Highly conductive nano-silver textile for sensing hydrogen peroxide

Multifunctional Electrically Conductive Copper Electroplated Fabrics Sensitizes by In-Situ Deposition of Copper and Silver Nanoparticles

In this study, we developed multifunctional and durable textile sensors. The fabrics were coated with metal in two steps. At first, pretreatment of fabric was performed, and then copper and silver particles were coated by the chemical reduction method. Hence, the absorbance/adherence of metal was confirmed by the deposition of particles on microfibers. The particles filled the micro spaces between the fibers and made the continuous network to facilitate the electrical conduction. Secondly, further electroplating of the metal was performed to make the compact layer on the particle- coated fabric. The fabrics were analyzed against electrical resistivity and electromagnetic shielding over the frequency range of 200 MHz to 1500 MHz. The presence of metal coating was confirmed from the surface microstructure of coated fabric samples examined by scanning electron microscopy, EDS, and XRD tests. For optimized plating parameters, the minimum surface resistivity of 67 Ω, EMI shielding of 66 dB and Ohmic heating of 118 °C at 10 V was observed. It was found that EMI SH was increased with an increase in the deposition rate of the metal. Furthermore, towards the end, the durability of conductive textiles was observed against severe washing. It was observed that even after severe washing there was an insignificant increase in electrical resistivity and good retention of the metal coating, as was also proven with SEM images.

A thread-based wearable sweat nanobiosensor

Non-invasive wearable biosensors provide an efficient way of continuously quantifying a person's biochemical parameters, and are highly valuable for predicting human physiological status and flagging risks and illness. Commercial wearable sensors are available for tracking a user's physical activities, but few could monitor user's health conditions through sweat analysis. Electronic textile (e-textile) biosensors enable new applications in this scenario because of its high flexibility/wearability, low cost, high level of electronic integration, and unobtrusiveness. However, challenges in developing e-textile sweat biosensors remain in the production of textile-based biosensing materials, skin interfacing design, and embedded data acquisition/transmission. Here, we propose a novel wearable electrochemical sweat biosensor based on conductive threads decorated with zinc-oxide nanowires (ZnO NWs) and apply it to detecting lactate and sodium in perspiration during physical exercise. The sweat biosensor is fully integrated with signal readout and data communication circuits in a wearable headband and is capable of monitoring human sweat accurately and wirelessly. We achieved the detection of lactate and sodium in linear ranges of 0-25 mM and 0.1-100 mM and limits of detection of 3.61 mM and 0.16 mM, respectively, which cover the clinically-relevant ranges of lactate and sodium in human sweat. We demonstrated accurate lactate and sodium measurements in human sweat from a healthy volunteer, and the results are in good agreement with standard test results. We also conducted on-body measurements on the same human volunteer during exercise and confirmed the robustness of the signal readout during body movements and the excellent accuracy of the testing results.

Non-Invasive Flexible and Stretchable Wearable Sensors With Nano-Based Enhancement for Chronic Disease Care

Advances in flexible and stretchable electronics, functional nanomaterials, and micro/nano manufacturing have been made in recent years. These advances have accelerated the development of wearable sensors. Wearable sensors, with excellent flexibility, stretchability, durability, and sensitivity, have attractive application prospects in the next generation of personal devices for chronic disease care. Flexible and stretchable wearable sensors play an important role in endowing chronic disease care systems with the capability of long-term and real-time tracking of biomedical signals. These signals are closely associated with human body chronic conditions, such as heart rate, wrist/neck pulse, blood pressure, body temperature, and biofluids information. Monitoring these signals with wearable sensors provides a convenient and non-invasive way for chronic disease diagnoses and health monitoring. In this review, the applications of wearable sensors in chronic disease care are introduced. In addition, this review exploits a comprehensive investigation of requirements for flexibility and stretchability, and methods of nano-based enhancement. Furthermore, recent progress in wearable sensors-including pressure, strain, electrophysiological, electrochemical, temperature, and multifunctional sensors-is presented. Finally, opening research challenges and future directions of flexible and stretchable sensors are discussed.
