Predicting the effect of fouling organisms and climate change on integrated shellfish aquaculture

Aquaculture industry represents a continuously growing sector playing a fundamental role in pursuing United Nation's goals. Increasing sea-surface temperatures, the growth of encrusting species and current cage cleaning practices proved to affect the productivity of commercial species. Here, through a Dynamic Energy Budget application under two different IPCC scenarios, we investigate the long-term effects of Pennaria disticha fragments' on Mytilus galloprovincialis' functional traits as a result of cage cleaning practices. While Climate-Change did not exert a marked effect on mussels' Life-History traits, the simulated effect of cage cleanings highlighted a positive effect on total weight, fecundity and time to commercial size. West-Mediterranean emerged as the most affected sector, with Malta, Montenegro, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia and Turkey between the top-affected countries. These outcomes confirm the reliability of a DEB-approach in projecting at different spatial and temporal scale eco-physiological results, avoiding the limitation of short-term studies and the difficulties of long-term ones.

Current knowledge of approval procedures of dispersant use at sea: looking for potential harmonization from global to Mediterranean scale

Dispersants are approved for use in many countries (UK, South Korea, Australia, Egypt, France, Greece, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Norway, Singapore, Spain, Thailand, and several coastal African, South American, and Middle Eastern countries). Here, the protocols of the most advanced (France, Norway, UK, Spain, Greece, Italy, USA, and Australia) are compared for identifying possible harmonization of approval procedures. Pre-toxicity testing, recognized oil datasets, common thresholds, standardized protocols, zoning, and monitoring are some of the aspects that can be discussed between countries.

Functional Nanohybrids and Nanocomposites Development for the Removal of Environmental Pollutants and Bioremediation

World population growth, with the consequent consumption of primary resources and production of waste, is progressively and seriously increasing the impact of anthropic activities on the environment and ecosystems. Environmental pollution deriving from anthropogenic activities is nowadays a serious problem that afflicts our planet and that cannot be neglected. In this regard, one of the most challenging tasks of the 21st century is to develop new eco-friendly, sustainable and economically-sound technologies to remediate the environment from pollutants. Nanotechnologies and new performing nanomaterials, thanks to their unique features, such as high surface area (surface/volume ratio), catalytic capacity, reactivity and easy functionalization to chemically modulate their properties, represent potential for the development of sustainable, advanced and innovative products/techniques for environmental (bio)remediation. This review discusses the most recent innovations of environmental recovery strategies of polluted areas based on different nanocomposites and nanohybrids with some examples of their use in combination with bioremediation techniques. In particular, attention is focused on eco-friendly and regenerable nano-solutions and their safe-by-design properties to support the latest research and innovation on sustainable strategies in the field of environmental (bio)remediation.

Facile one-step microwave-assisted modification of kaolinite and performance evaluation of pickering emulsion stabilization for oil recovery application

A facile one-step microwave-assisted method was proposed for kaolinite intercalation and grafting. The structure, morphology, composition, and size distribution of kaolinite sheets were investigated using various methods, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis. The potential application of the modified kaolinite as an oil/water emulsion stabilizer was studied. The results verified that intact kaolinite sheets were obtained. The dodecane/water emulsion stabilized by the modified kaolinite remained stable for more than 60 days. The effective performance suggests that the effectiveness of the proposed kaolinite modification method may be useful for Pickering emulsion stabilization in oil recovery applications.
