Acid rain reduced soil carbon emissions and increased the temperature sensitivity of soil respiration: A comprehensive meta-analysis

Soil respiration the second-largest carbon flux in terrestrial ecosystems, has been extensively studied across a wide range of biomes. Surprisingly, no consensus exist on how acid rain (AR) impacts the spatiotemporal pattern of soil respiration. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis using 318 soil respiration and 263 soil respiration temperature sensitivity (Q10) data points obtained from 48 studies to assess the impact of AR on soil respiration components and their Q10. The results showed that AR reduced soil total respiration (Rt) and soil autotrophic respiration (Ra) by 7.41 % and 20.75 %, respectively. As the H+ input increased, the response rates of Ra to AR (RR-Ra) and soil heterotrophic respiration (Rh) to AR (RR-Rh) decreased and increased, respectively. With increased AR duration, the RR-Ra increased, whereas the RR-Rh did not change. AR increased the Q10 of Rt (Rt-Q10) and Rh (Rh-Q10) by 1.92 % and 9.47 %, respectively, and decreased the Q10 of Ra (Ra-Q10) by 2.77 %. Increased mean annual temperature, mean annual precipitation, and initial soil organic carbon increased the response rate of Ra-Q10 to AR (RR-Ra-Q10) and decreased the response rate of Rh-Q10 to AR (RR-Rh-Q10). However, as the AR frequency and initial soil pH increased, both RR-Ra-Q10 and RR-Rh-Q10 also increased. In summary, AR decreased Rt but increased Q10, likely due to soil acidification (soil pH decreased by 7.84 %), reducing plant root biomass (decreased by 5.67 %) and soil microbial biomass (decreased by 5.67 %), changing microbial communities (increased fungi to bacteria ratio of 15.91 %), and regulated by climate, vegetation, soil and AR regimes. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to reveal the large-scale, varied response patterns of soil respiration components and their Q10 to AR. It highlights the importance of applying the reductionism theory in soil respiration research to enhance our understanding of soil carbon cycling processes with in the context of global climate change.

Effects of Simulated Acid Rain on Photosynthesis in Pinus massoniana and Cunninghamia lanceolata in Terms of Prompt Fluorescence, Delayed Fluorescence, and Modulated Reflection at 820 nm

The effects of simulated acid rain (SAR) on the photosynthetic performance of subtropical coniferous species have not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, we treated two coniferous species, Pinus massoniana (PM) and Cunninghamia lanceolata (CL), with four gradients of SAR and then analyzed their photosynthetic activities through measurements of gas exchange, prompt fluorescence (PF), delayed fluorescence (DF), and modulated reflection at 820 nm (MR820). Gas exchange analysis indicated that the decrease in the net photosynthetic rate (Pn) in PM and CL was unrelated to stomatal factors. For the PF transients, SAR induced positive K-band and L-band, a significant reduction in photosynthetic performance index (PIABS), the quantum yield of electron transfer per unit cross-section (ETO/CSm), and maximal photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm). Analysis of the MR820 kinetics showed that the re-reduction kinetics of PSI reaction center (P700+) and plastocyanin (PC+) became slower and occurred at later times under SAR treatment. For the DF signals, a decrease in the amplitude of the DF induction curve reduced the maximum value of DF (I1). These results suggested that SAR obstructed photosystem II (PSII) donor-side and acceptor-side electron transfer capacity, impaired the connectivity between PSII and PSI, and destroyed the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC). However, PM was better able to withstand SAR stress than CL, likely because of the activation of a protective mechanism.

