Abstract
Excessive pesticide use can harm human health, making it essential to develop new techniques to monitor hazardous pesticides in food. Our study focuses on detecting mesotrione (MST) using an unmodified boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode. This was the first application of cathodically pretreated BDD electrode for the detection of MST, based on its oxidation at a high potential value of +1.4 V. We theoretically examined the oxidation mechanism of MST trough the utilization of density functional theory (DFT) methodology. The utilized DPV method achieved a detection limit of 0.45 μM and showed satisfactory selectivity. The practical application of this method was demonstrated by examining corn-based food products. To ensure practical application of the method, MST was deliberately added to the samples to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed method. The effectiveness of the method was confirmed by using HPLC method. This environmentally-friendly approach can establish a solid foundation for future use in food analysis.

Abstract
Mesotrione, which is a kind of herbicide to control broad-leaved weeds, has been increasingly used due to its excellent selectivity, rapid process and low toxicity. However, the excessive application of mesotrione have led to widespread contamination. Herein, a turn-on competitive coordination-based fluorescent probe, 2-hydroxy-1-(9-purin)-methylidenehydrazinenaphthalene (HPM), has been successfully synthesized. HPM could effectively detect Al3+ in CH3OH/HEPES (1/9, v/v) with low limit of detection (LOD) being 0.2 µM via coordination. HPM also exhibited excellent imaging capabilities for Al3+ in living cells with low cytotoxicity. On the basis of the competitive coordination of HPM with Al3+, the [HPM-Al3+] complex could also serve as a potential fluorescence sensor for detecting mesotrione with the LOD of 0.2 µM. Furthermore, [HPM-Al3+] complex was applied for the detection of mesotrione in real samples and test paper. Finally, the mechanism of [HPM-Al3+] for sensing mesotrione was investigated deeply as well. This work designed a new convenient method for on-site detection of mesotrione without the large-scale equipment or complicated pre-treatment.

Abstract
In this research, we employed a strategy akin to "Feeding Two Birds with One Stone" aiming for the dual objectives of highly selective electrochemical detection and photocatalytic degradation of the environmentally hazardous herbicide mesotrione (MTN). We achieved this by utilizing hexagonal boron nitride (BN)-supported strontium cobaltite perovskite nanocomposites (SrCoO3/BN). The fabrication of the innovative bifunctional SrCoO3/BN nanocomposites involved a straightforward process of precipitation, followed by an annealing treatment and ultrasonication. The successful formation of these nanocomposites was corroborated through the application of diverse spectroscopic tools. Notably, as-prepared SrCoO3/BN nanocomposites exhibited a remarkable sensing platform for MTN, characterized by a notably low detection limit (11 nm), considerable sensitivity (3.782 μA μM-1 cm-2), and outstanding selectivity, alongside remarkable stability. Concurrently, these SrCoO3/BN nanocomposites demonstrated exceptional visible-light-driven photocatalytic efficacy for MTN degradation (99%) and complete mineralization. Our investigation systematically delved into the influence of operational parameters, including catalyst loading and the involvement of reactive oxidative species, in both the electrocatalytic and photocatalytic reactions. Drawing from these comprehensive studies, we have proposed plausible mechanisms for detecting and degrading MTN. Our findings pave the way for catalyst development, offering a unified solution for detecting and eliminating toxic organic compounds from the environment.

Abstract
Heavy metal wastes, particularly hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], are generated from anthropogenic activities, and their increasing abundance has been a research concern due to their toxicity, genotoxicity, carcinogenicity and mutagenicity. Exposure to these dangerous pollutants could lead to chronic infections and even mortality in humans and animals. Bioremediation using microorganisms, particularly bacteria, has gained considerable interest because it can remove contaminants naturally and is safe to the surrounding environment. Bacteria, such as Pseudomonas putida and Bacillus subtilis, can reduce the toxic Cr(VI) to the less toxic trivalent chromium Cr(III) through mechanisms including biotransformation, biosorption and bioaccumulation. These mechanisms are mostly linked to chromium reductase and nitroreductase enzymes, which are involved in the Cr(VI) reduction pathway. However, relevant data on the nitroreductase route remain insufficient. Thus, this work proposes an alternative metabolic pathway of nitroreductase, wherein nitrate activates the reaction and indirectly reduces toxic chromium. This nitroreductase pathway occurs concurrently with the chromium reduction pathway.

