Fate of micropollutants in chemically enhanced primary treatment using recovered coagulants

Sustainable removal of caffeine and acetaminophen from water using biomass waste-derived activated carbon: Synthesis, characterization, and modelling

The removal of caffeine (CFN) and acetaminophen (ACT) from water using low-cost activated carbons prepared from artichoke leaves (AAC) and pomegranate peels (PAC) was reported in this paper. These activated carbons were characterized using various analytical techniques. The results showed that AAC and PAC had surface areas of 1203 and 1095 m2 g-1, respectively. The prepared adsorbents were tested for the adsorption of these pharmaceuticals in single and binary solutions. These experiments were performed under different operating conditions to evaluate the adsorption properties of these adsorbents to remove CFN and ACT. AAC and PAC showed maximum adsorption capacities of 290.86 and 258.98 mg g-1 for CFN removal, 281.18 and 154.99 mg g-1 for the ACT removal over a wide pH range. The experimental equilibrium adsorption data fitted to the Langmuir model and the kinetic data were correlated with the pseudo-second order model. AAC showed the best adsorption capacities for the removal of these pharmaceuticals in single systems and, consequently, it was tested for the simultaneous removal of these pollutants in binary solutions. The simultaneous adsorption of these compounds on AAC was improved using the central composite design and response surface methodology. The results indicated an antagonistic effect of CFN on the ACT adsorption. AAC regeneration was also analyzed and discussed. A statistical physics model was applied to describe the adsorption orientation of the tested pollutants on both activated carbon samples. It was concluded that AAC is a promising adsorbent for the removal of emerging pollutants due to its low cost and reusability properties.

Chlorhexidine residues in sludge from municipal wastewater treatment plants: analytical determination and toxicity evaluation

In this work, a procedure for the sensitive and selective determination of chlorhexidine in sludge from municipal sewage treatment plants (STPs) based on matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) and liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) was optimized and validated. Analysis of sewage sludge samples, obtained from different STPs in Northwest Spain from 2018 to 2021, showed that chlorhexidine was ubiquitous in this environmental compartment with concentrations between 0.3 and 16 µg g⁻¹. The toxicity of this pollutant was assessed in in vitro assays considering three different model organisms: Candida albicans, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus. C. albicans was the most sensitive of the tested microorganisms to chlorhexidine with a lethal threshold concentration of 0.1 mg L⁻¹. Thus, the lowest observed sludge residue was 3 times higher than the acute toxicity threshold measured for C. albicans. Moreover, E. coli and S. aureus were also affected at chlorhexidine concentrations around 1.8 mg L⁻¹ and 0.5 mg L⁻¹, respectively. So, chlorhexidine residues might affect the population of microorganisms existing in STPs. In addition, the potential phytotoxicity of the compound was evaluated with germination experiments using different model seeds. At the evaluated dose (10 µg g⁻¹ dried soil), chlorhexidine did not affect the germination of Sorghum saccharatum, Lepidium sativum, or Sinapis alba seeds. Thus, amending agriculture soils with chlorhexidine containing sludge is unlikely to affect the germination of plants.

Removal efficiency of organic micropollutants in successive wastewater treatment steps in a full-scale wastewater treatment plant: Bench-scale application of tertiary treatment processes to improve removal of organic micropollutants persisting after secondary treatment

The goal of this study was to investigate the occurrence and removal of 52 organic micropollutants (OMPs) during each wastewater treatment step in a full-scale wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Pharmaceuticals such as metformin, acetaminophen, caffeine, ibuprofen, cimetidine and naproxen were found with high average concentrations in the influent. Most OMPs were not affected by the primary treatment (removal <10%), while secondary biological treatment contributed the most to overall removal of the OMPs. Among the three lanes of the secondary treatment of the WWTP, a combined anaerobic-anoxic-oxic process followed by a membrane bioreactor (A2O-MBR) process effectively facilitated removal of the OMPs (96%) using a different redox: a conventional activated sludge (CAS) process exhibited removal of approximately 85% of total concentrations of the OMPs, while a Modified Ludzack-Ettinger (MLE) process achieved approximately 92.1% removal. Removal of more than 50% of the concentrations of 13 targeted OMPs was observed in the secondary effluent (except for metformin showing only 3.8% removal) via adsorption with powdered activated carbon (PAC) as additional tertiary treatment. Metformin, inadequately removed by additional tertiary treatments, was effectively removed by a biological activated carbon (BAC) process, reaching a removal efficiency of 90.5%. To increase the removal of the amounts and types of OMPs with various physico-chemical properties, hybrid processes through a combination of diverse advanced treatment should be tailored to WWTPs.
