms, each bonded to two chlorine atoms. CP exhibits remarkable versatility and significance in the realm of materials chemistry due to its easy functionalization via facile nucleophilic substitution reactions in mild conditions as well as intriguing properties of resultant final CP-based molecules or polymers. CP has been served as an important building block for numerous functional materials. This review provides a general and broad overview of the synthesis of CP-based small molecules through nucleophilic substitution of hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP), and their applications, including flame retardants, liquid crystals (LC), chemosensors, electronics, biomedical materials, and lubricants, have been summarized and discussed. It would be expected that this review would offer a timely summary of various CP-based materials and hence give an insight into further exploration of CP-based molecules in the future.

Recent Developments in the Design of New Water-Soluble Boron Dipyrromethenes and Their Applications: An Updated Review

Boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) and its derivatives play an important role in the area of organic fluorophore chemistry. Recently, the water-soluble boron-dipyrromethene dyes have increasingly received interest. The structural modification of the BODIPY core by incorporating different neutral and ionic hydrophilic groups makes it water-soluble. The important hydrophilic groups, such as quaternary ammonium, sulfonate, oligoethylene glycol, dicarboxylic acid, and sugar moieties significantly increase the solubility of these dyes in water while preserving their photophysical properties. As a result, these fluorescent dyes are utilized in aqueous systems for applications such as chemosensors, cell imaging, anticancer, biolabeling, biomedicine, metal ion detection, and photodynamic treatment. This review covers the most current developments in the design and synthesis of water-soluble BODIPY derivatives and their wide applications since 2014.

Electrochemistry and Electrochemiluminescence of Coumarin Derivative Microrods: Mechanism Insights

Organic molecules and related nanomaterials have attracted extensive attention in the realm of electrochemiluminescence (ECL). Herein, a well-known electroluminescence (EL) dopant 2,3,6,7-tetrahydro-1,1,7,7,-tetramethyl-1H,5H,11H-10-(2-benzothiazolyl)quinolizino-[9,9a,1gh] coumarin (C545T) is selected as a new ECL illuminant, which shows a high photoluminescence quantum yield of nearly 100% and excellent ECL performance in the organic phase. For utilizing C545T to achieve ECL detection in aqueous solution, organic microrods of C545T (C545T MRs) were synthesized by a precipitation method. Cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry of C545T and C545T MRs in acetonitrile or phosphate buffer showed one reduction and multiple oxidation peaks, suggesting that the multiple charge states of C545T could be produced by continuous electron- or hole-injection processes. The annihilated ECL emission of C545T and C545T MRs was observed using ECL transient technology. In the presence of triethanolamine (TEOA) or potassium persulfate (K₂S₂O₈), C545T MRs can also give bright anodic and cathodic ECL emission at the GCE/water interface. The proposed ECL system not only has multichannel ECL emission but also shows intense yellow emission (569 nm) with a relative ECL efficiency of 0.81 when TEOA was used as a coreactant. Benefiting from the strong ECL emission of the C545T MRs/TEOA system and the quenching effect of dopamine (DA) on ECL, a convenient sensor for DA was developed with high selectivity and sensitivity.

Novel Water-Soluble Cyclotriphosphazene-Bodipy Conjugates: Synthesis, Characterization and Photophysical Properties

In the present work, novel water-soluble cyclotriphosphazene derivatives (3b and 4b) were synthesized by 'click' reactions between cyclotriphosphazene derivative with hydrophilic glycol side groups (2) and Bodipy's (3a and 4a). All newly synthesized compounds (2, 3b and 4b) were characterized by fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), mass and NMR spectroscopy techniques and elemental analysis (EA). The photophysical properties of Bodipy substituted novel cyclotriphosphazenes (3a and 4a) were examined via UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence emission spectroscopy inside water and many organic solvents such as acetone, tetrahydrofuran, dichloromethane, dimethyl sulfoxide, etc., and the results were compared with the each other.
