Inhibition of the photosynthetic activity of Synedra sp. by sonication: Performance and mechanism

Floating plants reduced methane fluxes from wetlands by creating a habitat conducive to methane oxidation

Wetlands are one of the important natural sources of atmospheric methane (CH4), as an important part of wetlands, floating plants can be expected to affect methane release. However, the effects of floating plants on methane release are limited. In this study, methane fluxes, physiochemical properties of the overlying water, methane oxidation potential and rhizospheric bacterial community were investigated in simulated wetlands with floating plants Eichhornia crassipes, Hydrocharis dubia, and Trapa natans. We found that E. crassipes, H. dubia, and T. natans plants could inhibit 84.31% - 97.31%, 4.98% - 88.91% and 43.62% - 92.51% of methane fluxes at interface of water-atmosphere compared to Control, respectively. Methane fluxes were negatively related to nutrients concentration in water column but positively related to the aerenchyma proportions of roots, stems, and leaves. At the same biomass, root of E. crassipes (36.44%) had the highest methane oxidation potential, followed by H. dubia (12.99%) and T. natans (11.23%). Forty-five bacterial phyla in total were identified on roots of three plants and 7 bacterial genera (2.10% - 3.33%) were known methanotrophs. Type I methanotrophs accounted for 95.07% of total methanotrophs. The pmoA gene abundances ranged from 1.90 × 1016 to 2.30 × 1018 copies/g fresh weight of root biofilms. Abundances of pmoA gene was significantly positively correlated with environmental parameters. Methylotrophy (5.40%) and methanotrophy (3.75%) function were closely related to methane oxidation. This study highlights that floating plant restoration can purify water and promote carbon neutrality partially by reducing methane fluxes through methane oxidation in wetlands.

Insight into the synergistic mechanism of sonolysis and sono-induced BiFeO3 nanorods piezocatalysis in atenolol degradation: Ultrasonic parameters, ROS and degradation pathways

Herein, BiFeO₃ nanorods (BFO NRs) was synthesized as the piezoelectric catalyst. The synergistic mechanism of sonolysis and sono-induced BFO-piezocatalysis in atenolol degradation was revealed and the effect of ultrasonic parameters on it was investigated for the first time. The results indicated that 100 kHz was the optimal frequency for the sonolytic and sono-piezocatalytic degradation of atenolol in ultrasound/BFO nanorods (US/BFO NRs) system, with the highest synergistic coefficient of 3.43. The piezoelectric potential differences of BFO NRs by COMSOL Multiphysics simulations further distinguishing that the impact of cavitation shock wave and ultrasonic vibration from sonochemistry reaction (i.e., 2.48, -2.48 and 6.60 V versus 0.008, -0.008 and 0.02 V under tensile, compressive and shear stress at 100 kHz). The latter piezoelectric potentials were insufficient for reactive-oxygen-species (ROS) generation, while the former contributed to 53.93% •OH yield in US/BFO NRs system. Sono-piezocatalysis was found more sensitive to ultrasonic power density than sonolysis. The quenching experiments and ESR tests indicated that the ROS contribution in atenolol degradation followed the order of •OH > ¹O₂ > h⁺ > O₂^•- in US/BFO NRs system and ¹O₂ generation is exclusively dissolved-oxygen dependent. Four degradation pathways for atenolol in US/BFO NRs system were proposed via products identification and DFT calculation. Toxicity assessment by ECOSAR suggested the toxicity of the degradation products could be controlled.

Physiological and morphological responses of Chlorella pyrenoidosa to different exposure methods of graphene oxide quantum dots

Graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs) can convert the ultraviolet (200- 380 nm) into available wavelength (400- 700 nm) for microalgae cultivation. However, it has not been applied in large-scale microalgae culture due to its high cost and difficulties in recovery. This study proposed a new strategy for the sustainable use of GOQDs, namely, GOQDs solution was added to the outer sandwich of the reactor. Herein, the effects of direct and indirect exposure of different GOQDs concentrations (0, 100, and 1000 mg/L) on the microalgae culture were compared. When microalgae were directly exposed to the GOQDs, 100 mg/L of GOQDs increased the biomass production of microalgae by 24.0 %, while 1000 mg/L of GOQDs decreased biomass production by 31 %. High concentration of GOQDs (direct exposure) could cause extra oxidative stress in the microalgae cells and result in a significant reduction of pigment content. When microalgae were indirectly exposed to the GOQDs, the increased concentration of GOQDs enhanced the growth of microalgae. Compared to the blank group, 1000 mg/L of GOQDs increased the microalgae biomass production and bioenergy by 14.1 % and 40.17 %, respectively. The indirect exposure of GOQDs can effectively avoid photo-oxidation and organelle damage to the microalgae cells. Overall, the indirect exposure of GOQDs is a sustainable way for effectively promoting microalgae growth and reducing the application cost.

