Single and joint inhibitory effect of nitrophenols on activated sludge

Electrochemical treatment of simulated wastewater containing nitroaromatic compound with cobalt-titanium electrode

The Co3O4-Ti electrodes were successfully prepared via calcination method to degrade nitrogen-containing (TNP) simulate wastewater in this reaserch. SEM and EDS were employed to analyze the morphology and element composition on Co3O4-Ti electrode, revealing the successful load of cobalt element. Then the electrochemical performance was evaluated by CV and indicated a better redox performance of electrode. Furthermore, five factors as processing time (A), electrolyte concentration (B), pH (C), initial concentration of TNP (D), and current density (E) were systematic studied in electrical treatment process. The removal rate of TN could be 77%. After the optimization work by RSM, the removal rate of TN raised up to 81% with the condition as: A of 180 min, B of 0.05 M, C of 3, D of 400 mg L-1, and E of 20 mA cm-2. The sequence of significants is: C > D > A > E > B. Mechanism analysis revealed that the entire process could be divided into two stages. In the first stage, organic nitrogen compounds were converted into inorganic nitrogen species, such as NO3-N. The oxidation and reduction would react owing to the generating of ·OH at second stage in order to turn the NO3-N into NO2-N, NH4-N or N2. The activation of ·OH on the surface of Co3O4-Ti electrode possesses the exothermic nature with transition theory. The energy calculation of 1.168 eV indicated these reactions could occur spontaneously.

Effect of carbon source conditions on response of nitrifying sludge to 3,5-dichlorophenol

Nutritional conditions of activated sludge had a significant influence on nitrification inhibition response. This study comprehensively investigated the inhibition of 3,5-dichlorophenol (3,5-DCP) on nitrification of activated sludge with different C/N ratios and carbon source types. The corresponding extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), microbial communities and functional genes were analysed. The results indicated that the addition of carbon source would reduce the nitrification activity and nitrification sensitivity to 3,5-DCP, and the order of the EC₅₀ was sequenced as sodium acetate > methanol > glucose. The response mechanisms of activated sludge under diverse carbon source conditions to 3,5-DCP were summarised as follows. When the 3,5-DCP content was increased from 0.4 mg/L to 0.8 mg/L, the protein content increased from 73.2 ± 2.6 mg/g SS ∼122.4 ± 4 mg/g SS to 92.2 ± 11.2 mg/g SS ∼130.8 ± 9.6 mg/g SS in the tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS). The increase of protein content was attributed to cellular self-protection mechanisms. Furthermore, fluorescence characteristic analysis revealed that tyrosine and tryptophan in loosely bound EPS (LB-EPS) might account for higher EC₅₀ in activated sludge fed with methanol and sodium acetate. In addition, the redundancy analyses (RDA) showed activated sludge with organics enriched the resistant species, such as Proteobacteria and Patescibacteria, while activated sludge without organics enriched the sensitive species, such as Ferruginibacter. Finally, the nitrification genes were found to be consistent with nitrification activity. Thus, the findings provide new insights into nitrification inhibition mechanism under different carbon source conditions.

Recent advances in biological removal of nitroaromatics from wastewater

Various nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) released into the environment cause potential threats to humans and animals. Biological treatment is valued for cost-effectiveness, environmental friendliness, and availability when treating wastewater containing NACs. Considering the significance and wide use of NACs, this review focuses on recent advances in biological treatment systems for NACs removal from wastewater. Meanwhile, factors affecting biodegradation and methods to enhance removal efficiency of NACs are discussed. The selection of biological treatment system needs to consider NACs loading and cost, and its performance is affected by configuration and operation strategy. Generally, sequential anaerobic-aerobic biological treatment systems perform better in mineralizing NACs and removing co-pollutants. Future research on mechanism exploration of NACs biotransformation and performance optimization will facilitate the large-scale application of biological treatment systems.

Responses of anammox to long-term p-nitrophenol stress: From apparent and microscopic phenomena to mechanism simulation

p-Nitrophenol is usually present in ammonia-rich wastewaters produced by some chemical plants. In this work, the response of anammox process to long-term p-nitrophenol stress was investigated. The changes in the efficiency, sludge characteristics, and microorganisms of the anammox system under different levels of p-nitrophenol stress were examined, and the potential stress mechanisms of p-nitrophenol on anammox were further speculated. The results showed that 10-50 mg/L p-nitrophenol had no obvious impact on nitrogen removal efficiency, but stimulated the secretion of more extracellular polymeric substances. 60 mg/L p-nitrophenol caused the nitrogen removal efficiency to decrease by 64.5% in 5 days. Long-term exposure to p-nitrophenol led to 8.6% reduction in Candidatus_Kuenenia abundance and 18.4%-35.9% decrease in the expression level of anammox bacterial functional genes. Molecular simulation indicated that p-nitrophenol could bind to key enzymes of anammox. This study provides new insights into the treatment of wastewater containing p-nitrophenol or phenol by anammox.
