Burning in southwestern Brazilian Amazonia, 2016-2019

The Hell of Wildfires: The Impact on Wildlife and Its Conservation and the Role of the Veterinarian

Wildfires are common occurrences worldwide that can destroy vast forest areas and kill numerous animals in a few hours. Climate change, rising global temperatures, precipitation, the introduction of exotic species of plants (e.g., eucalyptus), intensive agriculture, and deforestation have increased the number of fires and their intensity and destructive power. Nearly 4% of the global land surface (30–46 million/km2) is burned annually. There are many studies regarding the impact of wildfires on ecosystems, flora, domestic animals, and humans. Even though wildfires are a common and recurrent problem around the world, most of the time, they are a neglected issue, especially regarding wildlife. The information available is scarce and dispersed across several bibliographical references, and the veterinarian teams, most of the time, need to be trained to act in these situations. In this brief review, we describe different species’ behavior during a wildfire, the effects on the ecosystem, and the socioeconomic impact on the region. From a veterinarian’s perspective, we list the major injuries that are expected to be observed and how to proceed. In conclusion, we discuss better prevention and response measures in a wildfire scenario. This information can be used by veterinarians and all the entities involved in the prevention and combat of wildfires, and the general public has an important role in these situations.

Monogeneans of Colossoma macropomum (Cuvier, 1818) (Characiformes: Serrasalmidae) farmed in the state of Acre, Amazon (Brazil)

Parasitism of Colossoma macropomum is of particular concern because it is the most commonly farmed native fish species in Brazil. Nevertheless, the parasitic fauna of this species in the state of Acre has been little studied. For this reason, an evaluation was made of the parasitic fauna of farmed C. macropomum in the municipality of Rio Branco in southwestern Amazon. Four monogenean species were found in the 122 fish examined: Anacanthorus spathulatus, Linguadactyloides brinkmanni, Notozothecium janauachensis and Mymarothecium boegeri. The most prevalent species was A. spathulatus (50%), followed by N. janauachensis (44.3%), M. boegeri (20.5%) and L. brinkmanni (9.0%). These results are the first data on the ecological indices of monogeneans in tambaqui in the state of Acre and will be useful for future comparisons of the influence of environmental factors on the parasite-host relationship.

Assessing Spatial Variation of PBL Height and Aerosol Layer Aloft in São Paulo Megacity Using Simultaneously Two Lidar during Winter 2019

This work presents the use of two elastic lidar systems to assess the horizontal variation of the PBL height (PBLH) and aerosol layer aloft in the São Paulo Megacity. These two lidars performed simultaneous measurements 10.7 km apart in a highly urbanized and relatively flat area of São Paulo for two winter months of 2019. The results showed that the PBLH differences display diurnal variation that depends on the PBL during daytime growth phases. Cloud and sea breeze effects control most of PBLH variation. In the absence of cloud and sea breeze, the maximum difference (~300 m) occurs in the rapid development stage and is due to topographic effects. When the PBL approaches its maximum daily value, it tends to level off with respect to the topography. In addition, it was presented a method that combines elastic lidar (to detect an aerosol layer) and satellite data (to classify such a layer from Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) and Aerosol Index (AI) information) for the detection of biomass burning events. This methodology demonstrated that the variations caused by Biomass Burning in AOD and AI enable both the detection of aerosol plumes originating from biomass burning and the identification of their origin.

Forest Canopy Changes in the Southern Amazon during the 2019 Fire Season Based on Passive Microwave and Optical Satellite Observations

Canopy dynamics associated with fires in tropical forests play a critical role in the terrestrial carbon cycle and climate feedbacks. The aim of this study was to characterize forest canopy dynamics in the southern Amazon during the 2019 fire season (July–October) using passive microwave-based vegetation optical depth (VOD) and three optical-based indices. First, we found that precipitation during July–October 2019 was close to the climatic means, suggesting that there were no extreme hydrometeorological events in 2019 and that fire was the dominant factor causing forest canopy anomalies. Second, based on the active fire product (MCD14ML), the total number of active fires over each grid cell was calculated for each month. The number of active fires during the fire season in 2019 was above average, particularly in August and September. Third, we compared the anomalies of VOD and optical-based indices (the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), the enhanced vegetation index (EVI), and the normalized burn ratio (NBR)) against the spatiotemporal distribution of fires during July–October 2019. Spatially, the location with a concentrated distribution of significant negative VOD anomalies was matched with the grid cells with fire activities, whereas the concentrated distribution of strong negative anomalies in optical-based indices were found in both burned and unburned grid cells. When we focused on the temporal pattern over the grid cells with fire activity, the VOD and the optical-based indices behaved similarly from July to October 2019, i.e., the magnitude of negative anomalies became stronger with increased fire occurrences and reached the peak of negative anomalies in September before decreasing in October. A discrepancy was observed in the magnitude of negative anomalies of the optical-based indices and the VOD; the magnitude of optical-based indices was larger than the VOD in August–September and recovered much faster than the VOD over the grid cells with relatively low fire activity in October. The most likely reason for their different responses is that the VOD represents the dynamics of both photosynthetic (leaf) and nonphotosynthetic (branches) biomass, whereas optical-based indices are only sensitive to photosynthetic (leaf) active biomass, which recovers faster. Our results demonstrate that VOD can detect the spatiotemporal of canopy dynamics caused by fire and postfire canopy biomass recovery over high-biomass rainforest, which enables more comprehensive assessments, together with classic optical remote sensing approaches.
