Hexavalent chromium reduction by zero-valent magnesium particles in column systems

Synthesis of ZnO immobilized on recycled polyethylene terephtalate for sonocatalytic removal of Cr(VI) from synthetic, drinking waters and electroplating wastewater

In this study, Cr(VI) was removed sonocatalytically by the zinc oxide nanoparticle coated with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fabricated through a facile co-precipitation method. The crystal structure, functional groups on the surface, morphology, surface composition and oxidation states of the nanomaterials were investigated by XRD, FTIR, SEM, EDX and XPS techniques. Environmental parameters including solution pH, catalyst dose, hexavalent chromium concentration, H₂O₂ content, purging gases, organic compounds and type and anions strength on the sonotocatalytic removal of Cr(VI) were also investigated. Additionally, the contribution of each process, reusability, Cr(VI) reduction from actual water and electroplating wastewater were evaluated. Under the optimal conditions, [Cr(VI)]₀=20 mg/L, nanocomposite loading=1.6 g/L and pH=5, 99.92% of Cr(VI) was removed within 60 min. By increaing, Cr(VI) concentration (5-50 mg/L), k_obs decreased to values between 0.1498 and 0.0063 min^-1 and the calculated electrical energy per order (E_Eo) increased from 148.68 to 3535.24 kWh.m^-3, respectively. The presence of purging gases, organic compounds and ionic strength negatively affected Cr(VI) reduction. Examination of radical scavengers showed that the most active radicals in Cr(VI) removal were O₂^•- and h⁺. The removal of the Cr(VI) using the US/ZnO-PET method (99.92%) was higher than that of the US/ZnO method (70.78%). The catalyst activity was well maintained up to eight consecutive cycles. In addition, the removal efficiency was approximately 72.23 and 68.55% for drinking water and real electroplating wastewater samples, respectively. The results of toxicity in the sonotocatalytic removal of Cr(VI) by Daphnia magna showed LC₅₀ and toxicity unit (TU) 48 h, which was equal to 81.46 and 1.227 vol percent.

Nitrate Removal by Zero-Valent Metals: A Comprehensive Review

Nitrate is a widespread water contaminant that can pose environmental and health risks. Various conventional techniques can be applied for the removal of nitrate from water and wastewater, such as biological denitrification, ion exchange, nanofiltration, and reverse osmosis. Compared to traditional methods, the chemical denitrification through zero-valent metals offers various advantages, such as lower costs, simplicity of management, and high efficiencies. The most utilized material for chemical denitrification is zero-valent iron (ZVI). Aluminium (ZVA), magnesium (ZVM), copper (ZVC), and zinc (ZVZ) are alternative zero-valent metals that are studied for the removal of nitrate from water as well as from aqueous solutions. To the best of our knowledge, a comprehensive work on the use of the various zero-valent materials that are employed for the removal of nitrate is still missing. Therefore, in the present review, the most recent papers concerning the use of zero-valent materials for chemical denitrification were analysed. The studies that dealt with zero-valent iron were discussed by considering microscopic (mZVI) and nanoscopic (nZVI) forms. For each Fe0 form, the effects of the initial pH, the presence or absence of dissolved oxygen, the initial nitrate concentration, the temperature, and the dissolved ions on the nitrate removal process were separately evaluated. Finally, the different materials that were employed as support for the nanoparticles were examined. For the other zero-valent metals tested, a detailed description of the works present in the literature was carried out. A comparison of the various features that are related to each considered material was also made.

