Modified Jordanian zeolitic tuff in hydrocarbon removal from surface water

Treatment of pharmaceutical industry wastewater for water reuse in Jordan using hybrid constructed wetlands

Developing cost-efficient wastewater treatment technologies for safe reuse is essential, especially in developing countries simultaneously facing water scarcity. This study developed and evaluated a hybrid constructed wetlands (CWs) approach, incorporating tidal flow (TF) operation and utilising local Jordanian zeolite as a wetland substrate for real pharmaceutical industry wastewater treatment. Over 273 days of continuous monitoring, the results revealed that the first-stage TFCWs filled with either raw or modified zeolite performed significantly higher reductions in Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD, 58 %-60 %), Total Nitrogen (TN, 32 %-37 %), and Phosphate (PO4, 46 %-64 %) compared to TFCWs filled with normal sand. Water quality further improved after the second stage of horizontal subsurface flow CWs treatment, achieving log removals of 1.09-2.47 for total coliform and 1.89-2.09 for E. coli. With influent pharmaceutical concentrations ranging from 275 to 2000 μg/L, the zeolite-filled hybrid CWs achieved complete removal (>98 %) for ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, erythromycin, and enrofloxacin, moderate removal (43 %-81 %) for flumequine and lincomycin, and limited removal (<8 %) for carbamazepine and diclofenac. The overall accumulation of pharmaceuticals in plant tissue and substrate adsorption accounted for only 2.3 % and 4.3 %, respectively, of the total mass removal. Biodegradation of these pharmaceuticals (up to 61 %) through microbial-mediated processes or within plant tissues was identified as the key removal pathway. For both conventional pollutants and pharmaceuticals, modified zeolite wetland media could only slightly enhance treatment without a significant difference between the two treatment groups. The final effluent from all hybrid CWs complied with Jordanian treated industry wastewater reuse standards (category III), and systems filled with raw or modified zeolite achieved over 95 % of samples meeting the highest water reuse category I. This study provides evidence of using hybrid CWs technology as a nature-based solution to address water safety and scarcity challenges.

Pb (II) Recovery by Modified Tuffite: Adsorption, Desorption, and Kinetic Study

In this study, Pb (II) removal from wastewater was investigated using a modified vitric crystal tuffite with a BET surface area of 11.7 m2/g. For this purpose, tuffite was used in its natural and modified form with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Batch adsorption experiment was performed. The effects of contact time (0–90 min), adsorbent dosage (1–10 g/L), initial concentration (10–200 mg/L), and pH (2–12) on the removal of Pb (II) were investigated. The isotherm data were fitted to Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Redlich-Peterson isotherm models. Kinetic models such as pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intraparticle diffusion models were used. In order to optimize the adsorption system and investigate the kinetic behaviour of adsorption, nonlinear isotherm and kinetic models were used as well as linearized models. Error analyses were made in order to express the obtained results more accurately. pH 5 was the optimum value for adsorption. According to nonlinear isotherm model calculations, Bayburt stone (BS) and its modified form (MBS) had $q_{\max }$ values of 335 and 584 mg/g, respectively. The Freundlich model, with its high correlation coefficients of about 1.00, was found to be more suitable for the adsorption of Pb (II) to MBS. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model with mean $R^2$ and $k_2$ values of 0.997 and 0.0116 1/min, respectively, was found to be more appropriate. According to the regeneration studies, the maximum desorption efficiency was 97.8%. The thermodynamic equilibrium coefficients obtained at different temperatures and $\Delta G^{\text{o}}$ , $\Delta H^{\text{o}}$ , and $\Delta S^{\text{o}}$ values were observed as -21.4, 46.4, and 163 kJ/mol, respectively. These values indicate that the adsorption of Pb (II) on to MBS was endothermic and spontaneous process. BS and MBS were characterized by different instrumental analyses such as SEM, EDS, FTIR, and zeta potential measurements.

Removal of Carbamazepine onto Modified Zeolitic Tuff in Different Water Matrices: Batch and Continuous Flow Experiments

Carbamazepine (CBZ) is the most frequently detected pharmaceutical residues in aquatic environments effluent by wastewater treatment plants. Batch and column experiments were conducted to evaluate the removal of CBZ from ultra-pure water and wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent using raw zeolitic tuff (RZT) and surfactant modified zeolite (SMZ). Point zero net charge (pHpzc), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) were investigated for adsorbents to evaluate the physiochemical changes resulted from the modification process using Hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMA-Br). XRD and FTIR showed that the surfactant modification of RZT has created an amorphous surface with new alkyl groups on the surface. The pHpzc was determined to be approximately 7.9 for RZT and SMZ. The results indicated that the CBZ uptake by SMZ is higher than RZT in all sorption tests (>8 fold). Batch results showed that the sorption capacity of RZT and SMZ in WWTP effluent (0.029 and 0.25 mg/g) is higher than RZT and SMZ (0.018 and 0.14 mg/g) in ultrapure water (1.6–1.8 fold). Batch tests showed that the equilibrium time of CBZ removal in the WWTP matrix (47 h) is much longer than CBZ removal in ultrapure water. The sorption capacity of RZT & SMZ in WWTP effluent (0.03, 0.33 mg/g) is higher than RZT and SMZ (0.02 and 0.17 mg/g) in ultrapure water (1.5–2 fold) using column test. This study has clearly demonstrated that the performance of RZT and SMZ is more efficient for the removal of CBZ from realistic wastewater than ultrapure water. It is evident that the surfactant modification of RZT has enhanced the CBZ removal in both matrices.
