A meta-analysis of arable soil phosphorus pools response to manure application as influenced by manure types, soil properties, and climate

Pyrolytic and hydrothermal carbonization affect the transformation of phosphorus fractions in the biochar and hydrochar derived from organic materials: A meta-analysis study

Carbonized organic materials are widely used to achieve soil improvement and alleviate soil pollution. The carbonization process significantly changes the total phosphorus (P) content and the P form in the solid phase derived from organic materials, which in turn has a significant impact on the P fertilizer effect in soils. In the present study, a meta-analysis with 278 observational data was conducted to detect the impact of the carbonization process (including pyrolytic carbonization and hydrothermal carbonization) on the transformation of P fractions in biochar or hydrochar derived from different organic materials. The results showed that the carbonization process significantly increased the total P content of the solid phase by 67.9%, and that the rate of P recovery from raw materials stayed high with a mean value of 86.8%. Among them, the impact of sludge-derived char was smaller when compared to the manure-derived char and biomass-derived char. The increase of total P in the biochar (or hydrochar) produced at >500 °C (or >200 °C) was more notable than that at <500 °C (or <200 °C). Simultaneously, the carbonization process significantly decreased the proportion of available P pool in the solid phase by 51.7% on average and increased the proportion of stable P pool in the solid phase by 204%. Appropriate production temperature helps to adjust the proportion of stable P pool in the solid phase. This meta-analysis pointed out that the carbonized solid phase recovers most of the P in the feedstock and that it promotes a significant transformation of available P pool in the feedstock to stable P in the carbonized solid phase. These findings provide useful information for the rational use of carbonization technology, the development of corresponding field management strategies, and the potential value of carbonized solid phase utilization.

Fertilization and cultivation management promotes soil phosphorus availability by enhancing soil P-cycling enzymes and the phosphatase encoding genes in bulk and rhizosphere soil of a maize crop in sloping cropland

Fertilization and cultivation managements exert significant effects on crop growth and soil-associated nutrients in croplands. However, there is a lack of knowledge regarding how these practices affect soil phosphorus-cycling enzymes and functional genes involved in regulating global P-cycling, especially under intense agricultural management practices in sloping croplands. A long-term field (15-year) trial was conducted in a 15° sloping field based on five treatments: no fertilizer amendments + downslope cultivation (CK); mixed treatment of mineral fertilizer and organic manure + downslope cultivation (T1); mineral fertilizer alone + downslope cultivation (T2); 1.5-fold mineral fertilizer + downslope cultivation (T3); and mineral fertilizer + contour cultivation (T4). Bulk and rhizosphere soil samples were collected after the maize crop was harvested to determine the P fraction, P-cycling enzymes, and phosphatase-encoding genes. Results indicated that fertilization management significantly increased the inorganic (Pi) and organic soil (Po) P fractions compared to CK, except for NaOH-extractable Po in T1 and T3 in bulk and rhizosphere soils, respectively. For the cultivation treatments, the content of Pi pools in the downslope cultivation of T1 and T3 was significantly larger than that in the contour cultivation of T4 in bulk and rhizosphere soils. However, the content of NaOH-extractable Po in T1 and T3 was lower compared to T4 in bulk soil and vice versa for the NaHCO3-P and HCl-Po fractions in the rhizosphere. We also found that fertilization and cultivation managements significantly increased the activity of acid phosphatase (ACP), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), phytase, phosphodiesterases (PDE), and phoC and phoD gene abundance in bulk and rhizosphere soils, with a larger effect on the activity of ALP and the phosphatase encoding phoD gene, especially in T1 and T3 in the rhizosphere. Soil organic carbon (SOC) and microbial biomass C and P (MBC and MBP) were the main predictors for regulating P-cycling enzymes and phoC- and phoD gene abundance. A strong association of P-cycling enzymes, especially ALP and phytase, and the abundance of phoD genes with the P fraction indicated that the soil P cycle was mainly mediated by microbial-related processes. Together, our results demonstrated that an adequate amount of mineral fertilizer alone or combined with organic fertilizer plus downslope cultivation is more effective in promoting soil P availability by enhancing the activity of ALP, phytase, and phoD genes. This provides valuable information for sustaining soil microbial-regulated P management practices in similar agricultural lands worldwide.

