Novel reinforcement learning technique based parameter estimation for proton exchange membrane fuel cell model

Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs) offer a clean and sustainable alternative to traditional engines. PEMFCs play a vital role in progressing hydrogen-based energy solutions. Accurate modeling of PEMFC performance is essential for enhancing their efficiency. This paper introduces a novel reinforcement learning (RL) approach for estimating PEMFC parameters, addressing the challenges of the complex and nonlinear dynamics of the PEMFCs. The proposed RL method minimizes the sum of squared errors between measured and simulated voltages and provides an adaptive and self-improving RL-based Estimation that learns continuously from system feedback. The RL-based approach demonstrates superior accuracy and performance compared with traditional metaheuristic techniques. It has been validated through theoretical and experimental comparisons and tested on commercial PEMFCs, including the Temasek 1 kW, the 6 kW Nedstack PS6, and the Horizon H-12 12 W. The dataset used in this study comes from experimental data. This research contributes to the precise modeling of PEMFCs, improving their efficiency, and developing wider adoption of PEMFCs in sustainable energy solutions.

Impedance Analysis of Electrochemical Systems

Interpretation of impedance spectroscopy data requires both a description of the chemistry and physics that govern the system and an assessment of the error structure of the measurement. The approach presented here includes use of graphical methods to guide model development, use of a measurement model analysis to assess the presence of stochastic and bias errors, and a systematic development of interpretation models in terms of the proposed reaction mechanism and physical description. Application to corrosion, batteries, and biological systems is discussed, and emerging trends in interpretation and implementation of impedance spectroscopy are presented.

Analytical Model for Concentration (Pressure) Impedance of a Low-Pt PEM Fuel Cell Oxygen Electrode

In this study, a model for concentration/pressure impedance ζ of the cathode catalyst layer of a low-Pt PEM fuel cell is developed. The model is based on transient oxygen mass transport equations through the cathode catalyst layer modeled as a single pore with a thin Nafion film covering the pore surface. This structure is used to simulate oxygen transport through the catalyst layer depth and through the ionomer film covering Pt/C agglomerates in low-Pt cells. Analytical solution for zeta-impedance at high cell current is derived; this solution can be used for fast fitting of experimental zeta-spectra. Optimal conditions for measuring the zeta-spectra of a low-Pt cell are discussed. Zeta impedance is not affected by faradaic processes in the cell, which makes this technique a useful alternative to standard EIS.
