Hydrodynamic modelling of a polluted tropical bay: Assessment of anthropogenic impacts on freshwater runoff and estuarine water renewal

Catch assemblages in the small-scale trap fishery with relation to hydrographic features of a tropical bay in the Gulf of Thailand

Catches from the small-scale trap fishery in Bandon Bay, Suratthani, Thailand, were monitored from 14 sites around the Bay, then disturbance to aquatic communities and catch assemblage were examined. At the same time, the hydrographical features of the bay were surveyed. The study was conducted throughout 2019 except in December, when a tropical cyclone made sampling impossible. In total, 17,373 animals from 118 species or species groups of aquatic animals were collected. The main target of the fishery, blue swimming crab Portunus pelagicus, contributed about 10% of the total catch in terms of number; meanwhile, another crab, Charybdis affinis, was the most dominant species (41% of total). W-statistics of Abundance-Biomass Comparison curves ranged between -0.025 and 0.031, indicating light disturbance to the communities in this fishing ground. The catch assemblage, based on number in catch composition, were divided into three main clusters and six sub-clusters by using the self-organizing map (SOM) technique. The SOM results showed that the catch assemblages differed based largely on temporal variation. The hydrographic features of Bandon Bay at times exhibited a layered structure and had strong spatial variation. The bay's current system was governed by motion of tidal currents; meanwhile, the circulation was governed by monsoonal wind and freshwater discharges. Tidal current was strong and ranged between approximately 0.6 m to 2.2 m. Water within the bay was always warmer than the outer sea. High water temperature was observed two times during the year: during monsoon transition 1 (April to May) and transition 2 (October). Salinity showed great spatial and temporal variation, differing by more than 5-10 ppt horizontally. It was possible to use these dynamic hydrological features of Bandon Bay to explain assemblage patterns of the trap-net catches.

Marine Pollution and Advances in Biomonitoring in Cartagena Bay in the Colombian Caribbean

Coastal zones sustain extensive biodiversity, support key processes for ocean dynamics, and influence the balance of the global environment. They also provide resources and services to communities, determine their culture, and are the basis for their economic growth. Cartagena Bay in the Colombian Caribbean is the place of the establishment of one of the country's main cities, which has a great historical and tourist attraction, and it is also the location of the main commercial port and a great variety of industries. Historically, it has been affected by several environmental impacts and intense pollution. This situation has gained the attention of different researchers, so herein is presented a literature review with a systematic approach using RStudio's bibliometrix on the presence of pollutants and the impact on biodiversity in recent decades, providing a critical analysis of the state of Cartagena Bay and its future needs to ensure its recovery and conservation. In addition, the socioeconomic dynamics related to the environmental state of Cartagena Bay are presented from the framework drivers, pressures, status, impacts, and responses (DPSIR). The update and critical understanding of the sources, fate, and effects of pollution are important not only for the knowledge of the status of this singular ecosystem but also to encourage future research and entrench evidence to support decision makers' actions. This review highlights that several pollutants that have been detected exceeding sediment quality guidelines, like As, Cd, Hg, and PAH, are also reported to bioaccumulate and cause damage throughout the trophic levels of the coastal environment. In addition, the potential use of sentinel species and biomarkers for their monitoring is discussed. Finally, the factors that cause pollution and threaten the state of the bay continue to exert pressure and impact; thus, there is a call for the further monitoring of this ecosystem and the strengthening of policies and regulations.

Coastal subsidence increases vulnerability to sea level rise over twenty first century in Cartagena, Caribbean Colombia

Cartagena is subsiding at a higher rate compared to that of global climate-driven sea level rise. We investigate the relative sea level rise (RSLR) and the influence of vertical land movements in Cartagena through the integration of different datasets, including tide gauge records, GPS geodetic subsidence data, and Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) observations of vertical motions. Results reveal a long-term rate (> 60 years) of RSLR of 5.98 ± 0.01 mm/yr. The last two decades exhibited an even greater rate of RSLR of 7.02 ± 0.06 mm/yr. GPS subsidence rates range between − 5.71 ± 2.18 and − 2.85 ± 0.84 mm/yr. InSAR data for the 2014–2020 period show cumulative subsidence rates of up to 72.3 mm. We find that geologically induced vertical motions represent 41% of the observed changes in RSLR and that subsidence poses a major threat to Cartagena’s preservation. The geodetic subsidence rates found would imply a further additional RSLR of 83 mm by 2050 and 225 mm by 2100. The Colombian government should plan for the future and serve as an example to similar cities across the Caribbean.
