Facile synthesis of lotus seedpod-based 3D hollow porous activated carbon/manganese dioxide composite for supercapacitor electrode

Phytochemicals, biological activity, and industrial application of lotus seedpod (Receptaculum Nelumbinis): A review

Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn.) is a well-known food and medicinal plant. Lotus seedpod (Receptaculum Nelumbinis) is the by-products during lotus products processing, which is considered as waste. Numerous studies have been conducted on its phytochemicals, biological activity and industrial application. However, the information on lotus seedpod is scattered and has been rarely summarized. In this review, summaries on preparation and identification of phytochemicals, the biological activities of extracts and phytochemicals, and applications of raw material, extracts and phytochemicals for lotus seedpod were made. Meanwhile, the future study trend was proposed. Recent evidence indicated that lotus seedpods extracts, obtained by non-organic and organic solvents, possessed several activities, which were influenced by extraction solvents and methods. Lotus seedpods were rich in phytochemicals categorized as different chemical groups, such as proanthocyanidins, oligomeric procyanidins, flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenoids, etc. These phytochemicals exhibited various bioactivities, including ameliorating cognitive impairment, antioxidation, antibacterial, anti-glycative, neuroprotection, anti-tyrosinase and other activities. Raw material, extracts and phytochemicals of lotus seedpods could be utilized as sources for biochar and biomass material, in food industry and as dye. This review gives well-understanding on lotus seedpod, and provides theoretical basis for its future research and application.

Multiple reflection and scattering effects of the lotus seedpod-based activated carbon decorated with Co3O4 microwave absorbent

The lotus seedpod-based activated carbon (LSAC) is derived from pyrolysis of lotus seedpod as biomass carbon precursor, and Co₃O₄ is then deposited to LSAC by oxidation-precipitation and crystallization process of Co ions from Co(NO₃)₂ solution. The Co₃O₄ particles uniformly decorate on the surface and/or the inner channels of LSAC. The optimal reflection loss (RL) value of LSAC/Co₃O₄-paraffin wax (PW) composite reaches -39.8 dB, and the bandwidth for RL below -10 dB and -20 dB are 10.3 and 3.0 GHz, respectively, much better than that of LSAC-PW composite for the higher magnetic loss. The addition of Co₃O₄ particles in LSAC-PW composite significantly enhance the RL values in various thicknesses. The channels of the LSAC and decorated Co₃O₄ can improve the abilities of multiple scattering, dipole polarization, interface polarization and magnetic loss. This composite provides a promising method to construct high performance absorbers by using biomass carbon to tune the dielectric properties of the ferromagnetic materials.

Efficient microwave absorber and supercapacitors derived from puffed-rice-based biomass carbon: Effects of activating temperature

Biomass-based carbon is gaining increasing attention because it presents a promising prospect for economic growth and social sustainable development. Moreover, it is an excellent medium for application in electromagnetic and electronic devices. Here, puffed-rice-based carbon is obtained at various activating temperatures, and when the hollow bulges on the carbon disappear, the morphology of the carbon changes into sheet-like structures. The R-800 sample displays the highest I_D/I_G value and demonstrates the best performance when used as both a microwave absorber and an electrode material. The minimum reflection loss (RL) and bandwidth for RL < -10 dB of the R-800 sample reach -72.1 dB and 13.2 GHz, respectively, and the bandwidth for RL < -20 dB is as large as 7.0 GHz, illustrating the widest bandwidth among the five carbon specimens. The multiple reflection effects and scattering, good impedance matching, and interfacial polarization synergistically enhance the microwave absorption performances of the sample. At 1 A g^-1, the specific capacitance of the R-800 sample reaches 117.2 F g^-1 and the capacitance retention remains at 85.3%. Moreover, a hybrid supercapacitor R-800//R-800 demonstrates an outstanding energy density of 15.23 Wh kg^-1, power density of 5739.43 W kg^-1, and high cycle stability (94.5% after 5000 cycles). This functionalized biomass carbon provides a promising media for constructing a bridge between sustainable development and biomass materials.

Effect of Deep Cryogenic Activated Treatment on Hemp Stem-Derived Carbon Used as Anode for Lithium-Ion Batteries

The cryogenic process has been widely applied in various fields, but it has rarely been reported in the preparation of anode materials for lithium-ion battery. In this paper, activated carbon derived from hemp stems was prepared by carbonization and activation; then, it was subjected to cryogenic treatment to obtain cryogenic activated carbon. The characterization results show that the cryogenic activated carbon (CAC) has a richer pore structure than the activated carbon (AC) without cryogenic treatment, and its specific surface area is 1727.96 m²/g. The porous carbon had an excellent reversible capacity of 756.8 mAh/g after 100 cycles at 0.2 C as anode of lithium-ion battery, in which the electrochemical performance of CAC was remarkably improved due to its good pore structure. This provides a new idea for the preparation of anode materials for high-capacity lithium-ion batteries.
