Facile synthesis of three-dimensional platinum nanoflowers on reduced graphene oxide – Tin oxide composite: An ultra-high performance catalyst for methanol electro-oxidation

One-pot synthesis of PdPtAg porous nanospheres with enhanced electrocatalytic activity toward polyalcohol electrooxidation

Porous nanospheres (PNSs) have great development prospects in the electrocatalysis field because of their structural characteristics, such as a large specific surface area. However, it is still a challenge to find a simple and energy-saving method for the controllable synthesis of PNS nanocatalysts. In this paper, a one-pot CTAC-assisted strategy was developed for the successful formation of PdPtAg PNSs with high porosity at room temperature. Benefitting from the unique structures, optimized composition, acceleration of charge transfer and enhanced resistance to CO poisoning, the PdPtAg PNSs displayed considerably improved electrocatalytic performance with high mass activity and stability toward the ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR) and glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR). The EGOR and GOR mass activities of PdPtAg were 5.00 A mg_metal^-1 and 3.06 A mg_metal^-1, which are 6.22 and 1.91 times that of commercial Pd/C, respectively. This work is expected to offer a new path for improving catalytic performance by simple design and adjustment of morphology.

Effect of Sn Doping on Pd Electro-Catalysts for Enhanced Electro-Catalytic Activity towards Methanol and Ethanol Electro-Oxidation in Direct Alcohol Fuel Cells

Carbon nano-onions (CNOs) were successfully synthesized by employing the flame pyrolysis (FP) method, using flaxseed oil as a carbon source. The alcohol reduction method was used to prepare Pd/CNOs and Pd-Sn/CNOs electro-catalysts, with ethylene glycol as the solvent and reduction agent. The metal-nanoparticles were supported on the CNO surface without adjusting the pH of the solution. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images reveal CNOs with concentric graphite ring morphology, and also PdSn nanoparticles supported on the CNOs. X-ray diffractometry (XRD) patterns confirm that CNOs are amorphous and show the characteristic diffraction peaks of Pd. There is a shifting of Pd diffraction peaks to lower angles upon the addition of Sn compared to Pd/CNOs. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results also confirm the doping of Pd with Sn to form a PdSn alloy. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) displays oxygen, hydroxyl, carboxyl, and carbonyl, which facilitates the dispersion of Pd and Sn nanoparticles. Raman spectrum displays two prominent peaks of carbonaceous materials which correspond to the D and G bands. The Pd-Sn/CNOs electro-catalyst demonstrates improved electro-oxidation of methanol and ethanol performance compared to Pd/CNOs and commercial Pd/C electro-catalysts under alkaline conditions.

Bimetallic Pt-Pd nanostructures supported on MoS2 as an ultra-high performance electrocatalyst for methanol oxidation and nonenzymatic determination of hydrogen peroxide

The authors report on a composite based electrocatalyst for methanol oxidation and H₂O₂ sensing. The composite consists of Pt nanoparticles (NPs), Pd nanoflakes, and MoS₂. It was synthesized by chemical reduction followed by template-free electro-deposition of Pt NPs. FESEM images of the Pd nanoflakes on the MoS₂ reveal nanorod-like morphology of the Pd NPs on the MoS₂ support, whilst FESEM images of the Pt-Pd/MoS₂ composite show Pt NPs in high density and with the average size of ~15 nm, all homogeneously electrodeposited on the Pd-MoS₂ composite. A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was modified with the composite to obtain an electrode for methanol oxidation and H₂O₂ detection. The modified GCE exhibits excellent durability with good catalytic efficiency (the ratio of forward and backward peak current density, I_f/I_b, is 3.23) for methanol oxidation in acidic medium. It was also used to sense H₂O₂ at an applied potential of -0.35 V vs. Ag|AgCl which can be detected with a 3.4 μM lower limit of detection. The sensitivity is 7.64 μA μM^-1 cm^-2 and the dynamic range extends from 10 to 80 μM. This enhanced performance can be explained in terms of the presence of higher percentage of metallic 1T phase rather than a semiconducting 2H phase in MoS₂. In addition, this is a result of the high surface area of MoS₂ with interwoven nanosheets, the uniform distribution of the Pt NPs without any agglomeration on MoS₂ support, and the synergistic effect of Pt NPs, Pd nanoflakes and MoS₂ nanosheets. In our perception, this binder-free nano-composite has promising applications in next generation energy conversion and in chemical sensing.