Separating Daily 1 km PM2.5 Inorganic Chemical Composition in China since 2000 via Deep Learning Integrating Ground, Satellite, and Model Data

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) chemical composition has strong and diverse impacts on the planetary environment, climate, and health. These effects are still not well understood due to limited surface observations and uncertainties in chemical model simulations. We developed a four-dimensional spatiotemporal deep forest (4D-STDF) model to estimate daily PM2.5 chemical composition at a spatial resolution of 1 km in China since 2000 by integrating measurements of PM2.5 species from a high-density observation network, satellite PM2.5 retrievals, atmospheric reanalyses, and model simulations. Cross-validation results illustrate the reliability of sulfate (SO42-), nitrate (NO3-), ammonium (NH4+), and chloride (Cl-) estimates, with high coefficients of determination (CV-R2) with ground-based observations of 0.74, 0.75, 0.71, and 0.66, and average root-mean-square errors (RMSE) of 6.0, 6.6, 4.3, and 2.3 μg/m3, respectively. The three components of secondary inorganic aerosols (SIAs) account for 21% (SO42-), 20% (NO3-), and 14% (NH4+) of the total PM2.5 mass in eastern China; we observed significant reductions in the mass of inorganic components by 40-43% between 2013 and 2020, slowing down since 2018. Comparatively, the ratio of SIA to PM2.5 increased by 7% across eastern China except in Beijing and nearby areas, accelerating in recent years. SO42- has been the dominant SIA component in eastern China, although it was surpassed by NO3- in some areas, e.g., Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region since 2016. SIA, accounting for nearly half (∼46%) of the PM2.5 mass, drove the explosive formation of winter haze episodes in the North China Plain. A sharp decline in SIA concentrations and an increase in SIA-to-PM2.5 ratios during the COVID-19 lockdown were also revealed, reflecting the enhanced atmospheric oxidation capacity and formation of secondary particles.

Response and driving factors of soil enzyme activity related to acid rain: a meta-analysis

As a global pollution, acid rain can significantly alter soil physicochemical and biochemical processes, but our knowledge of how acid rain affects soil enzyme activity is still limited. To quantify the overall magnitude and direction of the response of soil enzyme activity to acid rain, we conducted a linear mixed model-based meta-analysis of 40 articles. Our analysis revealed that acid rain decreased enzyme activity by an average of 4.87%. Soil dehydrogenase and protease activities were particularly sensitive to acid rain, with significant inhibitions observed. The effect of acid rain was moderated by acid rain intensity (i.e., H+ addition rate, total H+ added, and acid rain pH) and soil fraction (i.e., rhizosphere and bulk soil). Structural equation modelling further revealed that acid rain suppressed soil microbial biomass by acidifying the soil and that the reduction in microbial biomass directly led to the inhibition of enzyme activity in bulk soil. However, the enzyme activity in the rhizosphere soil was not affected by acid rain due to the rhizosphere effect, which was also not impacted by the decreased soil pH induced by acid rain in rhizosphere. Our study gives an insight into how bulk soil enzyme activity is impacted by acid rain and highlights the need to incorporate rhizosphere processes into acid rain-terrestrial ecosystem models.

An overview of the direct and indirect effects of acid rain on plants: Relationships among acid rain, soil, microorganisms, and plants

Acid rain (AR) causes numerous environmental problems and complex negative effects on plants globally. Many studies have previously reported on direct effects of AR or its depositional substances on plant injury and performance. However, few studies have addressed the indirect effects of AR on plants as mediated by soil microorganisms and the abiotic environment of the soil rhizosphere. The indirect effects (e.g., AR → soil microorganisms→plants) need greater attention, because acidic deposition not only affects the distribution, composition, abundance, function, and activity of plant-associated microorganisms, but also influences the dynamics of some substances in the soil in a way that may be harmful to plants. Therefore, this review not only focused on the direct effects of AR on plant performance, growth, and biomass allocations from a whole-plant perspective, but also addressed the pathway of AR-soil chemical characteristics-plants, which explains how soil solute leaching and acidification by AR will reduce the availability of essential nutrients and increase the availability of heavy metals for plants, affecting carbon and nitrogen cycles. Mainly, we evaluated the AR-soil microorganisms-plants pathway by: 1) synthesizing the potential roles of soil microbes in alleviating soil acidic stress on plants and the adverse effects of AR on plant-associated soil microorganisms; 2) exploring how plant mycorrhizal types affect the detection of AR effect on plants. The meta-analysis showed that the effects of AR-induced pH on leaf chlorophyll content, plant height, and plant root biomass were dependent on plant mycorrhizal types. Some possible reasons for different synergy between mycorrhizal symbiotic types and plants were discussed. Future research relating to the effects of AR on plants should focus on the combined direct and indirect effects to evaluate how AR affects plant performance comprehensively.

