The prediction of partial-nitrification-anammox performance in real industrial wastewater based on granular size

Critical role of extracellular DNA in the establishment and maintenance of anammox biofilms

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) has been widely used for the sustainable removal of nitrogen from wastewater. Extracellular DNA (exDNA), as one of the main components of biofilms, not only determines the initial formation process, but also allows the three-dimensional structure to be maintained. Since the effects of exDNA on anammox biofilm formation are still poorly understood, this study elucidated the effects of exDNA on different stages of anammox biofilm establishment and maintenance under static conditions and its mechanism. The results revealed that exDNA mainly affected the maintenance stage of anammox biofilm formation. Compared with the absence of exDNA, nitrogen removal efficiency in the presence of exDNA was 6.17 % higher; the number of bacteria cells attached to the carrier was 2.23 times that in the absence of exDNA. The spatiotemporal distribution of bacteria was revealed by fluorescence in situ hybridization. After 30 days, the relative abundances of anammox in biofilms were 6.19 % and 0.4 % in the presence and absence of exDNA, respectively, indicating its positive role in anammox bacteria (AnAOB) adhesion and biofilm formation. The presence of exDNA in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) promotes the synthesis of proteins and soluble microbial products. According to the extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (X - DLVO) theory, the presence of exDNA also reduced the Lewis acid-base interaction energy and created favorable thermodynamic conditions for AnAOB adhesion. These findings advance our understanding of the role of exDNA in anammox-mediated biofilm formation and offer insights into the mechanism of exDNA in the establishment and maintenance stages.

Challenges of aerobic granular sludge utilization: Fast start-up strategies and cationic pollutant removal

Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) is a self-aggregated microorganism consortium with pollutant removal properties. The aim of this work is to study and review the application of aerobic granules for water treatment with special focus on new applications and methodologies. Carbon-nitrogen containing pollutants are the classic targets of AGS technology. Carbon and nitrogen removal of AGS are classified as a biodegradation process. More recently, the AGS granules have been studied as sorbent materials for wastewater treatment. In particular, the sorption of cationic pollutants has been studied through biosorption and bioaccumulation mechanisms without distinguishing when one or the other process is involved. AGS conformation made them suitable for complex wastewater treatment. Indeed, several studies have demonstrated the removal of polyvalent cationic pollutants even with higher capacity than conventional sorbent materials. However, this was achieved almost exclusively for synthetic substrates, with single cation evaluation and using in some cases only qualitative measures. For successful industrial AGS application in complex substrates, it is necessary to evaluate and demonstrate the technology in real industrial conditions and reduce the currently long start-up times which limits its utility. Two new strategies have been proposed: autoinducer molecules and the production of artificial granular from common active sludge with commercial alginate. Finally, the increase of research on AGS cations assimilation properties will allow a new point of view, where granules will be materials for the recovery of valuable metals from industrial wastewater streams.

Effects of hydroxylamine on treatment of anaerobic digestate of pig manure in partial nitrification-anaerobic ammonium oxidation

Partial nitrification-anaerobic ammonium oxidation (PN-anammox) was started up within 40 days by bioaugmentation and aeration control, and its performance in the treatment of anaerobic digestate of pig manure (ADPM) was evaluated. Inhibitors in ADPM decreased the nitrogen removal rate (NRR) by 0.24 g N/L/d. The effect and mechanism of hydroxylamine (NH₂OH) alleviation of PN-anammox inhibition during ADPM treatment were investigated. As an intermediate product of anammox and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, NH₂OH strengthened energy metabolism, improved the activity and abundance of functional bacteria, and eliminated miscellaneous bacteria, increasing the average NRR by 31%. However, the average nitrous oxide emission was increased by 10.1% via hydroxylamine oxidation. The results showed that synergy and competition among nitrogen-transforming microorganisms were crucial for NRR and that NH₂OH played an essential role in maintaining efficient operation. This study lays a foundation for restoring PN-anammox for treating livestock wastewater.

A critical review of exogenous additives for improving the anammox process

Anammox achieves chemoautotrophic nitrogen removal under anaerobic and anoxic conditions and is a low-carbon wastewater biological nitrogen removal process with broad application potential. However, the physiological limitations of AnAOB often cause problems in engineering applications, such as a long start-up time, unstable operation, easily inhibited reactions, and difficulty in long-term strain preservation. Exogenous additives have been considered an alternative strategy to address these issues by retaining microbes, shortening the doubling time of AnAOB and improving functional enzyme activity. This paper reviews the role of carriers, biochar, intermediates, metal ions, reaction substrates, redox buffers, cryoprotectants and organics in optimizing anammox. The pathways and mechanisms of exogenous additives, which are explored to solve problems, are systematically summarized and analyzed in this article according to operational performance, functional enzyme activity, and microbial abundance to provide helpful information for the engineering application of anammox.
