Pollutant source or sink? Adsorption and mobilization of PFOS and PFOA from sediments in a large shallow lake with extended reed belt

Is ebullition or diffusion more important as methane emission pathway in a shallow subsaline lake?

Methane (CH4) emissions via ebullition contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions from freshwater bodies. According to the literature, the ebullition pathway may even be the most important pathway in some cases, particularly in shallow lakes. Ebullition rates are not often estimated because of the high uncertainty associated with episodic releases, leading to difficulties in their determination. This study provides an estimate of such emissions in a large, shallow, subsaline lake in eastern Austria, Lake Neusiedl, and compares them to the diffusion pathway. Ebullition gas sampling was conducted every 5-10 days over a period of 107 days from late March to mid-July 2021, using ebullition traps placed in three distinct locations: Reed belt, Channel and Open water/Lake. The aim was to study the temporal and spatial heterogeneity of ebullition and its contribution to total emissions. At the same time, several water quality and other environmental parameters were measured and then tested against the CH4 ebullition rates to explore them as potential drivers for this pathway. The carbon isotope fractionation factor (αC) of the measured CH4 ebullition gas, ranging from 1.03 to 1.06, indicates a dominance of the acetoclastic methanogenesis in the sediments of Lake Neusiedl, regardless of the location. The Reed belt location showed the highest mean CH4 ebullition rate (17 ± 28 mg CH4 m-2 d-1), which is >340-fold higher than the mean of the other two locations, and demonstrated also a strong temperature dependency. In all locations at Lake Neusiedl, the median CH4 fluxes via diffusion are significantly higher than via ebullition. Our analyses do not confirm the dominance of the ebullition pathway in any of the studied locations. Whereas at the Reed belt, ebullition accounts for 48 % of the CH4 emissions, in the other two locations, is responsible only for about 1 %.

Fate of nutrients and trace contaminants in a large shallow soda lake. Spatial gradients and underlying processes from the tributary river to the reed belt

Shallow lakes provide a multitude of ecosystem functions, but they are particularly vulnerable to natural and anthropogenic disturbances. Understanding the driving factors determining the fate and spatial distribution of nutrients and pollutants in such systems is fundamental to assess the impact of ongoing or future external pressures endangering their ecological integrity. This study investigates the fate of trace contaminants transported into the large shallow Lake Neusiedl, including contaminants representative of different patterns of sources and emission pathways and of environmental behavior, namely metals, pharmaceuticals, an artificial sweetener and perfluoroalkyl substances. Further, it examines the horizontal spatial distribution of nutrients, ions and physico-chemical parameters with an unprecedented detailed focus on the internal variability within the large reed belt. As described in the past e.g. for chloride, evaporation was identified as the process leading to a substantial concentration enrichment of the industrial chemical PFOA and the sweetener acesulfame K from the tributary river into the open lake. This is particularly relevant in view of the predicted future increase of evapotranspiration due to climate change. In contrast, the observed loss of diclofenac, but also of PFOS and carbamazepine suggests that the well-mixed, humic-rich and alkaline Lake Neusiedl offers favorable conditions for the photodegradation of otherwise very persistent chemicals. Another important finding, in the context of possible modifications in lake water levels due to climate change, is the fundamental role played by the connectivity between open lake and reed belt but also by the presence and characteristics of inner water areas within the reed belt region in determining the hydrochemistry of the lake system. By revealing systematic spatial patterns and by focusing on the underlying factors and processes, the understanding offered by this study is of high value for the conservation of shallow lakes.

Visible light induced degradation of perfluorooctanoic acid using iodine deficient bismuth oxyiodide photocatalyst

A bismuth oxyiodide photocatalyst having coexistent iodine deficient phases viz. Bi₄O₅I₂ and Bi₅O₇I was prepared by using a solvothermal method followed by calcination process. This has been used for the degradation of model perfluoroalkyl acids such as perfluorooctanoic acid at low concentrations (1 ppm) under simulated solar light irradiation. 94% PFOA degradation with a rate constant of 1.7 h^-1 and 65% defluorination of PFOA have been achieved following 2 h of photocatalysis. The degradation of PFOA happened by the parallel direct redox reactions with high energy photoexcited electrons at the conduction band, electrons in iodine vacancies and superoxide radicals. The degradation intermediates were analyzed by electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry in the negative mode. The catalyst was converted to a more iodine deficient Bi₅O₇I phase during photocatalysis following creation of iodine vacancies, some of which were compensated by the fluoride ions released from degraded PFOA.
