The performance of structurally well-defined AgxPt1−x/Pt(111) surface alloys in the oxygen reduction reaction – An atomic-scale picture

Stability, electronic properties and CO adsorption properties of bimetallic PtAg/Pt(111) surfaces

Aiming at a better fundamental understanding of the chemistry of bimetallic PtAg/Pt(111) surfaces, we have investigated the stability, electronic properties and CO adsorption properties of bimetallic PtAg surfaces, including pseudomorphic Ag film covered Pt(111) surfaces and PtxAg1-x/Pt(111) monolayer surface alloys, using periodic density functional theory calculations. The data provide detailed insights into the relative stabilities of different surface configurations, as indicated by their formation enthalpies and surface energies, and changes in their electronic properties, i.e., in the projected local densities of states and shifts in the d-band center. The adsorption properties of different Ptn ensembles were systematically tested using CO as a probe molecule. In addition to electronic ligand and strain effects, we were particularly interested in the role of different adsorption sites and of the local COad coverage, given by the number of CO molecules per Pt surface atom in the Ptn ensemble. Different from PdAg surfaces, variations in the adsorption energy with adsorption sites and with increasing local coverage are small up to one COad per Pt surface atom. Finally, formation of multicarbonyl species with more than one COad per Pt surface atom was tested for separated Pt1 monomers and can be excluded at finite temperatures. General trends and aspects are derived by comparison with comparable data for PdAg bimetallic surfaces. Fundamental insights relevant for applications of bimetallic Pt catalysts, specifically PtAg catalysts, are briefly discussed.

Bifunctional versus Defect-Mediated Effects in Electrocatalytic Methanol Oxidation

The most prominent and intensively studied anode catalyst material for direct methanol oxidation fuel cells consists of a combination of platinum (Pt) and ruthenium (Ru). Classically, their high performance is attributed to a bifunctional reaction mechanism where Ru sites provide oxygen species at lower overpotential than Pt. In turn, they oxidize the adsorbed carbonaceous reaction intermediates at lower overpotential; among these, the Pt site-blocking carbon monoxide. We demonstrate that well-defined Pt modified Ru(0001) single crystal electrodes, with varying Pt contents and different local PtRu configurations at the surface, are unexpectedly inactive for the methanol oxidation reaction. This observation stands in contradiction with theoretical predictions and the concept of bifunctional catalysis for this reaction. Instead, we suggest that pure Pt defect sites play a more critical role than bifunctional defect sites on the electrodes investigated in this work.

Structure effects on electrocatalysts. Oxygen reduction on Te-modified Pt(111) surfaces: Site-blocking vs electronic effects

In this work, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on tellurium-modified Pt(111) surfaces has been studied. Adsorption of Te adatoms on Pt(111) progressively shifts toward less positive values of both the ORR reaction onset and the half-wave potential in 0.1M HClO₄ for 0 < θ_Te < 0.25. However, at θ_Te > 0.25, the ORR activity increases relative to the one at θ_Te < 0.25, but remains lower than that on clean Pt(111). Results were analyzed in light of simulations of kinetic currents as a function of θ_Te, calculated by employing a simple mean field model including both site blocking and electronic effects. Inside this framework, experimental data are best explained by considering that oxygenated Te species inhibit the ORR by either negatively modifying adsorption energies of reaction intermediates or combined site-blocking and electronic effects. A redox ORR catalysis due to redox properties of Te adatoms is discarded. Contrarily, in 0.05M H₂SO₄, a positive catalytic effect has been found, interpreted in terms of a competitive adsorption-desorption mechanism involving the replacement of adsorbed sulfate by Te adatoms. On the other hand, despite the strong site-blocking effect on H_ads and OH_ads adsorption by Te adatoms, it appears that the reduced Te-Pt(111) adlayer does not inhibit the reaction, suggesting different active sites for H_ads and OH_ads adsorption and for the rate-determining step of the ORR mechanism.