Acid rain reduces plant-photosynthesized carbon sequestration and soil microbial network complexity

Acid rain threatens the structure and function of terrestrial ecosystems; however, the mechanisms by which acid rain affects the photosynthesized carbon (C) fluxes and soil microbial communities are far less understood, thus impeding accurate projections of regional C flux in the plant-soil-atmosphere system. In this study, we performed an isotopic ¹³C labeling experiment to trace C footprints in a maize-soil system under acid rain pollution (pH 4.5 and 3.0; SO₄^2-/NO₃^-= 2:1). Our results showed that acid rain exerted a negligible effect on total plant biomass as well as shoot biomass. Acid rain of pH 3.0 inhibited plant ¹³C assimilation and the flow of fixed ¹³C to the soil. Acid rain decreased soil total C and organic nitrogen (N) but increased inorganic N (i.e., nitrate-N) content. The acid rain of pH 3.0 enhanced soil bulk density, led to soil acidification, and promoted soil microbial diversity. However, acid rain reduced the connectivity and complexity of soil microbial network. Soil ¹³C content was mainly regulated by soil pH, ammonium-N, and root biomass. Our findings demonstrated that acid rain reduces photosynthesized C sequestration of maize-soil system and soil microbial taxa interactions.

Changes in the composition of rhizosphere bacterial communities in response to soil types and acid rain

It is widely known how acid rain negatively impacts plant physiology. However, the magnitude of these effects may depend on soil types. Although the response of aboveground parts has received much attention, the effects of soil types and acid rain on underground processes are yet to be studied, specifically with respect to the composition and diversity of bacterial communities in the rhizosphere. Based on a high throughput sequencing approach, this study examined how different soil types, acid rain of different pH, and interactions between the two factors influenced the growth and rhizosphere bacterial communities of Jatropha curcas L. The present study pointed out that the soil pH, total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), total potassium (TK), and total organic carbon/total nitrogen (C/N) were more related to soil type than to acid rain. The growth of J. curcas aboveground was mainly affected by acid rain, while the underground growth was mainly influenced by soil type. Changes in bacterial abundance indicated that the genera (Burkholderia-Paraburkholde, Bryobacter, Cupriavidus, Mycobacterium, and Leptospirillu) and phyla (Acidobacteria and Actinobacteria) could likely resist acid rain to some extent, with Acidobacteria, Gemmatimonadetes and Proteobacteria being well adapted to the copiotrophic environments. Results of correlational analyses between Firmicutes and soil properties (pH, TN, TK) further indicated that this phylum was also well adapted to a nutrient-deficient habitat of low pH. Finally, while Mycobacterium and Bradyrhizobium could adapt to low pH, high soil TK contents were not conducive to their enrichment. The results also showed that acid rain shifted the bacterial groups from fast-growing copiotrophic populations to slow-growing oligotrophic ones. The RDA analysis, and Pearson's rank correlation coefficients indicated that soil pH and TK were the main factors influencing bacterial richness.

