Lead removal from aqueous solutions by olive mill wastes derived biochar: Batch experiments and geochemical modelling

Magnetic nanocellulose-based adsorbent for highly selective removal of malachite green from mixed dye solution

Herein, a novel magnetic adsorbent (BC/AA/MN@Fe3O4) was successfully prepared from waste bamboo fiber tissue and montmorillonite, and subsequently applied for the highly selective removal of malachite green (MG, removal efficiency = 97.3 %) from the mixed dye solution of MG with methyl orange (MO, removal efficiency = 4.5 %). The magnetic adsorbent has a high porosity with abundant mesopores. In the single dye MG solution, the adsorbent could effectively remove MG over a wide pH range from 4 to 10, and the maximum adsorption capacity (qmax) was 2282.3 mg/g. Moreover, the magnetic adsorbent could remove MG from various solutions including mixed dye solution, high salinity solution, and real river water dye solution. The thermodynamic results proved that the adsorption process of MG was spontaneous and endothermic. The adsorption of MG was due to the comprehensive effects of electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding interactions and ions exchange, between the adsorbent and MG. Furthermore, the BC/AA/MN@Fe3O4 exhibited an excellent reusability with adsorption efficiency above 53.4 % after five consecutive cycles. Therefore, the prepared magnetic nanocellulose-based adsorbent was expected to be a promising material for highly selective adsorption and separation of MG from mixed dye solution.

Removal of Toxic Lead from Wastewater by Lupinus albus Seed Hull

In this work, we address two concerns at once: waste reduction and the development of a lead removal adsorbent. The potential of Lupinus albus seed hull (LSH) powder as an efficient, innovative, and economical adsorbent for Pb(II) absorption was examined in this study. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy investigations were used to determine the structural and morphological properties of the LSH adsorbent. The adsorption process was studied in batch mode with multiple process variables (adsorbent dosage of 4.0-20 g/L; solution pH of 1.5-5.5; contact time of 15-70 min). By fitting the equilibrium data to the Langmuir isotherm model, the maximum adsorption capacity of Pb(II) was 357.14 mg/g at optimized pH (5.5), LSH dose (0.4 g), and interaction time (60 min) with starting Pb(II) concentration of 50 mg L-1. As for the reaction kinetics, the pseudo-second-order model was shown to be a convenient match. LSH can be reused after four desorption/adsorption cycles and has a high potential for eliminating Pb(II) from wastewater.

Co-production of spirosiloxane and biochar adsorbent from wheat straw by a low-cost and environment-friendly method

To enhance the value of wheat straw derivatives, wheat straw ash (WSA) was used as a reactant for the first time to synthesize spirocyclic alkoxysilane, an important organosilicon raw material, using an energy-saving and environmentally friendly non-carbon thermal reduction method. After spirocyclic alkoxysilane extraction, the biochar in the wheat straw ash prepared an adsorbent for Cu²⁺. The maximum copper ion adsorption capacity (Q_m) of silica-depleted wheat straw ash (SDWSA) was 31.431nullmg/g, far exceeding those of WSA and similar biomass adsorbents. The effects of the pH, adsorbent dose, and contact time on the adsorption behaviour of the SDWSA for Cu²⁺ adsorption were systematically investigated. The adsorption mechanism of Cu²⁺ by the SDWSA was investigated using the Langmuir, Freundlich, pseudo-first-order kinetic, pseudo-second-order kinetic, and Weber and Morris models by combining the preliminary experimental data and characterization results. The adsorption isotherm and Langmuir equation matched perfectly. The Weber and Morris model can describe the mass-transfer mechanism of Cu²⁺ adsorption by SDWSA. Both film and intraparticle diffusion are rapid control steps. Compared to WSA, SDWSA has a larger specific surface area and a higher content of oxygen-containing functional groups. A large specific surface area provides more adsorption sites. Oxygen-containing functional groups react with Cu²⁺ through electrostatic interactions, surface complexation, and ion exchange, which are the possible adsorption mechanisms for SDWSA. These methods improve the added value of wheat straw derivatives and promote wheat straw ash recovery and centralized treatment. This makes it possible to use the thermal energy of wheat straw and facilitates the treatment of exhaust gases and carbon capture.

Effect of CeO2-Reinforcement on Pb Absorption by Coconut Coir-Derived Magnetic Biochar

Magnetic separable biochar holds great promise for the treatment of Pb²⁺-contaminated wastewater. However, the absorption effect of unmodified magnetic biochar is poor. Considering this gap in knowledge, CeO₂-doped magnetic coconut coir biochar (Ce-MCB) and magnetic coconut coir biochar (MCB) for Pb²⁺ absorption were prepared by the impregnation method, and the efficiency of Ce-MCB for Pb²⁺ absorption was evaluated in comparison with MCB. Conducting the absorption experiments, the study provided theoretical support for the exploration of the absorption mechanism. The quantitative analysis exposed that the enhanced absorption capacity of Ce-MCB was attributed to the increase in oxygen-containing functional groups and mineral precipitation. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm model showed that Ce-MCB is a suitable adsorbent for Pb²⁺. The absorption characteristics of Ce-MCB was fit well with the pseudo-second-order (PSO) and Langmuir models, which revealed that the absorption of Pb²⁺ in water was monolayer chemisorption with a maximum theoretical adsorption capacity of 140.83 mg·g^-1. The adsorption capacity of Ce-MCB for Pb(II) was sustained above 70% after four cycles. In addition, the saturation magnetization intensity of Ce-MCB was 7.15 emu·g^-1, which was sufficient to separate out from the solution. Overall, Ce-MCB has wide application prospects in terms of biomass resources recycling and environmental conservation.