Abstract
Herbicides are used constantly in agriculture to enhance productivity across the globe. This herbicide monitoring requires utmost importance since its high dose leads to ecological imbalance and a negative impact on the environment. Moreover, a quantification of toxic herbicide is one of the important problems in the food analysis. In this work, deals with the development of a simple, and facile one-pot sonochemical synthesis of strontium doped La2S3 (Sr@La2S3). Morphological and structural characterization confirms the doping of Sr@La2S3 to generate a hierarchical layered structure. The electrochemical performance of modified with rotating disk electrode (RDE) using Sr@La2S3 composite is high, compared to La2S3 and bare electrodes towards the quantitative detection of mesotrione (MTO) in phosphate buffer. Sr@La2S3/RDE showed good sensitivity for MTO detection and it exhibit a range of 0.01-307.01 μM and limit of detection of 2.4 nM. Besides, the selectivity of fabricated electrode is high as it can electrochemically reduce MTO particularly, even in the presence of other chemicals, biological molecules and inorganic ions. The repeatability of MTO detection is high even after 30 days with a lower RSD values. Hence, simple fabrication of Sr@La2S3/RDE could be a novel electrode for the sensitive, selective, and reproducible determination of herbicides in real-time applications.

Abstract
As the use of pesticides in agriculture is increasing at an alarming rate, food contamination by pesticide residues is becoming a huge global problem. It is essential to develop a sensitive and user-friendly sensor device to quantify trace levels of pesticide and herbicide residues in food samples. Herein, we report an electrocatalyst made up of yttrium iron garnet (Y3Fe5O12; YIG) and graphitic carbon nitride (GCN) to attain picomolar-level detection sensitivity for mesotrione (MTO), which is a widely used herbicide in agriculture. First, YIG was prepared by a hydrothermal route; then, it was loaded on GCN sheets via a calcination method. The surface structures, composition, crystallinity, and interfacial and electrocatalytic properties of the YIG and YIG/GCN were analyzed. As the YIG/GCN displayed better surface and catalytic properties than YIG, YIG/GCN was modified on a screen-printed carbon electrode to fabricate a sensor for MTO. The YIG/GCN-modified electrode displayed a detection limit of 950 pM for MTO. The method was demonstrated in (spiked) fruits and vegetables. Then, the modified electrode was integrated with a miniaturized potentiostat called KAUSTat, which can be operated wirelessly by a smartphone. A first smartphone-based portable sensor was demonstrated for MTO that is suitable for use in nonlaboratory settings.

Abstract
4-Hydroxyphenylpyruvatedioxygenase (HPPD) is a Fe(II)/Co(II)-dependent enzyme which has become one of the most effective herbicide targets. HPPD inhibitors have been developed as efficient herbicides for resistant weed control. Developing a method for efficient and rapid HPPD inhibitors detection is still challenging. N-n-butyl-4-methylhydrazinecarbothioamide-1,8-naphthalimide (NMN) was synthesized and used to detect Co2+ efficiently with the limit of detection (LOD) of 7.82 nM with a turn-on fluorescence. Herein a novel fluorescent complex, NMN‒Co2+ was employed to determine HPPD inhibitors which performed a turn-off effect in the sensing process based on the competitive coordination between the probe and HPPD with Co2+. The LODs for three commercial triketone HPPD inhibitors (mesotrione, tembotrione and NTBC) were 6.60 nM, 7.37 nM and 10.22 nM with good sensitivity and selectivity. Furthermore, the present probe has potentials to quantitatively detect mesotrione and tembotrione in real samples.

Abstract
Despite the use of layered double hydroxides (LDH) in different electrochemical (bio)sensors, the construction of aptasensors using LDH-based surfaces was not reported to the best of our knowledge. This may be due to the lack of a suitable linker to attach aptamers to the LDH-modified surface. LDH-based aptasensors are established here as very sensitive and reliable devices in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis. 5'-NH2 DNA aptamer probes were immobilized on the LDH-based surfaces in a vertical conformation without any linker materials. Due to the low electron conductivity of the LDH, carbon nanotubes (CNT) with high electronic conductivity and high surface area were combined with LDH. Thrombin was used as a model protein for aptasensing. The sensor shows a linear range of 0.005-12,000 pmol L-1 and a limit of detection of 0.1 fmol L-1. Moreover, the aptasensor was used for the sensing of thrombin in CSF and serum samples acquired from both healthy and patients with different disease.

Abstract
Dextran aldehyde (dexOx), resulting from the periodate oxidative cleavage of 1,2-diol moiety inside dextran, is a polymer that is very useful in many areas, including as a macromolecular carrier for drug delivery and other biomedical applications. In particular, it has been widely used for chemical engineering of enzymes, with the aim of designing better biocatalysts that possess improved catalytic properties, making them more stable and/or active for different catalytic reactions. This polymer possesses a very flexible hydrophilic structure, which becomes inert after chemical reduction; therefore, dexOx comes to be highly versatile in a biocatalyst design. This paper presents an overview of the multiple applications of dexOx in applied biocatalysis, e.g., to modulate the adsorption of biomolecules on carrier surfaces in affinity chromatography and biosensors design, to serve as a spacer arm between a ligand and the support in biomacromolecule immobilization procedures or to generate artificial microenvironments around the enzyme molecules or to stabilize multimeric enzymes by intersubunit crosslinking, among many other applications.