Bioorganic fertilizers improve the adaptability and remediation efficiency of Puccinellia distans in multiple heavy metals-contaminated saline soil by regulating the soil microbial community

Soil salinization and heavy metal (HM) pollution are global environmental problems. Bioorganic fertilizers facilitate phytoremediation, but their roles and microbial mechanisms in natural HM-contaminated saline soils have not been explored. Therefore, greenhouse pot trials were conducted with three treatments: control (CK), manure bioorganic fertilizer (MOF), and lignite bioorganic fertilizer (LOF). The results showed that MOF and LOF significantly increased nutrient uptake, biomass, toxic ion accumulation in Puccinellia distans, soil available nutrients, SOC, and macroaggregates. More biomarkers were enriched in MOF and LOF. Network analysis confirmed that MOF and LOF increased the number of bacterial functional groups and fungal community stability and strengthened their positive association with plants; Bacteria have a more significant effect on phytoremediation. Most biomarkers and keystones play important roles in promoting plant growth and stress resistance in the MOF and LOF treatments. In summary, besides enrichment of soil nutrients, MOF and LOF can also improve the adaptability and phytoremediation efficiency of P. distans by regulating the soil microbial community, with LOF having a greater effect.

Soil phosphorus availability and fractionation in response to different phosphorus sources in alkaline and acid soils: a short-term incubation study

Using agricultural wastes as an alternative phosphorus (P) source has great prospects to improve soil P status. A 70-day incubation experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of superphosphate (SSP), poultry manure (PM), cattle manure (CM), maize straw (MS), and cattle bone meal (CB) with the same total P input on soil P availability and fractions in typical acidic (red soil) and alkaline (fluvo-aquic soil) soils. The results showed that in both fluvo-aquic and red soils, CM out-performed other P sources in improving soil P availability. Changes in soil Olsen-P (ΔOlsen-P) were greater in fluvo-aquic soils with SSP, PM and CM additions than in red soils. Among the different P sources used, only CM has increased the labile soil P fractions to levels similar to that with SSP. Compared with SSP, more monoester P and inositol hexakisphosphate were detected in soils amended with PM and CM. A structural equation model (SEM) analysis suggested that soil pH had a direct positive effect on the labile P fractions in the acidic red soil amended with different P sources. In summary, CM is a superior P source for increasing plant available soil P, with considerable practical implications for P recycling.

Negatively charged nano-hydroxyapatite can be used as a phosphorus fertilizer to increase the efficacy of wollastonite for soil cadmium immobilization

Improper application of phosphorus (P) fertilizer during soil cadmium (Cd) immobilization reduces the efficiency of fertilizer and Cd remediation. In this study, we synthesized three types of nano-hydroxyapatite (NHAP) with different surface charges as slow-release P fertilizers during Cd immobilization. We also evaluated the effects of wollastonite application with or without NHAP addition, in comparison with triple superphosphate (TSP) or bulk hydroxyapatite, on Cd accumulation in Amaranthus tricolor L. The results showed that adding wollastonite significantly reduced P availability (23.5%) in the soil, but it did not inhibit plant P uptake. In wollastonite-amended soil, the application of negatively/positively charged NHAP significantly increased plant biomass by 643-865% and decreased Cd uptake by 74.8-75.1% compared to the unamended soil as well as showed greater efficiency than those with TSP. This was ascribed to the increased soil pH (from 3.94 to 6.52-6.63) and increased abundance of organic acids (including citric acid, malic acid, lactic acid, and acetic acid) secreted by plants. In addition, the P-preferring bacterial class Bacteroidia was specific to soils amended with both wollastonite and NHAP-. These results suggest that NHAP- may be an appropriate P fertilizer for soil Cd immobilization using wollastonite.