Unraveling consequences of the co-exposure of polyethylene microplastics and acid rain on plant-microbe-soil system

Emerging microplastics (MPs) pollution and continuing acid rain (AR) co-exist in terrestrial ecosystems, and are considered as threats to ecosystems health. However, few data are available on MPs-AR interactions in plant-microbe-soil systems. Here, a microcosm experiment was manipulated to elucidate the co-exposure of polyethylene MPs (PE MPs; 1%, 5% and 10%) and AR (pH 4.0) on soil-lettuce system, in which the properties of soil and lettuce, and their links were explored. We found that 10% PE MPs increased soil CO₂ emission and its temperature sensitivity (Q₁₀) in combination with AR, while 1% PE MPs reduced soil CO₂ emission irrespective of AR. PE MPs addition did not influence lettuce production (total biomass) though its photosynthesis was affected. PE MPs exerted negative impact on soil water availability. PE MPs treatments increased NH₄⁺-N content of soil without AR, and dissolved organic carbon content of soil sprayed with AR. 10% PE MPs combined with AR reduced soil microbial biomass, while soil microbial community diversity was not affected by PE MPs or AR. Interestingly, 10% PE MPs addition altered soil microbial community structure, and promoted the complexity and connectivity of soil microbial networks. 5% and 10% PE MPs addition decreased soil urease activity under AR, but this was not the case without AR. These findings highlight the critical role of AR in regulating PE MPs impacts on plant-microbe-soil ecosystems, and the necessity to incorporate other environmental factors when evaluating the actual impacts or risks of MPs pollution in terrestrial ecosystems.

Recent Advances in Vehicle Exhaust Treatment with Photocatalytic Technology

Vehicle exhaust has been acknowledged as an essential factor affecting human health due to the extensive use of cars. Its main components include volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), which can cause acute irritation and chronic diseases, and significant research on the treatment of vehicle exhaust has received increasing attention in recent decades. Recently, photocatalytic technology has been considered a practical approach for eliminating vehicle emissions. This review highlights the crucial role of photocatalytic technology in eliminating vehicle emissions using semiconductor catalysts. A particular emphasis has been placed on various photocatalytic materials, such as TiO2-based materials, Bi-based materials, and Metal–Organic Frameworks (MOFs), and their recent advances in the performance of VOC and NOx photodegradation. In addition, the applications of photocatalytic technology for the elimination of vehicle exhaust are presented (including photocatalysts combined with pavement surfaces, making photocatalysts into architectural coatings and photoreactors), which will offer a promising strategy for photocatalytic technology to remove vehicle exhaust.

Chitosan-based organic/inorganic composite engineered for UV light-controlled smart pH-responsive pesticide through in situ photo-induced generation of acid

BACKGROUND

Confined by the volatile property, pesticides are overused and lost significantly during and after spraying, weakening the ecological microbalance among different species of lives. Acid-responsive pesticide is a type of smartly engineered pesticides that contribute to the improvement of utilization efficiency of pesticidal active ingredients in acid-controlled manner, whilst the implementation of acidic solutions may disturb the balance of microenvironment surrounding targeted plants or cause secondary pollution, underscoring the input of acid in a more precise strategy.

RESULTS

Chitosan was chemically modified with a photoacid generator (2-nitrobenzaldehyde) serving as a light-maneuvered acid self-supplier, based on which a smart pesticide was formulated by the integration of attapulgite and organophosphate insecticide chlorpyrifos. Under the irradiation of UV light (365 nm), the modified chitosan would undergo a photolytic reaction to generate an acid and pristine chitosan, which seized the labile protons and facilitated the release of chlorpyrifos based on its inherent pH-responsive flexibility. According to the pesticide release performance, the release rate of chlorpyrifos under UV light (27.2 mW/cm² ) reached 78%, significantly higher than those under sunlight (22%, 4.2 mW/cm² ) and in the dark (20%) within the same time, consistent with the pH reduction to 5.3 under UV light and no obvious pH change for the two other situations, exhibiting an attractive UV light-controlled, acid-propelled release behavior.

CONCLUSION

Compared to direct acid spray approach, the proposed in situ photo-induced generation of acid locally on the spots of applied pesticide circumvents the problem of acid contamination to nontargets, demonstrating higher efficiency and biocompatibility for the controlled delivery of acid-responsive pesticides and pest management. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.
