Driving a Sustainable University-Industry Partnership

There has been a lot of emphasis on the need for academia-industry collaboration. A successful and sustainable academia-industry partnership can result from a university’s efforts in driving values in its collaboration with industry. This chapter describes a model for mainstreaming a sustainable university partnership with industry through the university’s academic curriculum. The University-Industry Innovation eXchange (UNIX) internship program is a project-based industrial training scheme that is integrated with research projects to provide students with an engaging experience of working with industry for up to one year to solve practical industrial problems. Successful implementation of UNIX projects within the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia’s (UTM) work-based curriculum contributes toward nurturing life-ready and job-ready graduates, development of resilient and sustainable organisation through improved operations, and enhanced university-industry partnership.

Zero-liquid discharge (ZLD) technology for resource recovery from wastewater: A review

Water resources are becoming scarce meaning that reuse options are receiving more and more attention. In this perspective, zero-liquid discharge (ZLD) is considered as an emerging technique to minimize waste, recover resources, treat toxic industrial waste streams, and mitigate potential water quality impacts in receiving water streams. Although ZLD systems are capable of minimizing contamination of water sources and amplifying water supply, its industrial scale applications are restricted due to their high cost and intensive energy consumption. In ZLD systems, membrane-based technologies are an attractive future strategy for industrial wastewater reclamation. Therefore, this review examines why a greater focus on environmental protection and water security is leading to more widespread adoption of ZLD technology in various industries. We highlight existing ZLD processing schemes, including thermal and membrane-based processes, and discuss their limitations and potential solutions. We also investigated global application of ZLD systems for resource recovery from wastewater. Finally, we discuss the potential environmental impacts of ZLD technologies and provide some focus on future research needs.

Urban water infrastructure optimization to reduce environmental impacts and costs

Urban water planning and policy have been focusing on environmentally benign and economically viable water management. The objective of this study is to develop a mathematical model to integrate and optimize urban water infrastructures for supply-side planning and policy: freshwater resources and treated wastewater are allocated to various water demand categories in order to reduce contaminants in the influents supplied for drinking water, and to reduce consumption of the water resources imported from the regions beyond a city boundary. A case study is performed to validate the proposed model. An optimal urban water system of a metropolitan city is calculated on the basis of the model and compared to the existing water system. The integration and optimization decrease (i) average concentrations of the influents supplied for drinking water, which can improve human health and hygiene; (ii) total consumption of water resources, as well as electricity, reducing overall environmental impacts; (iii) life cycle cost; and (iv) water resource dependency on other regions, improving regional water security. This model contributes to sustainable urban water planning and policy.
