Dynamic evolution processes in electrocatalysis: structure evolution, characterization and regulation

Reactions on electrocatalytic interfaces often involve multiple processes, including the diffusion, adsorption, and conversion of reaction species and the interaction between reactants and electrocatalysts. Generally, these processes are constantly changing rather than being in a steady state. Recently, dynamic evolution processes on electrocatalytic interfaces have attracted increasing attention owing to their significant roles in catalytic reaction kinetics. In this review, we aim to provide insights into the dynamic evolution processes in electrocatalysis to emphasize the importance of unsteady-state processes in electrocatalysis. Specifically, the dynamic structure evolution of electrocatalysts, methods for the characterization of the dynamic evolution and the strategies for the regulation of the dynamic evolution for improving electrocatalytic performance are summarized. Finally, the conclusion and outlook on the research on dynamic evolution processes in electrocatalysis are presented. It is hoped that this review will provide a deeper understanding of dynamic evolution in electrocatalysis, and studies of electrocatalytic reaction processes and kinetics on the unsteady-state microscopic spatial and temporal scales will be given more attention.

Microbial-Inspired Surface Patterning for Selective Bacterial Actions for Enhanced Performance in Microbial Fuel Cells

The performance of any bio-electrochemical system is dependent on the efficiency of electrode-microbial interactions. Surface properties play a focal role in bacterial attachment and biofilm formation on the electrodes. In addition to electrode surface properties, selective bacterial adhesion onto the electrode surface is mandatory to mitigate energy loss due to undesired bacterial interactions on the electrode surface. In the present study, microbial-patterned graphite scaffolds are developed for selective bacterial-electrode interactions. A power density as high as 1105 mW/m² is achieved with mG-E (a graphite electrode patterned with Escherichia coli), which is about 3 times higher than that of the pristine graphite electrode (370 mW/m²). Initial mechanical pre-treatment of the graphite electrode, followed by bacterial patterning, results in the formation of a unique cobblestone topography with a tuned surface area of 127.12 m²/g. This provides suitable morphology with enhanced active sites for selective bacterial intercalation in graphite layers. This cannot be otherwise achieved by any mechanical or other means. A unique methodology of symbolic regression is adopted to validate a genetic algorithm suitable for predicting a perfect correlation between surface characteristics and electrochemical characteristics with a minimum root-mean-square error of 0.08. The bacterial intercalation onto the graphite electrode causes protuberance of the graphite layers that reduces the surface potential and resistance, leading to high electron transfer. The study presents a unique bacterial-inspired surface patterning on the anode, which is critical for the performance of a microbial fuel cell.

Fabrication of cobaltous telluride and carbon composite as a promising carrier for boosting electro oxidation of ethylene glycol on palladium in alkaline medium

The development of highly active and earth-rich electrocatalysts remains a formidable challenge for the commercialization of fuel cells. Herein, a composite carrier composed of cobaltous telluride (CoTe) and carbon (C) has been designed for the first time to enhance the electrocatalytic performance of palladium (Pd) nanoparticles (NPs) for the electro-oxidation of ethylene glycol (EG). Remarkably, the mass activity for the as-prepared Pd/CoTe-C catalyst during the ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR) is found to reach up to 3917.3 mA mg^-1, which is 2.2 times higher than that of Pd/Co-C (1785.0 mA mg^-1) and 4.1 times greater than that of commercial Pd/C catalyst (962.4 mA mg^-1), exceeding that obtained for most Pd-based electrocatalysts reported thus far. In particular, the Pd/CoTe-C catalyst shows better electrochemical stability toward the EGOR than the Pd/Co-C and commercial Pd/C catalysts. Thus, the Pd/CoTe-C electrocatalyst is expected to exhibit broad application prospects in the field of fuel cells.
