Structural, optical, and bifunctional applications: Supercapacitor and photoelectrochemical water splitting of Ni-doped ZnO nanostructures

Preparation of a polyaniline/ZnO-NPs composite for the visible-light-driven hydrogen generation

Compositions of ZnO nanoparticles and polyaniline, in the form of emeraldine salt, were manufactured as thin layers by using the spin-coating method. Then, the effect of polyaniline content on their photoelectrochemical characteristics was studied. Results indicate that all the samples are sensitive to light. Besides, with 0.30% of PANI, the composite sample demonstrates the highest photocurrent density; also, its photocurrent increment starts to increase at a voltage of ⁓ 1.23 V (vs. RHE), which is approximately in accordance with the theoretical potential of water electrolysis. Furthermore, since the rate of electron-hole recombination in this composite sample is the lowest, it possesses the highest photoelectrochemical efficiency. Main findings were analyzed with respect to UV-visible absorption and photoluminescence spectra as well as SEM micrographs of the samples and Raman spectral measurements. Besides, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis was applied to both pure ZnO and the sample with the best response. Effects of drying temperature and layer thickness were also investigated.

A new approach to study the degradation of the organic pollutants by A-doped MxOy/B photocatalysts

This work presents a new approach and a comprehensive mechanism to study the kinetics of the photodegradation of the organic pollutants. The vital role of various operational factors on the degradation of the organic pollutants is explained using this method. The proposed approach is based on the simple strategies and a powerful computational method. Two new variables "the effective concentration of photon" (I_eff) and "the effective concentration of the reactive centers" (RC) are defined to better understand the effect of operational parameters on the organic pollutant photodegradation. The optimum conditions of the photocatalytic degradation can be determined with the help of this method. This approach was used to study the kinetics of photodegradation of the organic pollutants on the [Formula: see text] photocatalysts. The provided mechanism has been examined with the some experimental data. The high correlations between the experimental data and the fitting results under different conditions prove this mechanism could be reliable.

Light-Activated Hydroxyapatite Photocatalysts: New Environmentally-Friendly Materials to Mitigate Pollutants

This review focuses on a reasoned search for articles to treat contaminated water using hydroxyapatite (HAp)-based compounds. In addition, the fundamentals of heterogeneous photocatalysis were considered, combined with parameters that affect the pollutants’ degradation using hydroxyapatite-based photocatalyst design and strategies of this photocatalyst, and the challenges of and perspectives on the development of these materials. Many critical applications have been analyzed to degrade dyes, drugs, and pesticides using HAp-based photocatalysts. This systematic review highlights the recent state-of-the-art advances that enable new paths and good-quality preparations of HAp-derived photocatalysts for photocatalysis.

Structural and Optical Characteristics of Highly UV-Blue Luminescent ZnNiO Nanoparticles Prepared by Sol-Gel Method

A simple single pot sol-gel method is used to prepare ZnNiO nanoparticles at assorted Ni doping levels, 1, 3, 7 and 10 wt.%. Structural and optical properties of nanoparticles are studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-visible diffuse reflection spectroscopy (DRS), photoluminescence (PL) measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), μ-Raman and X-ray photoelectron-spectroscopy (XPS). A single substitutional solid solution phase is detected in the wurtzite ZnNiO nanoparticles at various doping levels. XRD peak splitting and shifting is ascribed to reduced wurtzite character and presence of crystalline strain in nanoparticles at higher level of Ni doping. The Kubelka-Munk function of DRS data reveals the presence of the Burstein-Moss effect in the optical absorption of ZnNiO nanoparticles. Photoluminescence studies show intense UV-blue emission from ZnNiO nanoparticles. The UV PL also exhibits the Burstein-Moss blue shift in the ZnNiO luminescence. Raman analyses also confirms the wurtzite structure of ZnNiO nanoparticles; however, crystal structural defects and bond stiffness increase with Ni doping. The optical and structural studies presented in this work are pointing towards a multivalent Ni substitution in the nanoparticles.
