Application of radon (222Rn) as an environmental tracer in hydrogeological and geological investigations: An overview

Radon (²²²Rn) is a colourless, odourless, inert, and radioactive noble gas (t_1/2 = 3.8 days) that emanates from rocks and soils as a result of the alpha decay of its parent, radium (²²⁶Ra) in the decay series of uranium-238, is the focus of this study. Radon is produced in the crystal lattice of the minerals and emanates out through alpha recoil. It dissolves in water, and is also found in soil and air. Its distribution in water is more pertinent for scientific investigations. It can be measured by various methods. Certain properties of radon enable it to serve as an ideal tracer, viz., short-half life, inertness, high abundance in groundwater than surface water, preferential partitioning, sensitivity to sudden changes in subsurface conditions, non-invasiveness etc. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art techniques on the measurement of dissolved radon in water and its potential applications as a tracer and precursor in several hydrogeological and geological applications like understanding the surface water - groundwater interactions, hydrograph separation of streams, estimation of Submarine Groundwater Discharge (SGD), study of hydrodynamics and water balance of lakes, earthquake predictions, locating geological structures (faults/lineaments), geochemical explorations, NAPL contamination studies etc. Among the various applications presented, radon based approach is found to be more reliable in water resources domain than seismic precursory studies. The interpretations based on radon study in the above applications will pave the way for the improved understanding of the hydrological processes, and thus, help the planners and water managers for the sustainable development and management of water resources.

Preliminary Study on the Generating Mechanism of the Atmospheric Vertical Electric Field before Earthquakes

Precursor signals for earthquakes, such as radon anomalies, thermal anomalies, and water level changes, have been studied in earthquake prediction over several centuries. The atmospheric vertical electric field anomaly has been observed in recent years as a new and valuable signal for short-term earthquake prediction. In this paper, a physical mechanism of the atmospheric vertical electric field anomaly before the earthquake was proposed, based on which the Wenchuan earthquake verified the correctness of the model. Using Monte Carlo simulations, the variation of the radon concentration with height before the earthquake was used to simulate and calculate the ionization rates of radioactive radon decay products at different heights. We derived the atmospheric vertical electric field from −593 to −285 V/m from the surface to 10 m before the earthquake by solving the system of convection-diffusion partial equations for positive and negative particles. Moreover, negative atmospheric electric field anomalies were observed in both Wenjiang and Pixian before the Wenchuan earthquake on 12 May, with peaks of −600 V/m in Pixian and −200 V/m in Wenjiang. The atmospheric electric field data obtained from the simulation were shown to be in excellent concordance with the observed data of the Wenchuan earthquake. The physical mechanism can provide theoretical support for the atmospheric electric field anomaly as an earthquake precursor.

Analysis of Radon Measurements in Relation to Daily Seismic Activity Rates in the Vrancea Region, Romania

Many previous research studies have shown how local and even regional earthquakes can significantly affect the release of radon in the soil. The aim of this work is to investigate the relationship between radon measurements and the daily seismic activity rate and develop a methodology that allows estimating the seismic activity rate using only radon measurements. To carry out this study, the earthquake catalogue of the Vrancea region (Romania) has been used to estimate the daily seismic activity rate during a given time period, in which radon measurements were also recorded, from January 2016 to September 2020. The Vrancea zone represents the most active seismic zone in Europe and is located on the eastern edge of the strongly bent Carpathian arc. In the case of the radon measurements, seasonal behaviours and linear trends due to non-seismic factors have been identified and subsequently removed. The discrete wavelet transform has been used to analyse the radon signal at two different scales: long and short periods. From the analysis carried out on a long-period scale, an approximate linear relationship has been obtained between the radon series and the daily seismic activity rate, which provides insights into the behaviour of the seismic activity in the study region with only the radon information. In addition, the study reveals certain characteristics that could be used as precursors of earthquakes at different scales: weeks in the case of the estimated daily seismic activity rate, and days in the case of the short-period signal obtained by the wavelet analysis. The results obtained for this region allow us to hope that the analysis of the radon time series can become an effective complement to the conventional seismic analysis used in operational earthquake forecasting.

Online monitoring of lead-214 (214Pb) on atmospheric aerosols by low-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry

This paper provides a new approach that simplifies the monitoring of ²¹⁴Pb activity concentration on aerosols in the atmospheric surface layer. The approach allows obtaining data on ²¹⁴Pb activity concentration with the discreteness of 2 h. The experimental setup described in the paper made it possible to achieve a minimum detectable activity level of 0.4 Bq m^-3. Using this approach, the data on the diurnal variability of ²¹⁴Pb activity concentration in the atmosphere of Sevastopol city for a period of 18 months were obtained. The ²¹⁴Pb activity concentration varied from < 0.4 (less than 1% of the data series) to 8.9 Bq m^-3, mean value 2.0 ± 1.0 Bq m^-3. The analysis of the temporal variability of ²¹⁴Pb activity concentration on different time scales (diurnal, seasonal) was carried out. Annually averaged diurnal variation curve of ²¹⁴Pb activity concentration showed a peak at 6:00 local time and a minimum at 18:00. The maximum variability in the seasonal averaged diurnal cycle of ²¹⁴Pb activity concentration is observed in summer (± 30% of the daily average value) and the minimum in winter (± 13%). The maximum seasonal average value of ²¹⁴Pb activity concentration is observed in winter (2.5 Bq m^-3) and the minimum in summer (1.4 Bq m^-3). A quantitative estimate of the annual effective dose due to exposure to outdoor radon was obtained by using ²¹⁴Pb data, and it was 0.03 mSv a^-1.

Continuous radon monitoring during seven years of volcanic unrest at Campi Flegrei caldera (Italy)

This is a seven-year study (1/7/2011-31/12/2017) of radon monitoring at two sites of Campi Flegrei caldera (Neaples, Southern Italy) that in the last 70 years experienced repeated phases of volcanic unrest. The sites are equipped with devices for radon detection, based on the spectrometry analysis of the α-particles of radon daughters. A hybrid method, as combination of three known methods, is applied for the identification of residuals (anomalies) and trends of the time series of Radon. The results are compared with the following indicators of current caldera unrest: the tremor caused by the major fumarolic vent registered by a seismic station; the cumulative of background seismicity; the maximum vertical deformation acquired by GPS networks during the current phase of uplift; the temperature-pressure of the hydrothermal system estimated based on gas geo-indicators. The comparisons show strong correlation among independent signals and suggest that the extension of the area affected by current Campi Flegrei crisis is larger than the area of seismicity and of intense hydrothermal activity from which the radon stations are 1–4 km away. These results represent an absolute novelty in the study of a such calderic area and mark a significant step forward in the use and interpretation of the radon signal.
