Transient nature of riverbank filtered drinking water supply systems - A new challenge of natural radioactivity assessment

Estimation of the annual effective dose from exposure to radon in drinking water in Croatia

Radon is known as the main source of radiation for the general public. Results of extensive measurements of radon in water samples collected from private wells, natural springs and public water supply in Croatia are presented and annual effective doses are estimated. Measurements were performed by two different methods: the emanometry method (by using the AlphaGUARD instrument with additional AquaKIT module) and/or the liquid scintillation method (by using LSC TriCarb 2900). Water samples were collected in public water supplies in urban areas as well as private wells and springs in rural areas. The obtained average radon activity concentration based on the extensive measurement of almost 1000 water samples is 4.1 ± 1.9 Bq/l, with a minimum value of 0.2 and maximum value of 36 Bq/l respectively. The wide range of measured values is a consequence of the source of the water sample (ground/natural water versus treated water) as well as the geological structures around the water source. All estimated ingestion doses due to radon assuming consumption of 2 l of water per day from the observed source were within the interval 6.3-36.8 μSv (with calculated average and standard deviation 19.3 ± 10.3 μSv) for the water consumption from private wells and natural springs and 2.4-40.0 μSv (with calculated average and standard deviation 13.0 ± 10.5 μSv) for the water consumption from the public water supplies.

Groundwater Flow System-Based Dynamic System Approach for Geofluids and Their Resources

The ‘Dynamic System Approach for Geofluids and their Resources’ was developed to harmonize research and the sustainable exploration of geofluids (e.g., groundwater, geothermal and hydrothermal fluids) and the related geo-resources (groundwater, geothermal energy and hydrothermal minerals). The conception is based on the basin-scale groundwater flow systems, which behave as a geologic agent, mobilize, transport and deposit matter and heat, whilst it can be evaluated quantitatively and in a distributed manner. Evaluation of these systems combined, for instance, with numerical, stochastic and isotope methods can jointly manage all types of geofluids, the related resources and the environmental consequences of their exploration and utilization. This paper describes the fundamental concepts of the approach and displays the proposed workflow and guidelines for practical applications such as groundwater vulnerability assessment, managed aquifer recharge, geothermal energy utilization, and the evaluation of hydrothermal mineral potential.

Assessment of Effective Dose from Radioactive Isotopes Contained in Mineral Waters Received by Patients During Hydrotherapy Treatments

Hydrotherapy is a natural treatment and health protection method. Treatments using natural mineral water are gaining popularity as an alternative to pharmacotherapy or as additional support to pharmacotherapy in many types of diseases. The aim of the study was to determine the effective dose obtained as a result of baths and inhalations using popular mineral water samples. A total of 18 commercially available water samples used in hydrotherapy were tested for their radioactive isotope content. The following isotopes were found: 40K, 208Tl, 212Bi, 212Pb, 214Bi, 214Pb, 226Ra, 228Ac, 234Th. Effective doses received by patients during inhalation and bathing using the tested mineral water samples were determined. The collected sample activity was measured using gamma spectrometry. The effective doses received by patients from a series of inhalation treatments ranged from 170.4 to 22.9 µSv. Infants receive the highest effective dose as a result of inhalation of mineral water. The doses received by patients as a result of bathing in the studied mineral water samples were in the range of from 0.04 to 1.1 µSv and were comparable with doses from ordinary baths in tap water (0.06 µSv). The determined doses are very low; thus, they are unlikely to cause noticeable biological effects.