Removal and recycling of hexavalent chromium from alkaline wastewater via a new ferrite process to produce the valuable chromium ferrite

Current technologies for removal of Cr(VI) are generally fit for acidic wastewater. In this study, a new ferrite process for removal and recycling of Cr(VI) from alkaline wastewater to produce the valuable chromium ferrite has been developed. The results show that this new ferrite method is a one-step process which can be divided into two successive reactions including Cr(VI) reduction to form coprecipitation (Cr_0.25Fe_0.75(OH)₃) and subsequently magnetic conversion of Cr_0.25Fe_0.75(OH)₃ induced by Fe²⁺ under the same alkaline condition. The total Fe/Cr mole ratio of 5:1 is at least required for the chromium ferrite transformation. Increasing temperature and pH can enhance the interaction of Fe²⁺ with Cr_0.25Fe_0.75(OH)₃ and further promote the formation of chromium ferrite, while suppressing the generation of nonmagnetic by-product goethite. Almost pure chromium ferrite is formed under proposed optimum conditions (Fe/Cr = 7:1, 65 °C and pH of 9) with Cr(VI) removal ratio around 100%. The Cr(VI) remained in the filtrate can be reduced to 0.01 mg/L which is much lower than the limits concentration for surface water (≤0.05 mg/L). The chromium ferrite product whose molecular formula can be expressed as Cr_0.5-xFe_2.5+xO₄ (where 0 ≤ x < 0.5) presents good magnetic properties and has the potential to be recycled as a useful material.

Effect of Lattice Substitution on Adsorption of Hexavalent Chromium by Montmorillonite, Nontronite, and Beidellite

This work aims to evaluate the effect of lattice substitution on adsorption of hexavalent chromium by three kinds of typical clay minerals, and its common isomorph via experiments and calculations were performed based on density functional theory. The experiments (25 °C, 4 h, pH = 4 and without stirring) confirmed an order of adsorption capacity as follows: Montmorillonite (12 mg/g) > Nontronite (9 mg/g) > Beidellite (8 mg/g). Accordingly, the Mulliken populations, density of states, and band structures of the mineral models with the structural Al, Mg, Fe(II), Fe(III), and Al (in tetrahedrons) on behalf of five species of isomorph were calculated. The calculation results explain the differences between hexavalent chromium adsorption capacity of five kinds of isomorph by means of atom, key populations, overlapping valence electron orbitals, and the variation of energy band. However, no overlapping orbitals were observed in the adsorption system with structural Mg. It is implied that the structural Mg has little influence of hexavalent chromium adsorption. In conclusion, our study contributes to achieving a better understanding of modified clay minerals materials applications.

Methylene blue adsorption on thermo plasma expanded graphite in a multilayer column system

The removal of dyes from wastewater is an important topic in environmental applications. Methylene blue (MB) is one of the most worrisome compounds, as it is widespread and used in many industrial activities. Adsorption represents an effective technique for the removal of this contaminant. Thermo plasma expanded graphite (TPEG) is an industrial material characterized by a fibrous morphology, a very low density and overlapped graphene layers. TPEG has a higher specific surface compared to conventional thermo-expanded graphite and it can establish effective attractive forces with charged pollutants. These properties make TPEG a very promising adsorbent material. In the present work, TPEG was tested in an innovative multilayer column system to treat MB contaminated solutions. Several batch experiments were carried out by varying pH, initial MB concentration and temperature. The optimal adsorption performance was assessed at pH 11, around which the TPEG assumed the maximum negative charge. Based on these results, the adsorption mechanism appeared to be related mainly to electrostatic interactions. At room temperature, the greatest amount of MB adsorbed on TPEG was detected by treating solutions with an initial concentration of 30 mg_MB/L. The temperature increase from 20 to 40 °C caused an enhanced adsorption capacity when concentrations higher than 10 mg_MB/L were treated. The adsorption trends were accurately described by a pseudo-second order kinetic law and the adsorption isotherms at 20 and 40 °C were found to follow both the features of Freundlich and Langmuir models. The adsorption capacity was estimated to reach threshold values around 95 mg_MB/g_TPEG and 265 mg_MB/g_TPEG at 20 and 40°C, respectively. The Gibbs energy change (ΔG°) was calculated to about -7.80 kJ/mol, which proved that the process is spontaneous from a thermodynamic point of view. Finally, it was verified that TPEG can be efficiently reused 5 times after a simple chemical regeneration phase with HCl.
