Template-assisted synthesized hollow sphere-like NiCoP/carbon nanoparticles composites for high-performance asymmetric supercapacitors

Construction of urchin-like bimetallic phosphides induced by carbon dots for efficient wide pH hydrogen production

The development of an efficient noble-metal-free and pH-universal electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) would be highly significant for hydrogen (H2) production via electrocatalytic water splitting. However, developing such a catalyst remains a formidable task. Herein, a strategy is proposed for the in situ fabrication of a novel urchin-like NiCoP microsphere catalyst (0.5CDs-NiCoP/NF) on nickel foam (NF) using carbon dots (CDs) as a directing agent. The strong bonding between the CDs and metals provides additional active sites, giving 0.5CDs-NiCoP/NF excellent electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance in environments ranging from acidic to basic. Moreover, the unique structure of 0.5CDs-NiCoP/NF endows this catalyst with low Tafel slopes of 73, 146 and 74 mV dec-1 for HER in acidic, neutral and alkaline conditions, respectively. This performance exceeds that of numerous other reported non-precious HER catalysts. In summary, this work offers a novel and efficient strategy for the design and synthesis of low-cost, efficient, and robust transition metal phosphides (TMPs) electrocatalysts.

NiCo-LDH nanoflake arrays-supported Au nanoparticles on copper foam as a highly sensitive electrochemical non-enzymatic glucose sensor

The detection of glucose in human blood is of great importance in the diagnosis and prevention of diabetes. In this work, we fabricated a novel electrochemical non-enzymatic glucose sensor, NiCo-LDH nanoflake arrays-supported Au nanoparticles on copper foam (NiCo-LDH@ Au/Cu) by galvanic replacement and electrodeposition methods. Owing to the synergistic effect of three-dimensional (3D) architecture of Cu foam, high electrocatalytic activity of Au nanoparticles and NiCo-LDH nanoflake arrays, the NiCo-LDH@Au/Cu electrode exhibits excellent electrocatalytic ability for glucose oxidation in NaOH solution. Under optimized conditions, the NiCo-LDH@Au/Cu electrode shows excellent activity with a linear range from 0.5 to 3000 μM at the potential of 0.50 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), a low detection limit of 0.23 μM (S/N = 3), an ultra-prompt response time of 0.5 s, and a high sensitivity of 23100 μA mM^-1 cm^-2, as well as good selectivity and stability. Furthermore, the as-fabricated non-enzymatic glucose sensor was successfully applied to the glucose detection in human serum as a promising candidate in the development of electrochemical non-enzymatic glucose sensor.

Large Optical Nonlinearity of the Activated Carbon Nanoparticles Prepared by Laser Ablation

Carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) with high porosity and great optical features can be used as a luminescent material. One year later, the same group investigated the NLO properties CNPs and boron-doped CNPs by 532 nm and 1064 nm laser excitations to uncover the underlying physical mechanisms in their NLO response. Hence, a facile approach, laser ablation technique, was employed for carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) synthesis from suspended activated carbon (AC). Morphological properties of the prepared CNPs were studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). UV-Vis and fluorescence (FL) spectra were used to optical properties investigation of CNPs. The size distribution of nanoparticles was evaluated using dynamic light scattering (DLS). The nonlinear optical (NLO) coefficients of the synthesized CNPs were determined by the Z-scan method. As a result, strong reverse saturable absorption and self-defocusing effects were observed at the excitation wavelength of 442 nm laser irradiation. These effects were ascribed to the presence of delocalized π-electrons in AC CNPs. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study investigating the NLO properties of the AC CNPs.