Recent Progress on Systems and Synthetic Biology of Diatoms for Improving Algal Productivity

Microalgae have drawn much attention for their potential applications as a sustainable source for developing bioactive compounds, functional foods, feeds, and biofuels. Diatoms, as one major group of microalgae with high yields and strong adaptability to the environment, have shown advantages in developing photosynthetic cell factories to produce value-added compounds, including heterologous bioactive products. However, the commercialization of diatoms has encountered several obstacles that limit the potential mass production, such as the limitation of algal productivity and low photosynthetic efficiency. In recent years, systems and synthetic biology have dramatically improved the efficiency of diatom cell factories. In this review, we discussed first the genome sequencing and genome-scale metabolic models (GEMs) of diatoms. Then, approaches to optimizing photosynthetic efficiency are introduced with a focus on the enhancement of biomass productivity in diatoms. We also reviewed genome engineering technologies, including CRISPR (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats) gene-editing to produce bioactive compounds in diatoms. Finally, we summarized the recent progress on the diatom cell factory for producing heterologous compounds through genome engineering to introduce foreign genes into host diatoms. This review also pinpointed the bottlenecks in algal engineering development and provided critical insights into the future direction of algal production.

Simultaneous removal of colonial Microcystis and microcystins by protozoa grazing coupled with ultrasound treatment

Removal of harmful cyanobacteria is an extremely urgent task in global lake management and protection. Conventional measures are insufficient for simultaneously removing cyanobacteria and hazardous cyanotoxin, efficient and environmental-friendly measures are therefore particularly needed. Herbivorous protozoa have great potentials in controlling algae, however, large-sized colonial Microcystis is inedible for protozoa, which is a central problem to be solved. Therefore, in present study, a measure of protozoa grazing assisted by ultrasound was investigated in laboratory scale for eliminating harmful colonial Microcystis. The results showed that with ultrasound power and time increasing, the proportion of unicellular Microcystis increased significantly. With Ochromonas addition, approximately 80% of colonial Microcystis and microcystin was removed on day 4 under ultrasound power of 100 W for 15 min, while Ochromonas only reduced Microcystis by less than 20% without assistance of ultrasound. Moreover, when directly exposed to low-intensity ultrasound, Ochromonas showed strong resistance to ultrasound and were not inhibited in grazing Microcystis. Overall, ultrasound increases edible food for protozoa via collapsing Microcystis colonies and assists Ochromonas to remove Microcystis, thus intermittently collapsing colonial Microcystis using low-intensity ultrasound can significantly improve the removal efficiency of Microcystis by protozoa grazing, which provided a new insight in controlling harmful colonial Microcystis.

Insights into diatom microalgal farming for treatment of wastewater and pretreatment of algal cells by ultrasonication for value creation

Wastewater management and its treatment have revolutionized the industry sector into many innovative techniques. However, the cost of recycling via chemical treatment has major issues especially in economically poor sectors. On the offset, one of the most viable and economical techniques to clean wastewater is by growing microalgae in it. Since wastewater is rich in nitrates, phosphates and other trace elements, the environment is suitable for the growth of microalgae. On the other side, the cost of harvesting microalgae for its secondary metabolites is burgeoning. While simultaneously growing of microalgae in photobioreactors requires regular feeding of the nutrients and maintenance which increases the cost of operation and hence cost of its end products. The growth of microalgae in waste waters makes the process not only economical but they also manufacture more amounts of value added products. However, harvesting of these values added products is still a cumbersome task. On the offset, it has been observed that pretreating the microalgal biomass with ultrasonication allows easy oozing of the secondary metabolites like oil, proteins, carbohydrates and methane at much lower cost than that required for their extraction. Among microalgae diatoms are more robust and have immense crude oil and are rich in various value added products. However, due to their thick silica walls they do not ooze the metabolites until the mechanical force on their walls reaches certain threshold energy. In this review recycling of wastewater using microalgae and its pretreatment via ultrasonication with special reference to diatoms is critically discussed. Perspectives on circular bioeconomy and knowledge gaps for employing microalgae to recycle wastewater have been comprehensively narrated.

The Roles of Sono-induced Nitrosation and Nitration in the Sono-degradation of Diphenylamine in Water: Mechanisms, Kinetics and Impact Factors

The potential risks of sono-induced nitrosation and nitration side reactions and consequent toxic nitrogenous byproducts were first investigated via sono-degradation of diphenylamine (DPhA) in this study. The kinetic models for overall DPhA degradation and the formation of nitrosation byproduct (N-nitrosodiphenylamine, NDPhA) and nitration byproducts (2-nitro-DPhA and 4-nitro-DPhA) were well established and fitted (R² > 0.98). Nitrosation contributed much more than nitration (namely, 43.3 - 47.3 times) to the sono-degradation of DPhA. The contribution of sono-induced nitrosation ranged from 0.4 to 56.6% at different conditions. The maximum NDPhA formation rate and the contribution of sono-induced nitrosation were obtained at 600 and 200 kHz, respectively, as ultrasonic frequencies at 200 to 800 kHz. Both NDPhA formation rate and the contribution of sono-induced nitrosation increased with increasing power density, while decreased with increasing initial pH and DPhA concentration. PO₄^3-, HCO₃^-, NH₄⁺ and Fe²⁺ presented negative impacts on sono-induced nitrosation in order of HCO₃^- >> Fe²⁺ > PO₄^3- > NH₄⁺, while Br^- exhibited a promoting effect. The mechanism of NDPhA formation via sono-induced nitrosation was first proposed.
