Identifying areas of high herpetofauna diversity that are threatened by planned infrastructure projects in Spain

Small Hydropower Plants' Proliferation Would Negatively Affect Local Herpetofauna

Hydropower plants (HPPs) have a strong environmental impact on freshwater wetlands. Small diversion HPPs (SDHPPs) with 0.1–10 MW of installed power, redirect water from small mountainous rivers into several-kilometer-long tubes, disrupting complex dynamics of local aquatic food webs and their interactions with neighbor terrestrial food webs. It certainly affects local aquatic communities, but it is often neglected that two highly threatened vertebrate groups—amphibians and reptiles—which live in and around these wetlands, could be affected as well. In the Balkan peninsula, a part of Southeastern Europe, SDHPPs recently became very attractive and profitable for potential investors after they were proclaimed as eligible for subsidies from the national budget. As a result, in year 2020, the maximal projected number of SHPPs in the Balkans increased to 4,556. According to the literature data, ~28% of amphibian species in the Balkan Peninsula use small rivers and streams in the upper parts of watersheds as feeding, breeding and/or nursery habitats. Additionally, 38% of the total number of reptile species in Europe are registered in the hilly/mountainous areas of the peninsula, and 33% of these species strictly need humid habitats. The attempt of this mini-review is to present the facts which show that SHPPs and DSHPPs, in the way they are currently being installed, present harmful energy solution for the biodiversity of the mountain parts of Balkan peninsula, particularly for local amphibian and reptile populations which rely on lotic aquatic ecosystems and/or humid terrestrial habitats.

A methodological approach to identify agro-biodiversity hotspots for priority in situ conservation of plant genetic resources

Agro-biodiversity is seriously threatened worldwide and strategies to preserve it are dramatically required. We propose here a methodological approach aimed to identify areas with a high level of agro-biodiversity in which to set or enhance in situ conservation of plant genetic resources. These areas are identified using three criteria: Presence of Landrace diversity, Presence of wild species and Agro-ecosystem ecological diversity. A Restrictive and an Additive prioritization strategy has been applied on the entire Italian territory and has resulted in establishing nationwide 53 and 197 agro-biodiversity hotspots respectively. At present the strategies can easily be applied at a European level and can be helpful to develop conservation strategies everywhere.

Eficiencia de las unidades de conservación definidas en la Reserva Natural Iberá (Argentina) en la protección de la diversidad de reptiles

RESUMEN Ante la acelerada pérdida de biodiversidad causada por actividades humanas, las áreas protegidas (APs) constituyen la principal respuesta para mitigar esta crisis. La Reserva Natural Iberá (RNI) incluye 13000 km2 de territorios privados y fiscales, que contienen humedales y tierras altas con elevada biodiversidad, endemismos e importantes poblaciones de especies amenazadas. Para implementar su conservación, a finales del siglo pasado se definieron cinco Unidades de Conservación (UC) priorizadas en infraestructura y guardaparques, seleccionadas mediante criterios pobremente explicitados. En este trabajo definimos áreas prioritarias para la conservación (APC) usando los patrones de distribución de los reptiles en la RNI, para evaluar la eficiencia de las UC instauradas y detectar otras posibles áreas a ser consideradas en gestiones de conservación. La RNI se dividió en 28 celdas de 0,25° de latitud-longitud y mediante muestreos de campo y revisión de colecciones se obtuvieron 1 482 registros de 71 especies de reptiles computándose su presencia/ausencia en las celdas. Se calculó por celda riqueza específica e Índice Combinado de Biodiversidad (ICB) (que incluye rareza y grado de amenaza). Las APC fueron definidas mediante una búsqueda exacta (Complementariedad), obteniendo el mínimo conjunto de áreas que contuvieran a todas las especies y valores del ICB, lo que se denomina “eficiencia máxima”. La superficie mínima necesaria que representa a todas las especies es de diez celdas (36%) y sólo dos incluyen UC actuales. Se necesitan adicionar ocho celdas para cubrir los vacíos de conservación de reptiles, particularmente en el norte de la RNI. Sobre 20 especies amenazadas o insuficientemente conocidas, 12 (60%) no fueron registradas en celdas con UC. Proponemos UC adicionales para efectivizar la protección de todos los reptiles e incluir especies amenazadas.

Roads and wildlife: impacts, mitigation and implications for wildlife management in Australia

Roads can disrupt the population processes of vertebrate wildlife species through habitat fragmentation and vehicle collision. The aims of this review were to synthesise the recent literature on road impacts on wildlife, to identify gaps in our understanding of this topic and to guide future research and management in Australia. We reviewed 244 published studies from the last decade on road and vehicle impacts on wildlife conducted worldwide. A geographic bias was evident among the studies, with 51% conducted in North America, 25% in Europe, 17% in Australia and 7% across several other countries. A taxonomic bias was evident towards mammals (53%), with far fewer studies on birds (10%), amphibians (9%) and reptiles (8%), and some (20%) included multiple taxonomic groups. Although this bias is partly explained by large insurance and medical costs associated with collisions involving large mammals, it is also evident in Australia and signals that large components of biodiversity are being neglected. Despite a prevalence of studies on wildlife road mortality (34%), population impacts are poorly described, although negative impacts are implicated for many species. Barrier effects of roads were examined in 44 studies, with behavioural aversion leading to adverse genetic consequences identified for some species. The installation of road-crossing structures for wildlife has become commonplace worldwide, but has largely outpaced an understanding of any population benefits. Road underpasses appear to be an important generic mitigation tool because a wide range of taxa use them. This knowledge can guide management until further information becomes available. Global concern about the decline of amphibians should lead to a greater focus on road impacts on this group. Priorities for research in Australia include (1) genetic studies on a range of taxa to provide an understanding of life-history traits that predispose species to barrier effects from roads, (2) studies that examine whether crossing structures alleviate population impacts from roads and (3) studies that describe the behavioural response of frogs to crossing structures and that identify factors that may promote the use of suitable structures. A national strategy to mitigate the impacts of roads on wildlife populations is long overdue and must ensure that research on this topic is adequately funded.

The effectiveness of Iberian protected areas in conserving terrestrial biodiversity

The Iberian Peninsula harbors about 50% of European plant and terrestrial vertebrate species and more than 30% of European endemic species. Despite the global recognition of its importance, the selection of protected areas has been ad hoc and the effectiveness of such choices has rarely been assessed. We compiled the most comprehensive distributional data set of Iberian terrestrial plant and vertebrate species available to date and used it to assess the degree of species representation within existing protected areas. Existing protected areas in Spain and Portugal reasonably represented the plant and animal species we considered (73-98%). Nevertheless, species of some groups (amphibians, reptiles, birds, and gymnosperms) did not accumulate in protected areas at a rate higher than expected by chance (p > 0.05). We determined that to conserve all vertebrate and plant species in the Iberian Peninsula, at least 36 additional areas are needed. Selection of additional areas for conservation would be facilitated if such areas coincided with sites of community importance (SCI) designated under the European Commission Habitats Directive. Additional areas required for full representation of the selected plant and animal species all coincide with SCI in Spain. Nevertheless, the degree of coincidence varies between 0.3% and 74.6%, and there is a possibility that important areas for conservation occur outside the SCI. Our results support the view that current SCI can be used for prioritization of areas for conservation, but a systematic reevaluation of conservation priorities in Spain and Portugal would be necessary to ensure that effective conservation of one of European's most important biodiversity regions is achieved.
