Can Citizen Science using social media inform sanitation planning?

Characterizing environmental pollution with civil complaints and social media data: A case of the Greater Taipei Area

Environmental pollution is a major cause of nuisance and ill health among urban residents. Complaints are traditionally self-reported through phone-based systems. Social media provide novel channels to detect pollution-related incidents; however, their reliability has not been sufficiently evaluated. This study aimed to compare pollution incidents expressed on Twitter with those extracted from phone-based systems and to identify the built environment and socioeconomic attributes that can predict the likelihood of pollution incidents. A total of 639,746 tweets were retrieved from the Greater Taipei Area in 2017 and 110,716 self-reported pollution incidents were extracted from the Public Nuisance Petition system during the same period. The results suggest that complaints collected from phone-based systems and Twitter were found to have correlated with each other spatially, albeit they differ in temporal profiles and by the proportion of pollution categories. Catering businesses and the entertainment activities they attract appear to be the main sources of pollution complaints and can be precisely captured by geotagged tweets. This can serve as a strong predictor for pollution incidents, more than traditional indicators such as population density or industrial activities, as suggested by earlier studies. Social media analytics, with their ability to monitor and analyze online discussions in a timely manner, can be a valuable supplement to existing phone-based pollution monitoring procedures. The methodologies developed in this study have the potential to support the proactive management of urban environmental pollution, in which resources can be prioritized in key areas to further enhance the quality of urban services.

Attainment of water and sanitation goals: a review and agenda for research

One-fourth of the global population is without basic drinking water and half of the global population lacks sanitation facilities. The attainment of water and sanitation targets is difficult due to administrative, operational, political, transborder, technical, and policy challenges. Conducted after 5 years from the adoption of sustainable development goals by the United Nations reviews the initiatives for improving access, quality, and affordability of water and sanitation. The bibliometric and thematic analyses are conducted to consolidate the outcomes of scientific papers on sustainable development goal 6 (SDG 6). Africa is struggling in relation with water and sanitation goals, having 17 countries with less than 40% basic drinking water facilities and 16 countries with less than 40% basic sanitation facilities. Globally, the attainment of water and sanitation goals will be depended on economic development, the development of revolutionary measures for wastewater treatment, and creating awareness related to water usage, water recycling, water harvesting, hygiene, and sanitation. Behavioral changes are also required for a new water culture and the attainment of water and sanitation goals by 2030.

Out of sight, out of mind: Understanding the sanitation crisis in global South cities

Global monitoring efforts do not provide a clear picture of the challenge of managing human waste at the city scale. Where cities do not provide universal access to publicly managed sanitation systems, households and communities find their own solutions resulting in a patchwork of approaches to removing human waste from places where people live. In dense urban environments, the absence of a coordinated approach can create serious public health problems. In the absence of comparable city-level data, we analyze primary and secondary data from 15 cities and 15 informal settlements in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Latin America. Across these regions, our study finds that 62 percent of human waste is not safely managed. We also find that, while many cities have a proportion of households connected to sewers, none of the 15 cities safely manage human waste at scale. In the absence of sewers, on-site fecal sludge management systems place enormous responsibility on households and private providers, and unaffordable sanitation options result in risky sanitation practices.

Characterizing low effort responding among young African adults recruited via Facebook advertising

Multiple studies have successfully used Facebook's advertising platform to recruit study participants. However, very limited methodological discussion exists regarding the magnitude of low effort responses from participants recruited via Facebook and African samples. This study describes a quasi-random study that identified and enrolled young adults in Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa between 22 May and 6 June 2020, based on an advertisement budget of 9,000.00 ZAR (US $521.44). The advertisements attracted over 900,000 views, 11,711‬ unique clicks, 1190 survey responses, and a total of 978 completed responses from young adults in the three countries during the period. Competition rates on key demographic characteristics ranged from 82% among those who attempted the survey to about 94% among eligible participants. The average cost of the advertisements was 7.56 ZAR (US $0.43) per survey participant, 8.68 ZAR (US $0.50) per eligible response, and 9.20 ZAR (US $0.53) per complete response. The passage rate on the attention checks varied from about 50% on the first question to as high as 76% on the third attention check question. About 59% of the sample passed all the attention checks, while 30% passed none of the attention checks. Results from a truncated Poisson regression model suggest that passage of attention checks was significantly associated with demographically relevant characteristics such as age and sex. Overall, the findings contribute to the growing body of literature describing the strengths and limitations of online sample frames, especially in developing countries.

Citizen Science on Twitter: Using Data Analytics to Understand Conversations and Networks

This paper presents a long-term study on how the public engage with discussions around citizen science and crowdsourcing topics. With progress in sensor technologies and IoT, our cities and neighbourhoods are increasingly sensed, measured and observed. While such data are often used to inform citizen science projects, it is still difficult to understand how citizens and communities discuss citizen science activities and engage with citizen science projects. Understanding these engagements in greater depth will provide citizen scientists, project owners, practitioners and the generic public with insights around how social media can be used to share citizen science related topics, particularly to help increase visibility, influence change and in general and raise awareness on topics. To the knowledge of the authors, this is the first large-scale study on understanding how such information is discussed on Twitter, particularly outside the scope of individual projects. The paper reports on the wide variety of topics (e.g., politics, news, ecological observations) being discussed on social media and a wide variety of network types and the varied roles played by users in sharing information in Twitter. Based on these findings, the paper highlights recommendations for stakeholders for engaging with citizen science topics.
